final .com backslash fliers get it all in one trip and that's it. only at smart and final tonight, breaking news as we come on the air. and the former president will be weighed. aaron katersky in atlanta. the tragedy for an nfl star, losing his father in a massive house explosion in north carolina. it comes just a couple of years after losing his mother to breast cancer. tonight, there is news coming in of a deadly school bus accident on the first day of school. one child killed, several other children seriously hurt in this crash. tonight, the wife and mother shot and killed because she had a pride flag outside her clothing store. news this evening on the alleged gunman, and what they found, what he had posted online. tonight, the video from inside that 98-year-old's home. she was the co-owner of the newspaper raided. so was her home. her family says she died a day later from the stress. and what she can be heard saying to authorities during that raid of her home. the harrowing rescue tonight. eight people, six of them children, trapped in a cable car for hours. 600 feet above the ground. a cable snapping. and america strong tonight. the firefighters, so many of them lost their own homes while fighting the fires on maui. what's been done tonight, and you have to see what's now on the way. good evening and it's great to have you with us here on a tuesday night. and we do begin tonight with the thousands without power. the highways under water. tropical storm harold slamming into texas. the first named storm of the atlantic hurricane season to make landfall in the u.s. and it comes amid a record number of named storms already in 39 hours. they're in the pipeline. tonight, tropical storm harold, after slamming ashore on padre island, texas, now moving quickly inland. flood warnings and watches, damaging winds and blinding rain. accuweather images tonight of the fast-moving storm blowing across south texas. up to a half foot of rain in some places. and tonight here, the damage from the winds. roads flooded. and so many families now in the dark. rob marciano standing by to time this out tonight. but first, mireya villarreal leading as off. she's in corpus christi, texas, tonight. >> reporter: tonight, tropical storm harold slamming ashore, making landfall at around 10:00 a.m. on padre island, texas. the storm quickly gaining strength as it bore down on the gulf coast. harold made landfall south of here. so we're getting the sloppy side of the storm. powerful winds are bringing the storm surge closer to land, and we're getting about two inches of rain every hour. accuweather storm chaser mike scantlin in kenedy county. >> sustained winds of about 45 miles per hour. i've had gusts up to 70 miles per hour along this highway for the last five or ten minutes. but for a tropical storm, this is packing quite a punch. dumping a lot of rain into areas that need the rain really bad. >> reporter: streets submerged. some areas could see half a foot of rain. harold's winds so powerful, it knocked out electricity for thousands of residents. david, the energy of the storm is now hundreds of miles from where we are right now, but you can still see the lingering effects right behind me. big winds still happening here in corpus christi, and rough surf. but harold is on the move, and powerful, tracking fast, now heading to west texas, where there is a flood watch in effect through tomorrow. david? >> david: mireya villarreal leading us off. mireya, thank you. let's get right to senior meteorologist rob marciano, tracking the current storm, of course. we mentioned the several named storms in the pipeline. and also, 100 million americans, more than 100 million, facing potentially record-breaking heat all over again. but first, rob, i know you're tracking harold's path. what are you watching tonight? >> reporter: well, just how fast it's moving. much like hilary, this thing really came onshore quickly. the center over laredo right now. been getting all sorts of rainfall today, they'll take it, but they're dealing with some flooding, as well. del rio, you're next, and then eventually el paso. as you mentioned, this was the fourth named storm to develop in just 39 hours. here are the other players, including others in the atlantic. but franklin will hit hispaniola and puerto rico with some rain. this heat, this is expansive. all the way from minneapolis to new orleans. and everywhere in between, excessive heat warnings. not just the heat, but you layer in that humidity and you've got heat indices up over 110, 114 in some spots. so, millions of americans in the danger seat, not just tomorrow, but likely into thursday, as well. david? >> david: rob marciano with us tonight, as well. rob, thank you. and of course, all of this comes after the other tropical storm slammed california and parts of the west. tonight here, the rescues. families trapped in mud. the babies rescued from the nicu. the generators failing. and take a look at this. there are new images tonight of a hard landing at the airport in santa ana, right in the middle of the storm. the sparks seen right through the window on that plane. meantime, communities in the san bernardino mountains cut off by mudslides. people still need help tonight. at least one woman is still missing. and that dramatic evacuation from a hospital in l.a. those babies from the neonatal unit carefully brought out. abc's matt rivers now from california. >> reporter: tonight, north of los angeles, first responders and heavy equipment digging through mud and debris left behind in hilary's wake. authorities still searching for at least one woman who was reportedly swept away in her trailer home. here in the san bernardino mountains, there used to be a bridge right here above the santa ana river, but as you can tell, it's gone, completely blown out by flash flooding, effectively cutting off the community on the other side. in seven oaks, choppers airlifting a woman with a leg injury to the hospital. but even though they could be stuck for days, some residents say they don't want to evacuate. >> they have limited food and water supplies. so, today, we are really trying to impress upon those residents, the time to leave is now. >> reporter: in los angeles, first responders racing to evacuate nicu babies, and hundreds of other patients at white memorial hospital, after the generators powering it failed. firefighters had to carry patients, some on ventilators, down multiple flights of stairs. and in the midst of it all, a minor miracle. >> there was one baby born after the emergency generator went out, and what they ended up doing was putting together a whole bunch of flashlights and shining them up at the ceiling and illuminating the room. >> reporter: and new video shows sparks flying as an alaska airlines plane made a terrifying hard landing at john wayne airport on sunday, just as hilary was bearing down. the plane unable to make it to the gate. thankfully, no one was hurt. and david, it hasn't rained here in the san bernardino mountains for well over a day now, but you can see just how much debris remains in the road here. that section of the road to my right is still collapsed. the repairs as a result of this historic storm are going to take days, if not weeks, if not months. david? >> david: yeah, the incredible destruction left behind. matt rivers live there tonight. matt, thank you. next here this evening, to former president trump, who is now preparing to surrender to authorities in fulton county, georgia. trump says he'll be arrested on thursday. tonight here, news on a potential mug shot and fingerprinting, and the former president will be weighed in at the jail. abc's senior investigative reporter aaron katersky in atlanta tonight. >> reporter: tonight, donald trump announcing he's preparing to surrender, posting on social media, "can you believe it? i'll be going to atlanta, georgia, on thursday, to be arrested." the former president expected to be fingerprinted and have his mugshot taken before he's released on a $200,000 bond, twice as big as the bond of any of his co-defendants so far. he'll have to put up 10% before he's let out. today, some of trump's 18 alleged co-conspirators beginning to arrive at the fulton county jail to turn themselves in, including lawyer john eastman, allegedly the architect of a criminal scheme to send fake electors to washington to block joe biden from being certified the winner and keep trump in power. after he was booked, eastman denying he did anything wrong, still pushing lies about the 2020 election. >> do you still think the election was stolen? >> absolutely. >> absolutely. >> reporter: as a condition of release, eastman and the others agreed to "perform no act to intimidate" any witness or co-defendant "or to otherwise obstruct the administration of justice." trump has an extra condition. he cannot make threats against potential witnesses, including posts on social media. >> david: so, let's bring in aaron katersky tonight, live in atlanta. aaron, president trump acknowledging he's headed to the fulton county jail on thursday to, in his words, be arrested. walk us through what we can expect to see involving the former president. >> reporter: as soon as he lands here in atlanta on thursday, the former president is expected to come directly to the jail. deputies will be waiting to record his height and weight and other vitals. they'll also fingerprint him and take his mug shot, and david, that will be the first time such an image of trump has ever been taken. >> david: aaron, stick with us here, because we do have breaking news from our team. there's another major headline at this hour from abc news. this one in special counsel jack smith's investigation into the alleged mishandling of classified documents at mar-a-lago. of course, we remember jack smith's indictment referring to a trump employee number four at mar-a-lago. this was the i.t. director, who questioned whether he had the right to erase the surveillance. he wouldn't do it. and tonight, our team now learning that he is now formally cooperating with federal prosecutors? >> reporter: he is, david. yuscil taveras is that i.t. worker, and is the first witness known to enter into a cooperation agreement in any of the trump-related criminal cases. he would be expected to provide testimony against the former president, but sources told abc news, information that taveras has already provided led the special counsel jack smith to bring new charges against trump, alleging that he tried to have security footage at mar-a-lago destroyed. david? >> david: aaron katersky on both stories tonight, and our team. our thanks to you all. now, to the tragedy for an nfl star, losing his father in a massive house explosion in north carolina. tennessee titans cornerback caleb farley losing his father, and we have learned it comes just a couple of years after losing his mother to breast cancer. here's abc's trevor ault tonight. >> reporter: tonight, authorities say a possible gas leak caused a massive explosion, decimating this north carolina mansion owned by nfl player caleb farley, killing his own father. >> it almost looks like an atom bomb was dropped on it. >> reporter: officials say the explosion happened around midnight, leveling essentially every part of the 6,300-square foot home. >> for as large a house that was, that gas was there for awhile, and finally found its way to an ignition source and caused the explosion. >> reporter: the blast, authorities say, killed farley's 61-year-old father, robert. and a 25-year-old family friend was also injured. >> when i found out someone did walk out of it, i was -- i was amazed. >> it looked like armageddon. the house is basically pulverized, vaporized. >> reporter: caleb farley arriving on the scene this morning, sitting among the wreckage. officials say the nfl player wasn't there at the time of the explosion. his father's death comes just five years after farley lost his mother to breast cancer. farley's teammates and coaches with the tennessee titans now rallying around him. >> we got to focus on caleb and his family, and what we can do to support them and be here for them. >> reporter: and david, this investigation is still ongoing, but we're told there's no sign of any criminal activity. authorities believe this was likely an accident in the house that caleb farley bought for his father. david? >> david: just an awful story. trevor ault tonight with us. trevor, thank you. there is also news coming in tonight of a deadly school bus accident on the first day of school. one child killed. several other children hurt in ohio. here's abc's alex perez now. >> reporter: tonight, a terrifying, tragic start to the first day of elementary school for dozens of students on a school bus just outside dayton, ohio. >> report of an auto accident, school bus in a ditch, on its top, children on the bus. >> reporter: authorities say around 8:16 a.m., a minivan veered into the lane of an oncoming northwestern local schools bus, carrying 52 students. the bus driver attempting to avoid that minivan, but the two colliding. >> after contact, the school bus traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned. >> we got massive injuries. massive injuries. >> reporter: one student was ejected from the bus, dying at the scene. 23 other children taken to the hospital, one of them in serious condition. >> i just saw hundreds, it seemed like hundreds of cops and people just in unmarked cars, running with tourniquets, pulling them out of their bags and running. it kind of shook me up just thinking of your little kids. >> reporter: and david, ohio, like most states, does not require seat belts on school buses. the crash is under investigation. david? >> david: alex perez tonight. thank you, alex. tonight, police have now identified the suspect in the killing of a beloved clothing store owner, a wife and mother. they say the killing was sparked by a dispute over the pride flag she had outside her business. and tonight, what california authorities say they found online by that suspect. here's abc's zohreen shah. >> reporter: tonight, we're learning more about the suspect, travis ikeguchi, who deputies say killed beloved store owner, wife, mother, and lgbtq+ advocate laura ann carleton. authorities say ikeguchi's social media was full of hate-filled posts, including a picture of a burning pride flag, calling same-sex marriage immoral, messages that spoke favorably about shooting police officers, and anti-semitic rhetoric. according to officials, on friday, the 27-year-old ripped off a pride flag hanging in front of carleton's lake arrowhead store and yelled homophobic slurs at her. ikeguchi allegedly killing the mother of nine after she confronted him, then taking off on foot. >> when the twin peaks deputies tried to apprehend the suspect, ikeguchi shot at the deputies, striking multiple sheriff's patrol vehicles. deputies returned fire and struck the suspect. >> reporter: ikeguchi pronounced dead at the scene. outside both carleton's stores, growing memorials. >> it's shock, it's outrage, it's anger. we have to -- we have to be together nationally against what we're facing. >> reporter: and david, so many people that we spoke to here at her lake arrowhead store speaking out about love and acceptance. authorities believe ikeguchi acted alone, but they say they are investigating if he was tied to a larger hate group. david?
