I cant say i know much about basketball, but i can say once that man goes to a team, that team goes to the finals. Right. And between 2000 and 2015, he paid taxes only five times because most years he reported losing millions more than he earned. You made what, 250 million in the last year . 605 million. Okay. Reporter while the New York Times says it will not publish the actual records to avoid revealing its sources, the article reveals among the writeoffs trump has taken over the years are more than 70,000 for haircuts while on the apprentice. Nearly 96,000 paid for ivanka trumps favorite hair and makeup artist. Approximately 2 million for trump and don trump jr. s Legal Defense for the russia inquiry. Trump reportedly racked up 26 million in unexplained consulting fees. I made a lot of money. Reporter according to the times, the documents unearthing transactions that could be seen as conflicts of interest, including payments from foreign officials staying at resorts like maralago and other properties that the president never divested from. In response to the allegations, trump slammed the New York Times overnight. Fake news. Its totally fake news. Made up, fake. We went through the same stories, you could have asked me the same questions four years ago, i had to litigate this and talk about it. Totally fake news. No, actually, i paid tax. The first hearing could take place october 12th, setting the stage for a final confirmation vote just days before the election. President trump and former Vice President joe biden will face off on stage tomorrow night for the first time. Debate number one is set to take place in cleveland. The president is demanding that biden take a drug test, suggesting biden has been helped by performanceenhancing drugs. The biden camp fired back saying, quote, if the president thinks his best case is made in urine, he can have at it. Abc news will have three hours of debate coverage beginning tomorrow at 8 00 p. M. Investigators say the suspect accused the victim of cutting in front of him while they waited in line. The two men argued and they went separately to the parking lot when witnesses say they heard gunshots. Turning to prepping your home for the cold weather and how best to protect your family from the spread of the coronavirus. I spoke earlier with dr. Darian sutton. Dr. Sutton, thank you so much for joining us this morning. Lets start with the big headlines from this weekend. Were close to 1 Million Deaths worldwide. 33 states are seeing an increase in cases. In wisconsin, more than 27 of tests are coming back positive. That number ideally should be in the low single digits. The respected university of washington forecasters warn of a major winter surge. Not a lot of good news. Whats your take on where things stand . Its distressing. When that number comes up that high, it means three things. Number one, this virus is very present and persistent. Number two, our behaviors are likely accelerating its spread. The third is many people who are likely sick or symptomatic are the only people getting tested in that situation, so its likely there are many cases that continue to go undetected. A new study shows about 9 of the country has been exposed to the coronavirus. Thats a long way from herd immunity to the virus. Does that put even more pressure on the race for a vaccine . Given the wealth and resources of the United States, i consider us discussing the use of herd immunity via natural infection as a failure in terms of our response to this pandemic. Herd immunity is quite complicated. Although a vaccine could provide help, theres still many variables to be answered. Number one, the effectiveness of this vaccine, availability to provide it to everyone and participation are questions for answered, and the continuing question of waning antibody levels on those who have already been naturally infected. We still have a lot of things to be answered in terms of herd immunity and vaccine use, but there are tools we know to be effective. That includes wearing a mask, socially distancing, providing accessible testing to everyone. Those are key traits that we can use and are honestly better than any known treatment or vaccine that we currently have. The coldest air of the season is hitting much of the midwest and parts of south. As more people head indoors, what can be done to keep the virus at bay . Protection does not have to be complicated or expensive. I advise the same thing to all of my patients. Making sure to take caution around those who you dont live with by wearing a mask. Washing your hands and socially distancing. Avoiding indoor environments that have closed circulation like air conditioning or heating. Making sure to get tested if you are symptomatic. These are key things that we need to continue doing to prevent this virus. And i know that is extremely exhausting, but we have to make sure that we remain vigilant as this virus is very much present. Our thanks to dr. Sutton, who kept hammering that message weve been hearing since march, wash your hands, remain six feet apart if you can, wear a mask. He says thats still the best way to protect ourselves in this climate. I saw a story over the weekend about what types of weather are good for, you know if its sunny, then yeah, go outside, keep a social distance. If its overcast, cloudy, those are times where you could be more susceptible to getting a virus. So Pay Attention to those things. So much to think about. The date is almost october 1st, yall. Coming up, the history that was made sunday at the washington browns game. It happened both on the field and the sidelines. The heat eliminate the Boston Celtics in six games. Next up, the los angeles lakers. That means lebron james past will meet his present for the nba crown. Miami beat boston 125113 to take the Eastern Conference Finals in six games. The heat is back in the finals for the First Time Since 2014, lebron james last season in south beach. We love a good story, especially in sports. Lebron james led the lakers back to the championship round for the First Time Since 2010 on saturday night. Game one of the finals is wednesday. All games are right here on abc. Cant wait. Turning now to football and the game in cleveland that just made nfl history. The matchup between the browns and washington was definitely one for the record books. Stuff she does behind the scenes is incredible. Then just the significance of having the women in those positions today i think is a very big deal i want to shine a light on. Reporter callie herself tweeting, what a day for football, what a day for those up next, humbled. Jennifer king saying on sunday, this is why representation matters. Its hard to fathom when youve never seen it. Today girls are seeing it all over this field. Pretty cool, you guys. Got to love it. I believe it was 2015 when jen walter was the first coach for the arizona cardinals. Since then theyve seen more and more women. And i believe when denver plays next, theyre going to have three female assistant coaches. So talk about breaking the glass ceiling. Yeah. And opening the floodgates, we love to see it. Breaking barriers, so amazing, pretty cool. Coming up, the man who picked up a chunk of glass at a state park. Turns out it was actually a 9carat diamond. Well tell you where this happened next. Kicking off this happened with a very, very shiny object. Also a segment i call god, i see what you do for other people. A man was in an Arkansas State park when he found a 9carat diamond. Guess where he found it . Where . Crater diamond state park. He thought it was glass. I guess he was already looking for diamonds, and its not uncommon. He put it in his pocket, like, this is a cool piece of glass, ill save it for later. Until he goes to the Diamond Discovery Center that is at the state park, and they were like, oh, yeah. You found a good one. They were like, this happened, you about to be rich. He started crying. They said, he teared up. I would have been bawling. Yes. He works as a bank branch manager, and he said, i was in complete shock. You know what would make me tear up . When Something Like this happened to an arborist. Did i pronounce that arborist . This happened, i learned how to say arborist. Thats it, thats a segment. The person who deals with trees and greenery and stuff. You have to look at this video. You see the man up there on that palm tree that apparently whoa and it goes, whoop they did not pay that man enough. He was trying to cut it down because people in the neighborhood thought it was going to fall and be a danger to everyone. Oh, no. And this is a scene out of a cartoon. You remember when the cat is trying to chase the bird or whatever . Then this happened . Guess what . This also happened. The minute it stopped, he keeps cutting. No does he have Life Insurance for this job . Yeah, i would think so. I thought window washing was dangerous. No, thank you. Also, this happened. A driver said, i got to transport this greenhouse, im just going to throw it on the roof of the car in the u. K. It aint no problem. Yeah, its on the roof of that car right there in front of you. Nice little frame of a greenhouse going down the road in london. I dont know, its in the uk, i dont know if its in london. Clearly, this man whos filming it thought it was weird. Im just like, listen, you got to do what you got to do. Right, definitely. My toyota used to carry a lot of things. Also, this happened. I love a good soldier Surprise Homecoming reunion with the parent. And then take a look at this. Weve got United States army soldier from North Carolina right here. Weve got to get right to that bombshell report on President Trumps taxes, detailing how little he allegedly paid over the last 20 years. Records obtained by the New York Times show the president paid just 750 in federal income taxes the year he was elected, and the same amount the following year. The report claims the president is beset by financial losses and hundreds of millions of dollars in debt. Abcs Andrew Dymburt starts us off. Reporter President Trump has refused for years to release his tax returns, and hes facing new scrutiny over his finances while in office. The New York Times obtaining over two decades of tax return data for President Trump and his Business Organization showing he paid just 750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 750 more his first year in the white house. Abc news has not seen the documents cited by the New York Times. The president pressed on the report. Totally fake news. No. Actually, i paid tax. And youll see that as soon as my tax returns are its under order. Theyve been under order for a long time. Reporter he has bragged about not paying taxes. I have legally used the tax laws to my benefit. And to the benefit of my company, my investors, and my employees. I mean, honestly, i have brilliantly i have brilliantly used those laws. Reporter and defying the decadeslong tradition for president ial candidates to be transparent about their records. According to the times, the president has paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the last 15 years. And the selfproclaimed millionaire is hemorrhaging cash, according to the report. Money, money, money reporter revenue from the apprentice is running out, and the times reports lobbyists and foreign officials paid top dollar at Trump Properties like his maralago resort and washington hotel, transactions that could be seen as conflicts of interest as the president did not divest from those businesses when taking office. It reports profits at maralago rose after trump announced his candidacy, the president bringing in 6 million in initiation fees for the exclusive club in 2016. You have to understand that when americans read that you may have paid only a few hundred dollars in federal income tax per year, that seems very low for someone whos a billionaire. It will all be revealed. Its going to come out. When . After the order is after the im being theyre doing their assessment. Weve been negotiating for a long time. Reporter abc news reached out to the white house for comment. They referred us to the Trump Organization. The Trump Organization telling the New York Times, quote, most if not all of the facts appear to be inaccurate. The president , meanwhile, likely to face more questions on this in the days to come. Kenneth, mona . Andrew, thank you. The Biden Campaign released a video highlighting the thousands of dollars in federal taxes that teachers, firefighters, and other average americans pay every year. And the campaign is now selling stickers on its website that say, i paid more income taxes than donald trump. We are now joined by abcs senior editorial producer John Santucci whos covered the Trump Campaign since 2015. John, lets jump right into it. What stands out as most surprising to you in this New York Times story . Theres a lot in here, mona. First, the fact that donald trump for the year that he was on the campaign trail and the first year he entered the white house, according to the times, only paid 750 in federal income tax. Second, that from the times records, they obtained about 15 years of documents, they claim. 10 of those 15 years, according to the times, the president paid no federal income tax whatsoever. And for the first time, mona, we actually learned something about that audit that donald trump has talked about for years. And its based off of a nearly 73 million return he received. The irs is saying it was too much, trumps been fighting it. And whats interesting is that if he loses the outcome of that audit, he could have to pay the federal government nearly 100 million in penalties and fines. And john, youve covered the president since he first launched his campaign. How do you think hell fight back against this, and do you think it will hurt him in the long run . I think you saw what the president did sunday night in the briefing room. Anything he wants to knock down is given the stamp of fake news. But on this one its going to be quite hard. When an average american who makes 20,000 a year, they pay 750 a year in federal income tax, thats going to be hard for donald trump to hit the campaign trail and say hes out there for the little guy. Especially where this campaign is being fought out in the rust belt. The debate tomorrow night, what are you expecting . I think this is going to be a brutal debate. I think for Many Americans its going to be a time youre going to get to make a decision. Most of the country, according to our new abc News Washington post poll, is decided as to whom theyre voting for. For those who are on the fence, i think were going to learn a lot tuesday night. Our thanks to John Santucci. Catch abc news debate coverage starting at 8 00 eastern tomorrow night.
