Developing news right now a high rise fire forces San Francisco residents out of their homes overnight. Look at this video. You can see the flames shooting from the middle of the building at the Gateway Apartments. Now the fire broke out in the East Building on davis and washington and firefighters had to rescue and evacuate several people. Abc7 News Reporter Amy Hollyfield is joining us live there this morning. How many apartments are we talking about . Two dozen apartments damaged here . Yeah. Thats right. 23 apartments with damage. Three had fire damage. The others had smoke and water. They just cannot be lived in. Those people not in their homes. The fire started on the 11th floor. Thats a long way to go when youre trying to evacuate and escape a fire. Also a long way to get up to that fire when you have to fight it. Firefighters had to help people evacuate and haul that equipment up to the 11th floor. This is the east side of the Gateway Apartments off the embarcadero on davis circle. Firefighters say they got the call before 1 30 this morning. One resident described just the franticness of trying to evacuate. The fire alarm went off this morning after 1 00. For my unit, it sounded and then it stopped. I was going to go back to bed. But i could hear people going down the fire escape. The smoke was like a movie. You could not see down the hallway the smoke was so thick. Whats amazing, the majority of people im seeing, they all remembered to grab their masks. Even in an emergency situation everyone thinking about the coronavirus and being, you know, mindful of what our requirements are. Five people suffered from minor injuries. Firefighters have allowed everyone to return home except for those on the 11th floor and then one unit on the 12th floor. 23 units in total have damage and cannot be lived in. Residents from 30 units were displaced. Thankfully no one was physically hurt in that fire. A handful of people were treated for smoke inhalation and anxiety.
