Lets get right to Ginger Zee. Also live in New Orleans. Ginger, take us through this. What to expect in the hours ahead. Reporter david, Canal Street here, weve had 83mileperhour gusts. This is a storm well be talking about through the midweek and unfortunately throughout history. All right, Ginger Zee, you and the team stay safe. I know the Wind Gusts are very dangerous, so get back under cover. We do appreciate it. And hospitals already full with Covid Patients sheltering in place. I spoke with dr. Mark klein just moments ago. Doctor, thank you so much for joining us here tonight. We knew going into the hurricane many of the hospitals in New Orleans would have to shelter in place. How are you doing so far . I know the power has gone out in part of the hospital . Were doing reasonably well. We have some Water Leaking in. Were without city power, but our Emergency Generators have kicked in and our Patient Care Areas are all secure. I know youre treating some children, obviously, many of them with covid, some with the inflammatory Disease Weve reported on. How are they doing tonight, particularly the ones on ventilators . Youve been able to keep them up running, with the generators or the power that is still on . Yes, as chaotic as it is outside, and its a pretty rough afternoon out there, as everyone knows, things are going according to plan in the hospital. We have a team that is hard at work and doing a great Job Taking Care of the kids. And everything is stable. One of the things that struck me, i know many of the doctors have small children of their own. Many of them evacuated them to atlanta, then came back to stay at this hospital . Riding out the storm with the patients. A really inspiring aspect of this. These are the same doctors that have been physically and emotionally exhausted, taking care of children with covid, and a multitude of other medical problems over the past number of months. And theyre back at it today, giving 100 . Weve been locked down since about 6 30 or 7 00 a. M. This morning, and well be here for the duration. Its just remarkable that the doctors will leave their homes and families, and get them out of harms way, but then come back to help other peoples children. Doctor, we know every Hurricane And Storm is different. But so many americans remember wading in the water to get to Charity Hospital after katrina 16 years ago. So far, it seems like hospitals are faring okay in New Orleans. We certainly hope so, david. Weve had a rough couple of months with the covid surge, and this was probably the last thing in the world we needed. Bt here it is. And well deal with it. And well get through it. Our thanks to dr. Klein, and to all of our doctors, nurses, and Front Line workers staying at work. Riding out this hurricane. Of course, the concern at this hour, the calls now coming in for help. Matt gutman in Baton Rouge tonight. I know you spoke with the Police Chief in Grand Isle tonight. Where some chose to stay, and are now trapped. What have you learned . Reporter david, the Police Chief has been there for his whole life, over 60 years. Hes weathered major hurricanes before, but he says its the worst hes ever seen. Its still so bad, they havent been able to get out and survey the damage. They expect there are still people trapped, that they will have to execute some rescues. His major concern right now in addition to sparing the people, Grand Isle may be cut off. Theres a single road leading to that spit of land. They dont have electricity or running water. Both he and others tell me theyre concerned about the future of Grand Isle. David . Matt, thank you. Ginger, victor, and those in the Storm Zone. Well have much more on Hurricane Ida tomorrow morning, and well go back to ginger in a moment. But in the meantime, we turn to the other news this sunday night. This is the second u. S. Strike on isisk since the attack that killed 13 american Service Members and dozens of afghans. Tonight, how many americans are still hoping to get out of afghanistan . Heres Ian Pannell from qatar. Reporter tonight, with just 48 hours to go, smoke rising outside of kabul airport. As the u. S. Struck isisk militants for a second time. The military revealing an Unmanned Drone struck a vehicle near kabul airport, eliminating an imminent isisk threat. The vehicle believed to be Carrying A substantial amount of explosive material. An afghan official telling Abc News that six civilians were killed. Four of them, children. This attack just a day after another u. S. Drone strike in Nangarhar Province took out two high Level Isisk members a planner and a facilitator, and injured a third fighter. The fact that two of these individuals are no longer walking on the face of the earth, thats a good thing. Reporter the strikes bringing new urgency to the evacuation mission. Hundreds once again clamoring At The Gates to the airport, desperate as the final drawdown of u. S. Troops gets under way. The State Department Today again warning americans to stay away, citing specific, credible threats surrounding the airfield. Only 50 u. S. Citizens making it out of kabul in the last 24 hours. Roughly 250 still seeking to get out. This is the most dangerous time in an already extraordinarily dangerous mission, these last couple of days. And so we will do everything possible to keep people safe, but the risk is very high. Reporter david, with just two more days left, its clear that some of those who risked their lives to help the mission will be left behind. U. S. Officials say theyre working on alternative routes. But thats little comfort to those weve spoken to, who are at home, feeling abandoned and afraid. David . Thank you, ian. Now here at home, the solemn scene today. That dignified transfer for the 13 american heroes coming home today. Heres Martha Raddatz. Reporter it is one of the most profound and solemn responsibilities for a commander in chief. Today she realized that they all just went together. Martha raddatz with us tonight. An incredibly solemn day. We were watching you On The Air with this today, and its impossible to imagine what these families are going through, and what theyll go through for years to come. I know the question now, how to protect the u. S. Service members still in kabul with just two days before the August 31st deadline to get afghans and u. S. Servicemen and women out. Reporter david, the priority right now is keeping the Service Members who remain in kabul safe, even while they evacuate more americans and afghan allies. But theres no question, this withdrawal continues to be very dangerous. David . Martha, thanks. When we come back, we remember a beloved american actor.
