potential mass shooting averted outside a jewish school in memphis. also the, american nurse and her child believed kidnapped tonight in haiti. but we do begin tonight with the stunning moment in court, the idaho mother convicted of killing her own children. tonight, sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. lori vallow day bell in court today expressing no remorse. and what she then said to that packed courtroom and to that judge. and how that judge responded. abc's chief national correspondent matt gutman leading us off tonight. >> reporter: today, lori vallow daybell was given one last chance to repent for the murders of her children and the plot to kill her husband's first wife, tammy daybell. but instead, in a bizarre rant, she claimed her three victims told her they are happy in heaven. >> i know for a fact that my children are happy and busy in the spirit world. >> reporter: in a final gut punch for the victims' families, the so-called doomsday cult mother today, unrepentant, denying her children were even murdered and claiming her daughter tylee has visited her as a spirit. >> she said to me, "stop worrying, mom, we are fine." she knows how i worry and how i miss her. >> reporter: and in what she called her communications with the spirit world, she says her 7-year-old son j.j. did the same. >> he said to me, "you didn't do anything wrong, mom. i love you. and i know you loved me every minute of my life." >> reporter: but the judge pointing to the depravity of the crimes. >> they were found dead, burned, mutilated, and dismembered, and buried like animals. >> reporter: prosecutors said lori and her married lover, chad daybell, a doomsday author, claimed the kids and chad's wife were zombies who had to be killed. they argued the couple, who married weeks after the murders on a beach in hawaii, were driven by greed. >> after you knew they were dead, you collected public funded assistance payments meant for them, and that was blood money you kept for yourself. >> reporter: lori vallow daybell forced to listen to the families whose lives she destroyed, including tammy daybell's. >> you are a liar, an adulteress, and a murderer. because of the choices you made, my family lost a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and daughter. she is irreplaceable. she was 1,000 times the woman you will even dream of being. >> reporter: and j.j.'s heartbroken grandmother. >> j.j. and tylee could have been with us, living happy lives. instead, she took all that away. all because she is a money hungry, power mongering monster. >> reporter: the judge with the final word, sentencing vallow daybell to spend the rest of her life in prison. >> you simply have no remorse for it, even sitting here today. >> reporter: and david, after listening to her statement, the judge calling out lori vallow, saying that she murdered her own children to remove them as obstacles so that she could gain financially. and he said she justified all of this by going down that bizarre religious rabbit hole from which he says she has yet to emerge. david? >> david: matt gutman leading us off. matt, thank you. we are also following that developing headline coming in from memphis at this hour. police say they have averted a potential mass shooting. the alarming scene playing out today at a jewish school. police responding to a call that a man armed with a gun had opened fire outside the school and was trying to get inside. then taking off in a truck. police in pursuit of that suspect and finding him. here's trevor ault. >> reporter: tonight, authorities in memphis say they believe they stopped a potential mass shooting. police saying they received a report just after noon of a white male armed with a handgun trying to force his way inside the margolin hebrew academy, the city's only orthodox jewish school. >> suspect tried to enter the building, armed with a gun, and when he couldn't gain entry, he fired shots outside the school. >> reporter: oscar gomez lives nearby. his three boys were home alone at the time. >> they throwed themselves on the floor so they would not get hit. i have never, never experienced anything like this. it's -- it's -- like i said, it's very concerning. >> reporter: the suspect allegedly taking off in a maroon ram pickup. and when officers on patrol spotted that vehicle, they say he stepped out with that handgun. the officers then opening fire. the suspect rushed to the hospital in critical condition. police now crediting the community and the school for quickly sharing an image of the suspect. >> today is a great example of very alert, vigilant officers trying to protect the city. i personally truly believe that we have avoided a tragedy. >> reporter: and david, state police are now investigating this as a possible hate crime, and memphis police stress this could have been far worse. the only person injured was the suspect. david? >> david: trevor ault tonight. trevor, thank you. now, to former president trump, and tonight, his property manager at mar-a-lago in court, accused of trying to help the former president delete surveillance video at mar-a-lago, until another employee halted the effort, allegedly saying, i don't think i have the right to do that. carlos de oliveira accused of helping to block the government's effort to retrieve those classified documents. they say he helped donald trump's aides scope out mar-a-lago for security cameras. in a tunnel with a flashlight, they say at one point allegedly telling mar-a-lago's i.t. specialist that the boss wants the surveillance server erased. and tonight here, the millions now being spent on trump's mounting legal defense. money that had come in as donations from voters. here's our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas. >> reporter: today, former president donald trump's new co-defendant, the property manager of his mar-a-lago golf course, surrounded by reporters heading into federal court in miami. >> carlos, anything you have to say? >> reporter: carlos de oliveira is accused of conspiring with trump's close aide walt nauta to try and delete security camera footage at the club, to prevent the fbi from seeing how they had allegedly hid classified documents from investigators. according to the indictment, de oliveira and nauta "walked with a flashlight through the tunnel where the storage room was located, and observed and pointed out surveillance cameras." prosecutors say de oliveira also asked mar-a-lago's i.t. director delete the server where the footage was stored, allegedly saying, "the boss wanted the server deleted." the i.t. director then allegedly pushing back, telling de oliveira "he would not know how to do that" and "he did not believe that he would have the rights to do that." de oliveira then insisting again, "the boss wanted the server deleted" and asking, "what are we going to do?" >> carlos, why not talk about what you know? >> sir, anything you'd like to say before court? >> reporter: de oliveira has worked at mar-a-lago for more than 20 years. he entered no plea today. he's still trying to find a lawyer to represent him. he was released on $100,000 bond, and told to surrender his expired passport. >> has your client been asked to testify against mr. trump? >> i'm not going to go into that. >> keep moving. >> reporter: this all comes as it appears special counsel jack smith is preparing to indict the former president again. in a separate case, this time involving his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. culminating in that riot on capitol hill on january 6th. trump today predicting the indictment could come any day now. the prosecutions now the driving issue of trump's own presidential campaign. >> i consider it actually a great badge of honor, i do. it's a great badge of honor, because i'm being indicted for you. >> reporter: and today, we're learning that trump used tens of millions of dollars in donations from his supporters to pay his legal bills. today, campaign finance filings poised to reveal that his pac spent more than $40 million to pay lawyers. the bills soaring so high that the pac had to request a refund of $60 million it sent to another group that supports trump. a spokeswoman for trump's top republican rival, ron desantis, seizing on those numbers, tweeting, "maga grandmas were scammed out of their social security checks in order to pay a billionaire's legal bills." >> david: let's bring in pierre thomas with us again tonight, he's live in washington. of course, this is the special counsel's mar-a-lago case. jack smith, we know, also investigating january 6th, not only the attack on the capitol, the planning, and this alleged scheme to send fake electors to try to keep trump in power. even though joe biden had won. i'm curious, pierre, what are your sources telling you tonight, when can we expect to hear whether jack smith will indict in that case, too, and, of course, this is something that trump has predicted himself, and soon. >> reporter: david, the grand jury investigating trump's role regarding january 6th will likely meet tomorrow. now, that's not a guarantee of indictment, but all signs point to the special counsel making its final decision one way or another soon. this is the end game, we're talking days, not weeks, david. >> david: all right, if something comes, you'll be right here with us. pierre, thank you. we're going to turn to the heat shifting tonight. 60 million americans on alert from texas to kansas to florida. let's get right to chief meteorologist ginger zee, back with us again tonight, tracking it all. hey, ginger. >> reporter: david, just as that desert southwest grip of unprecedented consecutive heat releases a bit, the core of that goes over east texas and louisiana. so, now it's all about austin, who will likely break their consecutive 100-plus record by this friday, 28 days. excessive heat warnings that go through new orleans. they'll feel like in some of those warnings up to 115 degrees with that heat index. so, that ridge sticks around all the way through the end of this week. little rock going to 111. part of the issue in the desert southwest was no monsoon. 130 days, fourth-longest stretch in phoenix without rain. that's starting to come to an end now. david? >> david: ginger zee with us on a monday night. ginger, thank you. there is growing concern tonight for a new hampshire woman, a nurse and her young daughter, reportedly kidnapped in haiti. here's abc's stephanie ramos now. >> reporter: tonight, concern is growing for an american nurse reportedly kidnapped with her child in haiti. alix dorsainvil from new hampshire had been working for a christian humanitarian aid organization. her husband, a director for that nonprofit, which confirmed alix was abducted with their child thursday morning near the capital of port-au-prince, saying they are working to secure their safe return. tonight, the state department tight-lipped on any ongoing efforts. >> we are in regular contact with the haitian authorities, and we'll continue to work with them and our u.s. government interagency partners. but because it's an ongoing law enforcement investigation, there's not any more detail i can offer. >> reporter: in this promotional video, alix is seen discussing her work in haiti. >> kids from the school will get permission from their teachers and they send them over and come to the nurse's office, and then i check them out. >> reporter: we've long reported on haiti's descent into chaos. violence escalating as gangs control almost 80% of port-au-prince. the abduction of alix and her child reportedly happened the same day the u.s. reissued a warning to americans in haiti, telling them to leave immediately, because of escalating violence. this comes as the u.s. says they will support a u.n.-backed multinational force led by kenya to help train and assist haitian police so they can restore normalcy in that country. david? >> david: all right, stephanie ramos tonight. stephanie, thank you. we turn now to the war in ukraine tonight. a deadly russian missile striking president zelenskyy's hometown. an apartment building hit. several dead. and russia making it clear, this is retaliation for drone strikes in moscow. ian pannell in kharkiv, ukraine, tonight, a city also under attack. >> reporter: tonight, the terrifying moment a russian missile strikes, captured in video circulating online. the target, president zelenskyy's hometown. but this wasn't a military site. it was innocent families at home when a missile tore a hole through their apartment block. once again, russia has struck a residential building in the heart of ukraine. at the moment, rescue workers are still going through the rubble pulling out survivors, but they're also in the process of pulling out the dead. but these operations can be deadly. at one point, debris falling, rescuers running for their lives. at least six people were killed in the attack, including a 10-year-old girl and at least 75 injured. the russian defense minister making it clear it is increasing attacks in response to this -- a dramatic drone strike in moscow sunday. video circulating online capturing the moment one exploded, hitting a building housing government offices. david, tonight, russia apparently responding. as you can hear, air raid sirens are currently going off, and in the last two hours, there have been drone strikes and explosions here in kharkiv. and right now, firefighters and rescue teams are once again out, dealing tonight, and capitol hill, where house republicans are investigating the president's son, hunter biden. today, the house oversight committee holding a closed door hearing with hunter biden's former business partner and friend, devin archer. let's bring in our senior investigative reporter aaron katersky, he's live in washington tonight. and aaron, hunter biden's former business partner was asked whether hunter biden had ever put his father, of course, the president, on a speakerphone with clients? >> reporter: he was asked that, david, and according to lawmakers who were in the room, devin archer told them that hunter biden would often put his father on the phone during business meetings, apparently to impress clients and associates. archer answered questions behind closed doors and testifying, according to one lawmaker in the room, that hunter biden was, quote, selling the illusion of access to his powerful father, and put him on speakerphone with different people some 20 times. during those calls, democratic congressman dan goldman said the two never spoke about business, instead, he said, archer described the calls involving president biden as casual, niceties, like the weather. and the white house has long said, david, that president biden and his son were never in business together. david? >> david: and to clarify, aaron, the calls involved joe biden when he was not president, this was before the presidency? >> reporter: that's right, well before the presidency, even after he was vice president, out of office, david. >> david: aaron katersky tonight. aaron, thank you. tonight, republicans vowing to continue to investigate hunter biden. the speaker of the house kevin mccarthy has floated the possibility of trying to impeach the president. our linsey davis
