Good evening and its great to have you with us here on a wednesday night. We have several developing stories as we come on the air tonight. There is news this evening on the Johnson Johnson oneshot and on the pfizer vaccine. New evidence on both vaccines, what theyre seeing in antibodies after a booster shot. This could be very key moving forward. But we are going to begin tonight with the Emergency Evacuations in afghanistan. Just six days until President Bidens August 31st deadline. Tonight, the Secretary Of State now saying up to 1,500 americans remain in that country and that theyve reached about a third of them. And what he said to americans and afghans who helped us, who will still be in that country after August 31st. Making a promise. But what will that effort after the deadline look like . Outside the kabul airport, thousands still waiting, hoping to get inside and to get on a flight. And newly emerging images tonight, whats becoming a familiar scene there, some evacuees being helped to climb over barbed wire, over this wall, to get into the airport. While others were wading through sewage, just awful conditions there, holding up their documents, hoping to get on one of those planes. New video from inside the Airport Tonight from the 18th airborne, soldiers there readying afghans to board flights out. Across kabul tonight, the taliban on patrol. They have said the president s August 31st deadline is a Red Line. And tonight, we have learned of a third Helicopter Operation taking place overnight helping a number of evacuees get to that airport. The Secretary Of State saying the u. S. Remains very concerned about the Isis Terror Threat on the ground, a sworn enemy of the taliban, too. And that promise from the Secretary Of State after the August 31st deadline, that this effort to help americans and afghans will continue, but as i asked, what will it look like . Heres our chief global Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz leading us off tonight. Reporter tonight, the State Department Warning that at least 500 and as many as 1,500 americans may still need to be evacuated from afghanistan and that the u. S. Wont be leaving anyone behind. Let me be crystal clear about this. There is no deadline on our work to help any remaining american citizens who decide they want to leave to do so. Along with the many afghans who have stood by us over these many years. Reporter 4,500 americans have already been airlifted out. Some 500 just today. President biden set August 31st as the deadline for the evacuation. A date the taliban called a Red Line for the u. S. Getting out of afghanistan entirely. The president says well meet the deadline, but for any left behind that effort will continue every day past August 31st. The taliban have made public and private commitments to provide and permit safe passage for americans, for third country nationals and afghans at risk going forward past August 31st. Reporter there are concerns the longer the u. S. Stays, the higher the risk at the airport, where they fear an attack by an isis offshoot. Were operating in a hostile environment in a City And Country now controlled by the taliban with the very real possibility of an isisk attack. Were taking every precaution, but this is very high risk. Reporter officials fear the crowds of desperate afghans outside the airport could be a prime target. Civilians kneedeep in sewage, seen here waving papers and shouting out in the hopes of getting in before time runs out. We know there are a lot of desperate people who want to leave, and thats why we are working as fast as we can. Reporter the pentagon revealing that overnight a Helicopter Mission rescued several people trapped by the taliban. Last night during the period of darkness, there was an operation to be able to go out and safely evacuate evacuees back into kabul. Reporter its the third such mission in a week to rescue hundreds of americans and allies. The pentagon saying 19,000 people were evacuated in the last 24 hours. Many passing through armed taliban checkpoints before making it inside the airport. While the pentagon claims people with the right documents are making it through, some afghans are reportedly being held back by the taliban, even when they have the right paperwork. I know the most senior commanders on the ground are out and discussing with the taliban leaders that are manning these checkpoints exactly what the documentation needs to look like. Reporter but families especially becoming increasingly concerned. Reports children have been separated from their parents in crushing crowds, many barefoot and hungry, some evacuated outside of the counry before being reunited with their families. Our Ian Pannell on the ground in kabul. The children are scared to death. It was extremely difficult to get through the gates for them and then to be separated from their families and then to not have the language and not know where theyre going, its extremely difficult. Reporter evacuees being airlifted around the world to ease the bottleneck of refugees at the u. S. Base in doha. Thousands packed inside in conditions that are only growing more dire. And we are now seeing the massive arsenal left behind by the u. S. For the afghan forces that could fall into taliban hands. Including up to 980,000 infantry weapons, 22,000 humvees and about 150 aircraft. The majority of those helicopters and planes still remain in the country. And Martha Raddatz with us tonight. We know ian is in transit tonight, having traveled out of kabul after several days on the ground there reporting for us. You were in afghanistan several weeks back yourself and we heard what Secretary Blinken said today, that after the August 31st deadline, that the effort will continue every day. That was his promise to americans who might still be there and to afghans who helped us. But ive been asking, what will that effort look like . Reporter well, david, first of all, the taliban will be in charge of the airport and they say they will keep it open, but as we know, the biggest problem is for those afghan allies to get to the airport past the taliban, so, it remains unclear how this will work and it most certainly will be dangerous. But still, the administration will stick to that August 31st deadline. Martha raddatz leading us off tonight. And martha, im going to ask that you stay with us here, because we know this next story is personal to you. We have been reporting here on the Tens Of Thousands of afghan interpreters and others who helped the u. S. Over this 20year war and one interpreter in particular named abdul who martha met in afghanistan in june. Hes been in touch with her all along. The taliban showing up at his familys door. Tonight here, martha with an extraordinary update. Reporter this is abdul. For 18 months, he was an interpreter working alongside American Marines in the most dangerous part of afghanistan, helmand province. When we met him in kabul in june, he already knew he was a marked man. I know that i will be killed by the taliban. Reporter when the taliban seized kabul, abdul, his wife and three daughters went into hiding. Moving from House To house, the taliban right behind them. Abcs stephanie ramos taking his case to President Biden. Last month, my colleague Martha Raddatz interviewed abdul, an interpreter who was on the front lines with u. S. Forces in afghanistan. Overnight, we received a photo of taliban militants coming to the door of his home, literally hunting him down. Thankfully he was able to escape, but he is obviously still in mortal danger. What would be your message to abul, his wife and his three young daughters . We want you to be able to get to the airport, contact us, well see whatever we can do to get you there. Reporter on that same day, we got a message from abdul, saying he did his job with honesty and pride, but that americans had left us to people who are not human and will cut off our heads in front of our families. For days, abc news and others in and out of government worked tirelessly to help and now, there is good news to report. Abdul and his family have all left afghanistan, safe. And look at the faces of his children, the smiles there. Lets bring back in martha tonight. Weve been talking about abdul for days, youve been texting me updates and photos after the news at night. I know you kept this a secret alongway for his own safety, his familys safety. But we know this is just one afghan interpreter and his family. Tens of thousands remain and youve learned tonight that theyre getting help not just from the american government, but from veterans all over this country who served alongside them in afghanistan, now working around the clock to try to get them out. Reporter oh, david, they really are. There are vast networks of veterans, civilians and former agency people trying to help those stranded afghans and they say they will keep at it until they are all out of there. They have really done heroic work, david. And martha, i know you will take no credit for this, but we appreciate you staying on Abduls Story and you certainly helped along the way. Thank you. Our coverage of afghanistan right here for tonight. In the meantime, were going to move on now to the other news, and the major headline on the pandemic here in the u. S. And vaccines. Both pfizer and Johnson Johnson saying they have New Evidence that Vaccine Booster shots increase protection from covid and dramatically. Here are the numbers tonight. J j releasing new data showing a booster six months after getting that oneshot vaccine increased Antibody Protection ninefold. Pfizer saying they saw three times the antibodies after their booster shot. At the same time tonight, moderna has now completed its application from the fda for full approval, just days after pfizer got that full approval. And all of it as health Officials Tonight say that vaccination is the only way out of this pandemic. And that these boosters likely available in september will be needed to get ahold of this sweeping delta variant. And with 100,000 people in the u. S. Now hospitalized with covid, thats the highest level in seven months. Tonight, were inside a hospital In Galveston where nearly all of the patients in the Icu Are On Ventilators tonight. All but one unvaccinated. Abcs Marcus Moore from texas. Reporter tonight, mounting evidence that Vaccine Booster shots could increase protection from covid19. Pfizer reporting on new data showing people who got a booster five to eight months after the second dose saw three times the antibodies. The company will now ask that full authorization for the vaccine be extended to its booster shot. The data is very solid. It does show that theres a loss of immunity that is absolutely improved with a third dose and gives you the extra protection you need. Reporter and today, Johnson Johnson reporting Antibody Levels jumped nine times in people who got a booster six months after the one shot. The company plans to work with public health authorities to be included in the governments booster rollout. Tonight, more than 100,000 americans are Fighting Covid in hospitals. The highest number in seven months. The national guard deployed from georgia to oregon to help deal with the surge. At utmbs Jennie Sealy Hospital In Galveston, nearly all the covid patients are on ventilators and all but one are unvaccinated. Were on one of the icu floors here and every single room is full. You can tell where the covid patients are, because they have the Iv Bags just outside. Dr. Shawn nishi says this is the new normal. Its very chaotic, because these patients are very unpredictable. At one moment they look great and the next moment, theyre dying. Reporter and its taking a toll on the staff. You will see the nurses faces. They are the Heart And Soul of this institution, but a little bit of them is dying with every patient. Reporter Southeast Texas reporting nearly 700 patients are waiting for beds. There are people who, to this day, dont believe this is this is real. And i say every day i wish those people could take a walk through these units and see what these patients are going through. Reporter in oklahoma, Cheyne Satter was unvaccinated when he got covid. I was stubborn, i wont lie, extremely stubborn. I was the guy, like everybody else, if i would have gotten it by now, i would have got it. Up, up, up reporter the 27yearold had to learn how to walk and talk all over again after spending three weeks on a ventilator and he now wants the shot. I survived covid. Im getting my first vaccine shot. I dont want to go through this again. These are important messages and we bring them to you every night. Marcus back with us. And this New Evidence on boosters, marcus, is promising, but i know the cdc and the fda will study this . Reporter yeah, david, the Cdc Advisory Panel will meet on monday to discuss some of that research. But we dont expect the fda to make a decision until september, likely right before september 20th, when the biden administration wants to begin dishing out those third shots. David . All right, Marcus Moore in texas tonight. Thank you, marcus. And as were on the air in the west tonight, we continue to report on the Wildfire Emergency in the west. The new images coming in tonight.
