Thats according to the Washington Post this morning and comes as Officials Say the attacks near the gaza border have killed at least 500 israelis, more than 230 palestinians have been killed in retaliatory attacks. Thousands more on both sides are injured. This all began with a surprise attack by hamas military force. They fired thousands of rockets from gaza into israel saturday. Hamas claims it has captured dozens of israelis, including soldiers. A state of alert for war has been declared by the Israeli Defense forces and the attack is drawing worldwide condemnation. President joe biden reaffirming us support for israel yesterday from the white house. The United States stands with the people of israel in the face of these terrorist assaults. Israel has the right to defend itself and its people. This is not a moment for any party hostile to israel to exploit these attacks, to seek advantage. The world is watching. White house Officials Say its too early to know if iran had any involvement with the attacks in israel. The fbi and the department of Homeland Security have issued a Public Safety notification to Law Enforcement across the us, urging them to stay vigilant during the ongoing situation. And back in the bay area, were getting local response to the conflict as well as a better understanding of whats behind it. Abc7 News ReporterTara Campbell spoke to a variety of experts on the conflict in the middle east at the site and sounds of chaos in the middle east. A palestinian attack and israeli response. Yes, i think this is one of the most significant moments of palestine indian resistance that we have ever seen. George bisharat is an emeritus professor at uc law San Francisco and an expert on the middle east. Certainly the most significant military act of resistance ever against israel by the palestinians. And he says the palestinian attack has likely been long in the making for hamas to be able to pull this off in a surprise way like this is an incredible feat. Now, you know, whatever you make of it, its as a as a matter of a military operation, pretty incredible. As a jew and i know i speak for my jewish colleagues in the legislature, we are all both horrified and terrified about whats happening in israel. State senator scott wiener is a member of the california legislative jewish caucus. Israel is not perfect by any stretch. I have my own very public criticisms, but what happened today crosses a red line. Nothing justifies the terrorist attacks that we saw today. This is a horrific day. The violence that were seeing today is disturbing to everyone who cares about peace and justice. Edward ackman. Mitchell leads the council on American Islamic relations until the occupation ends here, were going to keep seeing this cycle of violence repeated self for years and years to come. And as for what comes next, the professor says it could go several ways as the fact of the number of hostages provides the palestinians with a significant leverage against the israeli state power and may cause a quicker end to this than and less violent end to this than we might otherwise see. Or he says israel could respond as it has in the past. Another scenario is that israel will mass go ahead and do as it has done in the past. And possibly even worse. And that was Tara Campbell reporting. Now to afghanistan, where the death toll is rising following a series of powerful earthquakes there. The taliban says more than 2000 people have died. The strongest of the quakes was a 6. 3 magnitude quake. It struck about 25 miles from the western city of herat. Many buildings were damaged, trapping people in the rubble. And there were at least three powerful aftershocks. Officials in maui are urging the governor of hawaii to delay the reopening of the western side of the island to tourist. Its plan to reopen in phases starting today. Of course, wildfires devastated the town of lahaina back in august. And yesterday, maui county officials voted unanimously, unanimously on a resolution to postpone the reopening, claiming residents need more time to heal and rebuild. And the maui wildfires claim 97 lives left more than 30 people missing, making the fires the deadliest in us history. Well, a neighborhood assistant city was evacuated saturday as a wildfire threatedheir homes and the cause is still unknown. But homeowrsay the flames near wiley le came dangerously close to their houses. Abc seven News Reporter unser hassan has their story. Late late saturday evening, fire crews continued to monitor the aftermath of a wildfire that burned more than 30 acres in suisun city, threatening nearby homes and businesses. How close was the fire to your facility . I would have to say literally in our backyard. And it would have came in if the fence wasnt there. Jasmine peete is the sales supervisor at pick and pull an auto dismantling shop which sells car parts. The damage along the entire back fence line shows how the fire was kept out. That likely prevented another problem, says peete. Given the potential toxic material at the facility, we deal with a lot of chemicals, fluids like gas, oil , freon, sometimes we even deal with hazardous waste. We did have a response from cal fire and they did do an air drop for us, which helped contain the blaze as well. Captain maddy scott with sassoon Fire Protection district was the first on scene. He says the fire broke out around 12 noon and quickly spread as the winds began to pick up speed. Despite the wet winter, the grass is dry, which is always a concern for this time of year, says captain maddy, especially here in Solano County. This is still fire season. Yeah, october. Even into november, we always get a warm spell for this time of year in october. So this is can be expected in this part of the state. The fire also prompted an Evacuation Order for the nearby neighborhood. All of a sudden we just see a bunch of smoke blow into our backyard and got dark. There was ash just immediately blown into our faces and it was orange and super scary. The macy family was evacuated for four hours. When they got home, they found parts of their backyard damaged by the fire burnt fence and plants, ashes everywhere, but no reports of injuries. And the family is just thankful to be safe. Yeah, im so happy we see. So happy to see my all neighbors are good. Theyre all safe. The cause of the fire is still unknown in Solano County and san hassan. Abc seven news. Such a close call for them. And as the threat of wildfires increases, were learning that what your house is made of and small changes to your property can have a big impact on how vulnerable you and your home are. Abcs matt gutman has more on the latest fire safety research. Were at a one of a kind Test Facility where researchers study the science of wildfires. Something ive spent much of my career covering for abc news in california. Wow. The intensity of that is absolutely enormous. The heat is overwhelming. Its almost nothing they could do with that wind. This is a firestorm. Were going to the other side of the car here at the Insurance Institute for business and home safety or ebay, is that powerful wind is simulated by this towering wall of more than 100 industrial strength fans is blasting those red hot embers toward structures. And this helps scientists learn what kinds of Building Materials will burn and what can withstand the hot fury of mother nature. Experts say its those scorching embers, though tiny, that can turn small fires into town, destroying events. It was those wind driven embers in maui in august that experts say helped the historic and deadly inferno to spread so fast, killing at least 97 people and engulfing more than 2000 structures. Most of them homes. But not this one featured in the Honolulu Civil Beat virtually unscathed. Some called it a miracle, but researchers at ibhs point to two factors that likely saved the structure. A commercial grade steel roof and riverside stones surrounding the home. The homeowners telling the civil beat they replace their traditional landscaping with the stones not to protect their home from fire, but from water and termite damage. Little do they know that one of the key tactics that teaches is creating a minimum of a five foot fire resistant buffer zone around your home using hardscape and noncombustible fencing. Think of it like your moat. You are keeping wildfire and embers away from your structure. This time lapse video shows a fire ignited along a fence between two structures. Watch as the fire never reaches the home on the right because it cant pass through that metal fence. The wooden fence on the left, however, acts like a wick of a candle, bringing the fire directly to the house and now theyve built a home just for us. You can see there are two distinct sides here. One has this wooden mulch outside. Do you see a wooden deck . Wooden siding. The other side is a wildfire prepared home. These are fire resistant siding. As you can see, the metal in the deck, that fence, the part that actually touches the house that is also made out of metal. And you can see theres hardscaping all around. So under the supervision of the richburg fire department, we fired up those ember generators and they allow me to step right in their path. And in just minutes, as these embers are coming in fast and just now, this is the start of a fire right underneath this bush here, right next to the deck. This could be the thing that ignites this whole house here, this deck, the one made out of steel or nothing. And this deck right now is catching fire. That thing is going to blow up this deck is now completely engulfed in flames. Its going to take this out in less than two minutes later. It did exactly that. All the while, the right side remained seemingly untouched. This house is virtually gone. You can hear it. You can feel the heat from those flames right now. It is absolutely massive. And you can see how quickly that wooden side of this house was engulfed in flames. Its in the eaves right now, which also means its going through those vents. Those vents were covered in steel protective mesh, but they were the wrong size. The hole is so big they let the embers through. The rule of thumb here is that you dont want mesh that can have a nail or a golf tee. Go through it. You want it to be a bit finer than that, something that can block this stuff that way the embers cant get through that mesh and into your home. Right now, the firefighters are about to come in and douse this thing because its gotten too hot. That was matt gutman reporting and meteorologist lisa arjun is tracking the forecast. That research, lisa, so timely right now, especially in october. We know how critical this can be for wildfire season. Thankfully, though, weve been relatively fortunate. We have. We havent had the offshore winds this time around that usually go with that extreme heat. But, you know, october is not over yet. So there is certainly a chance were going to see the heat come back. But as for today, big time cooling. Yesterday, we set a record of 92 in oakland. How about 70 . 13 degrees cooler today with mid 70s. The dense fog advisory is with us along the peninsula. The Golden Gate Bridge down through monterey and santa cruz. And theres a cold front on the way. So certainly doing a 180 for the first half of the upcoming workweek, 54. And you cant see anything at all down around Half Moon Bay, our dense fog advisory through 10 00. It is 62 in oakland, 53 in santa rosa. And that 50 cool for you in novato with about 60 in livermore. So heres a look outside just a little bit of fog trying to enter the bay. Were going to see another Sunny Afternoon despite our cooldown still 5 to 10 degrees above average inland taking us to around 90. But boy, thats a big improvement from yesterdays 100 degrees around travis. And as we get to your monday, could see some showers dotting the landscape. Heres a look at the next 24 hours as we look at all the fog this morning. And then we break out into mostly sunny conditions. The fog is at the coast and it will be breezy and much cooler today for the blue angels. But well see sunny skies around the bay. That fog wants to creep in late in the afternoon. And as we get towards your overnight hours into monday, a cold Front Holding together very early monday, bringing rain to sonoma and napa, stopping this at 10 00. So you can see how well have the showers north of the golden gate. But if you could slip to the south and east. But as we go through the next few hours into the afternoon, this certainly falls apart. So rainfall amounts will favor the coastal hills, the west sloping hills from the peninsula up to the north bay with a couple hundredths. Thats about it. And we ma
