People are out paying their respects all along the route she got everything together. It was a beautiful city. Its still a beautiful city, but she was very well known and she took care of San Francisco. She led during a dark time in the city and brought a beacon of light and hope to us. And she will be sorely missed. And we heard that throughout at San Francisco. Senator feinstein loved this city and she certainly fought for the city. A book of condolences will be available for you to sign at city hall through wednesday. Many were calling for the governor to pick longtime bay area representative barbara lee to fill the seat. She tweeted this, saying in part, quote, i wish laphonza be well and look forward to working closely with her to deliver for the golden state. Former House Speaker nancy pelosi was a good friend of the late Dianne Feinstein. Pelosi says feinsteins death inspired lawmakers to get a deal done and avoid a Government Shutdown over the weekend. I can hardly talk about it without because she was my neighbor. My friend. My family loved her personally, politically, in every way. We used to always say, if dianne and i ran against each other, my daughter nancy would probably vote for dianne. That was the love that existed. But love is a good word for her because she loved people. She loved california. She loved america. And to bring her home in the grand way that we did this new federal funding deal keeps the government running for another 45 days until november 17th. Jobina is at the live desk with how both sides are now reacting to it. Jobina. Thank you, reggie. The deal may have gotten done, but it might cost House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy his job. So Florida House republican matt gaetz is threatening to introduce a motion that would allow house members to eject mccarthy from the speakership with the majority vote. Gates is not happy with mccarthy for brokering a deal with democrats and, quote, not reining in spending. Its unclear if that motion would have enough support to remove mccarthy. But some democrats said they are in favor of it as well. The plan includes 16 billion in Disaster Relief aid, also for goes funding for ukraine a nonstarter for many House Republicans who instead want to boost Border Security spending. Republican Lindsey Graham saying here that senators are working on legislation to fund both priority is to the republicans who say ukraine doesnt matter to us. Youre wrong. Respectfully youre wrong. The war gets bigger, not smaller. And New York House democrat Jamaal Bowman is fighting republican accusations that he was obstructing the houses work after setting off a fire alarm on saturday. Bowman is calling it, quote, an innocent mistake, saying that he was rushing to make a vote and didnt know it would activate the whole building. Capitol police are now investigating the fire alarm incident, so well watch that. Bmo in the bay area are bracing for a big financial hit. Iteam reporter stephanie sierra explains the projected impacts across the state. Millions of californians are bracing for a dreaded deadline student loan repayments. Now back on the schedule for emily machado. It means a lot of adrenaline and just kind of frantic scrolling, like trying to understand the Us Supreme Court ruled against the Biden Administration plan to forgive loans to over 40 million americans, including up to 20,000 of debt for those who received a pell grant offered to low income families. So because i come from a low income background, growing up, i was a pell grant recipient, so i was eligible potentially to receive up to 20,000 in cancellation as opposed to the standard 10,000 cancellation due to income threshold ends that were set, which dont take into account where youre living. Machado got nothing. And like many in her position, shes still left struggling with inflation and the overall high cost of living in the bay area. Its certainly overwhelming coming out of college to a large pile of money that that needs to be taken care of. Im just trying to get a better grasp on kind of what what i need to do. According to the Us Department of education, borrowers should log in to their federal student aid website to update any information and find out who your loan servicer is to explore repayment options. These include autopay or income driven payment plans. Economist bryce gill says the impact is really dependent on income. So, for example, you look at the average payment that people are going to have to make, its about 300 for people with undergraduate degree goes up to about 500 on average a month for someone with a graduate degree. But the Biden Administration has passed whats called the save plan. The save plan is an income driven repayment plan. The white house says borrowers who make more than 15 per hour and enroll are expected to save about 1,000 more per year, compared to other payment plans, according to the most recent report compiled by the Public Policy institute of california. As of 2020, us borrowers hold about 1. 6 trillion in federal student loan debt, and millions of californians are responsible for more than 142 billion of it. But the program is rolling out some help. Gill explains. Its the on ramp transition period which protects your credit if you have missed or late payments. Just remember its temporary, so youre not going to be able to, lets say, five years from now, keep missing payments. Right . And have your credit score not be impacted. So this is sort of a short term bridge, short term help for a long term check definitely will need to be a little bit more mindful of spending. Stephanie sierra, abc seven news.
