mta looks at the surveillance video on a week by basis. >> we're able to take a look at the service on the streets from week to week to see how well the mask compliance is going. >> reporter: the sfmta also reported having trouble with a few passengers when told to mask up. according to their data from april to august 31st, this are 63 verbal altercations specifically dealing with masks and nine operators have been assaulted. one driver was struck several times with a wooden bat in july. >> there was a minute toiature involved, as well due to facial compliance or lack thereof. it's a scary situation, indeed. >> reporter: roger out transit workers union local 250 a believes many more drivers are not reporting passengers who don't compile to avoid any interruption to their bus route. >> we would like to see more assistance out there, boots on the ground in terms of people, workers, assisting us with more compliance. >> reporter: the sfmta says a few things are helping. it's mandatory for bus drivers to use the protective plexiglass barrier as seen in this video from the metro commission. >> we increased that throughout the city, crossing guards, transit inspectors as they come back in from doing other disaster service work are deployed. >> reporter: all of them received deescalation training. muni operators will start that training in the fall. lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> let's have a quick look now at where california stands with the coronavirus numbers. there were nearly 1700 new cases today. that's well below the daily average of about 3,000. another 28 people died from covid. the state's daily average has been around 80. the 14-day positivity rate is 2.7%. we haven't seen much flexuatiucn in that number the past several days. it's a good under yeindicator o transmission rate. state officials will require counties to bring down covid-19 rates in disadvantaged communities that have been harder hit by the pandemic. some have worried the new measure could slow down the state's reopening but could actually speed things up. chris nguyen explains why. >> reporter: the new equity met trick unveiled by the california department of public health will incentivize counties to decrease covid-19 infections by focussing on zip codes that include black, latino and pacific islander communities. >> we want our businesses and communities to qui nrnton. they want all death row inmates released. >> about two-thirds of prisoners inside have contracted covid. they have been on lockdown since march with limited access to medical needs. >> this summer governor newsom approved the release of 18,000 inmates to reduce the threat of covid-19 in state prisons. according to the california department of corrections, 1700 inmates are infected with the virus and 69 have died since the pandemic began. >> the national lawyers guild is joining a group of attorneys and legal workers calling for changes in the way santa rita jail deals with covid. the group says there are five major covid outbreaks at the jail since march. they are demanding the county health department assume control of medical care at the jail and implement a new testing protocol. the effort comes a day after the sheriff's office announces the formation of a covid compliance unit to ensure deputies wear masks. so how risky is something like a family gathering fire command center. one firefighter was taken to a hospital and the others were released back to the fire line. the glass fire is now 50% contained. a new damage assessment reveals 600 homes have been destroyed. 66,840 acres have burned. more than 21,000 structures are still threatened. the sonoma county sheriff's office says it doesn't expect to lift any evacuation orders there today. sky 7 we have two more tomorrow and thursday mainly because of poor air quality in the north bay but notice the greens are indicating good air quality is expected in virtually every other region the next two days and on friday and saturday if things stay as they are now, there will probably not be spare the air alerts. forecast animation shows lots of low clouds and fog pushing out over the bay and locally inland overnight, early tomorrow morning it will be hanging around during the morning commute and pull back to the coastline for the most part in the daytime tomorrow. overnight low temperatures will be mainly in the low to mid 50s. relatively seasonally cool night i guess you could call it and tomorrow highs will range from only 58 at half moon bay to 62 san francisco and 68 oakland. inland east bay around or above 80. down in the south bay mainly mid to upper 70s. north bay highs in the mid 70s, as well and as we skip ahead now to friday, notice we have a little rainfall system, rainmaker coming our way friday around midday or so it's expected to produce light rain into the afternoon hours and into the overnight hours on saturday. then a second wave is likely to swing through on saturday expected to produce rainfall. the forecast models are all over the place in terms of rain fall measurements but generally we're looking at maybe .15 to .2 or higher in san francisco. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. two more spare the air days tomorrow and thursday as the cooling continues. in fact, the coolest day of the forecast period will likely be
