they show the underwater volcano iraq in near the islands of tonga that triggered warnings. all internet connectivity has been lost, so we are not getting information on the extent of damage, though there are reports that people are having trouble breathing because of the ash. some boats have also been damaged by the waves. we have live coverage frio with spencer christian and ryan curry in santa cruz and cornell barnard in tid. cornell: it was a wild day and pretty scary for a lot of neighbors. we are live inside this cove, where things are really calm right now, but the damage from today's tsunami surge left several boat docks like that one have really damage, and assent sailboats spinning. some say that the water rose within a matter of minutes today. >> holy [beep] holy [beep] cornell: this was the scary moment tsunami waves arrived saturday, ripping this boat dock off the front of this home, casting to boats and the dock adrift into richardson bay. >> the water just came in, took the dock out. the edge of the balcony is off, so i ran inside, grabbed my daughter, packed up my car. cornell: for several hours, the tsunami surge came in cycles, strong enough to send the runaway dock crashing into support beams at the apartment complex. >> be careful. cornell: the -- >> the dock was picking up momentum as it headed towards this building, and that was a little scary. >> seeing these waves rolling in and of the water level being significantly higher. thank king tied, but on steroids. >> this is a tsunami advisory in effect. stay out of the water. cornell: the san francisco fire department advised people to stay away from ocean beach. >> reevaluate your plans if they involve going to the water or near the coastlines for today. cornell: many people still flocked to the beach, cameras ready to capture any big waves. >> the waves definitely look like they are bigger, but kind of hoping for even bigger waves to view. >> you don't get this kind of excitement of a day and i want to see it for myself. cornell: the advisory closed acre beach, and fort folks on four-bagger peer were warned about the danger. >> i am a science teacher so i wanted to see it firsthand. cornell: u.s. coast guard cutters were seen patrolling the shoreline. it is a day nobody saw coming. >> we never expect this would happen. >> i will take tsunami alerts more seriously now. cornell: we are back live with what is left of one of those boat docks. the ramp to that dock is now underwater. neighbors in marin county say they got warnings on their phone this morning about the tsunami advisory. damage from today's event is really still being added up. live in tiburon tonight, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. dion: that is wild video, thanks. over to santa cruz comeau where tsunami waves arrived in the pulses and flooded the santa cruz harbor and parking lot. ryan curry joins us from the harbor. what can you tell us? ryan: good evening. many santa cruz residents started the day very concerned over the incoming tsunami threat. water rose to cautious levels in some areas, especially near the santa cruz harbor. as the day went on, many residents and their concerns were eased. santa cruz residents on high alert saturday. >> we were watching the water push the lower deck on the waterfront, and the wharf was really moving. cornell: edward martinez was out monitoring the water levels in the morning. he initially did nothing the tsunami warning was much of a problem, but he says the water level kept rising, especially toward the harbor, causing him some concern. >> we were like, maybe this is a big deal. we were looking out towards the beach. you can see the plume behind me. all of a sudden, it disappeared and of the water kept going up and up and up. cornell: all day long, coast guard crews patrolled the beach to patrol the water level. beaches across the santa cruz area were covered in debris and water levels were much higher than they usually were. >> we came out about 7:30. we had heard there was a tsunami warning, so we stayed up on the bluff. ryan: christy hughes says she began the day on high ground to avoid any potential tsunami. she says there was not much to see near the water, but emergency crews were all over the beaches. >> you could really see it at the harbor. there were a lot of people out. there were a lot of police and firefighters. you could see almost like a river flowing out to the ocean. ryan: but despite the threat, beachgoers were not deterred from going near the water. surfers were spotted in the ocean and many others still got close to the water. >> we were listening for sirens from about 7:30 in the morning. we didn't hear them until almost 11:00. then lots of sirens. ryan: as the afternoon went many people returned to the beaches. we spoke with some residents saying it is usually more crowded on a saturday afternoon, especially with the weather is nice as it was, but not as many people came today. live in santa cruz, ryan curry, abc 7 news. dion: probably a very good idea. now to a time lapse from our santa cruz tower cam. you can see one of the tsunami surges with the water reaching just past our camera view. today was a much different scene in santa cruz than back in 2011. hard to watch. that is when the massive earthquake off the coast of japan generated a tsunami in california. it caused $20 million worth of damage to the santa cruz harbor. more than 100 people were evacuated from the berkeley arena following this morning's tsunami advisory. the evacuation was limited to the docks and boats along the shoreline. roads near the marina remained open. authorities got the all clear from the state office of emergency services at 3:50 this afternoon. everyone is still urged to use caution on boats and docks. let's get more from weather anchor spencer christian. i cannot believe those surfers worst out in the water. spencer: it is amazing. it is not advised. they should not be doing that. you mentioned caution. we should be cautious. this is a tsunami advisory, not a warning, but you should take it seriously nonetheless. here are some things to bear in mind. this was issued this morning. it is in effect for the entire west coast, california, oregon, washington, until further notice. some of the effects, strong current, surging waves, and here are some precautionary measures to keep in mind. stay away from the beaches, avoid harbors and marinas as well. when you are at the coast line, do not turn your back on the water, and keep up with the the dallas-fort worth area. the hostage taker is demanding a known terrorist be released from prison. abc news reporter alex presha has more on the story. alex: the situation unfolded at a synagogue in the dallas-fort worth area saturday morning. authorities say an armed suspect has taken hostages at congregation beth israel. the colleyville police department swat team responded to the scene, evacuating residents in the immediate area. a source tells abc news that the hostage taker has demanded a woman name aafia siddiqui be released from prison. siddiqui is a known terrorist incarcerated at carswell air force base near fort worth. she was sentenced to 86 years in prison after being convicted in manhattan federal court in 2010 for trying to kill u.s. soldiers and fbi agents in afghanistan. the fbi, along with local authorities and hostage negotiators, are on scene. the white house and homeland security secretary have been briefed on the situation. alex presha, abc news, washington. dion: still to come on abc 7 news at 5:00, some states are getting hit with a strong winter storm. where snowfall is causing some big problems as though storm tracks across the country. plus, free at home covid tests, if you can find them. dion: six people were hospitalized outside of a concert in eugene, oregon. police responded to reports of multiple gunshots outside of a concert hall. it is still unknown whether it was all random or a targeted shooting. one person is in critical condition. no arrests have been made. a big winter storm is sweeping across 33 states, bringing heavy rain, snow, and freezing cold temperatures. so far, over a foot of snow has fallen in north dakota. the storm is heading southeast through sunday. even more snow is anticipated as the storm moves northeast into monday. 75 million americans are on high alert, some getting supplies before the storm. >> some groceries, some supplies before it gets bad and we get snowed in. just trying to get everything ready before it gets swampy and they run out of groceries. dion: probably a good idea. the governor of north carolina deployed 200 national guard soldiers. several states in the southeast have declared a state of emergency. so far, there are 2000 flight cancellations for sunday. as of today, you can get at-home covid tests at no cost. you can buy the test online or in stores, if you can find them, and have them paid for at the time of purchase or get reimbursed by submitting a claim. insurers must pay for up to eight tests per covered individual per month. there is no limit if a doctor orders more tests. all of this is part of president biden's plan to increase access to at-home rapid tests across the country. the bite and administer asian has launched a website spencer: the waves are elevated here and we will see some localized flooding in harbors and marinas. nothing devastating is expected, but we need to be aware and stay away from the coastline. we have calm wind around the bay area. a mixed sky condition, a few high clouds around, but the skies have been bright from time to time. this is a colorful western sky we are looking at from the emeryville camera. 61 degrees in san francisco. temperatures in the upper 60's. half moo60 degrees at santa cla. mixed conditions in the sky. we have breaks of clear sky. temperatures in the north bay mainly in the low to mid 50's. the winds are shifting east of it. mid-50's in concord and livermore. a beautiful view of the western sky from the east bay hills camera. these are the forecast futures. tsunami advisory remains in effect until further notice. cloudy skies remain with us with cooler weather and a mild day-to-day. this dry powdered -- pattern will continue next week. high clouds passing by in the early morning hours. we will get some bright spots during the day tomorrow as well but the clouds probably will not completely disappear. overnight low temperatures generally in the low to mid 40's in our inland areas. look for lows in the mid to upper 40's, mainly upper 40's on the coast, then highs tomorrow under partly cloudy skies. 59 degrees at half moon bay. 58 in san francisco. we
