Happened just weeks apart. Good evening. Thank you for joining us. Im dan ashley martinez. Police confirmed to us tonight that the suspect charged in the vallejo case, fred kane, the third, is now a person of interest in the martinez murder case as well. Abc seven News Reporter j. R stone is in the newsroom with new information that goes back all the way back to 1987. It certainly does. Dan on the same day that authorities brought suspected murderer fred kane, the third back to california from oregon where he was arrested. He was named a person of interest by another Law Enforcement agency, tsay. In another case. Its now been more than 36 years since nine year old eric coy was killed after leaving to go to his cousin and best friends house in martinez , california. The boy was brutally murdered just minutes after leaving his house, stabbed with a blunt object for the last two days. That play site has been a grim searching zone for police. No one was ever convicted of the killing, but now less than a week after prosecutors say they used dna to link this man, fred kane, the third to the murder of six year old Jeremy Stoner in vallejo back in 1987. In a authorities in martinez are taking notice. Theyre working with the Solano County District Attorneys Office to learn more about kane and if he could also be linked to coys murder. Is he an official suspect in the case right now . Hes a person of interest, lieutenant Patrick Salomon has spent the last 11 years working coys case. I left his house on Warren Street and took a shortcut through the martinez junior high within about 15 minutes, his body was found on the grounds of the junior high. I found that eric coy had suffered multiple stab wounds. Kanes family members, who i believe kane lived innezt at that time. But say he did live in the nearby east bay town of pacheco. In coys case, there was a suspect sketch, but it never amounted to anything. The boys body was found near this bridge that is no longer even there today, as the area is now overgrown with ivy. As for the case going forward, im always optimistic. And, you know, maybe some some dna or some sort of biological evidence will exist in the future to reanalyze. But i can tell you, were not going to stop investigating in this case. The vallejo suspect and martinez person of interest will face a judge for the first time in Solano County tomorrow at 130 in the afternoon. I have been in contact with several of kanes family members tonight. Right. And they are not at all coming to his defense. Dan now back to you. Okay. J. R thanks very much. And if you believe you have information to help provide in this martinez case, let me show you this. As you look at the screen here, this is the tip line for the Martinez Police department. If you know anything about the circumstance surrounding the killing, you can remain anonymous when you call. Well, now to your voice and your vote. The second republican president ial debate took place tonight, but the frontrunner was missing once again, former President Donald Trump was in detroit, opting to meet with striking autoworkers instead. Reporter josh haskell from our sister station in los angeles is there for the debate tonight at the Ronald Reagan president ial library in simi valley. It was a chaotic debate tonight at the Reagan Library where the frontrunner, donald trump, was absent again and a target also the other candidates didnt hesitate going after each other. This is infuriating because tiktok is one of the most dangerous social media apps that we could have. And what youve got, i honestly every time i hear you, i feel a little bit dumber for what you say because i cant believe that here a tiktok situation. What theyre doing is 150 Million People are on tiktok. That means they can get your contacts, they can get your financial information, they can get your emails. Former South Carolina governor nikki haley going after Vivek Ramaswami on the use of tiktok to connect with younger voters. Also going after South Carolina senator tim scott, who was more aggressive in debate number two. I have been discriminated against, but america is not a racist country, never, ever doubt who we are. We are the greatest country on gods green earth. Former President Donald Trump was in battleground michigan on wednesday trying to win over blue collar voters, although his opponents on the stage in simi valley blamed President Biden for the strike. They blamed President Trump for increasing our national debt. You know who else is missing in action when donald trump is missing in action . He should be on this stage tonight. He owes it to you to defend his record. Youre not here tonight because youre afraid of being on this stage and defending your record. Youre ducking these things. And let me tell you whats going to happen. You keep doing that. No one up here is going to call you donald trump anymore. Were going to call you donald duck. And on the topic of School Districts notifying parents about whether a student identifies as trans gender, some of the candidates had this to say. Were going to stand up for the rights of parents and were going to pass a federal ban on transgender chemical or surgical surgery. Trans genderism, especially in kids, is a Mental Health disorder for serving in the role as surrogate for president joe biden. California governor gavin newsom was also in simi valley, highlighting bidens achievements. Its jv, its the xfl. Its a Vice President ial debate. Maybe the real race is around the corner, and its existential. And its time for moral clarity and to understand fundamentally what the stakes are. You got a guy that lost the election and tried to wreck this country and donald trump and youve got joe biden thats put us on the path to prosper. Pretty within real economic plan. The third Republican Debate will take place on november 8th in miami, and it will be harder for candidates to qualify for because the rnc has raised fund raising and polling thresholds in simi valley. Josh haskell, abc seven news. The future of Artificial Intelligence took center stage in San Francisco today as President Biden wrapped up his quick trip to the bay area. He met with his council of advisors on science and technology, which includes officials from microsoft and google. The president is talking with tech experts about harnessing the power of ai while also protecting people from the risks. Ai is a potential to transform research. Thanks to our administrations 15 American Technology companies have already begun to implement voluntary commitments to help ensure that Ai Technology is safe, secure and trustworthy before its released to the public. President biden also says he plans to issue an executive order this fall to help ensure the development of ai is responsible. He did not elaborate on specifics tonight. The president attended to Campaign Fundraisers in town before leaving for arizona. All right. Lets get you ready for thursday and what you can expect from the weather. A Hebrew School in sonoma is opening up its doors to nonjewish students for the first time ever. This Hebrew School meets once a week outside of regular school and opening enrollment is an effort to combat rising antisemitism. Abc seven News Reporter tim johns sat down in the class today and has the story. What do i have here in front of me . A torah. Very good. For the past ten years, you could find rabbi steve finley teaching Hebrew School at his small jewish congregation in in the city of sonoma. Well im going to the second little sukkah here. I come. But this year, the once a week classes are a little different. For the first time ever, the group has opened up to nonjewish students in a bid to help combat antisemitism. The idea was that the more kids that come and study with us and learn our ways, experience our tradition and get to know us on a personal level, what is this rabbi . Its called the lulav. This years group of kids includes 11 jewish students and two nonjews during class, they learned everything from teachings of the torah to ancient jewish holidays and traditions. The inclusion of new students has been warmly received. We get to learn about other cultures and like its just inviting kids in who arent the same culture as us and its a new experience and its fun. Those types of feelings are exactly what rabbi finley wants to create. He says while jews have faced persecution for centuries, in recent times, hes gotten more worried. He tells me his congregation regularly has Armed Security at their gatherings just to ensure peace of mind. According to the antidefamation league, antisemitic incidents are rising rampantly not just across the us, but also right here in northern california. There were 166 incidents in northern california, and that was up to him, 137 year over year. That includes incidents as recently as one month ago in marin county. Despite that reality, the rabbi says the challenges also give him strength, strength to keep going, strength to spread love and strength, to honor his ancestors. Were an ethnicity and were a culture and were a nation. Were a tribe. Were a people or a religion. And were not going to drop the baton on, you know, on our watch because as far as hes concerned, the work is only just beginning. Its a start. And we hope to, you know, with the success of these two kids, we hope to actually expand. I got my love and my in sonoma. Tim johns, abc seven news. Well, building a better bay area is something that motivates us every single day here at abc7. And tonight were finding some breakthroughs in that mission with local stories that really matter. Our first is a new care court in San Francisco to get help for those struggling with Mental Health. The Program Begins next week after a new law passed last year made it possible the so called care act expands the range of people who can file a petition for someone to get Mental Health help. San francisco Public Health Officials Say the program will help them tackle the citys Mental Health crisis with potentially thousands on the streets qualifying to receive them and care court allows for a wide range of petitioners, including first responders, family members. Somebody who lives with an individual whos worried about them. And those can get filed directly with the court. The city currently has about 2500 Mental Health treatment beds and plans to add more to help meet the need. Our next abc7 building a better bay area breakthrough takes you to the south bay where some major progress is being made in the rebuilding of the anderson dam. The dam and its reservoir are near morgan hill are one of the largest sources of water for Santa Clara County so far. Valley water contractors have excavated more than 800ft. Of the 1700 foot tunnel next to anderson dam valley. Water says the tunnel will let them release more water faster and safer during major storms or emergencies. A lot of people dont think about what goes into delivering safe, clean water to their households, but there is a lot and this is, you know, our number one priority right now. Officials say work is on track to finish the tunnel on time and move into a seismic retrofit project. That project is set to start in 2025 and last for seven years. All right. Our final abc seven building a better bay area breakthrough led us to find some real help to get more people to advance through higher education. Abc seven news south bay reporter Lauren Martinez takes it from here. Im still me, but with the phd. Okay. You heard it here first. First generation latina College Graduates and now Educators Want to help guide students to a higher degree at San Jose State University wednesday, they shared their new book, the latinx guide to graduate school the book came to be because they saw a huge need. We were able to see through that experience that there were so many other students who had a similar set of questions as were trying to make their way through with a similar set of struggles and challenges. According to the 2019 2020, data from the National Center for education statistics, 7. 8 of all doctoral degrees were earned by latinos, compared to 57 by white students. Theres a plethora of struggles that are faced by our community and we need visionary , passionate, engaged scholars to be able to take up that work. Former san jose state students also now educators, shared their experiences. As you realize, as you were in grad school, as you continue to go up, the communities and circles get smaller. We tend to come from schools that are underresourced, underfunded. And so then we get to college and university cities, and youre sitting in classrooms with students that had the complete opposite experience. The discussion showed undergrad and graduate students that there is a path and community out there for them and lets other people know that one, that im not crazy, right . Im not im not experiencing something thats unique to me, but its something that other people have have experience at and also overcome. The book is meant to be a resource for students and faculty. What are ways, again, that as educators, as advisors, we can shift up our policies, our practices in the classroom and outside of the classroom room to make this pathway more equitable . And this is a good thing to do, not only for latinx student success, which are rising demographic, but really for the success of all students in san jose. Lauren martinez, abc seven news. New at 11 the return of fall means the return of pumpkin patches and this years unusually wet winter has given pumpkin patches massive gourds. Weve never had anything quite this big. In fact, behind us, weve actually removed our entire parking lot to make more room for more pumpkins. So its really in the last few years has grown exponentially, which is great. People in californias agricultural community, including nash ranch in redding , are seeing a big difference in their crops. This year versus the drought years. Just a short time ago.
