Jesse M. Barnes, 24, was convicted of committing mischief by breaking his mother’s iPhone. He was given enhanced credit on 38 days of pretrial custody and sentenced to time served. Barnes was at his mother’s home in late September and intoxicated, according to assistant Crown attorney John Skoropada, and they became embroiled in an argument. Barnes wanted to be driven to another town, he told Justice Rommel Masse, and his mother disagreed with his plans. Barnes then grabbed his mother’s iPhone, the judge was told, and threw it on the ground, breaking it. Barnes’ lawyer, Matt Hodgson, told the judge that everything on his client’s record is reflective of his drinking problem. However, he hadn’t been drinking at all from about May 2020 until shortly before the incident at his mother’s house, according to Hodgson, and then he fell off the wagon. Barnes apologized for his behaviour in court and told Justice Masse that his parents didn’t deserve to be treated that way, and the judge concurred, observing to Barnes that his mother was “just looking out for you.”
