a rifle that one officer was shot. there was a shootout, was shot possibly in the thigh. that officer is in stable condition at the hospital and is expected to be okay. they return fire and shot and killed that suspect. we got officer watson here with the oakland police department who is about to give us an update. can you tell us the latest? >> i can. are you live right now? i was going to wait for everybody else to set up, but. i'll share with you. my apologies, i understand you're live. what we can share with you this morning, the oakland police department did have an officer-involved shooting. this occurred just after 1:30 this morning. this is still very new, very fresh and an active investigation. what we can share with you at this time is that officers respond responded to the 3800 block of martin luther king. they were conducting a follow up investigation that was associated to a sexual assault that occurred on the officer. they were still continuing an investigation when their investigation led them to o the 3800 block of martin luther king. what officers arrived what we know at this time is the suspect presented himself with a rifle shot at the officers. one of the officers was struck by gunfire. both officers returned fire with multiple officers at the scene, but both officers returned fire. . the officer and suspect were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. the suspect is deceased. the officer is undergoing surgery this morning and listed in stable condition. i know that there are many questions that not only the media has but our community has as well. i can share with you that we have our homicide investigation here. we have our internal affairs division and the district attorney's office. so we have three levels of investigation. we certainly want to share with you as many details as we can as the investigation continues, but we don't want to compromise the case at the same time. i will share with you that the chief will be holding a press conference later this morning. we will provide you with that time. that will be back down at our main station. so later this morning, we will have a press conference and provide you with additional information. >> is your officer going to be okay? >> our officer is listed in stable condition. again, the officer will be undergoing surgery so we will certainly keep you updated as we receive information as well. >> this is so very new and active. it's going to be difficult to share with you what exactly transpired right up to the point where gunfire took place. we can share there was gunfire. there was exchange between the suspect and the officers. and as this investigation continues, we may have more information later for you this morning. what we know is the suspect was armed with the rifle, shot one of the officers. two officers returned fire. the suspect was struck, transported to a local hospital where the suspect was pronounced deceased. >> just to wrap up, this was a sexual assault suspect that the officers were aware of. they were making contact with him. a couple blocks behind officer watson. when they approached this man, this man had a rifle, shot one of the officers, that officer was shot and his partner returned fire and the officer is in the hospital in stable condition. officer watson saying that later this morning the police chief will be holding a news conference to give us more details. reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you, we have seen police officers risking and sacrifice i sacrificing their lives. on that note, u.s. honor flag is in the bay area as part of a national tribute. that flag will fly for 15 hours today outside headquarters. that's one hour for each hour of his service. he was shot and killed last month during a traffic stop. the honor flag that is traveled to thousands of events and services across the country. it was flown at ground zero after 9/11 and on the space shuttle atlantis. california on fire, right now there are more than a dozen fires burning, a majority in northern california. >> the biggest one is the rocky fire. despite the efforts of thousands of firefighters, that fire is growing this morning still. chris sanchez joins us with more on a developing story. >> morning good morning, more than 12,000 people were ordered from their homes this weekend and some will have nothing to return to. 26 homes are destroyed with about as many other structures near the homes. the fire exploded in size overnight. you can see from the flames, there's plenty of fuel from fire. cal fire says all the vegetation is not just dry, it's dry to the core creating fire conditions that are very dangerous and very extreme. it is only about 5% contained at this point and growing. it's a fire that started just wednesday. by friday it was 15,000 acres and doubled in size every day since. at last check, it was 54,000 acres, the equivalent of 84 square miles. people were forced from campgrounds there, but so were the residents. this woman is one of 12,000 people who were ordered to get out when the winds shifted. >> finally smoking us out and we got to get out of here. >> that firefighter right there with that blast just set a controlled burn, one of the ways they are trying to create a fire break burning the fuel before fire can get to it and thereby contain the fire. but the success of both the fire fight on the front lines and the buffer zones is dependent on the winds. meteorologist kari hall is here with the weather. >> we have had some light winds this morning. the humidity is higher. that may work in the favor of crews trying to get president wildfire under control. the highest winds will be at 20 miles per hour. look at the humidity this morning at 98% now that the cloeds have moved back in. it drops to 29% and temperatures are in the 60s and will rise to the 80s. we can see the clouds and the smoke coming from both of those wildfires on the satellite. it's a a lot of smoke rolling through the air, but once again, the low clouds moving in make conditions more favorable to try to get a handle on some of the wildfires burning, especially farther to our north. i'll talk more about that coming up in a a few minutes. >> such a difficult fire season, thank you. we continue our wildfire coverage on our app as well. there we will continue to update information about e evacuations and whatnot. we know a lot of us have family up and down the state. we'll update you on twitter and facebook as well. >> thank you, kris. something else is drawing people's attention these days, a a dead whale. it's the third in just a matter of months. >> it continues to baffle everyone, including scientists. stephanie chuang, what can you tell us? forecast. with a fire that big. it creates its own weather system. >> it does and then we feel the winds picking up in those areas and it becomes more breezy. one thing that's working in their favor is not that windy. we have a westerly wind at 10 to 15 miles per hour. the gusts this afternoon could kick up to 20 miles per hour. the humidity is high this morning at 98% daytime humidity drops to 29% as z temperatures are in the 60s. it will be in the 80s later on today. we can see these fires and smoke on the satellite imagery. you can tell here that there are some shades of grey there coming from the smoke from the wildfires. we have the clouds over the sierra. but this dangerous situation there farther to the north of the viewing area and we'll continue to keep you up to date on that. >> help catching the gunman in a shooting. it happened on the western e edition neighborhood. one of the victims has died. two others survived. police have yet to e e release a motive for the shootings or a suspect description. it's 5:34, police are crediting social media with them tracking down a wanted parolee. he was wanted for an incident on friday in concorde. he's accused of cutting off a lock of a woman's hair, sniffing it and running away. he was wearing an ankle monitor when he got it off, but. he cut the ankle monitor off as well. we put out a call on social media and someone reported seeing him. he was trying to take a photo of a woman. a former south bay elementary schoolteacher is expected to plead guilty to molesting four students. police arrested james lloyd on charges of molesting one child. three more victims have come forward and there's likely more. one was a teacher in morgan hill where he also worked in. the school district and as a youth leader in the south bay. lloyd is facing 40 years behind bars. from a car wash to a crash, the chp is trying to figure out how a car in neutral rolled across 11 lanes of traffic. this is the jeep's starting point. chp officers say a worker at the lucky car wash told him he had the car in neutral. but when he got it to move forward that car leapt into drive. he hit the brakes, but the car sped out of the car wash over the sidewalk and across redwood highway. the car then cross ed northboun 101, jumped the median and stopped in the middle of lanes. the worker wasn't hurt but the car has some minor damage. in the midst of the historic drought a golf course figured out a first of its kind to keep its greens from turning brown. operators at the country club plan on spending up to $10 million to build their own sewage plant. significantly more than the course needs to stay green. many other courses use recycled water but most of them get the water delivered in public pipes. milder temperatures this week at 13 miles per hour across most of the bay. it continues to go up o to 15 to 20 miles an hour today and the breezy winds for the north bay we could have those sustained winds at 23 and then kicking up a little higher as we go into the evening. highs today reaching 76 degrees in san jose. 77 in santa rosa. walnut creek, 81. not bad, our temperatures fairly comfortable for the first part of august. we normally see temperatures warmer than this. we'll start a warming trend through the week. i'll a talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. >> it looks like a bridge over the bay a few low clouds. it's typical of this time of year. also coastal fog. in the north bay it's 59 degrees. and here's where we're headed this afternoon. san francisco, a mixture of sun and clouds. 68 degrees in the north bay. 83 degrees in the south bay. so we do start out this morning with the clouds and darker shades of gray show where e visibility will be. clouds on the western side of the city. and also for the north bay. as e we head into the afternoon, we'll start to e see the clouds rolling back in covering most of the bay. but this is what's also helping to moderate temperatures along with a westerly breeze that stayed us with for the next couple days transporting the cool ocean air and into the next couple days, we'll have the morning clouds, afternoon sunshine and even the valleys are feeling the effects of this. it will be cooler than average. so as you head out for the a's game, it will be 68 degrees, a m mixture of sun and clouds. more clouds by the end of the game we'll be at 65 degrees. in the try valley, cooler today, much cooler than average, which is 88 degrees. we don't get there until thursday. but it may be trending back downward in time for friday before it goes up this weekend. here's a look at the weekend forecast. you can start making plans. 88 degrees on sunday in the south bay. it will be a touch warmer across the bay on sunday. it looks slowing. a little debris, but everything pushing out of lanes. the toll plaza metering lights are on 37. 5:48, new this morning the search is on for a renter who burglarized a san francisco house she was staying in. all of it was caught on surveillance camera. you see her looking around. this woman stole more than $35,000 worth of merchandise from from house on 27th avenue. anyone with information is asked to call police. it's 5:48, a manhunt is underway for the gunman who murdered a police officer in memphis, tennessee. the 29-year-old shot the officer multiple times during a traffic stop. a neighbor then used the radio to call for help, but it was too late. . he died at the hospital. 33-year-old bolton served in iraq. the community is trying to make sense of it all. >> there's a pain police say he's both armed and dangerous. cecil the lion may be the most famous to die, but authorities say he's not the first. they accuse a pennsylvania doctor of killing another african lion in april. the doctor is accused of shooting the lion with a bow and arrow without quota or permit. zimbabwe is denying rumors that a companion of cecil is dead. now to a history on a bay area beach. a who went down there with flashlights and said the smell is very bad. the concern is that the wind picks up and the smell is everywhere. there's also concern that ñiñi pacifi. calls started at 6:30 yesterday morning people spotting the humpback whale. scientists performed an autopsy. neighbors are worried because two other whales washed up here in recent months. experts say it has big numbers of oakland involves plig and a man armed with a rifle. . this happening near the bart station. an officer and gunman were both hit and the suspect has died. bob redell joins us live from the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, sam. this happened around 1:30 this morning. as you can see, the scene is about a block or two fl where we're standing. you're looking down martin luther king boulevard here. the officers were trying to make contact with a suspect in a sexual assault. this was a sexual assault that took place earlier in the evening as they made contact the suspect opened the door and had a a rifle shooting one of the officers possibly in the thigh. the officer was shot along with his partner, returned fire shooting and killing that suspect. the suspect and the officer both taken to the hospital. the suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital while the taficer in the past hour was
