Announcer now from abc7, live breaking news. Were following breaking news in san jose tonight. Two people have died after a stabbing at a church. The church was sheltering Homeless Individuals. Good evening. Im j. R. Stone. Dion lim is off. Well get right to that breaking news in the south bay but also want to let you know were on top of another big story tonight with covid19. Governor newsom and his family are quarantining after some of their children were exposed to the virus. First lets get to that scene in san jose. Abc7 News Reporter luz pena is live at Grace Baptist Church this evening. Luz, what can you tell us about what happened earlier . Reporter j. R. , a devastating scene here in san jose. Were learning more details as the time goes by. We know several people were stabbed. At least two people have passed away from stab wounds. San jose Police Confirmed no Church Services were being conducted at the time of the stabbing, but we do know several Homeless Individuals were brought into the church to get them out of the cold. Now, no confirmation yet of any arrest. This is homicide number 40 and 41 of 2020. San jose police are still investigating. Turning now to the coronavirus pandemic, Governor Newsom revealed in just the past hour that he and his family will quarantine for 14 days after a possible exposure to covid19. In a series of tweets, newsom said three of his children had been exposed to a chp officer who had tested positive for the virus. He says he and his wife did not have direct interaction with the officer. Newsom also said his entire family tested negative today. Still the governor says to be consistent with local guidance, they will quarantine for 14 days. The news comes days after one of newsoms children began quarantining due to a possible exposure at a private school. A look at the numbers now. According to state data, there were more than 14,000 new cases of coronavirus on saturday. That makes it one of three recordbreaking days this week. The states average daily number of coronavirus cases has tripled since october. The head of the u. S. Effort to produce a Coronavirus Vaccine says the first immunizations could happen on december 11th. Pfizer recently announced that the vaccine appears 95 effective. Now, your health is one of the main things were focused on here at abc7 with an aim to build a better bay area amid this pandemic. Four days after thanksgiving or before thanksgiving, that is, hundreds waited in line in San Franciscos Mission district to get tested at a popup test site before heading to san jose tonight. Abc7 News Reporter luz pena spoke to the lead organizers who are also trying to collect data about this virus. Today we had a little bit north of 500 people that came out and got tested. We had lines as long as three blocks wrapped around the corner. Reporter in line, many essential workers like gonzalo moran. Nobody knows whos infected. Reporter moran is a painter. Hes gotten tested five times. His job requires it. Theyre asking you for proof . They dont ask me. They ask the company. They want to be sure people who work in those places, they are okay. Reporter city data shows that 50 of covid19 cases in San Francisco are among latinos even though this group only makes up 15 of the population. Leading this covid19 Testing Campaign are ucsf researchers. Low barrier means you can walk up. Its close by. You dont need an apartment. Reporter this doctor noticed that eight months after their first test site, latinos are less hesitant to tested now. We were out hire in april. It was all extremely new and there were many more unknowns. I think now one of the things that i think has gotten around and people know more frequently is you can be asymptomatic and have covid. I was there earlier tonight and talked with some travelers from really all over the country, some not so worried. Others taking all the precautions they can. Terminals at San Francisco International Airport are packed with people as we are now just days away from thanksgiving. Some taking all the precautions they can, and that includes this woman in a bodysuit. Its a little bit more busy than i expected or hoped it would be, but i had to travel for work, so i just suited up. Reporter this traveler didnt want to be identified but says she got her suit on amazon for 5. I have a baby, and i spend a lot of time with my parents who are 85 and 75, and its just not worth it. Reporter while not all of those we spoke with took a covid test, around half did, including this family heading to hawaii, who spoke of the challenges out there just to get a test, something hawaii officials are requiring for those traveling there. Need a doctor that then gets you covid test appointment. You have to do it 72 hours in advance of leaving on your flight. Reporter the cdc has recommended that people dont travel, but according to tsa, that did not stop more than a Million People who made their way through u. S. Airports last friday. And many we spoke with sunday say they are being cautious. Were comfortable traveling smaller distances. I had some concerns about it, but on the plane it wasnt as bad as i thought it was going to be. The planes are a little crowded, which is kind of concerning, but other than that, its fine. Reporter the woman wearing the body suit says her flight went well. She doesnt plan to take a covid test but does plan to quarantine. I feel really good. In here i brought a bunch of wipes, so im just going to wipe down my bags, and i dont feel like i really took that much of a risk honestly. She told me some people were looking at her, but she didnt care. For some perspective on that 1 million passengers that were screened friday by the tsa, that is the second highest total since october 18th, but its also down more than 1. 5 million passengers from a year ago. Sfo officers told me tonight that friday and saturday night crowds look comparable to what we saw before the pandemic. Now, tonight is the second night of a new effort to try to slow the spread in california. M. , and many nonessential workers were likely off the streets. Six bay area purple tier counties where covid rates are spiking are under a mandatory curfew between 10 00 p. M. And 5 00 a. M. Through december 21st. Santa clara county wants the public to call this covid hotline to report any curfew violators. South bay Police Agencies are tweeting the same number. We havent received any complaints here at the covid19 Center Emergency preparations center regarding the curfew. Reporter that could change as we head into the holiday season. Santa clara county still with one of the highest covid rates in the state. If we continue to see this increase at this rate, hospitals are going to reach their Maximum Capacity within three weeks. Reporter in neighboring San Mateo County, the numbers are better. It remains in red tier with no curfew. But thats where some people are getting confused. This is the spot where san mateo ends and Santa Clara County begins. So in other words, curfew. No curfew. I think its kind of stupid. If one has it, i think the other one should too. Theres a lot of movement between the two counties, and so it might make sense for both counties to have the curfew. Covid fatigue, its real. In the east bay, firefighters are still waiting to enter the berkeley Apartment Building where they contained a sixalarm fire. Crews were onscene putting out hot spots that had been flaring up this morning. The fire broke out at the building, which is under construction, just before 6 00 saturday night. The Berkeley Fire Department says the fire is still active. Nobody was inside. Neighboring Apartment Buildings were evacuated. The fire chief says it could be a while before they get inside. We had difficulty reaching the scene of the fire. Its burning near the center of the building. Were not sure of the stability, so we cant send anybody inside. We have been here since 6 00 last night, and we anticipate it could be as much as another 24 hours. City building inspectors are checking for damage in nearby buildings. At least one threestory Apartment Building has suffered water damage. Well, the cocreator of the als ice bucket challenge died sunday following his sevenyear battle with the disease. We could see some coastal drizzle, especially along the peninsula and perhaps even in the south bay, but thats about it. Well have lots of sunshine tomorrow afternoon. So overnight tonight well call it mainly clear in the north bay. Mostly cloudy, though, in the south bay. Again, theres that chance of that drizzle along the coastline of the peninsula. Mid30s to mid40s our starting temperatures as we get you into monday. Monday its a mostly sunny day, and temperatures pretty close to where we were today, upper 50s to mid60s. 62 the high in san jose. Dry the next 24 hours, and it looks like much of california, the next seven days will remain dry for the week ahead. You look at that storm track, it is so far north right now, pretty much over portland and seattle. Look at santa rosa, San Francisco, were not looking at any rainfall.
