describe, who is wearing perhaps a red or orange shirt and blue jeans. it's a very limited description. now, annest mated seven police officers, as well as the california highway patrol and deputies aboard a sheriff's department helicopter have been searching throughout the night for the suspect who is also described as being armed with a handgun. >> it all started around 4:00 p.m. after someone at the motel 6 called police. when officers found two men described as suspicious in the car in the parking lot, police say the two men bolted from the car on foot, one of them throwing or dropping an ammunition clip. >> a large-capacity magazine was discarded. >> an 18 year veteran fired his weapon striking one of the suspects. >> was the suspect running away from the officer? if so, how many shots were fired? >> don't know how many shots were fired. the officer -- the suspect was running away from the officer, but we don't know -- what i don't have specific details of what type of confrontation occurred. >> do you know if a confrontation did, in fact, occur? >> we do know a shooting occurred, so i would say that would be a confrontation. we just don't know what precipitated that shooting. that would be part of our investigation. >> details on the shooting chronology are not yet clear. >> did the suspected, who was killed, fire his weapon? >> we don't know that. that will be part of our investigation. >> were the officers wearing body cameras? >> no, we currently do not have body cam ras. >> the suspected died at the scene. police say they found a handgun beside his back in april, an officer shot and killed an army vet reportedly suffering from ptsd. the officer opened fire after webber reportedly refused to drop the knife and came to wards the officer. we're the news room here. shots fired near a popular berkley-area park. police refer to the area just after 6:30. they initially received several 9-1-1 calls. officers found a victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound. he was taken to the hopt to be treated. right now, police do not have a motive for that shooting. >> smoky and hot. you undoubtedly noticed the haze hanging over much of the bay area today. look at that. that gives you a great idea. in case you haven't noticed or didn't get out today, if you thought today was bad, brace yourself for even higher temperatures tomorrow. arntny? >> yeah, well, you said it. we talk about temperatures that are going to go up a couple of degrees tomorrow. the smoke and the haze o ridge nated from those fires this emping. they've been burning for weeks. we have the jerusalem fire that's just north of napa. but that one is about 25,000 acres. you take all of the fires across north earn california. each one of those is about the size of the jerusalem fire. that's what's providing all of the smoke across the bay area. the winds are moving from that direction. basically, whenever you get high pressure, because of the name, high pressure, it does exert a high amount of pressure at the surface of the earth. and that's what traps all of the pollutants at the surface. couple that with light winds. there is a spare the air alert. in fact, for tomorrow, the east bay and the south bay will receive the worst of the air quality. but, again, it's across the entire bay area. now, as we move through the next couple of day, things get hot and then they get cool and we'll have better air quality. we'll talk about that coming up. >> thanks very much. tonight, the water is not running for dozens of homes. a water main broke yesterday. for some, the water won't be running until tomorrow. tomorrow morning. nbc bay area's christy smith live. christy, a hot day. how are people teali indealing s problem? >> reporter: as best they can. about 20 blocks still impacted tonight. crews are still working on it. they say this is an 80-year-old pipe that developed a crack. the plan is a temporary fix to get the remaining customers back to what they were. >> crews worked on a temporary fix tonight after a 20 inch water main broke under railroad tracks leaving a large part of the city with little water pressure. >> back in the kitchen, i was in there a few minutes ago, and it still seem today be fluk chew waiting a little bit. but it's better than it was this morning. >> james perry is finally able to run his sprinkler. he lives near the break. >> it's approximately 20 blocks and we're still impacted. likely, those residents have water. it will just be at a lower pressure. >> reporter: a small group may have none. at this home earlier today, the faucet, the hose, are dry. >> it's hot. it's hot. and it's weird. because you know, you go in there you get ready to cook and you get the water and it don't go on. >> tonight, the emergency operation center is deact vated after fire fighters arrived with water tenures in case of fire. the city has offered water at two fire stations. >> with water flowing again, the city says water in the pipes is safe to drink. it may look a little different as the flow increased again. and it's being tested regularly. >> the water is coming back positive for chlorination, which means it's okay to drink. and this period of time, if you find the sediment coming through your faucets, go outside, flush the water for five to ten minutes. >> now, they say it can take up to 48 hours to entirely flush your system. the plan is to put a permanent fix in place sometime next week and, again, have everyone else who still has limited service back up by 4:00 a.m. reporting live, christy smith, nbc bay asian family. this happened around 3:30 in the porning. the victims say they were confused and surprised by the graffiti. and they think they must have been targeted for some reason. >> it's not random, i guess, because my brothers and i and my fiance live together here. and we're the only asians on the block, as far as i know. but it's a pretty nice neighborhood. you know, i guess we must have -- like, they must have identified those houses where we were living. >> now, the family has painted over the graffiti. police are now asking for the public's health in identifying this suspect. >> a computer glitch made for a nightmare travel day at airports across the country. the faa says the problem was in a control tower tracking system based in leesburg virginia. that's how they route high at tud near the nation's capitol for hours. planes were barred. more than 2,000 flights delayed. hundreds were cancelled. passengers were feeling a lot of frustration. >> not a good day to fly. explosions at a port city just south of beijing on wednesday. today, some good news. three days after the initial explosio explosions, rescuers found a survivor who was pulled from inside a charred shipping container. just 160 feet from the blast epicenter. the blast may have been triggered when fire fighters used water on volatile chemicals. hundreds are injured and an unknown number are still missing. >> back here at home, officials in yosemite national park have opened a campground where two teenage boys were killed in a freak accident. the victims died when the tree limb fell on their tent. this is near half dome. rangers are trying to determine what caused the accident. they say that a forester inspects trees in the park. but they're not saying when the trees in this area were last inspected. continuing our coverage of the wild fires burning in northern california. tonight, all people living north of santa rosa are back home. firefighters released new nfgts. the fire right now, 80% contained. it has burned more than 25,000 acres. >> family, friends and fellow firefighters gathered today to remember firefighter michael hallenbeck. the 21-year-old was killed two weeks ago near lake taho. he died after a tree fell on him. his death weighed heavily on those who knew him and all of those who shared his profession. >> it's tough for all of us. this is the second in about a month. and, within a month and it's been -- it's going to be a tough, long season. >> this was hallenbeck's first season on the fire line. >> graduation limbo for more than a hundred high school seniors in san francisco. it is now over tonight. the city's unified school district board voted to award diplomas to students unable to graduate because of a bureaucratic stumbling block. 10 e7 local students needed to pass the state exit exam in july in order to earn that diploma. but the state's superintendent cancelled that test. well, the problem is resolved for san francisco students. thou just awesome. >> organizers say only about 20% of people looking for a pet go to an animal shelter. today, most participating shelters waved adoption fees and even some spaying and neutering fees. it's not too late to take advantage of that. several shelters are expanding clear the shelters into tomorrow. >> that is amazing that only 20% of people look at shelters. they have everything. it runs the gamut. that's really where you should start. there is still time to give a pet a new home. local animal shelters are offering no or discounted adoption fees tomorrow. >> let me say it again. you and for the most part, it is hazy out there. temperatures are mild. still 81 degrees in the trivalley. 73 in the peninsula. as we move through the day tomorrow, we're going to start with clear skies. it is going to be another hazy start. that's through tomorrow. we'll see another hazy day. temperatures even hotter at some places. temperatures ranging anywhere from 85 degrees to 105 for inland valley. and then tomorrow night, the fog rolls back in, leaving for a cooler day on monday. but, by cooler, i just mean about 5-10 degrees which will put us mostly into the 80s and t e 90s. it's close to 100 degrees in the south bay. the peninsula will see after low 90s today. most of the east bay was really hanging out in the low 90s today. is 104, san francisco, 85 for the north bay. 88 degrees. click out -- 99 for san jose. 101 for saratoga. pacifica at 86. the marina district at 75. 84 degrees there at san francisco. up in the north bay, temperatures near 100 degrees for napa. 101 for walnut creek and a series of triple digits for livermore. tomorrow will be peak of the heat. that's going to leave us baking for tomorrow. not a whole lot happening in the future cast. but you will notice that fog starts to roll back in on monday morning. so keep in mind, those mort nory commuters. that's why we have the smoke that's moving in for trinity county. all of those fires bringing that smoke right over the bay area. but, tomorrow evening, those winds will shift and we'll see an on-shore wind return. that's going to lead for clearer and better air quality for monday. the trend remains hot tomorrow. monday, a little bit of cooling. by wednesday, you'll really notice the cooling. most cooling will happen at the coastline tomorrow. 69 by thursday. so relief is on the way. >> it is going to be another hazy start. that's through tomorrow. we'll see another hazy day. temperatures even hotter at some places. temperatures ranging anywhere from 85 degrees to 105 for inland valley. and then tomorrow night, the fog rolls back in, leaving for a cooler day on monday. but, by cooler, i just mean about 5-10 degrees which will put us mostly into the 80s and t e 90s. it's close to 100 degrees in the south bay. the peninsula will see after low 90s today. most of the east bay was really hanging out in the low 90s today. is 104, san francisco, 85 for the north bay. 88 degrees. click out -- 99 for san jose. 101 for saratoga. pacifica at 86. the marina district at 75. 84 degrees there at san francisco. up in the north bay, temperatures near 100 degrees for napa. 101 for walnut creek and a series of triple digits for livermore. tomorrow will be peak of the heat. that's going to leave us baking for tomorrow. not a whole lot happening in the future cast. but you will notice that fog starts to roll back in on monday morning. so keep in mind, those mort nory commuters. that's why we have the smoke that's moving in for trinity county. all of those fires bringing that smoke right over the bay area. but, tomorrow evening, those winds will shift and we'll see an on-shore wind return. that's going to lead for clearer and better air quality for monday. the trend remains hot tomorrow. monday, a little bit of cooling. by wednesday, you'll really notice the cooling. most cooling will happen at the coastline tomorrow. 69 by thursday. so relief is on the way. >>
