want to wait a bit. let's look at some traffic cameras. this is interstate 80. if you want to head out it might be a good time. let's look at another traffic camera golden gate bridge. northbound and southbound a bit slow but moving. earlier today quite heavy because of a crash. had cars inching along but it looks like that has cleared up. and in the south bay, wow wide open. everything is moving. no reports of any major issues on highway 101. that's good news for drivers heading south. nearly 4 million californians expected to hit the roads this fourth of july. as america prepares to celebrate its birthday we're live in santa clara where a big fireworks show will happen for the first time in years, but first that all-important forecast from monthly gist rob mayeda. rob? >> we're seeing is mild temperatures inland. sea breeze keeping the temperatures in the 60s, san jose soaring into the 80s. san francisco moving maybe faster than the traffic on the golden gate bridge. 66 degrees about 4400 feet off the ground right now, and that could be stoertthe story as we head to the evening hours. we get toward 9:00 many will start those fireworks preparations between 9:00 and 9:30. you may see some fog start to creep through. our temperatures right now, you can see the numbers there. cool around san francisco. we'll have some spots tomorrow climbing into the 90s. that sea breeze now bringing some fog into san francisco. going to lead to much cooler changes to your holiday weekend forecast. we'll see that in just a few minutes. fireworks fans and firefighters both getting drid for the fourth of july. festivities kick off for the first time in years here and they have people concerned bill legal fireworks with the fire danger. the push is on for people to go out and see those big professional shows instead. >> that's right, jessica, and california's great america is certainly well aware of the çó concerns concerns. it's fourth of july show will be the first in ten years. as you can see by cameras being loaded loaded behind me they're planning big shows tonight. they're hoping the abundance of shows will cut down on illegal fireworks. california's great america plans to resume its fourth of july show with a big bang even bigger than the first holiday show tonight. but officials know it has to be spectacular and safe. >> we have a lot of water resources right behind us right here, and we create a very safe environment. it's watered down per regulations and everything with recycled water. >> city organizations at various times canceled shows had resumed this year including san jose. response seems enthusiastic. the san jose giants already sold out its fourth of july event and has another planned sunday. >> this is going to be as good as the one downtown. it always is. >> reporter: firefighters say the more shows the better since they say they hope the large selection of shows will cut down on the illegal neighborhood shows. santa clara fire county chief investigator dennis johnson, says many of the powerful illegal fireworks have led to fires and injuries. they sat a top the tower to watch for fire activity while san jose has numerous officers working overtime and will deploy special operations units. >> we'll do selective enforcement in certain areas that have traditionally been hot spots on the fourth of july where people are setting off illegal fireworks. >> reporter: again, firefighters and law enforcement are counting on those professional shows to curb those illegal fireworks, and state patrols will have a zero tolerance attitude in issuing citations or even making arrests. live in santa clara, robert handa, nbc news. there are lots of fireworks shows planned throughout the area this weekend. the san francisco fireworks show is planned for tomorrow night along the waterfront. today at pier 50 four barges are being loaded with fireworks. the show will have a new sequence music and 10,000 fireworks carefully positioned. >> we don't focus as much on the big stuff because of the f word so we try to keep things in the mid to lower range so that if that pesky fog rolls in it doesn't obscure too much we celebrate. the troubling memories the fourth of july celebrations can trigger for bay area veterans. a mother's intuition led to the arrest of a high school track coach. tonight he's in jail accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. nevada police arrested him yesterday after he stepped off a plane from hawaii after vacationing with his wife. christie has more details for us. christie? >> reporter: we're learning that steve deshler is out on bail. a couple students said they were totally caught off guard by this, and we're learning his arrest may have come as a bit of a surprise. steven deshler was taken into custody last night at the oakland airport. >> as he departed from a plane returning from the islands of hawaii where he had been on vacation with his wife. >> reporter: the marin county sheriff's wife said recently a mother came forward concerned about texts involving the 65-year-old track coach and her daughter. >> it determined there was significant cause to arrest deshler for the allegations that he has been having a sexual relationship with the 17-year-old girl. >> reporter: sheriff's did he want -- deputies say it may have happened around april. >> one was at the high school. >> he has been a coach at the high school since 1996. and in part in 2010 all coaches are required to be fingerprinted and/or complete an activity supervisor clearance certificate. in the 2014-15 school year mr. deschler coached the girls' track and cross country teams. they are cooperating with the investigation. investigators say they don't have any reason to believe there are morovick timz related to this but they also say they're not ruling it out. we tried to reach out to steven deschler but didn't hear back. his next court appearance is scheduled for july 26. san jose police want to find two men who attacked and robbed another mana along a trail near the children's discovery museum. it happened near the guadalajara river at 9:00 yesterday morning. the victim was stabbed at least once. he is recovering from his injuries. officers say the robbers ran away tr that area. expect to pay a little more on your electric bill in the coming years. california utility companies are changing the way they charge you. the state just approved a new rate structure today. instead of four different levels of pricing, there will now only be two. it's hard to say exactly how much more you'll be paying but many customers will be paying $10 more on their bills. it will kick in in 2015. protesters are looking for the light to choose their own right to vaccinate their children. earlier this week governor brown signed the bill into law. it mandates that all kids be vaccinated before being allowed to attend school. they said it limits parental rights. >> there is too much question about what goes into vaccines and until we know about the immune system and our children's health we cannot mandate this. >> in response vaccine the getaway this weekend. this is interstate 80 in emoryville. looking good right now if you're heading to the mountains or wine country. if you're driving to the beach, though, you're going to have a lot of company. take a look at this video. there were so many people on highway 17 that the 30-minute drive from santa fe to santa cruz took about two hours. and once you get to the beach, you're going to notice some warning signs about great white sharks. nbc chuck coppola is on shark watch for us. chuck? >> reporter: there are going to be shark warnings at two state beaches. that will jolt you awake if you're a little sleepy after the driver. shark sightings have been found around a local landmark known as the cement ship. it's where one swimmer had a close encounter. sherry fitzgerald had no idea she was swimming with sharks until she came out of the water and went up to a man who had been waving his arms at her. >> he took a picture of me in the water with the shark ten feet away from me. i got out of the water then and decided i don't -- i'm done. >> reporter: the great whites have drifted as close to 20 yards from shore, though most have been seen farther out. >> we've been seeing multiple shark sightings in certain areas. the waters are open the beaches are still open to the public this weekend. >> reporter: shark warnings will stay posted at seacliff and brighton beaches through the weekend and perhaps into next week. though the latest shark sighting was two days ago. >> it is a little bit scary especially with all those shark attacks in north carolina. could happen here. >> reporter: last week a helicopter pilot saw at least 14 great whites near aptoz. great whites have been seen here before but rarely this many as once. >> it's nothing new for me, but i know it's concerning. >> reporter: it's concerning particularly when they spotted 14 at one shot. >> that's interesting in itself 14. >> reporter: the shark warnings are only advisories. no one is being kept out of the water, but getting to the water this holiday weekend may be more difficult than usual. besides highway 17 traffic, a large number of parking spaces won't be available because of fences put up to help law enforcement check bags and coolers for alcohol. >> the fencing is here to try to regulate the access points to the beaches so we can kind of advise the public as they come on so there is no glass, no alcohol, no fireworks. zero tolerance weekend for that. >> reporter: this temporary fence behind me is one of the entry points. sheriff's deputies and local police will be assisting in the search for bags and coolers. and the fine could be as high as $1,000. i'm chuck coppola, nbc news. as you heard, beachgoers in north carolina are also keeping an eye out for sharks this weekend. seven people have been bitten in the last three weeks. it's a record for the state. officials decided not to close the beaches, though this fourth of july. instead the beaches will be fully staffed to keep a close eye on swimmers and surfers out there in the water. a hero even off the clock. an off-duty firefighter saved a family from a burning home in east san jose. the fire broke out at 1:00 a.m. fighter fighter saw smoke coming from the attic and helped get the fire out. red cross also arrived with emergency services. fire crew said there wasn't much damage because of the quick response. authorities believe it was an electrical fire. a brush fire that broke out yesterday near sinole in alameda county. it's causing this large haze of smoke still settling in the hills. this is in a remote area near kalumaris. video confrontations with doctors are pretty common but now pet owners can take advantage of the same technology. >> it will allow pet owners to keep in contact with their vet any time of the day and night. and a warning about the service from vets. >> if your pet is having an issue in the middle of the night, they can connect with a vet to ask questions. but they warn that it's not a replacement for coming for a visit. >> he is doing better so he will head home today. >> we like to see them at home eating and drinking and doing normal stuff. >> this doctor in mountain view says many of his patients have chronic issues. in the past it meant time consuming and sometimes expensive checkups for pet parents. >> veterinarians have been slow technology adoption users. >> and dr. sterns is one of the 240 vets in the area participating in a new app called vet 24/7. pet owners can request a conference with their own vet, ask questions. on the screen to the left. you see san francisco, and what you can see of it right now, misty skies. that's a little foreboding with the tops of downtown disappearing into the fog right now. into san jose we've been seeing our temperature drop as the sea breeze reaches the santa clara valley around 75. fog for sure snoutin the south bay. notice inland. quite a few locations inland did warm up a few degrees, especially downtown san jose. san ratin warmer than yesterday. we are rain free and should stay that way. where the action is is towards the sierra. the weekend now, watching those low clouds in san francisco. that will spill inland for the morning, and as we start tomorrow morning off, we'll have some patchy drizzle and mist even around places like hayward and oakland. for the afternoon, mostly sunny skies, but watch it if your fourth of july plans include tahoe or reno. that could cause some major travel problems along interstate 80 especially for areas north of southlake tahoe. if you want to find some sun on the beaches tomorrow that should be your spot tomorrow. temperatures in the 70s for santa cruz. mid-80s in the forecast. notice san francisco in the upper 60s. may be briefly toward 70 though clouds will come in in the evening. tri valley you'll see highs in the upper 80s and low 90s out towards walnut creek. oakland over towards berkeley fairly comfortable washington. >> you can also expect tighter security in the bay area. a light on the golden gate bridge more people driving over it this weekend. there will be additional police out on patrol. officers will be positioned where large groups of people will be gathered. in the south bay, pyrotechnic crews are gearing up for a fireworks show that happens tonight. you're looking at a live picture right now. that's the launch pad. in just a few minutes, they started watering down the area of course, as a precaution so sparks don't catch the dry grass on fire. it's the first time in a decade that great america has planned a fireworks show. lots of people anxious to see it. the question is will they be able to? here's the man who has the answer to that. our meteorologist rob mayeda. well rob? >> santa clara probably one of the best spots around the bay area. a little different story, though if you're out on the coastline toward san francisco. we have some live video for you toward santa cruz. you can see the fog sweeping in. hazy skies out there right now. we're seeing more up the coast in san francisco and across the north bay as we show you the time lapse in tiburon. you can see the golden gate during the day, and as we moved into the afternoon, the fog has kind of taken over right now. san francisco, you can see the clouds coming in across the santa monica pier and not too much higher than this you'll see the fireworks exploding in the sky. if that was the case this evening, you would see blue and pink clouds. the next three hours shows the fog already spilling over towards oakland. we have fireworks if he isfestivities there in san francisco. we'll see some low clouds approaching livermore by 9:00. you saw santa clara there, great america looks pretty good. some low clouds approaching from the north and we'll see mainly clear skies this evening around the santa clara valley and we'll see a similar forecast setting up for tomorrow. inland inland temperatures still in the low 90s. as we head toward tomorrow evening, we'll have a closer hour by hour look toward san francisco specifically and the rest of your bay area holiday weekend forecast in a few explosions and the scent of gun powder can also trigger problems for veterans. damian will tell us more about what we can do to respect the veterans on this holiday when it comes to fireworks. >> yeah you know veterans tell me sometimes the fireworks remind them of the war zone a place they want to forget. tonight a plea for compassion from our vets. they're an american tradition on independence day, but fireworks are also a worry for many who fought for the liberties this country enjoys. >> we're all human beings we all have triggers. >> omar served two tours in iraq and one in afghanistan. he is being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder, and sometimes he says the spontaneous pop from a firework can be one of those triggers for him. >> sometimes it's a little bit overwhelming. >> veterans groups are posting these lawn signs across the country, alerting the public to the potential impact of illegal fireworks. >> it really can trigger bad memories for someone with ptsd to hear loud noises that remind them of gunfire or the smell of even firecracker. >> fran mcvey is president of the county's united veterans council. vietnam vets ask if families are going to light up know who their neighbors are first. >> the veteran is not going to be able to control his reaction. certainly if you have something planned, reach out and say, will this bother you, and be sensitive and appreciative of that. >> don't judge, because you might not know exactly what that vet has experienced. >> reporter: attend a public event instead, say the veterans and enjoy america's birthday stage. >> there is nobody else that can replicate what these guys do in concert. and that's why all of us have been to hundreds and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of shows. >> reporter: at least 70,000 people are expected to attend tonight's grateful dead concert. some have tickets to all three shows. >> i've traveled 24 hours to get here in a car, a little toyota corolla. >> where are you from? >> san frantasco. >> reporter: this is the first of three concerts for the 50th anniversary farewell tour. they chose chicago, then jerry garcia played his final concerts here at soldier field. >> we continue doing all of this even though jerry passed away in 1995. >> we were a bit younger, but we're all loving the music and can't wait to be part of something so spectacular. >> reporter: people come and spend the entire day shopping tailgating and just hanging out. it's all part of the deadhead culture. >> you never know how long this music is going to go on. it's going to go on after these guys are gone and it's going to be going on after we're all gone. >> well if you're not going to the grateful dead concert, watch the fireworks show. not in san francisco, in new york. it's macy's fireworks spectacular. you can watch it live on our nbc bay area app. the show begins at 8:00 with fireworks from the brooklyn bridge and performances from kelly clark son, brad paisley, among others. let's check in with rob mayeda. the temperatures are actually bearable. >> the humidity is lowering and that's helping, too. look at san francisco through the day. temperatures climbing in the 60s. san jose has seen from mt. hamilton looking down on the santa clara valley. mid-80s today. mid-60s close to san francisco should see about the same trend as we head towards tomorrow. very interesting as we head toward east bay. especially differences in bayside location 60 to 70 where low clouds are already sweeping in clearing things off. you can see over towards sunol, 82. 83 in livermore right now, and here's the view from sunol. 82 degrees, clear skies and no low clouds in sight there in sunol. different story as you get over towards san francisco where the sea breeze has taken hold. you can see temperatures here nowhere near the spread like you're seeing in the east bay. a closer view san francisco, you can kind of see the bay bridge through the low clouds. 66 right now. that will be the big story tomorrow, just how quickly the low clouds sweep in for the afternoon and what depth they will be. right now it looks like those low clouds are pretty close to 400 feet off the ground which means maybe those fireworks could be disappearing in the clouds. interestingly enough this morning we had one more little wave of clouds come through, and that did drop a few brief downpours around the peninsula and more activity leaving the north bay in the afternoon. now all the action has kind of migrated off toward the sierra. that's where all the humidity the thunder and lightning has tracked toward the sierra. for lake county northward tomorrow and especially interstate 80 north, there is still the chance of seeing some thundershowers. we should not see those thundershowers closer to home for a change but if you're heading for the high country, watch out for risk of thundershowers toward the afternoon. we're looking at mid-80s again for san jose. closer to 90 for morgan hill. saratoga loss gatos should be on the warm side. into the north bay, you'll see highs in the low 80s tomorrow. we should see a south wind. that will keep our numbers in the upper 70s to low 80s straight through the weekend, and tri valley temperatures in the 80s and 90s. you can see a cooling in the 7-day forecast and because that far cooling and the sea breeze the issue here is the low cloud cover which will be sweeping in right around the same time tomorrow like we're seeing tonight. so very likely it looks like san francisco will be looking at those low clouds moving in, and over toward the east bay and tri valley, you will also see low clouds trying to creep in toward liverton. we may see clear skies here but downtown san jose clearly the best spot for fireworks viewing at this point. we do expect some of those patchy low clouds and fog to move itn. you'll want to bundle up in the 60s. we have the temperatures cooling off as low clouds move in. temperatures out on the coast with brief sunshine at times. not too bad for your holiday weekend plans. low 70s around big sur. towards carmel you'll see misty skies for the morning. temperatures close to 70 and
