Reporter after the president s positive diagnosis, there was an immediate concern about whether his rival, the 77yearold former Vice President , was exposed to the virus. Days before the two spent more than 90 minutes sparring on the debate stage. Some 13 feet apart without masks at times shouting over each other. Just 24 hours ago releasing new digital ads taking aim at biden, pushing baseless conspiracy theories about his debate performance. Whit . Rachel scott, thank you so much. Joining us now is our chief medical correspondent, dr. Jen ashton. Dr. Ashton, great to have you on this important and developing story this morning. Lets talk about some of these treatments first because the white house says President Trump was given a dose of remdesivir, the antiviral drug, as well as an experimental cocktail made by a Company Called regeneron. This is the antibody treatment. Were going to speak with one of the cofounders of that in just a moment. But give us a breakdown first of what these drugs do and how they could help the president. So, whit, first we have to characterize them under the umbrellas of their treatment modalities. So theres an immune therapy and then theres an antiviral therapy. Weve heard a lot about remdesivir, but the antibody cocktail made by regeneron given under compassionate use actually uses two types of synthetic antibodies, targets that spike protein and stops the virus from replicating. Ironically they just released preliminary data on september 29th. They looked at about 275 patients and they found that it actually lowered the viral load, improved symptoms and some encouraging results. And, of course, 275 patients, thats not a widescale study. So still learning a lot about that. We know the president has high risk factors when it comes to his age and weight and just the simple fact that hes a man. Based on all of that and the treatments that were learning about, what does that tell us about the severity of his illness . Well, whit, i think its really important youre hearing a lot of doctors making speculative comments. The only doctors who know specifically how the president s doing is his personal physician and now his medical team at walter reed. But every patient has risk factors. As you said, being a man, twice the mortality risk across every age group compared to women as proven by data pretty early on. Obesity, having a body mass index of 30 or greater, three times higher risk of requiring hospitalization. And then age being 74, five times higher risk of hospitalization. But as we weigh these risk factors clinically in medicine, we still take every patient as an individual. I want to ask you about the Ripple Effect here. We keep hearing about how Vice President pence, his wife, some others in the trump family and orbit have tested negative. But based on what we know about the incubation period does this in any way mean theyre out of the woods . It doesnt, whit, and thats whats really important right now. Even though were nine months into this pandemic, theres still a lot we dont know. We know that the average incubation period from time of exposure is 5. 2 days. We also know that in the presymptomatic stage, people can start shedding virus or be contagious 48 hours before the development of symptoms. That brings us around three days. So if youre exposed right now and an hour later you go to get a test, that could be in that latency period where you get a negative result and youre actually infected. So i asked dr. Fauci this question specifically. Do we know when the ideal time is . He said we really dont but based on the available data he would say day three, day four, day five. We have to remember every test can have false negatives, as well as false positives. So i would be betting that there will be a lot of testing in the white house circle in the days and weeks to come. Definitely something to watch in the coming days. Dr. Ashton, thank you so much. Well talk to you again in our next hour. Eva over to you. Joining us is george yancopoulos, president and chief scientific officer of regeneron, that company that makes the experimental treatment given to the president. Thank you so much for being with us this morning. Sure, eva. Talk to us about this treatment. I know its still in trials. But whats the data showing you . How effective is this . Well, importantly i should tell you this is not some unvalidated approach. We pioneered the technologies to deliver this cocktail over the last 20 years and it has an impressive track record of delivery, some of the worlds most important and safest medicines. We actually even use this technology to fight another epidemic, ebola and hopefully later this month it will be the first treatment against ebola ever to be approved by the fda. So this is a tried and true approach. And, as your own dr. Jen ashton just described, we just released some preliminary data from our ongoing trial, but the data was quite convincing that we had true antiviral activity in patients who had the highest viral levels who were at the most danger. We showed that we could reduce the virus levels by about 99 in just a few days and obviously because its this race between the virus and your own immune system, anything that can help your immune system lower the viral levels helps you win that race, helps you beat this virus. So a lot of people are curious. How did this treatment reach the president . Did the fda sign off on it . Yeah. There is a standard approach. Its called the compassionate use approach. Its intended to deliver experimental medicines that have some evidence but have not been approved to patients who are in high need and need them. This mechanism has been in place for decades. Weve actually been asked before. This has to be initiated by the patients physician, in this case, the doctor the president s team of doctors, they have to initiate the process. They have to get approval from the fda for this. And then they had to work with us so that we could deliver the medicine to the white house. And real quickly, yes or no question, is the first lady taking this as well . You know, we cant comment on anything that hasnt been described publicly or announced publicly by the white house. All we can do is confirm that we did deliver the medicine to the white house and as the white house has said, the president received this treatment. Well, we appreciate i should mention that small numbers of other individuals, their doctors have requested this cocktail before and weve delivered it in a similar manner, but this is not a mechanism thats intended to widely distribute this drug to lots of people. George yancopoulos, we appreciate your time this morning. Thank you so much. Dan . Lets switch it up and
