thursday, july 16th, 2015. morning, everyone. welcome to "today," a thursday morning. we have willie in for matt. matt is back on monday. a busy news morning. we want to get right to our top story, former president george h.w. bush in the hospital this morning after breaking a bone in his neck. ron allen is at the hospital in portland, maine. what's the latest? >> well, good morning, savannah. we hope to get an update some time later this morning about how things went for the president overnight. now at the hospital some 24 hours or so. we're told the injury is not life threatening and we're told doctors are not concerned about paralysis, but there's a lot of concern concerned about the health of the president who is listed in stable condition. >> former president george h.w. bush is recovering after falling wednesday at his summer home in maine. his spokesman tweeting, 41 fell at home in maine today and broke a bone in his neck. his condition is stable. he is fine, but he'll be in a neck brace. the 41st president who celebrated his 91st birth on june 12th was hospitalized for a week in december 2014 in houston after being admitted for shortness of breath. as the oldest living former president, bush suffers from a form of parkinson's disease that requires him to use a wheelchair or scooter to get around. last year, bush celebrating his 90th birthday by skydiving from 10,000 feet with retired members of the u.s. navy's golden knights. >> how did i look coming down? >> you looked amazing. was it fun? >> yeah. >> overnight, words of support poured onto social media. clelsy clinton tweeded sending all my thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery. >> and larry king tweets sending good wishes to my friend, george bush. >> doctors are likely to be here for several more days. a lot of concern still about the situation here, but most of the word is encouraging. again, in stable condition. probably here a few more days. savannah, back to you. >> all right, ron allen in kennebunkport outside the hospital in portland, maine. >> our medical contributor, good to see you this morning. we don't care how old you are, a neck fracture sounds serious, but at age 91, how serious is this? >> it depends on number one, the underlying condition of the patient, which means if you have arthritis in your neck already, you may not fare as well with a spinal fracture. at the end of the day, it has to do with mostly with the location of the injury and also what's called the mechanism of the injury, was it a blunt force trauma verses a rotational injury. the spinal cord runs through the boni, you know, components of the neck, and if that is impinged upon, obviously, that can lead to paralysis, but a lot of these spinal fractures occur at the boni prominences at the outside of the neck, not in any close proximation to the nerve. >> we know he's strong, but for 91 years old, what do you talk about in terms of recovery and rehab? >> he sounds like he'll be treated and releases which means he'll be in a soft collar for weeks, but based on what we have heard, it sounds like it was a minor injury, again, probably based on where it happened and what happened. he should do fine. >> we're sending our best to president and mrs. bush and inentire bush family. >> now to president obama, a news conference some are calling unplugged. during a more than hour-long conference with reporters, he was emotional, talking about everything from iran to the bill cosby scandal. kristen, good morning. cosby scandal. kristen welker has more. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. for president obama getting the iran deal through congress is key to securing his foreign policy legacy. so in a feisty press conference yesterday, he laid out an impassioned defense for the agreement, but it didn't end there. he also had sharp words for some in the room. he even addressed bill cosby. >> i know -- >> reporter: it was president obama like we have rarely seen him. >> i want to make sure that we're not leaving any stones unturned here. >> reporter: begging reporters to bring it on in the iran debate and taking on critics. >> if we don't choose wisely i believe future generations will judge us harshly for letting this moment slip away. >> reporter: the president argued the deal which requires iran to scale back the nuclear program in exchange for sanctions released is better than the alternative. >> if the alternative is that we should bring iran to heel through military force then those critics should say so. >> reporter: while he's known as no drama obama, he scolded a reporter. >> can you tell the country, sir, why are you content with all the fanfare around this deal to leave the strength of this nation unaccounted for in relation to the four americans? >> major, that's nonsense. and you should know better. >> reporter: still he seemed to >> have we exhausted iran questions here? >> but the most unexpected moment came when he was asked about bill cosby. >> if you give a woman or a man for that matter, without his or her knowledge, a drug and then have sex with that person without consent, that's rape. >> now, president obama didn't weigh in on cosby's case specifically. cosby is accused of drugging and having sex with multiple women decades ago, and he's repeatedly denied the accusations and has never been charged with a crime. meanwhile, today, the president shifts his focus to the criminal justice system. later today, he'll travel to oklahoma city and become the first sitting president to visit a federal prison. savannah, willie. >> kristen welker, thank you. now to one of the candidates trying to replace president obama. the latest poll has donald trump on top of the long list of republicans, and now, his campaign is revising his personal wealth upwards. katy tur tomalked to trump earlier this week. >> donald tromp has promised his financial disclosure this week. we got a barely 400-word press release in which the usual outspoken mag nat is pretty shy. he said he's worth even more than he thought. >> we just went to number one in the polls. >> as donald trump's political fortunes have risen, so, he says, has his bottom line. by more than a billion. the now leading republican in a new usa today poll may have been underselling what he was worth. >> $8.737.540 million. >> after examining his latest financials, it's more than $10 billion, highlighting last year's income at $362 million and his 14-year run on "the apprentice" which earned him $213.6 million. >> we do not think that it adds up to $10 billion. we value his net worth at about $4 billion. >> but proving it to be an exaggeration may be hard. the campaign claimed the filing was not designed for a man of mr. trump's massive wealth. >> subject to interpretation. there's really no certainty to really understand if that's the right number. >> according to forbes, the billionaire has gone into four different corporate bankruptcies even coming on the verge of personal bankruptcy once in the '90s when forbes said he report reportedly had to sell off his yacht, trump shuttle airlines and some business stakes to stay afloat. most candidates shy away from his or her wealth, so why does he flaunt it? part ego, part argument that he won't be beholden to pelsh interest, and part proof he is going to run the country as well as he runs businesses. >> for more on that, let's bring in mark halpern. is it $10 billion, $4 billion? the guy is rich. he has the potential to outspend every republican opponent, so row have to take him seriously. >> he's the richest person by far to run for pridz. it's practical, he can spend a lot of money promoting himself. but i think the biggest thing about it is why is he so popular, why is he unlike anybody in the country? people love success, the notion he's brash and successful. somebody that rich, he has success. >> his critics say he's got a short shelf life. his bubble has to burst at some point. again, he's on top of the polls right now. his favorables are rising, have flipped with his unfavorables in the last couple months. >> he's not at 40% in the polls. he's at 18%, but he's leading. the things to watch, where will trump have problems? people want to look at his college records. they're going to look at his business background, then other republicans will come afte and finally, i think other republicans will start taking his message, forget the negatives on trump, what are his positive positives. i think you'll see some of the republicans steal his target share by stealing his message. >> i wanted to ask you about the president's news conference. he took a question about bill cosby and whether he should have the medal of freedom revoked. he could have dodged the question, taken a path. he did weigh in, as we saw in the piece. why do you think he did that? >> he wanted to use his moral authority to weigh in, not just on the cosby case, but for the issue of sexual assault, which has found greater prominence in the millty, in society, the president feels so strongly about this, he didn't want to let the opportunity pass to again use his moral authority as president, as a father rbszas a husband to speak out. >> good to see you. thank you. >> meantime, the search is expanding for escaped drug kingpin el chapo with law enforcement officials on high alert in mexico alone. we're finding out more about the brazen escape from the prison. mark, good morning. >> good morning, willie. a top dea official says the u.s. will do everything it can to help mexico recapture chapo guzman, but it will not be easy. he has a long history of hiding out and being protected. chapo guzman has now been on the run for five days and still no sign of the billionaire drug lord. wednesday night, cameras were allowed inside his cell, where there's not much left except a square piece of concrete that once covered a hole prison officials say chapo used to make his daring escape. >> cani would be looking over his shoulder. >> his escape has law enforcem officials everywhere on high alert. a top dea agent said to him it's personal. >> we're going to do everything we can to get this guy back in jail. >> officials admit it won't be easy. chapo, which means shorty, is a complex man who has built a legend larger than life. chapo is 60 or 61. he grew up poor and started growing marijuana when he was 14. going on to be named one of the world's richest men by forbes magazine. six years ago, he married his third wife on the day she turned 18. she's a former beauty queen who is also an american. >> it appears that they have a pretty strong, pretty strong relationship, which means she has all the interest in the world to protect him and prevent him from getting captured again. >> chapo may be in hiding, but in social media, his children apparently are not. a twitter and instagram account reportedly run by one of his sons has for years posted pictures of a lavish lifestyle. those who know him describe him as a man of many personality whose is hard to put in any box, also a man who is hard to keep in a jail cell. >> what chapo guzman is more than anything else is a survivor. the man has a talent for survival. he's ruthless. he's brilliant. he's efficient, and he's evil. >> and in an odd twist, investigators say they found a small dead bird in his cell they believe may have been used to test the air quality in his escape tunnel. and later today, top mexican security officials will appear before a subcommittee to ask questions about the escape and how chapo got away. >> mark potter, thanks. >> natalie is hearing scary news from pileot overnight. >> the faa reporting multiple laser incidents against planes at newark airport in new jersey. at least 11 incoming planes were apparently flashed with green light laser on wednesday night. air traffic control responded by changing approach patterns for incoming flights. no injuries reported. authorities in kentucky are searching for several people missing in the aftermath of severe storms. at least three people were killed in flash flooding including a 74-year-old grandmother apparently swept away as she was carried through floodwaters on her grandson's back. the storm leveled some 150 homes and downed dozens of power lines. we'll have more coming up. water officials in california have accepted an offer from tom selleck. offer from tom selleck. the actor was sued for allegedly trucking water in from outside his home. it comes as california residents are forced to cut back on water during the drought. our fascinate with pluto continues. we're getting the look at the planet. the amazing images showing icy range about as high as the rockies on pluto. no impact craters which surprised scientists. the images were captured tuesday during the historic fly by of pluto by nasa's "new horizon" spacecraft. >> they're breathtaking images. >> they are. >> and there was the 7-eleven there.
