A chaotic and dangerous scene in oakland as several people are injured in a shooting that happened right after graduation ceremonies wrapped up at a high school. Good evening. Thank you for joining us. Im dan ashley. We know tonight that two people were hit by gunfire. This happened right around 745 tonight. Abc seven News Reporter j. R. Stone is live at the scene. We got the latest from police just a short time ago j. R. Still a lot of police out there. What do you have for us . Yeah. Dozens of officers out here tonight dan here at skyline high school. This is still an active crime scene. And i can tell you we learned within the last hour that two people had been shot, a male and female, both in the hospital right now and both in stable condition. The principal of this school does tell us that this was after graduation ceremonies. I did talk with witnesses a little while ago. This is what they had to say. You start seeing the people running and everything like that. They were running . Yeah. Oh, yeah. Anybody hell, i started ducking down, trying to figure out you. Just trying to figure out. Was it some kind of pop, like, celebration or what . They were popping off the little confetti poppers and i thought it was all cool. And then everyone started running and we saw hella smoke. I dont know what happened, but it sounded like someone was driving by. We saw the smoke, heard the popping, it was that was just a series of sound. Like someone had an automatic gun at one point. This is cell phone video showing some of the moments that played out. There appears to be some sort of fight, and then gunshots can be heard along with yelling police are calling this an isolated incident. But thats all we know that both the male and female who were shot are adults. I asked if they are students, but officers didnt have didnt have the answer to that. Lieutenant spoke a little while ago. We just finished up with a search of the school, with the assistance with chp, the school is currently clear. Safe, at the moment, we are in the preliminary stage of the investigation. Our investigators are out, piecing all the information together, and they say that its running. Yeah. Tough scene for so many different people out here. I saw a lot of hugs. Students hugging their parents who came to meet them later on when they finally left this area. At this point, no suspect description has been given. No vehicle description has been given at this point, and no arrests have been made. The new police chief here in oakland was on scene but did not speak, with reporters reporting live in oakland. J. R. Stone, abc seven news. Just a shame j. R. Thanks very much. Now just into our newsroom, the message the principal of skyline high sent to families this evening. It reads in part, quote, there is no place for this kind of behavior at skyline. We must resolve our differences in other ways and not resort to violence to work out problems, she adds. Staff from the district will be available to any students needing emotional support now. We sent a mobile alert as soon as news broke of this shooting tonight, you can access more live breaking news when it happens by downloading the abc seven news bay area app for your phone or on apple tv, google tv, roku and amazon fire tv. Lets move now to the peninsula, a high school there is putting the distribution of yearbooks on hold because a senior quote was actually an acronym for a racial slur. Cappuccino high school in san bruno had already handed out more than 100 yearbooks when this discovery was made yesterday. Its now asking those students to return them. We went to the high school tonight where there was a softball game and found some people were clearly angry about what had happened. This is upsetting and it happens all the time. 72 years old and still happening. So its not better. Its still happening. The school is now in the process of covering up the offensive language in the remaining yearbooks with tape. The school says if students try to remove it, the page will tear. In a letter, the principal says in part, quote, i interviewed the student and they admitted that this was their intention, using hate speech as serious consequences, which may include suspension, exclusion from Year End School activities and the graduation ceremony. End quote. Happening now. An active Police Investigation going on in san jose after a woman was found dead inside a home. This happened on shadow dance drive near highway 87. Police are not saying a whole lot about this incident other than her body was discovered just before 11 a. M. There was a heavy Police Response when abc seven news crews were on the scene this evening. As the Investigation Continues in the east bay, a pair of fires kept firefighters very busy. This afternoon in antioch. The first one was off slaton ranch road near highway four and the ebart station. It happened just before 4 p. M. And grew to about ten acres. It spread because the wind was pushing it. Sky seven got there when firefighters were mopping up. You can see what appears to be a pile of fencing and other debris, but they got it out pretty quickly. Not far away, this fire at the antioch marina. It blackened about five acres before firefighters brought it under control. No one was hurt in this fire either, and we have not heard about the cause or if the two fires are connected in some way. All right. I want to give you a first look at the weather. It was, as i said, breezy out there which fanned those flames. Meteorologist sandhya patel is here with your 24 hour, four hour accuweather forecast. Sandhya yeah. And dan, the wind is still with us tonight. Let me show you a live picture from our Golden Gate Bridge camera. The biggest change we are experiencing is its a murkier view. So clouds and fog gathering tonight. Visibility down to five miles in half moon bay. Something youll need to watch out for if youre commuting tomorrow or youre getting out of town. 7 00 clouds and fog. Temperatures in the 50s. Partly cloudy by noontime, and we are looking at a breezy to gusty wind and a cooler day. Upper 50s to mid 70s clouds up again by evening, so going hour by hour you can see those winds will remain elevated, getting stronger, especially near the coast. Tomorrow afternoon and evening. There is going to be a change in our pattern as we head into the weekend. Ill be back with those details coming up. Dan. Okay sandhya, thanks a lot. Touch base in a few minutes. Now to the south bay and a story weve been following for quite some time actually was last year when dozens of koi were stolen from a san jose garden, but thats just one of several problems the city is dealing with. Abc seven news south bay reporter Lauren Martinez got an update for you tonight. The Japanese Friendship garden in san jose is lush and serene, but the koi ponds are empty long before alex hirata was a park ranger, she remembers coming to the garden with her mom growing up. I remember when these ponds were absolutely full, the citys Park Department says the ponds have been dry since a flood of 2017, when the pump houses were damaged, and since then the cost for repairs has been slow. When things happen, we get to see those effects for a while after recovery takes time. One year ago, park officials discovered 50 koi were stolen from their private holding tanks. Harada tells us theres no further information on their whereabouts to date. In 1965, 300 koi were gifted to san jose from the city of okayama, japan. So its actually such a privilege to continue to be part of the history of these parks in such a personal way. Well, not every pond is empty. One out of the three is still full of koi fish that are descendants from the ones that were gifted back in the 1960s, probably about in the content right now, probably between 60 and 80 fish. We spoke with park goers to hear their thoughts. Well, we were wondering what happened actually that there was no water. Kiana is visiting from the netherlands and saw pictures of the park online. Yeah, it didnt match expectations, i would say. But its still nice though. Soon to be Oak Grove High School graduate darius meza said the garden is a beautiful backdrop. He looks forward to seeing the ponds restored. Its too beautiful not to be up to what it could be, you know, and people come here and if they see the water, they just want to keep coming back. And i feel like thats just the best for the park, harada said. Repairs for the ponds is in the budget for next year. In the meantime, people can still enjoy what the japanese style tea garden has to offer. This is a beautiful, meditative walking garden. It feels like were somewhere completely different, away from the hustle and bustle of all the traffic in san jose. Lauren martinez, abc seven news.
