>> zohreen, thank you. we move on to the horrifying incident at a hotel in ohio. guests who were using the pool were suddenly sickened. authorities believe a carbon monoxide leak is to blame. and now they are searching for the cause. several people had to be rushed to the hospital. one of the victims, a 2-year-old who fell unconscious. here's elwyn lopez. >> reporter: tonight, investigators racing to find out what caused that horrific carbon monoxide poisoning at a hotel outside columbus, ohio. >> looking into heaters, hvac systems, anything that could have developed, produced carbon monoxide. >> reporter: multiple people found unconscious in and around the indoor pool, including a toddler. >> now a report of three different children unconscious. >> reporter: the 2-year-old's family telling abc news her head started to bob, and she lost consciousness as her mother was holding her in the water. six children and five adults hospitalized. some victims reporting symptoms like dizziness and burning in their throats. hotel guests evacuated. including families in town for a wrestling tournament at an area high school. coach nicholas holmes says three members of his team were among those affected. >> this is impacting us seriously, and we just want to pray for these individuals and ask that everything be all right. >> reporter: the incident reminiscent of another case of carbon monoxide poisoning at an indoor hotel pool in michigan nearly five years ago. a 13-year-old boy was killed. six other children hurt. the cause there, a broken pool heater. >> we are concerned about carbon monoxide because it is the silent killer. it has no odor. it has no taste. it has no irritant properties. >> reporter: linsey, the city's fire chief says thankfully, no one died as a result of this. so far, at least four patients have been released. the hotel states they're cooperating with authorities. >> elwyn, thank you. we turn to the standoff between the kremlin and the west over ukraine. today, america's u.n. ambassador tells abc news a diplomatic solution is still possible. the security council is meeting tomorrow to consider the russian threat. while ukrainian officials are urging calm, ukrainian citizens are training and preparing for what may come next. here's stephanie ramos. >> reporter tonight, as ukrainian soldiers and the rest of the world wait and watch for russia's next move, the u.s. is still holding on to hope that it will be one of diplomacy. >> we're prepared to address our concerns, ukrainian concerns, and russian concerns at the diplomatic table. but it cannot be done on the battlefield. >> reporter: on monday, russia is set to face pressure from the united nations security council over this crisis. >> we're going to go in the room prepared to listen to them, but we're not going to be distracted by their propaganda. >> reporter: russia's positioning of more than 100,000 troops along the border with ukraine for months has prompted warnings from the u.s. that an invasion is imminent. u.s. senators saying they could be close to a bipartisan deal on sanctions against russia. >> i would describe it as though we are on the 1 yard line and hopefully we will be able to conclude successfully. >> reporter: ukrainian officials urging calm. >> we just cannot afford to panic. we're preparing for any options. everyone knows who the aggressor is. it's russia. >> reporter: russia's foreign minister demanding a legally binding guarantee that ukraine will not be allowed to join nato, but insisting they don't intend to invade. and now nato's secretary general saying they have no plans to deploy nato combat troops to ukraine if they are attacked. >> we do a lot of stuff to help ukraine strengthen its ability, capability to defend itself, but again ukraine is not a nato ally. >> stephanie joins us now from ukraine. the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. called monday's meeting one more opportunity to find a diplomatic way out for the russians. but moscow has signaled they intend to block the meeting? >> reporter: yes. russia has called the meeting a pr stunt. but the u.s. ambassador to the united nations says russia cannot block the meeting even if they try to because there is overwhelming support from the countries that make up the council to have this conversation. >> stephanie, thank you. tonight, u.s. officials condemning the biggest missile test by north korea since 2017. north korea claims these images of earth were taken from that projectile. it reportedly traveled five times higher than the international space station. it's the seventh launch by north korea this month, believed to be the most in any month since kim came to power ten years ago. now to the pandemic. and more signs the omicron surge is waning. some health care workers may now the number of covid patients is down 11% from last week. new infections dropping more than 32% over the past two weeks. but there were still more than 3.8 million new cases over the past seven days. and there is potentially promising news about vaccines for young children under the age of 5. here's ike ejiochi. >> reporter: tonight, some potentially encouraging news for parents eager to get their children younger than 5 vaccinated against covid. dr. scott gottlieb, a former fda chief and pfizer board member, predicting pfizer's pediatric shot for those 6 months to 4 years old could be submitted for authorization in weeks, if officials opt for a two-dose regimen versus three doses now under consideration. >> getting two doses into a child can provide baseline immunity that protects them from severe disease, from hospitalization. it could be out much sooner, perhaps as early as early march. >> reporter: while it may be welcome news for some parents, covid vaccines have stalled among eligible children 5 and up, with less than 40% fully vaccinated. still, the u.s. is showing signs of turning a corner on the omicron surge. >> i think we're collectively breathing a large sigh of relief right now. we've had over a week of a slow but steady decline. >> reporter: hospital admissions were down by more than 11% in the last week. yet in some pockets of the country, not everyone feeling the ease. >> it's just beyond our capacity to be able to care for all these patients. >> reporter: and tonight, as the w.h.o. marks the second anniversary of its declaring covid-19 a public health emergency of international concern, scientists have been tracking an omicron subvariant for weeks now, called ba.2, now detected in at least 29 states and accounting for less than 1% of all covid cases in the u.s. british researchers finding that vaccines appear to be just as effective against ba.2 as they are against the original ba.1 omicron. >> so far it looks like it's not more severe. >> reporter: the white house and fda are not confirming that timeline shared by dr. gottlieb with abc news. however, in december, pfizer said it would be testing three doses after the usual two shots did not appear to be as effective. >> ike, thank you. now to president biden weighing his pick to replace retiring supreme court justice stephen breyer. earlier this week, i spoke with south carolina congressman james clyburn about his choyce, judge j. michelle childs. >> i talked to the republican senators from south carolina. both tim scott and lindsey graham, they're very high on michelle childs. so i think both of them would vote for her. >> today, senator graham confirms there could be republican support. >> i can't think of a better person for president biden to consider for the supreme court than michelle childs. there's no affirmative action component if you pick her. she's highly qualified. >> potentially bipartisan support. let's bring in maryalice parks. a new poll about the president's pick came out today. that poll, not good news for the administration. >> reporter: no, 3 out of 4 americans think president biden should consider all possible nominees rather than only nominees who are black women, as the president has pledged. there is a partisan split there. almost all republicans think think the president should consider all options. whereas democrats were divided in our poll. but just last week, president biden said he thinks the idea of nominating the first black woman in american history to the highest court was long overdue. it was interesting today that senator graham spoke so highly of judge childs. we know she's one of more than a dozen candidates the president is considering. but bipartisan support could go a long way. >> certainly could. maryalice, thank you. now to the story that is lighting up the sports world and beyond. will he or won't he? could this be the end of an era? the discussion around tom brady's future is swirling after reports that he's planning to retire. but some close to him are pushing back. here's phil lipof. >> reporter: tonight, espn's adam schefter and jeff darlington, standing by their reporting that tom brady is about to hang up his helmet. >> the fact of the matter is, he is planning to retire after 22 seasons. >> reporter: the news setting off a flurry of confusion among fans. brady's own sports company tweeting this tribute, then taking it down. soon after, brady's agent releasing a statement saying the seven-time super bowl champ "would be the only person to express his plans with complete accuracy." the timing of brady's decision is up in the air, but darlington says the reasoning is relatively simple. >> tom brady is making the decision that he feels is best for him at this point in his life and that is leaving football behind. >> reporter: the 44-year-old's unrivaled career got off to a rough start. the scouting report before he was drafted in the sixth round called him skinny, lacking in physical stature and strength. that was then. now, widely considered to be the greatest quarterback of all time. the bucs' head coach says he has not been informed of any retirement. tom brady's father says he flat-out denies the report. as for the g.o.a.t. himself, nothing official. linsey? >> reporter: yes. russia has called the meeting a pr stunt. but the u.s. ambassador to the united nations says russia cannot block the meeting even if they try to because there is overwhelming support from the countries that make up the council to have this conversation. >> stephanie, thank you. tonight, u.s. officials condemning the biggest missile test by north korea since 2017. north korea claims these images of earth were taken from that projectile. it reportedly traveled five times higher than the international space station. it's the seventh launch by north korea this month, believed to be the most in any month since kim came to power ten years ago. now to the pandemic. and more signs the omicron surge is waning. some health care workers may now the number of covid patients is down 11% from last week. new infections dropping more than 32% over the past two weeks. but there were still more than 3.8 million new cases over the past seven days. and there is potentially promising news about vaccines for young children under the age of 5. here's ike ejiochi. >> reporter: tonight, some potentially encouraging news for parents eager to get their children younger than 5 vaccinated against covid. dr. scott gottlieb, a former fda chief and pfizer board member, predicting pfizer's pediatric shot for those 6 months to 4 years old could be submitted for authorization in weeks, if officials opt for a two-dose regimen versus three doses now under consideration. >> getting two doses into a child can provide baseline immunity that protects them from severe disease, from hospitalization. it could be out much sooner, perhaps as early as early march. >> reporter: while it may be welcome news for some parents, covid vaccines have stalled among eligible children 5 and up, with less than 40% fully vaccinated. still, the u.s. is showing signs of turning a corner on the omicron surge. >> i think we're collectively breathing a large sigh of relief right now. we've had over a week of a slow but steady decline. >> reporter: hospital admissions were down by more than 11% in the last week. yet in some pockets of the country, not everyone feeling the ease. >> it's just beyond our capacity to be able to care for all these patients. >> reporter: and tonight, as the w.h.o. marks the second anniversary of its declaring covid-19 a public health emergency of international concern, scientists have been tracking an omicron subvariant for weeks now, called ba.2, now detected in at least 29 states and accounting for less than 1% of all covid cases in the u.s. british researchers finding that vaccines appear to be just as effective against ba.2 as they are against the original ba.1 omicron. >> so far it looks like it's not more severe. >> reporter: the white house and fda are not confirming that timeline shared by dr. gottlieb with abc news. however, in december, pfizer said it would be testing three doses after the usual two shots did not appear to be as effective. >> ike, thank you. now to president biden weighing his pick to replace retiring supreme court justice stephen breyer. earlier this week, i spoke with south carolina congressman james clyburn about his choyce, judge j. michelle childs. >> i talked to the republican senators from south carolina. both tim scott and lindsey graham, they're very high on michelle childs. so i think both of them would vote for her. >> today, senator graham confirms there could be republican support. >> i can't think of a better person for president biden to consider for the supreme court than michelle childs. there's no affirmative action component if you pick her. she's highly qualified. >> potentially bipartisan support. let's bring in maryalice parks. a new poll about the president's pick came out today. that poll, not good news for the administration. >> reporter: no, 3 out of 4 americans think president biden should consider all possible nominees rather than only nominees who are black women, as the president has pledged. there is a partisan split there. almost all republicans think think the president should consider all options. whereas democrats were divided in our poll. but just last week, president biden said he thinks the idea of nominating the first black woman in american history to the highest court was long overdue. it was interesting today that senator graham spoke so highly of judge childs. we know she's one of more than a dozen candidates the president is considering. but bipartisan support could go a long way. >> certainly could. maryalice, thank you. now to the story that is lighting up the sports world and beyond. will he or won't he? could this be the end of an era? the discussion around tom brady's future is swirling after reports that he's planning to retire. but some close to him are pushing back. here's phil lipof. >> reporter: tonight, espn's adam schefter and jeff darlington, standing by their reporting that tom brady is about to hang up his helmet. >> the fact of the matter is, he is planning to retire after 22 seasons. >> reporter: the news setting off a flurry of confusion among fans. brady's own sports company tweeting this tribute, then taking it down. soon after, brady's agent releasing a statement saying the seven-time super bowl champ "would be the only person to express his plans with complete accuracy." the timing of brady's decision is up in the air, but darlington says the reasoning is relatively simple. >> tom brady is making the decision that he feels is best for him at this point in his life and that is leaving football behind. >> reporter: the 44-year-old's unrivaled career got off to a rough start. the scouting report before he was drafted in the sixth round called him skinny, lacking in physical stature and strength. that was then. now, widely considered to be the greatest quarterback of all time. the bucs' head coach says he has not been informed of any retirement. tom brady's father says he flat-out denies the report. as for the g.o.a.t. himself, nothing official. linsey?
