the tide of immigrants crossing from mexico. among them, thousands of unaccompanied minors. fema is stepping in to help. republicans blame president biden for creating the border crisis. democrats say he inherited a broken system. tracking your checks for covid relief. it's already in some americans' bank accounts. the irs website tracks when it's coming to you. and the child tax credit that could lift 4 million children out of poverty. weeks without water. tens of thousands still without safe running water in mississippi. tonight, the local chefs cooking up some relief. end of an era. saints quarterback drew brees making a major announcement with the help of his children. shaking up the nfl. and show in the sky. the rocket launch in florida and the mysterious light streaking across the sky, hundreds of miles away. good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us on this sunday. i'm linsey davis. breaking news as we come on the air. a massive potentially historic storm slamming the center of the country. dumping several feet of snow. thousands of flights canceled or delayed. whiteout conditions paralyzing travel. interstate highways shut down. many roads impassable. the same system sparking a tornado outbreak in the south. at least 14 twisters spotted in the last 24 hours. it's causing widespread destruction in the texas panhandle. the powerful, slow-moving storm is now heading east. and a new storm system is right behind it. rob marciano leads us off from colorado. >> reporter: tonight, with just six days until spring, a monster winter storm is wreaking havoc across the rockies and northern plains. in colorado, high winds triggering blizzard warnings. the intense snowfall raising more avalanche warnings in the mountains. winds have been slamming in the foothills just outside of boulder, there are drifts past my waist. just incredible amounts of snow. multiple highways forced to shut down. all runways at denver's airport also shut down for a time. >> holy crap, look at that. >> reporter: farther south, in the warm sector, tornadoes. this one outside of lubbock, sending debris skyward. another one crossing interstate 27, south of amarillo. from the ground and from above, all kinds of damage. this cell phone tower knocked to the ground. homes with roofs ripped to shreds. miraculously, no injuries reported in these severe storms. >> so good to hear that no one was hurt. let's get right to rob. what is next for the storm? >> reporter: we still have a couple of hours to deal with here in colorado still snowy. two feet here. and blizzard warnings extending until midnight. the nofrtheast, windchills in te teens and single digits. and the storm will be in the plains tuesday and wednesday. looks like significant weather impacts here in this part of the country. another active week ahead. linsey? >> rob, thank you. next to the pandemic. nearly half of all states lifting restrictions. many people craving some semblance of normalcy. big crowds gathering in miami, where spring break is in full swing. many people not wearing masks. millions taking to the skies. the tsa expecting to screen 3 million people this weekend. california is one of the states mogy og restrictions. 25%. zohreen shah is in los angeles. >> reporter: tonight, miami spring breakers partying like there's no pandemic. st. patrick's day celebrations starting early in georgia and texas. >> we're here to have a good time. >> reporter: mostly maskless crowds, shoulder to shoulder. spilling out of bars on to streets. >> we're doing our best to social distance. but these guys have been cramped up for the last year. it's hard to say, no, you have to stay six feet back. >> reporter: a record number of travelers. 3 million flyers expected to pass through tsa checkpoints this weekend. >> since the whole pandemic thing, this is my first time. but, yes, i do feel comfortable. >> reporter: all of this, as at least two dozen states ease restrictions. dr. anthony fauci saying while the u.s. is heading in the right direction, cases are still too high to let our guard down. >> don't spike the ball on the 5 yard line. wait until you get into the end zone. >> reporter: in l.a. county, indoor dining, movie theaters, and gyms opening at limited capacity tomorrow. how much longer before you guys break even? >> it's going to take us a while to get back to normal. >> reporter: and tonight, our best path out of the pandemic is the vaccine. >> johnson & johnson, one shot, it's hit me right on time. >> reporter: the nation reporting nearly 3 million shots administered in a single day. more than 11% of adults fully vaccinated, including cellist yo-yo ma. giving a surprise concert in massachusetts after receiving his second shot. >> soothing souls there. zohreen shah joins us from los angeles. and dr. fauci saying the cdc could soon reverse its social distancing guidelines. >> reporter: yeah, linsey. this could be a game changer for school reopenings. dr. fauci saying new data suggests that the six feet guidance could go down to three, and he says the new recommendation could come soon. linsey? >> zohreen, thank you. and we're seeing a surge of covid cases in europe. dr. fauci saying it could be a cautionary tale for americans. crowds in many italian cities enjoying a last day of freedom ahead of tight restrictions tomorrow. this is in response to the soaring case numbers in parts of europe. france is moving some people outside of paris, because hospital beds are becoming too scarce. back in this country, new york governor andrew cuomo ignoring calls for him to resign. both new york senators and most prominent new york democrats are telling the three-term governor it's time for him to step aside. here's trevor ault. >> reporter: tonight, new york lawmakers not mincing words. governor andrew cuomo has to go. >> he should resign. he should resign. >> it's clear that governor cuomo has lost the confidence of his governing partners, as well as the people of new york. >> reporter: but cuomo has refused. apologizing for any comments that may have been misinterpreted, but denying any misconduct. with seven women accusing him of inappropriate behavior, as well as allegations of sexual harassment from several of them, and a separate information into whether his administration altered reporting of covid deaths. a charge he also denies. >> he's literally in the way of us saving lives right now. >> reporter: some are asking for the investigations to play out. but even democrats who have stopped short of calling for his resignation are wondering if he can still lead. >> the governor should look inside his heart. he loves new york. to see if he can govern effectively. >> reporter: president biden asked late today if cuomo should step down. >> i think the investigation is under way, and we'll see what it brings us. >> reporter: larry schwartz telling the paper he discussed the allegations against the governor with officials, asking if they would wait for the findings of the investigation before drawing any conclusions. "the post" reporting at least one official has filed an ethics complaint. fearing their county's vaccine supplies would suffer if schwartz didn't like their answer. schwartz says he never mentioned the vaccine, and did nothing wrong. the governor's office says schwartz has been volunteering for the state for a year, and any suggestion he acted in any way unethically is false. linsey? >> trevor, thank you. and house speaker nancy pelosi is now calling the growing number of minors flocking to the u.s./mexico border a humanitarian crisis. president joe biden is facing pressure to address the situation. recent drone footage shows thousands of young people arriving. fema is being ordered to assist. here's maryalice parks. >> reporter: tonight, new drone footage showing from the sky the worsening situation on the ground at the u.s./mexico border. these lines at an immigration processing site, buses full. more than 4,200 children detained, another nearly 9,000 in shelters. facilities at capacity and overwhelmed. the situation made worse with covid concerns. overnight, fema ordered to assist in caring for unaccompanied minors. >> the children held right now, they don't belong there. that is not a place for holding children. that is a place for adult men. >> reporter: republicans quick to blame president biden for the surge. >> the border patrol and everybody in texas has known this is coming. they're finally stepping up and providing the resources they need. but it's a day late. and it's really far short. >> reporter: even biden's own border czar admitting the change in administration could have played a role. >> surges tend to respond to hope. and there was a significant hope for a more humane policy after four years of, you know, pent-up demand. >> reporter: now biden facing growing pressure from within his own party, too, to address the situation. >> it's unacceptable. and we're seeing the consequence of four years of dismantling every system in place to address this with humanity and compassion. >> maryalice, president biden sent a delegation to the border, and republicans are heading there tomorrow. >> reporter: that's right. kevin mccarthy and other congressional republicans are headed to texas tomorrow. the white house has not said whether president biden will also make a trip. >> maryalice, thank you. more americans are starting to see their stimulus checks arrive. most will also see an increase in their child tax credit. a major benefit for those who are still struggling with the economic impact of the pandemic. elizabeth shulze takes us through the math. >> reporter: tonight, relief for struggling americans. some with their $1,400 stimulus checks already hitting bank accounts. >> i couldn't believe i got it already. >> it's a huge help for my household. >> reporter: the irs now updating the get my payment tool on its website. those eligible can track when and how their payments will arrive. the massive covid relief package, of particular benefit to families. increasing the child tax credit to $3,600 a year for every child under the age of 6, and $3,000 for kids up to age 17. an estimated 93% of children will benefit from the expanded credit. expected to lift more than 4 million out of poverty. the economic aid, a weight off the shoulders of this wyoming single mom. her 7-year-old daughter, recently diagnosed with anxiety and panic disorder. medical bills piling up. >> i'll be able to help my daughter. and she'll be able to know that we can get the help that she needs. >> reporter: linsey, the irs says you should keep checking that payment tracker regularly for updates. and even if it says the status is not available, they will keep processing the checks in the coming weeks. linsey? >> some much needed relief. elizabeth, thank you. tonight, tens of thousands in jackson, mississippi, are still without drinkable water. it's been almost a month, and many residents are at their wits' end. the crisis was sparked by last month's brutal cold and storms. here's elwyn lopez. >> reporter: tonight, growing frustration for tens of thousands in jackson, mississippi. like sheila davis, now on day 26 without safe running water. >> this is my water. i use bottled for everything. because it's not safe. this is not the way we're supposed to live. >> reporter: a mid-february cold snap knocking out water supply to most of the mississippi capital. the majority of its taps no longer dry. but more than 40,000 households and businesses still under a boil water notice. many, like eric smith, spending their days scouring the city for water distribution sites. >> it's a hassle, but it's worth t. it's free water. >> reporter: as the crisis continues into a new week, local chefs like nick wallace keep stepping up to the stove. cooking up thousands of meals to feed those still struggling. >> your heart has to be bigger than what your wallet is. because it's not a money game. >> reporter: officials are collecting more than 100 water samples to be tested. the first step in lifting that boil water notice. linsey?
