At the coast. Tonight, an urgent lastminute plea for 6 Million People in the evacuation zone to get out. A look at irmas path right now which has shifted west in the past few hours, forcing people who thought they might be safe to take action. Drivers scrambling to get on the freeways and evacuation shelters are filling up fast. Long lines of people waiting to get into the shelters. 150,000 homes and businesses now without power. That number is expected to increase over the next 24 hours or so. We have Live Team Coverage from the bay area to florida. Lets begin in mirromar. We are here now because we were originally in ft. Lauderdale near the water but its at that point the conditions got too unsafe for us. We decided to leave the area and were closer to the hotel. You can see that further inland the conditions are not as bad. We are still seeing the whipping winds. This is what it looked like in ft. Lauderdale. Heavy downpours, whipping winds and cars patrolling the bridges and lotiocations in the area. We decided to play it safe and be closer to the hotel in case the power goes out. We didnt want to get stranded somewhere. Coming up in ten minutes im going to show you the unexpected turn of events that had us fleeing to take shelter. Look forward to that. Heres another look at the hurricane churning toward florida. Rob mayeda has been watching this develop all day and watched the changes happening. Here here with the latest. Were just seen a change in the last two minutes, Hurricane Irma is once again a category 4 hurricane. It has been a category 3 moving away from cuba throughout the afternoon. But in the open waters between cuba and the florida keys the winds are up to 130 miles an hour. On approach to key west by 8 00 a. M. Eastern time and 5 00 a. M. Our time tomorrow. Still a category 3 hurricane there. A storm surge up to 10 to 15 feet. For the southwest facing harbors and inlets here, the counter clockwise winds could bring coastal flooding into tampa bay during the day tomorrow. Notice the wind field here. Hurricane force wind gusts extending from coast to coast. The worst damage on the west coast. But the Tropical Storm force winds throughout the day will effect the entire state of florida. You can see the enormous size of the hurricane and the eye of the hurricane. Even with the force of irma bearing down on florida, some people decided to stay home, including a former san jose couple after living in the bay area for 40 years they retired to cape coral florida near ft. Myers. It is expected to get pummelled tonight. Marianne favro talked about why they decided to stay. Jim miller told me he and his wuf ha wife have ridden out three hurricanes in the same house and they were just fine so he believes they can do it again in irma. If you have been ordered to evacuate you need to leave now. Reporter despite the warning, jim miller and his wife linda have decided to stay put in their cape coral home even with Hurricane Irma bearing down on them. When we were deciding whether we were going to leave or not, we checked the highways, the highways were jammed. No gas. We had tents. Reporter so the couple who lived in san jose for years decided to stay behind with their four cats and wait out Hurricane Irma in their house. They did their best to prepare, covering all their windows with aluminum siding. The wind is blowing fairly hard. Reporter jim stepped outside to show us what it looked like as high winds swayed palm trees in his front yard. The eye of the hurricane should come a few miles west of us. Reporter the millers still have power but are ready if it goes out. Weve got food. Weve got water. Reporter jim says during hurricane charlie they also stayed in their home. He says he and his wife and cats hunkered down in their bathtub with a bottle of wine and mattress over them. They are prepared to do the same during irma. We are just hoping and praying that everything is okay. Jim and his wife say they are expecting to get hit the hardest tomorrow. They are one of the only home owners in their neighborhood that decided to stay. We wish them the best and we will be checking up on them tomorrow and let you know how theyre doing. Thanks very much. With the millers as an exception, this has been a day of high anxiety for many people on floridas gulf coast. New evacuation orders because of irmas shift in direction leaving tens of thousands of people scrambling for a safe place to ride out the storm. Overflowing shelters are turning people away and time is running out. Where we live is not safe at all. And we got a mandatory evacuation to leave. Our fifth stop. Most of them were at capacity. Some of our neighbors started leaving with their animals just getting on the expressway and heading north. I dont want to get stuck because there is no gas. Reporter there are now 70,000 people in shelters across the state of florida. People who flew across the country to take refuge in the bay area are watching how friends and family are doing back home. Sergio quintana has that part of the story. Reporter the option to get out of the state of florida has expired. Most of the airports actually actually all the airports in southern florida and Central Florida have basically shut down their operations so they can batten down for the storm. It has been a stressful 48 hours for a lot of people trying to get out of the path of the storm. Looking. Reporter at gustavos home in oakland they are celebrating his and his wifes safe arrival. Since last night he has been watching storm coverage on tv and keeping track of friends. Im following friends who decided to stay in miami at home in the areas where the evacuation was not mandatory. They are showing videos and its a windy time there. Reporter this is video shot of the heavy rains in miami as irma approaches. My colleague talked with him last night as he was waiting for a flight in chicago. He had been trying to get out of miami since thursday. This is video he shot when passengers were asked to deplane because of delays. A lot of people sleeping the gates because they are supposed to travel in the morning. Reporter he and his wife boarded a plane friday afternoon, one of the last to leave Miami International before the airport closed. When the plane tookoff, it was overwhelming. I just start to cry as a baby when we took off. Reporter he shot this picture as the plane climbed away from miami and away from irmas path. There are about 24 flights between San FranciscoInternational Airport and florida cancelled today. Most of the airports in florida are going to be closed until at least monday. Reporting live at sfo, sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. These people are heading toward florida. A team of oakland firefighters just arrived in orlando awaiting their orders. They are one of many strike teams from the bay area sent in to assist after the hurricane blows through. More than 20 people have been killed in the caribbean. Today in cuba, many people stepped outside to see whats left. Hurricane irma was a category 5 storm when it hit cuba. You see some of the destruction there. Some places got more than a foot of rain. It has since moved north but the island is being pounded by strong winds. In the bahamas, the hurricane passed just to the south of the bahamas, avoiding a direct hit there. Thats what we did. We sent it back to the studio. This is video i posted on my social media accounts. And this is just moments after we powered down from our live shot and headed over to a parking lot at city hall to take shelter. And a gentleman let us get into his Apartment Building which was very nice of him and we were able to take shelter until the Tornado Warnings expired. Thankfully we were okay. But i would be lying if i said i didnt get nervous and wasnt scared at that moment. The winds picked up like they are right now. The miami zoo says the panic from such a move could prove deadly for some animals. Thats why they are bracing for irma, taking the time to move the animals into fortified buildings now. Years ago during hurricane andrew, the zoo was not as prepared. Some animals took shelter in bathrooms. And they are doing much better this time around. We still have fog and low clouds around belvidere but they are being expressed down towards the ground. Right now, San Francisco, 61 degrees. Highs in the 60s and 70s. Even San Francisco making a run at the low to mid80s tomorrow. Certainly a warm up to finish off the weekend. Pleasanton, 71 degrees, trivalley locations in the mid90s by 3 00 in the afternoon and approaching 100 around the east bay valleys. San jose, 70, not as much low clouds expected overnight. And high temperatures approaching the mid90s downtown. Hot temperatures despite the morning starting cool with the low 60s. Highs south of downtown could get close to 100 degrees. Trivalley up toward concord and antioch, close to 90 degrees. 89 in oakland and peninsula temperatures in the 80s and low 90s. San Francisco Sea breeze backing off for a day. Highs in the 80s for San Francisco. In the north bay, highs in the mid to upper90s. We begin to see changes. You cant see much right now in the satellite. But active weather to our south. This upper low sitting offshore is going to pull the moisture in the deserts closer to the bay area. Tomorrow morning patches of low clouds and fog. And late tomorrow close to this time, high clouds begin to pass by. Well see deeper moisture by monday and tuesday setting us up for cooling temperatures. But also look off to the east, a chance for scattered showers. As long as the low off the coast, increasing humidity and gradually cooling temperatures for the middle of the week. For San Francisco hottest day tomorrow, upper 70s and 80s. But muggy monday and tuesday. Showers move in on wednesday. Thursday is breezy. And for the valleys, hot again tomorrow. Mid90s on monday and the showers clear out. Well see a slight chance of thundershowers. Tuesday is the best bet for seeing showers. Maybe a fall preview the second half of next week.
