arrested. the search of the missing 8-year-old girl in santa cruz. >> good evening, everyone. >> if you are just now joining us we've been on early because of giants baseball here on nbc bay area. what's happening? santa cruz? a grizzly di cover ri a body found in the dumpster. a 15-year-old boy who lives in the same apartment complex was arrested late tonight. this dumpster's located inside an enclosed area in the complex. at this hour that teenager is questioned in connection with maddie's death who was seen 4:00 p.m. yesterday riding her white scooter outside the complex. nbc area is in santa cruz, and chuck, this is gut wrenching for the family. >> reporter: not just for the family, but many in the community who felt a community to the little girl who everyone searched for for more than 24 hours. volunteers from santa cruz neighborhoods joined police and fbi agents as they scoured the neighborhood searching for 8-year-old madison middleton last seen riding her new scooter here in santa cruz. it's a combination studio loft arrangement here in santa cruz, but hopes ended suddenly when the biggest break in the case came this evening. >> stay back. >> reporter: shortly before 8:00 p.m., the police swiftly moved into arrest a 15 -year-old male. we have blurred his picture because of his age. at the arrest of the teen's mother became hysterical. >> this evening, at approximately 7:55 p.m., and this extraordinary heart breaking news i'm about to give to you, our detectives discovered the body of a young female inside of a dumpster at the complex located behind me. >> reporter: the arrest happened at the art center where 8-year-old madison middleton was missing sunday afternoon, and then police confirmed the worst. >> known him for a long time. a nice kid. you know, just very well spoken for his age, just seemingly a nice guy, so very unfortunate circumstances to say the least. >> reporter: that fellow there speaking of the -- was a neighbor of the person arrested. the 15-year-old. the 15-year-old is being held arrested on suspicion of homicide. police say it is possible but doubtful that there will be more arrests. reporting live in santa cruz people to access the train tracks after a devastating string of teen suicides. nbc bay area is live in palo alto with more on the plan they are hopeful makes a difference jean? >> reporter: medical experts say there are suicide hot spots here in palo alto on the spring tracks. in a community meeting tonight, city leaders say cal train and palo alto are teaming up to make it harder to get to the tracks explaining why they are investing $500,000 to replace four miles of fencing on the east side of the train tracks, a new 9.5 foot fence makes it harder to cross the tracks, and heat sensors, alerting officials when someone is on the track giving responders time to spot a train or get someone out of harm's way. supporters of the plan say anything that makes it harder for a teen to carry out the plan is worth an investment. >> kids who always fall through the cracks so i want to address the fact that like saving one life is actually saving potentially hundreds of lives, and at least hundreds of people from suffering further. >> reporter: some people at tonight's meeting thought the money would be better spent on mental health treatment because you can't fence off the entire track system. crews will replace the fence in august. a free 60-day pilot with the camera is expected to begin next month. now issue once the fence on the east side of the tracks is replaced caltranss and happened earlier this evening near city hall. police pulled over someone for a possible drug bust. that person had a dog who charged at the officers. they shot the dog in the ear but the dog did tahoe. tonight, the fire is 20% contained, and downgraded from about 4,000 acres to 1700 acres. yesterday, four firefighter wrs rushed, though, to the hospital with burns. one of them still being treat. this fire's burning west of alta in placer and nevada counties and 200 structures are threatened. a man convicted of murdering a police officer, and the same jury is supposed to decide whether that man, henry albert smith, jr. should be sentenced to death for the crime, but this morning, two joourors reminded the jung judge they are leaving town one on vacation the other moving out of the state. the court seat the alternate jurors so they will have to declare a mistrial unless they change their plans, meaning impamming a brand new jury starting the penalty phase over again. most legal experts say that's unheard of and could be grounds for appeal. a slow road to recovery several survivors of last month's balcony collapse. four of the seven survivors of the collapse have now been moved to a special unit at the santa clara medical valley center working with doctors and specialists at the brain injury and spinal coward center. in a statement today, the survivors' families specialized search dogs joined the effort. he works at downtown continuation high teaching of all things wilderness skills. friends and family, though are concern because he is diabetic and at this point, he did not have medication with him. $100,000 is the reward for finding two florida teenagers missing off the atlantic coast. the coast guard is stepping up the search for the 14-year-old boys being gay bringing on a movement for change. change happened. not everyone is happy about it. the policy to ban gay leaders was lifted today. many people have been pushing for change for a while. in 2013, a national petition drive helped convince the boy scouts of america to lift the ban on gay youths, and now that gay leaders are accepted one assistant scout master working for change is thrilled. >> i know a lot of people who haven't wanted to be with boy scouts because of this policy. >> reporter: the change allowing openly gay adult leaders into the scouting fold angered the mormon church. they released this statement saying that the admission of openly gay leaders is inconsistent with the doctrines of the church and what have traditionally been the values of the boy scouts of america. reporting live, nbc bay area news. new at 11:00 tonight, oil giant chevron is cutting 500 jobs in the headquarters part of a global effort to slash costs by a million dollars and cutting jobs from the houston office. the layoffs have started and expected to be finished by november. a fight to save local trees is online and getting out of state attention. members in the oakland hills gathered to protest the planned cutting of thousands of nonnative trees like eucalyptus trees taking the fight online now. about 53,000 people have signed the petition demanding that oakland abandon the plan to chop down the trees. the vast majority of people who signed are from out of state. the city says thinning the trees reduces fire danger, and residents say killing healthy trees increases across the valley. tomorrow morning, a chance of seeing a little patchy fog on the coast, but mostly sunny skies in the afternoon, and temperatures set to climb very quickly in the day tomorrow. so low 60s for most. a chance of some patchy low clouds in san francisco. not going to see as much as we've seen over the last couple mornings. you see the temperatures here by noon tomorrow. pretty close to today's high temperatures already 85 by noon tomorrow in san jose, mid to upper 70s san francisco to oakland, 90s in napa by lunchtime tomorrow. highs tomorrow low to mid 90s in downtown san jose, downtown, temperatures in the upper 90s, 9 90 in redwood city, and san francisco, ocean beach likely in the 70s. over to the downtown area you'll see temperatures climbing into the low 80s. north bay seeing numbers in the mid to upper 90s, and hottest spots in the bay area tomorrow concord, walnut creek, out to antioch and trivalley, temperatures running to 100 degrees, or slight above it. tuesday, wednesday the hottest days of the week in the south bay and peninsula. numbers slightly warmer wednesday. hot inland thursday but we begin to see the cooling as the clouds spill in for friday. look at the trivalley here still, a chance of seeing temperatures at 100 degrees into thursday, and relief comes on friday, but it's a mixed bag. we'll get more clouds and going to see more humidity as the pattern begins to give some ground. we'll see moisture coming away from arizona spilling into california and the latest projection of the computer models brings measurable rainfall on the central coast into southern california but as you're about to see for the bay area and time frame for this is friday into saturday maybe around the hill top south of san jose and the diablo range. good bet of seeing showers though, towards the sierras. temperatures are cooler friday. should continue through the weekend, but the humidity is likely going to be up. temperatures in the 80s with
