That does not mean this is not still a very dangerous storm. It is a monster. And in fact, the Hurricane Force winds right now from the center of this storm stretch out about 75 Miles Per Hour and then the Tropical Force Winds stretch out almost 190 miles from tip to tip. So were watching this closely. Its latest location right now as we said, a category 4 storm with 150 Miles Per Hour winds, 450 miles southeast of here. Moving west knot west at 16 Miles Per Hour. Tonight it strikes the bahamas with winds from 75 to 80 Miles Per Hour. 5 to 10 foot storm surge. Then is paces cuba and makes its way toward florida. The sometime late saturday night into sunday morning 150 to 175 Miles Per Hour winds. Storm surge 7 to 10 feet. Rainfall 8 to 16 inches. It continues up the spine of florida. Sunday evening in Central Florida still with end withes between 75 and 100 Miles Per Hour. Thats a category 2 storm with a storm surge of 35 feet and then continues on into northern florida and the southeast. The this is going to be a onetwo punch on both sides of the coast. The reason for that, the state of florida along the peninsula is about 150 miles wide. This storm, Hurricane Irma is about 650 miles wide. As it makes its way to the north, that storm surge is going to come into winds from the east and that will cause the storm surge in soet eastern florida upwards of 10 feet. Then as it pulls away to the north, the winds shift around and well see a storm surge thats pretty strong along the west and southwest coast of florida and so you can see those storm surge warnings anywhere from five to ten feet. To give you an idea of ten feet, the bottom of those windows, thats ten feet up there. So the water will come in that high, guys. All right. Thank you very much. When confronted by officers he ran into a restricted area and tried to get on to the roof. An officer shot the suspect. Passengers ordered to evacuate a termin terminal amid the chaos. Nobody got hurt aside from the perpetrator. None of the workers downstairs or any passengers. I think i described it as a knew clear hurricane because of its devastating effect on the islands on its way towards florida. The evacuation has gone very well. As of yesterday, ill see the streets of prooem h. Miami beach quiet. Empty, completely empty. Now of course were going to continue today. We need everybody whos watching or listening to know we dont want heros, we want safe residents. They should leave here if they have not left already . Miami beach is a great city. You know that. Youre also the home of a lot of Senior Citizens. Did that population pose any specific challenges in terms of getting those people to safer ground . Were very close. We know our seniors lif. Also have a Homeless Population as well as special needs. We took early steps to make sure we identified all our seniors and make sure they have the ability to evacuate the island. We have buses, we have trolleys, shelters in the mainland for them to go. The and thats gone very well so far. You must have a todo list that is pages and pages long. Setting evacuations aside because i know thats number one, what are the other concern the you have now. I think the two primary concerns number one people heed the warning and of court the potential devastating effects from the storm. The sea water, huge storm water surge big concern that we have. Imagine taking a squeegee and dragging the top layer of the ocean on shore. They can flood at high tide on a sunny day. The forecast of about five to ten feet that will inundate parts of miami and cause potentially devastating flooding. And the winds, the high rises in the miami area. So winds change speed with height. So for example 100 Miles Per Hour winds at the surface translates to 130 Miles Per Hour at the top of a highrise. The windows in these newer buildings after hurricane andrew are designed to with stand 175 Miles Per Hour winds but you have to keep the windows shut as the winds rush down the billing they create that intense vacuum effect that can suck things out. If they are not shut properly can can cause significant damage inside. Also, speaking of winds, there are more than two dozen cranes scattered around miami. The cranes counter balances can weigh up to 30,000 pounds so they did not have time to remove them before the hurricanes arrival. People that live near those cranes are being urged to evacuate because theyre ekt p etded to just spin. Theyre going to let them loose and spin in the storm. Theres no saying just how long they can spin for. Irma is different than harvey because the storm surge and winds will be a much bigger threat than the days of flooding lain h.
