Matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And good morning. Welcome to today on friday morning. 7 00 on the west coast. We hate to say it but another week, another tragic shooting in louisiana. Were getting more information as we speak. Authorities have just released this new information about the gunman. His name, john houser, a 59yearold from alabama. Authorities describing him as kind of a drifter. We know that disguises including wigs and glasses were found in the search of his hotel room. Were going to get more on that in a live interview with Louisiana State police in just a moment. But lets start on this friday morning with nbcs john yang. John, what can you tell us . Matt, right now investigators are processing this crime scene. They say the theater is littered with personal belongings, shoes, purses, keys, cell phones, things people dropped and ran whether the shooting started. Were learning more about the shooter, more about the victim, and more about the life saving heroism. Reporter this Morning Police are investigating why a lone shooter opened fire thursday night in a Movie Theater in lafayette, louisiana, killing two people, injuring nine others before turning the gun and killing himself. Police identifying the gunman as 59yearold John Russell Houser, describing him as a drifter who opened fire with a. 40 caliber handgun, about 20 minutes into the 7 00 p. M. Show of trainwreck at the Grand Theater auto miles southwest of baton rouge. The gunmans original plan was to leave the theater alive. His car was parked at the exit. He as he was leaving in the crowd trying to mingle, he saw the law enforcement, local police officers, went back inside. Thats when he shot and killed himself. Reporter about 100 people were inside the theater. The victims ages range from the teens to late 60s. Witnesses describe the moment the gunfire erupted. It wasnt long into the movie and all of a sudden we heard a gunshot. A lot of people thought it was part of the movie at first like because there was a little pause between the first and the second one. But as soon as the second one happened, then we knew it was panic, everybody was just climbing over seats. Reporter police dont know housers motive but believe he was acting alone, locating housers car, they called in the bomb squad after suspicious items were seen inside. They also found wigs, glasses, and disguises in his local hotel room. This is such a senseless tragic act. Why would you come here and do Something Like this . Reporter Police Released the names of the two dead victims, 21yearold macy broe and 33yearold Gillian Johnson who died at the hospital. Family members confirming to nbc news two teachers, alice mart enand jenna meneaux were being treated at the hospital. Bobby jindal praised the actions of martin and meaux, shielding one another from the gunfire and then pulling the fire alarm. Amy schumer, the star of trainwreck responded tweeting my heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in louisiana. Of the nine wounded, two have been treated and leased. The other seven remain hospitalized. One of them in Critical Condition. Matt . John yang in lafayette this morning. Thank you so much. Lets turn to colonel michael edmonton with the Louisiana State police. Colonel edmonton, good morning to you, sir. Good morning. Glad to be here. I know your investigation is still in the early hours. But what have you been able to find out about this gunman and his possible motive . Well, thats the Million Dollar question right now. I mean youre in a Beautiful Community right near lafayette near the university, a neighborhood and a small theater right here. What brought him here . Why was he in a motel 8 not far from herehe . Paid cash there. He got money if his mom. Supposedly heading back to florida goat his lifeet his life in order. No rhyme or reason. Wigs and glasses in the hotel room. We need to piece that together. As we speak, behind me forensic scientists are in the building looking at the whole location as far as the where he shot himself and the scene where he shot the two young ladies. So were going to try to piece that together and put some type of motive to say why was he herehe . Was trying to leave the theater. He went back in and shot himself. His car was not far from him, keys on top of the tire. Certainly he had plans of making a clean get away. And also a motive. He had to plan this out. He had to buy a ticket. He sat in the theater. He was in there. He had been to local stores in the lafayette area. We have receipts. Well follow up on that and pull as much camera footage and try to get information from him. We talked to his familiarly. We talked to friends. Weve been to the location in phoenix city, alabama. We just have to sit down now and pull it together. How did he buy the gun . The gun box is in the hotel room. It is sitting there. So all that information, those parts of the puzzle weve got to put together and try to provide some motive. We owe a closure to the family. I think thats whats important here. Its a huge task before you as we describe it. You mention that your investigators have spoken to the family of the gunman. Did they provide any insight into his mental state, what might have been going on in his life . He was estranged from him. Very little communication. He contacted his mom and said he needed money badly. So she sent him some money. Trying to help him get on with his life. He was a grown man. An older man. Certainly should have had his capabilities around him to make decisions. So we need to put that together. But again, nothings come out. So we asked the public not only here in lafayette but around louisiana and certainly in lafayette. Anybody that came in contact with him, call us, give us the information so we can try to put another piece of this puzzle together and try to indicate why he came in here and why did he pick this location and walk in there and shoot two beautiful young ladies . Lets put in perspective. You know, they had a vision. They had a future. They had a name. It wasnt to die in this theater right here. So why did this happen . Thats what we have to try to put together. Impossible to understand. You have a lot of work before you. I appreciate your time all the more. Louisiana state Police Colonel michael edmonton. Thank you, sir. Thank you. A little earlier we talked to two people who were inside that Movie Theater complex at the time of the shooting. Jaylef franel and kiefer sanders. I asked them to zib what they heard and saw. I was sitting towards the middle of the theater. I didnt hear any gun shots. But right when the movie began that we were watching, the alarm system went off and pa announcer came over saying to evacuate to the nearest exit immediately. Jaylen, when you evacuated, did you find yourself in that shared hallway where the people were screaming out of the theater where the shooting actually occurred . They actually told us to evacuate the nearest exit. The nearest exit led us outside. Did you see people coming out of theeter . Yes, sir. And jaylen, did you hear any shots . Yes, sir. I did hear shots. How long did they last . It was about i heard three pops and then following those three pops about 10, 15 seconds later, thats when like he said, the sirens went off and then the pa system said everyone to evacuate the building. Its been reported that the shooter tried to leave the theater with the wave of people who were fleeing from him then sought police in the hallway and went back inside. Thats when he took his own life. Did you hear that extra, that final gunshot . Possibly. While we were outside the building, thats when i was closer to the building and i did hear a bunch of gun shots. Any of those gun shots could have been him taking his life. This tragically is not the first time Something Like this happened. We think back to 2012 and that Movie Theater shooting out in aurora, colorado. Was Something Like this ever in the back of your mind going to a Movie Theater . The fear of some kind of an event like this . No, sir, not at all. I normally dont go to the movies very often. I havent gone in a while. It was one of the last things i expected. But i was with my brother and a friend. Whenever the pa alarm went off, that is the first thing i said. It was just a feeling. I felt like there was a shooting or something. We had to exit immediately. Jaylen, what about you . Had anything ever like this crossed your mind going into a crowded room, a building or Movie Theater . Not at all. Ive never experienced anything like this before. So that was the last thing i thought was to happen when my friends text me and said lets go to the movies. Were you able to see any of the people who were brought out, the injured . We know three people are dead including the shooter. Were you able to see any of the others who were wounded in this . I didnt see any brought out from the theater except for one. When we evacuated the theater, there was a young female or middle aged female lying down. She was shot in her leg. There was blood. And she was on the curb. When they asked her what happened, she said that she was shot inside the theater. And some guys had picked her up and brought her outside and put her on the curb. Were happy you two are all right. Jaylen and kiefer, thank you very much for talking this morning. We appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. That was from earlier. Last thing anybody would expect. Night at the movies. Were going to hear a lot more from louisiana, victims, gunman and the investigation all morning long. Another breaking story overnight. The Justice Department considering a request to open a criminal ghoor how government information was hand ld all related to Hillary Clintons use of that private email account while she was serving as secretary of state. Nbc White House Correspondent Kristen Welker has the latest on that. Good morning. Matt, good morning. The Justice Department confirms this morning it has received a referral to open a criminal investigation into whether government nfc was mishandled in connection with the personal email account that clinton used when she was secretary of state. Now the news was first reported by the New York Times late last night. The Justice Department has not decided whether its going to pursue the investigation. The inquiry was sparked by two inspectors general who had concerns that clintons email account contained hundreds of potentially classified emails. The former secretary of state has said that there were no classified emails on the private server. The New York Times revised the lead late last night and initially suggested that clinton was the subject of the probe but later softened the language to suggest others, not clinton herself, were being investigated. Her Campaign Said this morning contrary to the initial times story which has been significantly revised, she followed appropriate practices in dealing with classified materials. As has been reported on multiple occasions, any release emails deem classified by the administration have been done so after the fact and not at the time they were transmitted. Now Clintons Campaign has been dog bid her use of a private email account during her time as secretary. She turned over 55,000 pages of emails to the state department and the department is now reviewing and releasing in batches. Matt, back to you. All right. Kristen, thank you very much. Meanwhile, current secretary of state john kerry found himself on capitol hill on thursday. Fiercely defending that landmark agreement to limit Irans Nuclear program. While hes calling it a good deal for the world, some lawmakers are not so sure. I believe youve been policed. Youve been bamboozled and the American People are going to pay for that. It isnt a better deal, some sort of unicorn arrangement involving irans complete capitulation. That is a fantasy. Plain and simple. Secretary kerry joined us exclusively in studio 1a earlier this morning. I put that same question to him. Was he policed . There is a lot of politics going on, matt. The more people learn about this agreement, mort people actually are learning that this is the only viable alternative to be able to control irans already existing nuclear program. People forget when president obama came into office and when i became secretary of state, iran already had tens of thousands of centrifuges. They already had enough material for 10 to 12 bombs. What weve done is roll that program back and provide a capacity to have inspectors go forward so we will know what iran is doing. Something else the only way to control it Something Else that people dont realize is iran cheated in the past. They violated International Law enforcement i dont know anybody that trusts them. There is no trust. This is not based on trust. Thats whats important to understand. Everything in this agreement is verifiable. It is a process by which we will know what theyre doing. If we dont know what theyre doing, we have all the options available to us that we have. Except one of the most controversial aspects of this deal, secretary kerry, is if we suspect the iranians are cheating and not abiding by the rules of this deal, we think its happening at a certain site, they can wait 24 days before allowing International Inspectors into that site. Why would we allow that to happen . Because Nuclear Material, the department of energy has done tests. Theyve had people sand blast, paint over, concrete, do everything to any kind of Nuclear Material you cant get rid of that. Years later we have discovered Nuclear Material in places where people are trying to hide i had. 24 days is nothing. But some experts the iaea says no, smaller portions can be concealed. But not this material. Not what you need to make a bomb. With respect to a bomb, you have to have this will material, you have to have uranium that sen riched. You have to have it. The only way to do that is to go through the enrichment process which we have a limitation on the enrichment process. Once they again to enrich at a higher level, all the bells and whistles will go off. And that well know because we have 24 7 inspection. There has to be a way we can understand. If the police in this city suspect guys around the black were running a meth lab, wouldnt it be better to will cat people and say we think youre doing that and then wait 24 days to go look at that. It is so different from that. This is Nuclear Material. It is it irradiates. You have the ability for 1,000 years. This is not something that you can flush down the toilet. Its not possible. Israel hates this deal. They made no bones about it. Some people do. The former head of shinbet thinks this is a good deal. Prime minister doesnt, i understand that. But there are lots of people in israel who understand this is the best way to proceed in order to roll back irans program and make israel safer. Do you think because many in israel, including the prime minister, are very uncomfortable with this deal that its now making it more likely than two years ago, for example, that israel might attempt some use lateral action, military or cyber attack against iran . I think there will be an enormous mistake, a huge mistake with grave consequences for israel and for the region. And i dont think its necessary. The fact is that we will have for 15 years a restrain on iran that absolutely prevents it from developing a weapon. You cant make a bomb at 3. 67 . Theyll only have 300 kilograms of a stockpile of enriched uranium. You cant make a bomb like. That theyll have inspections on a daily basis in the enrichment facility. Were confident and they take that action, where would it leave us . Would we support israel . Would the treaty go up in smoke . Well, if they bombed them, sure. I presume iran would then have a reason to say well this is why we need a bomb. And what iran will decide to do is dig deeper. Israel doesnt have the ability nor do we unless we went to all out war and literally annihilated iran. If you proceed along a normal reasonable military operation, youre talking about rolling the program back for two to three years. Then what do you do . If you did that, what will irans response be . Most likely to decide now you proven why we need a bomb and they will dig deeper and go out and get it. What people forget is this is not something that may happen in the future, matt. Iran already has enough thistle material for 10 to 12 bomb. Were rolling that back. Thats what makes the world safer. We have a one year breakout for ten years which is eight months more than you have today. So we will have more time to respond. And i mean, i think as people look at this, theyll see the alternative is have no inspectors, not know what iran is doing, go back to where they are today with the ability to make the bomb and then youre going hear everybody say, we have to go bomb them now. Since i have the current secretary of state sitting across from me, let me ask you a question about hillary clinton. The former secretary of state as you heard two inspectors general call for a criminal investigation into her use of that private email server for sensitive information. As someone who occupies the job and knows what information is handled by someone in your position, is this politics or is she in real trouble . All i know is what i read today and learned today actually this morning. Inspector generals operate independently. Thats why they were put there. I dont know what the idea is in at all. We have a whole team work
