>> pierre thomas leading us off tonight. pierre, thank you. we move on to the new variant omicron, now spreading across the globe and what the cdc director, dr. rochelle walensky said about what's being done in the u.s. now. she said one out of every seven new cases is being sequenced. now confirmed cases in at least 20 countries. three more countries in just the past 24 hours. this evening the seemingly different messages from moderna and pfizer about the vaccines and how well they might protect people against omicron. tonight why the level of antibodies in your system after both vaccine shots and the booster is so important. here's abc's stephanie ramos. >> reporter: with the new variant spreading around the globe, the cdc director tonight says the country is on high alert and expanding surveillance in search of the first omicron case in the u.s. >> we have the tools and surveillance in place to identify the omicron variant. we also have the tools to prevent omicron from increasing the strain on our society and our health care system. >> reporter: the administration offering free covid testing for some international travelers at airports in new york, atlanta, newark and san francisco. and labs around the country sequencing one in seven covid positive test samples. i'm here at new york state department of health, wadsworth lab in albany, new york, where scientists are taking a closer look at positive covid samples, about 800 of them a week. researchers here started hunting for omicron just as soon as the variant, with its 50 mutations, was identified. >> is it possible it's in the air and that it's already here in the u.s.? >> that is absolutely entirely possible. the statistical power of the sequencing programs and the surveillance programs is pretty high. so i think we should see it fairly promptly. >> reporter: more than 240 cases of omicron have now been confirmed in 20 countries. but tonight there are new questions about where it originated. dutch officials now confirming two cases of omicron were in the netherlands before it was detected in passengers arriving friday from south africa. covid cases in south africa spiking 53% in just the last day. 10% of hospital admissions in the omicron epicenter there are reportedly unvaccinated children under 2 years old, a similar trend seen during the delta wave. but after some doctors reported omicron symptoms in south africa are mild, dr. anthony fauci cautioning that it's too soon to draw conclusions. >> the physicians, mostly private physicians, who've been seeing patients, are seeing that they appear to be a less of a severity of illness. most of those are many younger individuals. we believe that it is too soon to tell what the level of severity is. >> reporter: the white house today reassuring americans that if necessary, it would take about three months for vaccines makers to update the vaccine for omicron and get shots into arms. >> the estimate of a few months is all inclusive. >> reporter: just hours after moderna's ceo warned the vaccines will be less effective at tackling omicron, saying all the scientists i've talked to say this is not going to be good, the founder of pfizer's partner biontech said even if the variant brings more breakthrough infections, the vaccine should protect the vaccinated from severe illness. tonight health authorities reminding americans a booster shot is the best protection saying antibody levels are higher after the third shot than the second. >> we know from every variant that we have dealt with that the more neutralizing antibodies you have on board, the more effective those vaccines are against variants. and we expect, even if it's not perfect, certainly the more neutralizing antibodies, the fact that you're boosted, the greater protection you can have. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci echoing that point just today. >> particularly when you boost it, you get a level so high, that even if the mutations of various variants diminish that level of protection, you're still within the range of some degree of protection. >> continuing to saying there will be some degree of protection. news tonight the fda panel has voted in favor of authorizing merck's anti-viral pill for covid. it's the first anti-viral pill approved? >> reporter: the pill was found to be 30% effective. that is not as high as expected. advisers questioned whether it would be safe for children and pregnant women. the final decision now goes to the fda, but this would be the first anti-viral covid pill you can take at home with a prescription. david? >> stephanie ramos tonight. stephanie, thank you. we turn to the difficult testimony in the sex trafficking trial of ghislaine maxwell, jeffrey epstein's friend and alleged accomplice. the first of her accusers taking the stand today. the witness claiming epstein began sexually assaulting her when she was just 14. telling the jury about the other person most often in the room. here's abc's erielle reshef. >> reporter: tonight, socialite ghislaine maxwell, close associate of convicted sex offender jeffrey epstein, face to face with one of her accusers in a criminal trial gaining international attention. the woman, identified only by the pseudonym jane telling the jury that she met maxwell and the disgraced financier the summer after 7th grade at a prestigious camp where he was a major donor. jane claiming her first sexual contact with epstein was at his palm beach house in 1994 when she was just 14 and that those sexual encounters, including explicit massages, happened during every visit. and when asked who was most often in the room, other than epstein, jane replying ghislaine maxwell, pointing to the 59-year-old, alleging it was maxwell who showed her how jeffery likes to be massaged. >> this is very powerful, very emotional, very personal testimony coming from this witness. >> reporter: earlier today epstein's long time pilot larry visoski testifying that epstein introduced him to jane in the cockpit more than two decades ago. remembering her as a mature woman, with piercing, powder blue eyes, but claiming he did not know her age. visoski also saying he only knew who was on board the jet if it was someone noteworthy, like former presidents bill clinton, donald trump and prince andrew, all of whom are known to have socialized with epstein in the past. visoski emphatic he never saw any sexual activity on board. maxwell has pleaded not guilty to all six federal counts. her defense team and family arguing she has been a scapegoat for authorities. >> the challenge for prosecutors is making sure they don't focus too much just on jeffrey epstein. that's exactly what the defense is arguing. >> reporter: maxwell's attorneys stressed that 20 years have gone by and questioned jane about why it took her so long to come forward with allegations against maxwell. they'll continue their cross examination tomorrow. david? >> erielle reshef, thank you. jury selection is under way in the high profile trial of the former minnesota police officer, kim potter, in the killing of daunte wright. the police body cam showing her confusing her gun with her taser. today her attorneys telling jurors she will testify. warning tonight, the images are disturbing. here's alex perez. >> reporter: tonight, the bombshell revelation in court. defense attorneys announcing during jury selection that former police officer kim potter, who says she mistakenly shot daunte wright with her gun instead of a taser, will take the witness stand in her own trial. >> if you're selected, officer potter will testify and tell you what she remembered happened. >> right, right. >> reporter: four jurors selected today, two men and two women. potter, who's charged with first and second degree manslaughter, says she pulled 20-year-old wright over for expired tags, when she discovered he had a warrant for his arrest. lawyers for potter, a former 26-year police veteran, argue she intended to grab her taser when she mistakenly grabbed her gun, and pulled the trigger. >> i'll tase you! taser taser taser! >> reporter: we've frozen the body camera video just before potter fires the single bullet to the chest, killing wright, the father of a young son. >> holy [ bleep ]. i just shot him. >> reporter: wright's family emotional and demanding justice. >> daunte should be here with us now. he truly did not deserve this. >> reporter: david, this is only the second time a trial in minnesota is streamed to the public. the first was the case against derek chauvin for the murder of george floyd. in fact the potter case is happening in the same courtroom. opening arguments in the potter trial set for december 8th. david? >> alex perez with us tonight. thank you. from washington tonight former president trump's chief of staff mark meadows is now cooperating with the committee investigating the january 6th capital riot. it is a shift for one of donald trump's closest advisers who weeks ago defied a subpoena, refusing to testify. meadows has produced records to the committee and will appear for a deposition. to the economy and wall street reacting to the federal reserve chair jerome powell today and what he said about the uncertainty surrounding the new variant. the dow falling 652 points, nearly 2%. powell testifying before congress. >> the recent rise in covid-19 cases and the emergence of the omicron variant pose risks to the employment and economic activity and increased uncertainty for inflation. >> the market reacting to news powell suggesting he could remove pandemic era financial support in the next few months. when we come back on a busy night, we've been following the investigation involving former new york governor andrew cuomo. tonight the news on his brother, cnn anchor chris cuomo. take a moment to pause and ask, why did you get vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia?
