The attack on the Abbey Gate was followed by a number of isis gunmen who opened fire on civilians and military forces. Reporter tonight, a somber moment as the president addressed the nation. These american Service Members who gave their lives, thats an overused word, but its totally appropriate here, were heroes. Heroes who have been engaged in a dangerous, selfless mission to save the lives of others. Reporter and then a warning. To those who carried out this attack, as well as anyone who wishes america harm, know this. We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay. Reporter the Airport Assault was one of two Suicide Attacks that killed scores of afghans, wounding more than 140 others. Its being described as a complex attack, conducted by the Terror Group known as isisk. It comes just five days before the August 31st evacuation deadline. We believe it is their desire to continue those attacks and we expect those attacks to continue. And were doing everything we can to be prepared for those attacks. That includes reaching out to the taliban who are actually providing the outer Security Cordon around the airfield to make sure they know what we expect them to do to protect us. And we will continue to coordinate with them as they go forward. Reporter the first Suicide Attack happened here at Abbey Gate, followed short by by a second blast at the nearby Baron Hotel, just 200 yards away. Shellshocked and bloodied, dozens of victims being rushed to hospital by whatever way necessary. Its become a darkly familiar routine for afghans whove had years of this. Even in the midst of danger, civilians helping one another, knowing that speed can make the difference between life and death. Abbey gate was one of three major airport entrances that the u. S. Embassy issued an urgent warning about last night, telling u. S. Citizens to avoid them at all costs because of an imminent terror threat. New video shows Security Forces using Flash Bang grenades to disperse crowds overnight. There have been persistent Rris Mhtart E past days that crowds gathered here. We were at Abbey Gate midday yesterday. This is the real Front Line here, where american soldiers and marines, din low mats and other troops risked their own lives to help the most vulnerable. These are the final steps that lead to the gate, the Perimeter Wall guarded by marines, trying to separate friend from foe. Abbey gate, follow the water. Reporter The Last Stop is the guard tower, right opposite todays blast site. Inside, troops keeping watch on the crowds below. We saw one Man Wave his blue u. S. Passport and the troops responded immediately. I can help you get in Abbey Gate. You is have to wait over there. Reporter after the tower, it is a handful of steps out into the crowds. Through the Gates to the ditch that separates thousands of people from their hopes of getting inside the airport to freedom. These are just devastating, heartbreaking scenes here. These people down here are stood in Sewage Water up to their knees and this is what ive been saying. This is the difference potentially between the lifesaving work thats being carried out by the military here and potentially death by the taliban. Less than five yards. The deadly attack now throwing an already chaotic evacuation into more confusion. The route to the airport too dangerous for some. So Helicopter Rescue missions have been running to help people, but only three known flights have run in the past week. U. S. Officials say another 500 americans have been evacuated from afghanistan in the past day, 5,000 americans in all. The State Department says as many as 1,000 americans remain in afghanistan, twothirds of them are trying to leave and some may already have. But for afghans who have helped america, the situation is truly dire. We received this distressing message from parwana, who worked for the u. S. Mission. She has special immigrant Visa Status and was told to go to the airport days ago, but cant get through. They will leave us behind. And i dont think anyone will come for helping us. Reporter the u. S. Airlift slowing down in the past two days. About 12,000 people flown out yesterday, down from 19,000 The Day before. In all, over 104,000 have been evacuated from the country by the Allies. 66,000 by the u. S. Alone. Now the largest humanitarian airlift in history. General mckenzies vowing to continue the airlift, but struggled to explain what went so tragically wrong. Well, clearly, if they were able to get up to the marines at the screening, at the entrypoint of the base, it was a failure somewhere. You can be assured were going to continue to look at it and try to make all our practices better as we go forward. Reporter but today will not be about the relief of so many, but the sacrifice of the few. And Ian Pannell back with us again tonight and ian, we know that isisk claimed responsibility for this attack outside the airport. They actually issued a statement, saying their fighter was able to overcome all the security fortifications, reaching a distance of, quote, no more than five meters from The American forces. The president and General Mckenzie saying this threat from isisk continues. The general actually said he expects the attacks to continue. He actually spoke of possible rockets, more vests. How do they keep the airlift going, planes taking off, our Service Members there checking these evacuees, what does this look like in these few days left . Reporter you know, david, the numbers of people getting out of the country in the last couple of days has started to decline and this event is likely to see a continuation of that. This event underlines the enduring threat of terrorism in the country, not just isisk, Al Qaeda are still there, although diminished. And General Mckenzie highlighted a specific threat against the evacuation flights, packed with hundreds of afghans, that someone could get inside, detonate some kind of device, perhaps attack it from the ground. Its already been a terrible day and the risks are only growing. David . Pan Yanl leading us off, thank you. And tonight here, the scope of The American loss. We learned just as we came on the Air Tonight that another Service Member has died, as i said off the top, 13 u. S. Service members killed in this attack. And we took note today, what the general said, how he described what these Service Members were tasked with doing right at the Airport Gate in this dangerous mission, their bravery, their risk and now their families back home forever changed. Heres our chief global Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz. Reporter it is the deadliest attack on u. S. Forces in afghanistan in a decade, and now the families of american Service Members will get that knock on the door. An officer there to deliver the worst possible news. The marines and the Navy Medic killed today were guarding the airport in kabul, screening each and every person who went in. More than 104,000 men, Women And Children checked for weapons. This is closeup work. The breath of the person you are searching is upon you. While we have overwatch in place, we still have to touch the clothes of the person thats coming in. I think you all can appreciate the courage and the dedication that is necessary to do this job. And to do it time after time. Reporter for days, nearly 6,000 american troops have worked tirelessly to evacuate u. S. Citizens and their after began Allies. After the airport was overrun, desperate afghans swarming the runways, the marines restored order, securing the perimeter and facilitating one of the largest airlifts in history. Brave men and women consoling traumatized families around the clock. But also becoming a prime terrorist target, the threat growing by the hour. They were part of the bravest, most capable, the most selfless military on the face of the earth. And they were part of, simply what i call the backbone of america. They are the spine of america. The best the country has to offer. Reporter when i traveled to afghanistan, American Military leaders warned of the danger ahead as u. S. Troops prepared to leave. Now it has come to pass. The general in charge preparing the nation for more attacks. More american deaths. And the mission is not nearly over yet. And so Martha Raddatz back with us tonight, as well, and martha, we know this mission continues until August 31st, the president saying we will get all americans and afghans who helped us out, everyone possible in the time alotted. That was slightly different from what weve heard from him before. A clear reference to time running out here. And after these attacks and the u. S. Service members lost, the president now asking commanders for a plan to retaliate . Reporter he certainly is, david. And he says they believe they know where the isis leaders are. The president saying, we will respond with Force And Precision at the time and place we choose. David . Martha raddatz with me all day long here. Martha, thank you. And our thanks to ian, as well. Our coverage of afghanistan tonight. We will have much more on Nightline And Tomorrow on gma. But we continue tonight with news on the pandemic in this country. This evening, the alarming new forecast. Authorities now say we could see nearly 100,000 more Covid Deaths by just december. The u. S. The Vaccination Rate is going up amid all of this. 202 Million people now with at least one dose. Thats 71 of everyone 12 and older. And tonight here, the cdc continuing to warn about the dangers of using a drug intended for horses and cows, a deworming medication, touted on some cable news. Abcs Marcus Moore from texas tonight. Reporter the Country Tonight facing a tire forecast, estimating nearly 100,000 more americans could die of covid between now and the first of december if current trends continue. Ive seen a lot of people die over the last year and a half, and it is picking up pace at a sort of unprecedented rate. Its never been as bad as it is right now. Its truly awful. Reporter Texas Today nearing its highest number of covid patients. Some hospitals so overwhelmed, theyre forced to transfer the sick. But in houston, a glimmer of hope. A long line of cars at this Vaccine Site as Cash Incentives and the mounting Crisis Push more people to get the shot. Woo its over reporter Michelle Tate was finally able to get the vaccine after almost losing her life. The 42yearold Mother was waiting to get the shot when she got sick in march. I decided to get the vaccine because i thought to myself, there is absolutely no way that im leaving the safety of this hospital without being vaccinated. Reporter florida facing its darkest days as some hospitals in the central part of the state run out of morgue space. Our Victor Oquendo is in miami.
