I dont want to give it away too quickly here. Supporters of drones at the top of the list, police are very much anticipating a yes vote, its the third item on the councils agenda, which means it could come up quickly for a vote if approved, it could allow police to fly a single drone for a oneyear pilot program. I apolice eye in the sky. A drone with cameras and the ability to hover over a suspect who may be firing at officers or placed a bomb to go off. Thats what the city council will consider this afternoon. The vote comes after months of public debate. Police should be able to use it as a tool in case theyre chasing someone. Its a lot safer than falling at a high speed. We dont know what theyre going to see. Suspension began when police used part of a Homeland Security grant for a 7,000 purchase of a drone without any public input beforehand. The public demanded meetings and got them. According to san jose mayor, police will use the drone sparingly. The chiefs agreed, were using the drones to a very specific circumstance, where you have an explosive device. In those two very limited circumstances, well be able to use these devices to protect the public and the lives of the officers. The drone will not be used for surveillance, fly at night nor carry weapons. In order to use the twofoot wide drone police will have to document who deployed it, where and why. And make that Information Available for public audit. If the drone is rejected, a spokesman for the mayor says the drones uses would likely be revised and the matter would come up for vote again. It would not be killed outright. If approved, the city would have to get the approval from from the faa, which could take until the end of the year. Live in san jose nbc bay area news.
