we didn't see a former president who had just rallied the mob to attack sitting in the private dining room off the oval office in the white house, watching it all on television and doing nothing for hours, as police were assaulted, lives at risk, the nation's capitol under siege. >> reporter: biden accused trump of choosing himself over his country. >> his bruised ego matters more to him than our democracy or our constitution. he can't accept he lost. >> reporter: the president condemning republican leaders for enabling trump's lies, noting many were eager to challenge the results of the presidential election, but didn't question that republicans won races up and down the ballot, from house to senate to governor. >> they challenged none of that. somehow those results are accurate on the same ballot, but the presidential race was flawed? and on the same ballot, the same day, cast by the same voters? >> reporter: biden today vowing to defend american democracy from donald trump. >> i did not seek this fight brought to this capitol one year ago today, but i will not shrink from it, either. i will stand in this breach. i will defend this nation. and i'll allow no one to place a dagger at the throat of democracy. >> that line right there getting a lot of attention today. let's bring in mary bruce, live at the capitol tonight. and mary, president biden, as we saw there, never once mentioned former president trump by name. and when he was done speaking to the american people today, reporters up there at the capitol asked him why. >> reporter: and david, biden said he didn't call out trump by name because he doesn't want this to turn into a political battle between him and the former president. but biden said what happened that day cannot be ignored. he said great nations face the truth. they face it, deal with it, and move on. david? >> mary bruce live at the capitol leading us off tonight. mary, thank you. and as i mentioned at the top tonight, the only two republicans on the house floor today observing the magnitude of this day were congresswoman liz cheney, and in an unexpected moment, her father, former vice president dick cheney joining her. and what he told our jonathan karl. >> reporter: lawmakers gathered today to remember the attack on the capitol, but only two republicans showed up -- congresswoman liz cheney and her father, the former vice president, himself a longtime member of the house. they were front and center, surrounded by empty seats usually occupied by republicans, as the chamber paused for a moment of silence to honor the police officers attacked on that day. >> what are your thoughts on the fact that few other republicans showed up today? >> i think it's a reflection of where our party is. it's very concerning. >> reporter: in the days and weeks immediately following the insurrection, republican congressional leaders pointed the finger at donald trump. >> there is no question, none, that president trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. no question about it. >> the president bears responsibility for wednesday's attack on congress by mob rioters. he hould have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. >> reporter: but today, they were largely silent. dick cheney told me, quote, i'm deeply disappointed we don't have better leadership in the republican party. he called his daughter the exception. she's been shunned by the gop for taking a lead role in investigating the insurrection. >> i'm very proud of liz. >> reporter: i asked the former vice president why he came to the capitol today. "it's an important historical event," he said. "you can't overestimate how important it is." as for former president trump, he issued several written statements today, repeating lies that he has often repeated over the past year about the election and accusing democrats of stoking fears and dividing america. david? >> all right, jon karl, who was on the air with us all day long here. jon, thank you. and a final note on this day, something you might remember from a year ago. a letter to an officer. and we'll have that coming up here. in the meantime, we move on tonight to the other news this thursday evening. we are tracking a dangerous snowstorm approaching the east coast at this hour. d.c., philadelphia, new york city, right up into new england, all will get hit. several inches in snow in some places. new york's governor tonight warning of travel that could be dangerous. it has been already. this storm slamming the mid-south today. multiple accidents in columbia, tennessee. these pictures, a massive pileup turning i-75 into a parking lot in lexington, kentucky. and tonight, the lake effect machine, too. blizzard-like conditions, this is downtown buffalo. at the airport there, 15 inches of snow. senior meteorologist rob marciano now tracking the storm moving into the east next and he's timing it out tonight. hey, rob. >> reporter: hi, david. i'm worried about, as much snow that's fallen in kentucky and tennessee, that's it going to be a big mess in the northeast in the morning. the snow shield already into pennsylvania and hard-hit virginia. here you see it. by 5:00 in the morning. places like baltimore, philadelphia, new york, all the roads will be snow covered. that's when the heavy stuff really comes down along i-95 and roads i think are going to be trashed there. but it should be gone by the afternoon commute, so, it is a fast mover. but it's a significant storm. widespread accumulations of three to six inches and spots over eight inches along the coastal areas there. going to be difficult for sure, but many schools have already announced delays, many will be canceled. road crews will have their hands full. david? >> yeah, take it slow tomorrow morning is the message. rob marciano, our thanks to you tonight. next this evening, the pandemic. covid cases setting records now in more than 30 states. more than a half million new cases a day nationwide. tonight, what the ceo of moderna reportedly said today about the possibility of americans now needing a fourth covid shot and when. all of this comes as teenagers 12 to 15 years old were rolling up their sleeves already for booster shots in hartford, connecticut, and elsewhere, after the cdc gave the final green light. it comes as covid hospitalizations among children rose again. 4,400 now. the number doubling in two weeks. and the american medical association tonight calling out the cdc for that guidance that you should isolate for just five days. what the doctors' group is now saying about that tonight. here's whit johnson. >> reporter: across the country today, a new wave of pfizer booster shots for 12 to 15-year-olds. >> it's kind of like a seat belt or helmet. you may crash, get the virus, you may fall. but it's just that extra layer of protection. >> reporter: nearly 17 million more kids will now be eligible for that third shot, once they're five months out from their second dose. bit of an emotional experience for you? >> it is. i've actually teared up many times through this process. she is just one step closer to that full immunity that her brothers have. >> reporter: but nearly 9 million 12 to 17-year-olds remain unvaccinated. a record number of children, 4,400, now hospitalized across the country. >> in susceptible children that have not been vaccinated, it's spreading very quickly, very rapidly in the community. so that's why when you have thousands of kids that are infected, some of them will end up in the hospital. >> reporter: like 18-year-old mitchell tobey in ohio, who says his condition went downhill quickly. >> i woke up with a fever, and i had a 105, and everything from there started going south really fast. >> reporter: his parents were initially worried about his rare autoimmune disease, but say they're now determined to get him vaccinated. >> we know vaccines work. and this situation -- we probably wouldn't be here if he had taken the vaccine. >> reporter: new covid cases now averaging more than half a million per day. at least 32 states are breaking pandemic records, leaving thousands of schools in limbo. classrooms in chicago shutdown for a second day over a standoff between the city and the teachers union. >> this is stressful, and it's hard for single mothers and single parents and single fathers. that's a 9:00 to 5:00 job. >> reporter: with a highly infectious variant like omicron, some experts once again are urging people to upgrade their masks. new york planning to distribute n95 masks out to schools, and los angeles county requiring indoor workers to wear medical grade masks. >> my advice to everyone out there is to get a mask that has both proper fit and filtration, something like an n95 or a kf94. if you don't have access, you can wear a surgical mask and put a cloth one over it. >> let's get to whit johnson tonight. the ama with a scathing comment towards the cdc, that reck men recommendation they gave, that shorter isolation, saying isolate for five days instead of ten. so, what is this doctors' group saying tonight? and also, what is the latest on this idea of a potential fourth covid shot coming? >> reporter: well, david, the president of the ama telling us these new cdc guidelines are confusing, actually put public health at risk. the group is pointing to research indicating that you can still be infectious after five days, so the ama instead is recommending a seven-day isolation period, ideally with a negative rapid test before people go about their regular lives. and as you noted there today, the ceo of moderna saying with declining efficacy of booster shots over time, it's possible some people might need a fourth shot by the fall, but many health experts insist it's still too soon to know. david? >> we'll track that as it comes. whit johnson tonight. whit, thank you. overseas tonight. violent unrest threatening the authoritarian regime in the former soviet republic of kazakhstan. the unrest initially sparked in part by a sharp rise in gas prices, then turning into an attempted revolution. the government now trying to regain control. security forces killing dozens of protesters after clashes left at least 18 officers dead. russia today sending paratroopers to help the government there. the u.s. state department tonight appealing for a peaceful resolution. and in australia tonight, the top men's tennis player in the world, novak djokovic, fighting to stay and play to defend his title at the australian open, but tonight, he's been confined to an immigration detention hotel, facing possible deportation. a vaccine skeptic. his covid vaccine exemption has been denied, and now what rafael nadal is now saying about all of this. here's maggie rulli. >> reporter: tonight, the family of the world's number one men's tennis player novak djokovic accusing australian authorities of holding him prisoner. >> if you are a mother, you can just imagine how you -- how can i feel? i feel terrible. since yesterday, last 24 hours, they are keeping him as a prisoner. >> reporter: djokovic now being held in this immigration detention hotel while his lawyers fight to let him stay in the country and compete. >> it's just not fair. it's not human. >> reporter: the grand slam winner receiving a medical vaccine exemption from victorian state and tennis officials, but when he arrived in melbourne late wednesday for the australian open, federal border authorities detained him at the airport for hours before canceling his visa. authorities say djokovic failed to provide appropriate evidence to meet the entry requirements to australia. djokovic has not publicly revealed his vaccination status, though he has been an outspoken vaccine skeptic. today, his supporters seen protesting outside the hotel. and today, rival rafael nadal, tied with djokovic for the most grand slam titles at 20, also weighing in. >> the only clear thing is, if you are vaccinated, you can play in the australian open and everywhere. and the world, in my opinion, have been suffering enough to not follow the rules. >> reporter: and david, djokovic now has to wait until his court case on monday to find out if he's able to stay in the country and compete. the australian open is set to start on january 17th. david?
