Also ahead, were going to talk about the latest strike to hit the nation. Casino workers now join autoworker, hospitality workers and actors all on the picket lines. We begin with President Biden home from his trip to israel after accomplishing a critical goal, getting humanitarian aid into gaza for the millions trapped there. President set to address the nation on the wars in israel and ukraine this evening. He was forceful in his support of israel why trying to prevent israel from taking action that could spark a wider regional war. George is going to speak live to the deputy correspondent in a moment. Our chief Foreign Correspondent ian pannell starts us off in israel. Good morning. Reporter good morning, robin. We are in a kibbutz one mile from the border with gaza. On the morning of october 7th, hamas militants came in here on a rampage. They burned, they destroyed, they killed and they kidnapped. As a reminder of how we got to where we are, lots of discussions on going about humanitarian aid getting into gaza as this war drags on. Overnight President Biden brokering a deal to deliver aid to millions of palestinians trapped in gaza. The president saying egypt will now open a crossing along gazas southern border allowing a limited number of trucks filled with humanitarian aid to reach the millions of people looking to escape the bombing. I wanted to make sure there was a vehicle, a mechanism, that this could happen quickly. This has been a very blunt negotiation i have had. If hamas doesnt let it get through, just confiscates it, then its gonna end. Reporter because the roads are damaged by israeli bombing, the aid may not arrive until tomorrow at the earliest. A source familiar with the effort telling abc news eight convoys and personnel from the u. S. Embassy in cairo are as close to the crossing as possible and are ready to send aid across. The promise of relief is too late for the rising casualties in gaza. More than 3,400 killed since a massacre in israel by hamas who murdered 1,400 and took more than 200, including americans, hostage. Israel vowing to eradicate hamas, retaliating with thousands of air strikes. Just hours ago, palestinians seen digging desperately to rescue children buried in the rubble of their bedroom, bombed as they slept. Anger and protests throughout the region after that catastrophic explosion into a gaza hospital which reportedly killed hundreds of civilians according to Palestinian Health authorities. Hamas claims the hospital was hit by an israeli air strike, but israel said it was hit by a waywar rocket fired by islamic militants. Video shows the moment of the blast. Amid growing questions about whats happened and whos to blame. What we saw here was a bright fireball, which is closer to what you would see out of a residual fuel out of say a rocket that hadnt finished its full time of flight. Reporter the israeli saying theyve reviewed intelligence and aerial footage that proves Islamic Jihad was responsible for the attack. The u. S. Is conducting its own investigation but backs israeli analysis that it wasnt one of their strikes. Based on the information we have seen today, it appears the result of an errant rocket fired from a terrorist group in gaza. Reporter but an nsc official telling abc news the u. S. Still hasnt determined if palestinian Islamic Jihad was at fault. Pro palestinian demonstrations erupting around the world. Some angry at americas support for israel, with massive crowds gathering outside of u. S. Embassies. In beirut, lebanon, one protester attaching a palestinian flag to the u. S. Embassy there. And on this street, amid the chaos, abcs mola lenghi. Reporter as you can see, protesters pushing back against Security Forces, started by throwing rocks, launching fireworks. Its been a constant push and pull between Security Forces and the protesters who are trying to push up against the american embassy. They say they are outraged at israels bombardment of palestinian citizens and the u. S. Support for it. Reporter the uk now advising its citizens in lebanon to leave now, while commercial options remain available, advising people not to travel to lebanon at all amid fear that the conflict will spread. Overnight the idf releasing this video, saying they attacked military targets along the lebanese border retaliating against attacks by the iranian backed hezbollah. Weve been speaking to the son of one of the residents here who was taken hostage. The 80yearold came out of his house to protect his wife and surrendered to the militants. His son says he hasnt heard from him since. He believes that number thats now written of hostages is actually significantly higher. George . Ian pannell, thanks. John, thank you for joining us this morning. Lets start with those humanitarian aid convoys. When will they get through . Thanks for having me, george. This was obviously a major priority of President Bidens visit to the region and diplomacy that he has done directly with several regional leaders on the phone in the last couple of days. As your reporter indicated, there is more prepatory work that needs to be done to make sure the road is passable. The road needs to be repaired and checked. But there are trucks lined up and ready to go. We expect those to move in the next day or so. Okay. The president had a difficult balancing act in israel, balancing strong support of israel with a message of restraint. Is it possible to destroy hamas without a large scale Ground Invasion . Look, george. I think the president was carrying three primary messages when he went to the region. One was, obviously, our continued show of solidarity and support for the israeli people in this time of National Trauma and crisis and response. Second, a message of resolve to anyone who might seek to take advantage of this moment, anyone hostile to israel. They should not make that mistake. Third, a message of commitment to the civilians caught up in this. Also for his messaging that this conflict must be conducted consistent with principles of International Law and International Humanitarian law. Thats what im asking. Is it possible to destroy hamas without israel going in . Were going to see this play out over the course of the coming days. This is an extremely challenging place to conduct military operations. Its densely populated, more than 2 Million People in a relatively small area. Hamas, as you well know, makes its mission to hide among civilian population. Not trying to minimize casualties amongst their own people, but in many ways assuring they are going to take place. One of the things we are going to be doing is consulting with israeli officials, with Israeli Military commanders and making sure they have a clear plan to do this in a way that minimizes the loss of civilian life. Whats the latest on the hostages . Is qatar making any progress in getting some of them out . Were obviously engaged in intensive diplomatic activity related to the hostages. But also have sent a number of experts to the region to consult with israeli who are involved in hostage extraction. I dont want to get ahead of any of those conversations. These are the most sensitive things that we are working on. And the president has said it is a top priority for us to get as many of those hostages out as soon as possible as we absolutely can. Were going to hear from the president tonight on the wars in israel and ukraine. Is one of his messages to prepare the United States for a possible war with iran . The president is not going to be focused on that message. What the president is going to be doing is laying out for the American People a description of this moment that we are in. A crisis in ukraine that has been going on now more than a year and a half. An emerging crisis with our close friend and ally in israel. And connect that National Movement to american lives back here and why this is a moment in which the Administration Needs to respond and we believe congress as well needs to act to make sure that we have the resources to be able to continue our leadership. John finer, thank you very much for your time this morning. Thank you. Michael . Thank you, george. Now to the latest on the battle for house speaker. Jim jordan failing to secure enough votes on his second try. Our senior Congressional Correspondent rachel scott is tracking this on capitol hill. Good morning, rachel. Reporter michael, good morning. Day 16, no speaker of the house. Congressman jim jordan is losing even more ground. Some republican holdouts say they are facing threats, a sign of just how hostile this fight has become. This morning congressman jim jordan facing growing opposition after republicans blocked his bid for speaker again. A speaker has not been elected. Reporter this time he lost even more support. 22 republicans opposed on the second ballot. He can only afford to lose four. To be clear, youre staying in this race . Yep. Reporter youre not considering dropping out . Nope. Reporter jordan ready to fight, but some republicans not budging. This is not a give me this or else. This is a united front that has collectively decided that hes not the best choice for speaker of the house. Reporter those holdouts facing increasing pressure. Congressman don bacon said hes been flooded with calls, his wife even getting hit with menacing messages. My wife has been getting anonymous texts and anonymous phone calls to try to compel her to force me to change my vote, which is wrong. Thats crossing boundaries. Reporter Congress Woman Mary Miller Meeks revealed shes getting a barrage of threatening calls after withdrawing her support for jordan. With the house still paralyzed even some of jordans supporters say it may be time to start considering other options. The world is burning and i dont think many people we represent want us spending days upon days deciding who sits in the chair. Reporter one of those options, giving temporary speaker congressman Patrick Mchenry more power. So the house can get back to work. Mchenry not interested. I am putting in my vote for jim jordan. Reporter jordan not giving in. We proved we can get over 200 people to support us. We just got to get a few more. Reporter the house is set to reconvene in a few hours. Overnight jim jordan condemning threats against his colleagues insisting its imperative for republicans to come together, george. Rachel, thank you very much. Now to detroit where casino workers have joined autoworkers and others on the picket line. Its the latest in a wave of union strikes. Alex perez is tracking it all. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning, george. No doubt this has been the year of strikes. Casino workers are the latest to hit the picket lines. Its the first time theyve gone on strike. Some 3,700 casino workers are on strike. The group is composed of five unions that includes dealers, custodians, engineers and more. Collectively the unions say they are calling for higher wages, Retirement Security and other benefits and argue that while casino revenue has reached record highs and surpassed prepandemic levels, compensation has not kept up. Casino workers now join autoworker, hospitality workers and actors who are also on strike. In fact, this year there have been 317 strikes across the country involving some 450,000 workers. For now those casinos remain open with limited staffing, but its unclear just how long this strike will last. Guys . Alex, thank you very much. Lot of frustration out there.
