great to start another week with all of you at home. we are following two major weather systems tonight. the historic storms slamming the west. drivers losing control, also mudslides trapping cars. the rescues. then the earthquake hitting california in the middle of it. we're also following the threat in the gulf tonight. a tropical storm set to hit the u.s. tomorrow. first tonight, the stunning images from california. take a look. this tropical storm arriving with torrential rain and fierce winds. death valley saw its wettest 24 hours ever. palm springs, a year's worth of rain in a day. in thousand palms, heavy rain and rushing water swamping this truck and closing that road. rocks from a mudslide pouring down from a hill in forest falls. part of the road washed away in santa clarita. north of los angeles, a driver losing control, this is interstate 5 right here. narrowly escaping an accident. so many scenes like this one. and in cathedral city, near palm springs, this neighborhood buried in mud. the cars trapped. bull douzers brought in to career the streets. and then the magnitude 5.1 earthquake. the epicenter north of los angeles. flooding alerts from california to idaho. and in the gulf, that other major system we're watching, set to hit tomorrow. senior meteorologist rob marciano leading us off tonight near palm springs. >> reporter: tonight, mudslides, swamped vehicles, water rescues, as hilary dumps historic rain on parts of california in the last 24 hours. car after car losing control on interstate 5 north of los angeles, hydroplaning on the slick roadway. near palm springs, flood waters inundating communities. vehicles stranded. rescue crews bringing out people covered in mud. among those trapped, luis are mere his and his family. >> called 911 around 30 times, but you know, we just kept getting the same answers. hold on, don't be scared. like, okay. it was hard. >> reporter: at least a dozen people in an assisted living facility nearly all the low-lying areas in the desert valley are filled with water and mud, including the interstate. this is the 10 which has been shut down or crawling since the heaviest rains came in yesterday. in the san bernardino mountains, some 700 people in forest falls forced to shelter in place until crews could remove boulders and mud blocking roads. watch as this massive mudslide approaches a fire station there sunday, firefighters scrambling for safety. and this is what it looks like from above today. in san diego, hilary taking out huge trees, as our matt rivers shows us. >> two to three inches of rain around san diego meant saturated ground, which meant decades-old trees like this one toppling over. this one hitting that house there. thankfully no injuries. now workers in the process of removing it. >> reporter: our l.a. station k abc broadcasting live when the unthinkable happened -- an earthquake. >> chief, i'm really sorry to interrupt you right now. our studio is shaking right now, so not only are we dealing with a tropical storm, but it appears we are now dealing with an earthquake. >> reporter: the magnitude 5.1 tremor sending bottles flying off the shelves at this bar in ventura. no reports of major damage from the quake. tropical storm hilary made landfall in mexico sunday, killing at least two. the system now on the move, putting parts of eight western states on alert for more flooding and wind. >> david: let's get right to rob marciano, in california tonight, tracking all of this. of course, this new storm set to hit the gulf, it could hit as early as tomorrow. but of course, rob, this system that slammed the west is also still on the move tonight. >> reporter: it is, and we still have a lot of mud here. this is the road where the front loaders brought those seniors to safety. it's going to take days for all the streets to be passable from all this mud. hilary still not a storm, but the impacts still very, very strong. heavy rain and nevada, in through parts of idaho falls, could see 50, 60-mile-per-hour winds tonight. then, winding down tomorrow. but the atlantic is winding up. we have three named storms right now. two more likely to be named. one in the gulf of mexico that is on the move towards texas. forecast to hit there during the day tomorrow, as a tropical storm. landfall somewhere in the morning hours with moderate impacts. certainly a very busy time of year. david? >> david: watching the gulf tomorrow, and that incredible scene there with the mud tonight. rob marciano, live in california. rob, thank you. now, the remnants from this tropical storm that hit the west, a double-edged sword for the wildfires burning in washington state. it could bring showers, but also wind and lightning. the gray fire and the oregon road fire broke out on friday. tonight, they are just 10% contained now. nearly the entire city of medical lake near spokane has been evacuated. some returning to find little left. the fires have destroyed more than 200 homes and buildings and have killed at least two people there. we turn now to the breaking headline involving former president trump tonight. he has five days left to surrender at that jail in fulton county, georgia. tonight, what we have learned about the negotiations for sure rebd surrender. here's jonathan karl. >> reporter: with five days left to show up in georgia, donald trump's lawyers arrived at the fulton county courthouse today to negotiate the terms of his surrender. and several hours later, they had a deal. trump is expected to report to the county jail, where he will be fingerprinted and have his mugshot taken. then the former president will be released on $200,000 bond. but his freedom comes with conditions. trump can make "no direct or indirect threat" towards any potential witnesses, including his 18 alleged co-conspirators. and that includes "posts on social media or reposts of posts made by another individual." the agreement is signed by trump's lawyers, a judge, and the fulton county d.a., fani willis, who is prosecuting the former president for allegedly leading a criminal conspiracy to overturn the election in georgia. it all comes as the republican presidential candidates prepare for their first debate on wednesday. but trump now says he won't be on that stage. the former president posting that he's, quote, leading the field by legendary numbers, adding, "the public knows who i am and what a successful presidency i had. i will therefore not be doing the debates." while trump is forbidden as a condition of his bail from making any direct or indirect threats against any of the witnesses, the big question is, what happens if he violates that? if he makes any threats? in a typical case, a typical defendant would be violating terms of release, would be put in jail, but of course, david, donald trump is not a typical defendant, and this is not a typical case. >> david: jon, thank you. we're going to turn to the dramatic moment in court. the ohio teen convicted of murdering her boyfriend and friend by deliberately slamming her car into a brick wall at 100 miles an hour. judge called her court. here's abc's alex perez. >> reporter: tonight, an ohio teen driver sentenced to life, convicted of barreling down a road, killing her boyfriend and their friend. mackenzie shirilla apologizing in court. >> i wish i could take all of your pain away, and i'm so sorry. >> reporter: the fatal crash back in the early morning hours of july 2022. prosecutors say shirilla, then 17 years old, was behind the wheel. surveillance video capturing the vehicle speeding down the street at more than 100 miles an hour. the car jumping the curb and slamming into a business. the judge calling her "literal hell on wheels." >> she had a mission and she executed it with precision. the mission was death. >> reporter: 20-year-old c russo and 19-year-old davion flanagan found dead at the scene. >> i lost three children in that crash. not a minute goes by each day that i don't think about my son. >> reporter: the judge convicted her of multiple counts of murder, felonious assault, aggravated vehicular homicide and count of drug possession. david? >> david: alex perez tonight, thank you. we turn now to the urgent search for a member of the proud boys tonight, convicted for his role on january 6th. under house arrest, authorities believed he was a threat. mow he's missing. here's our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas. >> reporter: tonight, the fbi searching for a proud boy who was convicted of attacking police on january 6th in an attempt to block joe biden from becoming president. prosecutors had recommended 14 years in prison for christopher john worrell for assaulting and pepper spraying officers as they struggled to defend the capitol that horrible day. the moment captured in this closeup photograph that doj included in his indictment. tonight, sources telling abc news worrell, who was convicted of seven charges, has vanished, disappearing last thursday, just one day before his scheduled sentencing in a washington, d.c. court. the 52-year-old had been under house arrest in naples, florida, after a judge sided with worrell's complaint about not getting proper medical treatment at a d.c.-area jail. but tonight, authorities are concerned about potential violence, given his criminal history and prior access to weapons. in 2009, he was arrested for impersonating a police officer, using a badge to pull over and harass a female driver. police discovering a firearm, knives, and two pair of handcuffs in his vehicle. worrell's attorney did not respond to our calls today. he's not been seen since disappearing from his home in florida, and tonight, the fbi's asking for the say was a dispute over the pride flag she had outside her california business. authorities are concerned over the rhetoric in this country. here's abc's kayna whitworth. >> reporter: tonight, authorities investigating the death of a beloved california store owner and mother of nine who was shot and killed over what police say was a dispute over a pride flag. >> gunshot victim. medic ambulance 91. >> reporter: 66-year-old laura ann carleton was fatally shot friday evening at her clothing store near lake arrowhead. the san bernardino county sheriff's department says the suspect "made several disparaging remarks about a rainbow flag that stood outside the store before shooting carleton." the male suspect, who has not been identified, then fleeing on foot. authorities saying they located the armed suspect about a mile away. "a lethal force encounter occurred and the suspect was pronounced deceased." a recent report by the glaad says they've seen a rise in rhetoric targeting the lgbtq+ community, coinciding with more than 300 incidents of harassment and assault in a recent ten-month period. friends writing that when someone took down her flag or vandalized it, she'd put up another one. >> she did tend to be a fierce defender and ally and supporter of the lgbt community. she was very proud of her friends and her flag and people living the way that they can authentically live. >> reporter: there is also a growing memorial at her store location here in studio city. it's called mag pie, and the sign on the door reads, we have lost our momma bird. david, even the governor weighing in, calling her murder absolutely horrific. >> david: just awful tonight. kayna, thank you. president biden and first lady dr. jill biden arriving on maui, just a short time ago. and tonight, right here, the video just now emerging. firefighters driving through that inferno, only to then have their hoses run dry. abc's mola lenghi on maui tonight. >> yeah, you got to go! >> reporter: tonight, we're seeing new harrowing footage showing what firefighters were up against as they raced to battle the flames ripping through lahaina. >> our visibility is really limited right now. >> reporter: this fire truck driving through the inferno, surrounded by blinding smoke. >> all units, all units, we've got to get out of this fire. >> reporter: fierce winds whipping the flames through town. the fire chief telling us his crews didn't back down, but their hoses ran dry. >> they need water. that resource is so precious to us. so when they were running out, they were so disheartened. >> reporter: nearly two weeks after the fire claimed at least 114 lives, officials say 850 people are still unaccounted for. late today, president biden and the first lady touching down on maui, where they boarded a chopper for their first look at the devastation left behind from the country's deadliest wildfire. the president set to meet with first responders and survivors. and as the state investigates the response to the fires, officials warn there could be many children among the dead. today is the first day of school for maui prep, the only school still open in west maui, welcoming over 100 new students displaced or impacted by the fire. >> i'm so glad you're okay. >> yeah, i'm okay. >> i was so worried about you. >> reporter: michelle nguyen lost her home and her parents' business. eight members of the family raced to the water to escape the flames. >> there was nowhere to go, so, we just had to be in the water for like five hours straight. >> reporter: you were just treading water for five hours straight?
