High. Biden saying, america is back. New this morning. Meghan, the duchess of sussex revealing she suffered a miscarriage in a powerful New York Times essay and what we now know about the surprising moment she said that helped her move forward. Not many people have asked if im okay. Black friday frenzy. Where you can find the biggest savings starting right now with so many deals online, how to play it smart and save big in a Holiday Shopping season like none other. And the grammy nominations are in. Women dominate the top categories, beyonce comes out on top with a recordbreaking nine nominations. The weeknd blindsided calling the awards corrupt after being shut out. Despite having one of the most acclaimed albums of the year. The backlash this morning. I felt like in an old cardigan and taylor swift joins us live, the superstar releasing her new film overnight, shes telling us all about it this morning only on gma. And good morning, america. We hope you are ready for thanksgiving. We cannot wait to talk to taylor swift and welcome to janai norman. Good to see you. So excited to be here. Trying to figure out who i need to thank for being here the same morning that taylor is here. A lot of news. First, take a live look at hartsfieldjackson airport in atlanta. Millions around the country are hitting the roads and skies for thanksgiving despite warnings from Health Experts to stay home. Thats a startling image right there. This as the daily death toll topping 2,000 for the First Time Since may. Dr. Anthony fauci is joining us with the latest on what we need to know ahead of the holiday weekend, but gio benitez is joining us from Laguardia Airport with more on the thanksgiving exodus. Good morning, gio. Reporter hey, cecilia, good morning. We are definitely seeing a lot more travelers today. This is exactly what the head of tsa told us would happen but now this Morning Health officials are very concerned. Take a look. This could be one of the busiest travel days of the season with air travelers already breaking records during the pandemic, more than 4 Million People hitting the skies since friday. Now tsa administrator David Pekoske telling abc news he expects even more travelers. Between 900 and a million passengers on the wednesday before thanksgiving and probably the busiest day of the entire weekend is going to be the sunday, the return day. Reporter tsa lines have long been considered one of the riskiest parts of flying, so many people packed together touching those bins. Pekoske tells us this week they have opened more lanes. The idea is to allow passengers to social distance while theyre queued up for tsa screening. Reporter sara is flying from ohio to pennsylvania to be with her family. Cincinnati and philly airports relatively empty. People in masks. Just made it through security and it took me about five minutes. Reporter but social distancing at some airports can be hard. Just look at these images, and dont expect those empty middle seats on most flights. You may see some crowded planes like this. With thanksgiving around the corner, testing sites across the country have cars lining up for hours as families hope to test negative before gathering together. But Health Officials are warning against a false sense of security. If youre negative today, you could be positive by thanksgiving or friday. Reporter this as the covid crisis worsens across the country. Another day of record hospitalizations and for the First Time Since may, deaths surpassed 2,000 per day. The midwest getting hit hard, montana, idaho, iowa, kansas and missouri now seeing the most positive tests. Montana at an 18. 71 positivity rate. A glimmer of hope in iowa where just last week, the governor implemented a mask mandate. The state seeing a slight decline in the number of new cases. And the cdc considering reducing the quarantine period for people exposed to the virus. Instead of 14 days, down to 7 to 10 days. The government hoping the change will get more people to comply. And we know about 48 Million People are expected to drive for the holiday. If you are doing that, the cdc says that you should go ahead and only drive with members of your own household, and try to make as few stops as possible to limit exposure, george. Thanks, gio. We are joined now by dr. Anthony fauci. Dr. Fauci, thank you for joining us again this morning. You know, were approaching thanksgiving with the highest death rates, highest caseloads, hospitalizations in months. Whats your final message to the public as we head into this holiday . Well, the final message is to do what weve been saying for some time, to the extent possible, keep the gatherings the indoor gatherings as small as you possibly can. We all know how difficult that is, because this is such a beautiful traditional holiday but by making that sacrifice, youre going to be preventing people from getting infected because we know for sure that people who are without symptoms innocently with no malintention at all goes to a party or goes to a gathering and gets together indoors, you let your guard down and you obviously have to take a mask off if you are eating or drinking. Try to avoid that as much as possible. The sacrifice now could save lives and illness and make the future much brighter as we get through this because, george, well get through this. Vaccines are right on the horizon. If we can just hang in there a bit longer and continue to do the simple mitigation things that were talking about all the time, the masks, the distancing, the avoiding crowds, particularly indoor, if we do those things, were going to get through. Thats my final plea before the holiday. What we dont want to see is yet another surge superimposed upon the surge that you just described which well realize 3, 3 1 2 weeks from now if we dont do these Public Health thing. What do you make of this report, the New York Times yesterday said early data suggests small indoor gatherings are not driving this current spread . What do you make of that . Is it right . Yeah, i think what the confusion is, george, is that when you look at the surges, it is still dominated by larger gatherings, by people who are in indoor places, by bars where people congregate, but when you account for that, there still is transmission among gatherings that appear to be relatively innocent. I mean, if you can go for a small gathering, thats certainly not dominating things, but when you subtract the ones that are really dominating, you see that there is a risk when people do indoor things. Now, i dont mean two, three, four people in a room. Were talking about when people might have a modest size and let their guard down so you dont want people to think that thats the dominating feature of it. But it certainly can contribute to it and thats what we want to do. When you stay away from the bars and when you stay away from the big congregant settings, there still is a danger if you bring people into the home who are not part of the immediate household. There is a risk there. We are also learning that the cdc is considering shortening the quarantine time for people exposed to someone who has a positive test. Does that make sense . Well, you know why it makes sense, george, because when you have the full extent of the quarantine time, it makes people reluctant to get tested because they dont want to say, well, im tested and now i have to stay out of work, i may lose money, im not getting subsidized and i might even lose my job. So if you balance the two, shortening a bit to make it more reasonable for people to say, if i get tested and im positive, im not going to be out for a full two weeks, so it might be that the balance, the better part of this equation would be to encourage people more to get tested so that theyre not out of whatever it is that they need to be their job, their employment, their source of income. Thats the real reason for it. One encouraging sign were seeing is the easing of lockdowns in europe. What does that tell us . Well, you know, what the europeans theyre usually a couple of weeks ahead of us, you know, at every phase of this, so what happens now that they start to plateau, so theyre pulling back down on their lockdowns. We will almost certainly, or may already start seeing it, for those areas, those states, those cities that are fully mitigating with the things that i just mentioned, youll start to see a plateauing hopefully to come down. The one thing we do not want is if we get a surge now, george, over thanksgiving, well have that slow bump plateau, and then slope up again well see in a few weeks which is the reason why were trying so hard to get the message for people to be careful over this thanksgiving holiday. And, of course, likely to see the vaccine start to be distributed in december, sometime in december, but were still seeing hesitancy about the vaccines, taking the vaccine even from healthcare workers. Does that concern you . Well, it concerns me greatly, george, and thats the reason why weve got to continue to get that message out that the process by which the vaccines were made were a standard process that was rapid because of exquisite scientific advances and the investment of an extraordinary amount of money. It did not compromise safety and it did not compromise scientific integrity, and the decision whether it works, i. E. , efficacious and its safe, is going to be made by independent bodies of people who, in fact, have no allegiance to an administration or to a company. Thats what the public needs to understand, that the process is transparent and its independent, and we just got to keep getting that message out, because it would really be terrible if we have, which we do, three now and maybe more highly efficacious vaccines and people dont take it because that will be the solution, george, a combination of Public Health measures and a safe and effective vaccine. We could crush this outbreak exactly the way we did years ago with smallpox, with polio and with measles, it is doable. The president ial transition is formally under way. Have you had any contact with the president elect . Not with the president elect personally, but with his staff. Ive been in contact with ron klain, nothing substantive in the sense of plans but just Touching Base with me telling me that were going to be talking about this very soon now that the transition is in process. Dr. Fauci, thank you for your time this morning. Hope you have a great thanksgiving and i know this has been a challenging year for you. I just want to thank you on behalf of everybody here at gma for always being so accessible and giving your best guidance to the public. Thank you, george, and all the best to you and your family. You know, dr. Fauci has served every president since ronald reagan. I think we can expect that to continue under president elect biden. And that final plea from him, so important. Well turn to the latest on the transition. President elect joe biden set to make a thanksgiving day address and rachel scott joining us. Rachel, the transition finally, finally in full swing. Reporter cecilia, good morning. Yeah, it took 16 days, but president elect joe bidens team is now in contact with every single federal agency. President trump still refusing to concede an election that he lost but the transition process is now fully under way. Joe biden saying that the chief of staff from the two administrations are now in touch. Hell soon start receiving National Security briefings and his team is also in touch with operation warp speed on plans to roll out that Coronavirus Vaccine when it is made available and joe biden wasting no time there rolling out his first picks for his cabinet. Meanwhile, President Trump was back at the white house. He announced a lastminute News Conference that only lasted 64 seconds and he took no questions and came before the cameras touting a stock market that he repeatedly insisted would crash if joe biden were elected. The reality is the stock market just hit that new high and wall street analysts say the transition helped fuel it. 64second briefing as you said and we havent seen much of the president since election day, rachel, but he is going to leave the white house today to take a trip to pennsylvania. Reporter yeah. Sources are telling us that President Trump does plan to head to pennsylvania today to meet with a handful of republican state lawmakers. We are told this is being pushed by the president s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and that overnight close aides to the president tried to convince him out of it. Look, this would all be for show. The president and his allies have lost 30 cases in court. A pennsylvania judge throwing out their case there for lack of any credible evidence and pennsylvania has already certified joe bidens victory, cecilia. There on those legal challenges. Thank you so much. Janai . Turning now to the grammy nominations and the backlash this morning after some perceived snubs. The weeknd calling them corrupt after being shut out and women dominating the categories. Kaylee hartung has more from los angeles. Kaylee, good morning. Reporter hey, good morning, janai. So it turns out you can create music that makes history with its streaming popularity. Even be invited to perform in the super bowl halftime show, but then be shut out entirely from musics biggest night. Im heartless reporter this morning, the weeknd, anything but pleased with the grammys. Ooh im blinded by the light i cant sleep until i feel your touch reporter the canadian artist completely shut out of the nominations after releasing one of the biggest and most praised albums of the year, not to mention the longest running top ten hit in billboard history. The artist harshly criticizing the awards writing, the grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency. He had a massive album with after hours and the song blinding lights is the sound of 2020. So to have a song like that that is not recognized by musics biggest night is shocking. Reporter overnight, the academys interim president acknowledging he was surprised too saying in a statement, his contributions to the Music Community and broader world are worthy of everyones admiration, but adding, unfortunately, every year there are fewer nominations than the number of deserving artists. Joining the weeknd in club snub this year, halsey, selena gomez, the killerz, luke combs and bob dylan and the chicks. Reporter and then theres justin bieber, puzzled after scoring three nominations in the pop category for his changes album writing, it is undeniably, unmistakably, an r b album. To be clear i absolutely love pop music. It just wasnt what i set out to make this time around. But it was another good year for female artists. Dominating the top category for a third year in a row. Reporter with beyonce reigning supreme with her recordbreaking nine grammy nominations. And speaking of breaking records, taylor swift is back with a vengeance. After being left of the awards show last year, shes got six nominations now, including song of the year. Her fifth nomination for that award more than any other female songwriter in grammy history. Back with a vengeance, indeed. Kaylee, thank you so much. Speaking of taylor swift coming up in our next half hour we will be talking with taylor swift in a gma exclusive. Look at that, that will not just impact travel but your life. That would be a reported severe thunderstorm that could have been a tornado. Theyll do the survey today in arlington, texas, so highly populated and inside the car, can you imagine walking out and seeing debris from the storm making its way into your car. Breaking all the windows, so thats the storm that is associated with this cold front and warm front.
