Kelly welcome back, everybody. You know, these days, ryan, ryan seacrest, you. Ryan tell me. Kelly [laughing] you may have to interview for your next job over video conference. Did you know that . Ryan yes, i mean, thats kinda like how we interview for every job, on a camera. Kelly yeah. Well, yeah. I guess weyeah. But i mean literally over a computer screen. Ryan like zoom, yeah. Kelly so with tips on virtual interviews, please welcome back linkedins Catherine Fisher. Hi hi, good morning. Kelly catherine, how do you suggest we prepare for our virtual interviews . Well, the first thing you wanna do is test your tech, and so hopefully my pictures coming through clear, because i was testing my tech all morning. Make sure that you really understand how to use the video conferencing, that you know how to mute your line, how you unmute your line. What you dont wanna do is spend a lotta time fumbling around. You wanna be thinking and focusing about how you wanna answer those questions, and you dont wanna be distracted. Ryan you know, we are doing this on a skype right now and theres no audience, there can be a delay, its a very different dynamic. Do you suggest that you practice the delay, that you practice humor, you dont use humor . How do you make it go smoothly . You know, it is about having a lot of practice and really, you know, if you can, having a friend do a test run with you to check your connection to make sure you know how to use all the different bells and whistles of these video conferencing. And, you know, if it doesnt go so well, if you start having, you know, issues with your videohopefully, im not right nowthat there is a lot of forgiveness, and so just making sure, just take a deep breath, and its gonna be okay. Kelly and setting up our camera shot is very crucial, correct, because when we first started doing this, i found that i looked like i was in the blair witch project, and over time, we figured out a way to sort ofits a lot of trial and error, because we started working this way really on the fly, we were not expecting it. And so, um, you know. Yeah. The challenges werei mean, so myriad. So what do you recommend for people . Getting that setup is really important. It used to be that you just would have to, you know, worry about how you were gonna answer the questions and what you were gonna wear, and now you have to worry about, is the lighting good, is the camera in the right position . Where to look. So some good rules of thumb is make sure that youre not backlit, cause you dont want that weird silhouette look. So make sure that you have, you know, one of those really easy to buy ring lights. You can just stick it right on your computer. Make sure that youre arms distance away from your computer and that the cameras pointing eye level and that cause you really wanna, like, fill the frame. So just having some of those, you know, tips in mind, youll look and feel great. Ryan and eye contact is important. Sometimes i struggle on the phone to figure out where the camera is. Kelly we cant tell. We have no idea. Ryan like kellys here. Kelly we look at each other. Ryan if i look at kelly in the eyes, its here, but if i look into the camera, its here. So how are we supposed to do the interview . Its really unnatural and uncomfortable. The way you wanna do it is you wanna give that impression that youre having eye contact, so look into the camera. Dont look on the screen, cause oncesee, im looking at you on the screen, and it doesnt feel like im looking at you. And the worst thing you can do is check yourself out and, like, look at your hair, cause its so tempting to do that. So just keep looking right into that camera. Kelly no, but i have to do thati look like a disaster. Ive been doing this every day. Ryan we have to check. Kelly i have to know how to hide the gray hair. Its crazy whats happening. I know. Kelly i cant find the hole. Like, i dont know where the hole is. I cant even see it. You cant seeokay, once you find it, put a little sticker next to it and say, like, look here. Put a sticky with a big arrow and just say look here. Kelly thats actually really smart. Ryan a decal for the hole locationthats what you need. A sticker with an arrow. Were gonna come back. We have more tips, and i think youre gonna ask us an interview question. A pseudo interview with kelly and ryan. Yeah. Ryan live, after this. Announcer if youd like to know more about anything youve seen on live, just log onto our website at kellyandryan. Com. [upbeat music] ryan we are back with Catherine Fisher from linkedin, and catherine, were ready for our pseudo interview. So youre gonna a ask us some questions as if were looking for a job . Yes, so the best thing you can do to prepare for a job is think about all those questions youre likely gonna ask. And so one of the most common ones, and im gonna start with you, kelly, im gonna ask you the same question as why do you wanna work for live with kelly and ryan . Kelly oh, i dont. No, no. [laughter] wrong answer. [laughter] kelly im sorry, is that what this is for . I am so sorry. I am sorry, i apologize. I totally misunderstood the assignment. [laughter] ryan shes applying for retirementthats what shes looking for. Kelly yes, im applying for my retirement. No, um, i. I. I am i like being part of a team. I am a collaborative person. I like the spontaneity and the danger of live television. And i feel that my strengths play into all of the things that that brand of television has to offer. Fabulous. All right, how would you answer that question, ryan . Ryan how would i answer the question why would i like to be a part of live with kelly and ryan . Yes. Well, the title, i guess, its already called that. Yeah, the name works. Ryan seems like it would make sense. And then the other thing is, and kelly knows this, when i was four, i was watching a young producer in his 30s at the time, michael gelman, and i always said to myself, if i have the opportunity, when i become an adult and fullgrown, id love to spend my days learning from him, deducing things from him, wisdom, things like that. And so i would say that the opportunity to just spend time with that man right there is a real big driver for me. What do you think . I think that was a great answer, and the reason why is because you did your research, you knew who was behind the show. You both talked about your strengths and what you could bring to it. What you wanna try to do is make sure that they know that you know all about the company and, really, what you would need to do to succeed there and how your skills apply to that. So i would hire you both. Ryan oh, great. Kelly oh, my gosh we got hired you did ryan can we take the day off . No. You have to work right now. Ryan [laughing] okay. Kelly are you sure . Ryan [laughing] hey, these are great tipsthank you so much for coming on. Nice to meet you. Kellyandryan. Com for all of catherines Job Interview tips, and you take care of yourself. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Ryan yes, back when i was four, this was just a radio showit was radio theater, and gelman was producing. Kelly he was producing. He was found. You know, thd to da thing called talent scouting, and he was found in a. He was found in a Starbucks Coffee of course, it wasnt called. Wasnt called starbucks then. Ryan no. Kelly it was called the coffee shop. Ryan it was the village canteen. Shh well be right back. Another good news story of the day. I think i ripped my. Kelly oh, yeah. Oh, you did. Yeah. Its okay. Whats your name . Announcer if youd like to know more about anything you see on live, just log onto our website at kellyandryan. Com. Announcer closed captioning sponsored in part by. [alarm beeping] [surfaces sunday best plays] every day can be a better day despite the challenge all you gotta do is leave it better than you found it i just say whatever cause there is no way around it hey, feeling good like i should went and took a walk around the neighborhood got that sunshine on my sunday best ryan this is the good news story of the day. Check this out. Kleon papadimitriou uh, close to that, i think a Greek College student. He was, uh, he was stuck in scotland where he studied with no way to get back to athens, greecebecause the flights were all canceled, so he couldnt get back, but he wanted to go back. So he bought a bicycle and he biked his way back home. 48 days to make it back by bike to meet his family, and he celebrated with some. Some peach halves in a can, looks like, along the way. There he is. He made it back, 48 days by bike. Kelly thats incredible. By the way, hes having del monte peach halves in a can. Ryan [laughing] yes i can taste them, iyou know what i can taste . The syrup theyre packed in. The juice theyre packed in. Kelly of course, of course. Yes, of course, but that kid is. Unbelievable. That is a need to get home. Ryan his parents said okay, well accept that youre gonna do this, under one condition, that you download an app and we can track you to make sure that youre doing okay along the way with your peach halves. So kleon made it home. Welcome back. Kelly what an experience. And i dont blame him. Id wanna get to athens too. I love athens. Ryan he went like 2,200 miles is the trip, so. That is it for us. First on oprah with the latte factor to his podcast the david bach show. And ten New York Times bestselling books to add into all of that. Hes here to dig families out of debt and give practical advice on how to survive these challenging times. And david joins us now from his home in florence, italy. David, you must be doing something right. Youre in one of the most beautiful places in the world right now. Tamron, thank you. Its great to be with you. Yes, we got a lot to talk about. So david, lets just unload here and get to some of these issues that people are talking about. The job loss numbers are, as you know, startling. Its been a seesaw effect and its going to likely be that way for a while. We know that. Right . We do. Look, were in a recession. And my grandmother used to always say to me, david, the most important thing i can tell you when the going gets tough like this is that this too shall pass. And heres the good news. The average recession lasts about 17 months. Since 1945, the average recession has lasted ten months. So were already into the recession well. So were going to come through this. But youve got to be prepared, because i think the next six, seven, eight, nine months are going to be very bumpy. Well, you know, not to add to the fear factor here, but there was a stat that i read that 40 of folks out there had under 500 for in case of emergencies. So that leads me to, david, when you dont have money that is a frightening and unsettling thing en you cannoor not. Ou have chin and you believe that that fear holds us back. It does. So you have to face your fear. One of my biggest recommendationsdo not talk about what youre afraid when it comes to money with your friends. Because they will tell you what theyre afraid of. Instead, what i want you to do is work, not worry. Truly figure out where all your money is and where your moneys going. Pull your last three months of statements. Checking accounts, credit cards, everything that youre spending money on. I need you to go through those expenses. Anything that you havent already cut out thats not truly critical. Im talking, like, food, and health care, and housing. Youve got to get rid of those things. And if you havent gotten rid of them, then at least, at a minimum, the second thing is renegotiate. Because now is a great time to call any singleany company that you are paying anything for. From rent to any membership fees you have. Really anything youre paying for. And call up and say, look, you know what, times are tough, ive got to cancel this. Theyve been programmed to offer you better deals when you call. So just doing that can often lower your 50 a month fee down in half. The last thing ill tell you is this. Now is the time to refinance. The good news in this recession is that has lower rates, down to a very low rate. Basically zero. And so you can refinance your mortgage debt, your student loan debt, your car loans, and your credit cards. That can help you immediately put money back in your pocket. And not spend so much money on interest when youre making those payments. Yeah, i think youre gonna stick around and were going to help out two families today. But one of the things i just want to go back to your advice on really narrowing down and knowing where your money is going. I remember my first tv job i made 14,500. My renti remember my rent 520 exactly was my rent at the time. But one of the things that i had to learnbecause listen, i was my backup plan. I am my backup plan. Is to really Pay Attention to where every dollar is going. Because at one point, i was like, what about my car and this money just disappears, and you look up. And ill just be honest, i looked up and i was like, oh, that check did not clear because of this and youre not keeping track of these things. And small amounts of money can change your life. I had this idea called the 100 day challenge where you save 10 a day for 100 days. If you do that100 days, 10 a dayyoull have over a thousand dollars in an emergency account. Now, thats more than 6 out of 10 americans have. If you wanted to save 10,000write this number down. 10,000 a year. You would save 27. 40 over the year. Youd have 10,000 in savings. Wow. The last thing ill tell you right now is know this recessions make people rich. They make millionaires. The last recession helped people build real wealth was in real estate. So if youre a renter, this is going to be an Incredible Opportunity for renters in the next 12 months to become homeowners. Because theres going to be buyers markets, and with rates being so low, it could be very possible that its cheaper for you to buy than rent. So weve created a program called the first time home buyers program. Which is available for free in partnership with money. Com on our website finishrich. Com. Its a fiveday course people can go through if theyre a renter. Im telling you, two things will make you wealthy when we come out of this recessionowning stocks and owning real estates. You got to be in it to win it. Those are the two primary escalators to Building Wealth as we come out of this recession. David, youre gonna stick around and help out some tam fam families. Thank you for doing that. And well be right back. Coming up. This salon owner is finally able to open her doors. But the family still faces an uphill battle. We are back with david bach, the money man with a plan. And he is hooking up some of our tam fam members with critical Financial Advice in this unprecedented time were living in. So cherisse and chuck white have been married for 27 years. And they were actually sadly forced to close their business during the pandemic. And now, with the country open, they are returning to work and trying to figure out what to do with their money. Whats their next move . Take a look. Hi, this is my wife cherisse and im chuck. And i am owner of white painting here in morgan hill, california. And im the owner and artistic director of cherisses hair salon. And we are heading through our pandemic. As we go into the salon, which would normally be super hustle bustle, we literally have no clients in here. I have products sitting on the shelf that i still owe for. My salon has been shut down since march 13th. Were going on many, many months of dealing with that. Were struggling with our finances. We have a lot of debt. The bills are definitely piling up, as you can see here. We have lots, and lots, and lots of bills. So thats a stressful level. We did get the ppp loan, which was awesome. We got a little bit of unemployment. Im about 30 slower. Should be able to make it through the summer. Its the wintertime is what im worried about. Were going to owe probably about 24,000 left for dakotas college fund. Our goals are to try to get our house paid off in 14 years. Our goal is to try to get our college debt tried to paid off. And the pandemic is definitely slowing all that down. As far as trying to make a plan for what do we do with the cash when it comes, and where do we spend it. Well, cherisse and chuck join us from their home in morgan hill, california. David has stuck around to talk with them. At this point last year, cherisse, your business had earned over 150,000. Right now, youre aboutim told 64,000. Will you be able to survive . I mean, seeing those products on your shelf that you still owe for just, you know, my heart goes out to you. What do you see is the plan . So as far as the plan goesjust getting back in there and doing less clients. Premier pricing is another alternative to make sure that the guests that are coming back in have been the ones that have been pretty loyal. Probably going to have to do slight price increase to offset what ive had to do for the protection of the masks and sanitization. And one guest at a time. So its going to be a little bit of a challenge trying to figure it out. Yeah, so chuck, i mean, hearing you say that, like, youre bracing for the winter slow down. Right now, are you just adding as many jobs that will come your way to try to front load in anticipation of what will happen in the winter . Yes. The economy for construction has gotten busier the last three or four weeks. Everybodys starting to open up again. So yeah, im going to try to stockpile some jobs later in the summer, and save for the winter, and hope for the best. Weve just started a new website advertising campaign, so that should help also. David, you have their financial information. They have a mortgage that was deferred that is due soon. Rent for the salon. College loans for dakota, their daughter. Thyois that are goingere. Whto recover quickly. E wellu so heres what i would tell you. I actually wouldnt do what youre planning on doing, which is raising prices, because youve got to have masks and cleaning supplies. I would really lean into your best customers, and id sell from the heart. And telling your clients, like, im so happy to be back. This has been so hard. Weve been in business this long and we want to be here forever. But the next six months, we know, are going to be difficult. So what we decided to do instead of raising our prices what id like to do is make a special. If todayif you could afford itwhen you buy your haircut today, if you buy next months haircut, ill give you a third haircut free. I know youve done prepaid cards before. And you said you were worried about the idea of having all this business later. I got to tell you something. The key right now to both your businesses is cash flow. You want to be piling in as much extra cash as you can, immediately. Because look, the one thing we dont know is whether or not well end up back in a quarantine again. Hopefully, were not going to. But theyre already talking about second waves. So id be bringing in as much cash as fast as you possibly can, and then to the expenses. Only make minimum payments right now on your credit cards. Only make minimum payments on those student loans. And literally just stockpile the cash as much as you can. And i would not wait for people to come to your location. Id be sending out those emails. I know chuck, youre working on a website. Id be picking up the phone. Id be calling every customer youve ever had. Because im telling you, if you sell from the heart, the people who have trusted you and liked you all these yearsyoure not asking for a handout. In fact, youre actually going to be offering them a better deal on services. Really put on the sales hat. Because what we are going to all have to do is market our little tails off to get the cash flow coming in. Once the cash flow comes in, then you start to figure out where youre going to put it. But right now, get that cash flow coming in. Thats going to help you. So chuck and cherisse, i mean, we try to have transparent and honest conversations around here. And i know that its hard. You know, theres no happy ending to this right now. Hopefully, there will be one. But from what youve heard, do you think that any of that could help moving forward, at least in the immediate few months ahead, cherisse . Um, yeah. I think its definitelyi hadnt thought about going three to fourthe fourth haircut be free. But iselling products like my life depended on it. Ive actually, during the shutdown, ive been doing curbside sales like crazy. So that has helped. And then my product manufacturers working with me. So i got to defer that payment out to 90 days, so that helped also. And then just keep selling it. And clients are trying to help us out. Like, how many products can we buy . How can we help you now . I love hearing that. Chuck, what about you . I mean, what do you think of some of the advice . Is that something you can implement . I think its a good idea trying to get the money up front a little bit. And then stockpile the jobs down the road like that. Ive never really thought about doing business like that. And i dont know if people will do it, but its something to look into. Thank you both. Wishing you the best. Im hoping that your Community Rallies around you just as the communities around the country are really stepping up to help our Small Businesses. Thank you, chuck and cherisse. David, well keep in contact with you. And were going to check in to see how youre doing along the way. Well be right back. Coming up. This preschool teacher and her husband earned nearly 200,000. Were back, and my next guest, yenny dislatoone, is a preschool director in new york while she and her husband have both been able to keep their jobs through the pandemic. She says that one paycheck away thats where they are from financial ruin. Here is yennys story. Hi, my name is yenny dislatoone. And i live in upstate new york. It seems like the bills have just become astronomical. My food cost just began to be higher and higher through the pandemic. It was either that you couldnt find certain items, or when you did find them, they were really, really expensive. And then theres utilities. I have children that are engaging in distance learning. So theyre on computers all day, every day. And then theres heating and cooling thats now running all day long. Water bills went up. You name it, it skyrocketed. We were robbing peter to pay paul and prioritizing our bills based on what was most important. But still finding ourselves short and struggling. We need help. Yenny joins us now from her home in westchester, new york, along with our financial voice of the day, david bach. So yenny, you say being middle class is tough because your expenses went up, but youre not eligible for any relief. Absolutely. I mean, the poverty guideline is 26,200 for a family of four. Anything above that, youre considered middle income. And theres little to no support available for families like ours. Right, and youre making combined income of just under 200,000 a year. Youre in a position where things like groceries and utilities have broken your budget. And david, this is also regional. I mean, shes in new york. And thats an expensive state. We know that. Yeah. And you factor that income into it. So 200,000 is a lot of money. But, you know, what yenny and her family are going to through, you believe, is very common. Well, it is very common. Yenny, i went through your expenses. And when people hear, oh, this family makes lets say 200,000. Which sounds like an enormous amount of money in new york. Once you pay taxes, its like 120,000. Maybe. And when you go through your expenses prequarantine, you were sort of right there, right . Like, right paycheck to paycheck, right there. And now whats happening is your expenses have gone up 2,000 or 3,000 a month because of food and utilities. So let me be super specific with you. Because i went through your expenses. Im going to tell you very specific things you can do immediately. But other people can do this, too. Number one, the good news for you, again, because rates have come down, you can refinance your mortgage right now. You could save 1 , probably, or may be a little bit more than that, on your mortgage. Thats going to help you save over 300 a month. So lets call it 4,000 a year. Over the length of your mortgage, thats six figures in savings. So the first thing i want you to doliterally, like when the show is over, is i want you to call your bank and apply to refinance your home. Because youre going to have to get in a queue. A lot of people are refinancing right now. You want to get in early now before the rates go up. Thats number one. Number two, this grocery bill of yours. I know weve all been eating a whole lot more and youve got all these kids at home. But man, you got to go to the Grocery Store with these things called coupons. You literally need to go to the Grocery Store with a specific budget on how much you are going to spend. Because your food cost tripled. So they told me youre going to the Grocery Store, youre not using instacart. By the way, for anybody who is using instacart way more expensive when the food gets delivered to you. Youre paying 10 , 20 , 30 more sometimes when you do that. Go to the Grocery Store, use coupons. And then utilities. You need to sit down truthfully with the family and show them these utilities. I know you got grown up kids, but the grownup kids got to get involved in this project with you. They need to know what mom and dad are going through. They need to get on the lower the utility cost bandwagon. And then lets some of the stuff that you goti mean, look, some of this stuff is luxuries, too. Going through your cable bills, i know you got three cable boxes. You got expenses that if i came over to your house, and i was being ruthless, i can figure out things you can cut back. And i would tell you that because you guys both have good jobs, good income, the fastest thing you can do right now is actually to cut your overhead. So yenny, are you ready to be ruthless . Because apparently thats what its going to take. Im ready to be ruthless. But im also ready to think outside the box. It was one of the things that greg and i immediately said. Like, what are we going to do differently . And thats why we decided were going to start a residual income business. We started the plan on it, ytd surrender designs. And we are going to start thinking outside the box. Because iwe dont want to go back to where we started from. And it seems like thats the direction the train is headed in. So i do think that families like ours have to begin to think about that. What are ways that we can bring in more money . And yes, listening to davids advice. What are ways we can cut back on what we already have. The only thing i would say therebecause this is super, super important thing to say here, tamron. Iis that if you maku will get a. The meyu just spend more. So there are, like, millions of americans right now that are going to watch this show and say to themselves, oh, my god, if i was just making anything close to what youre making it would be financially okay. If youre going to start a new business, i wouldnt even consider starting a new business until you have gotten through the next six months. Keep your job, lower your overhead. Keep your job, lower your overhead. All right, yenny, what do you think . Sounds good. Sounds like sound advice. Thank you so much to our families. Thank you, david. I know its a lot to digest. So to help out here, david has a free fiveday course called the firsttime homebuyer challenge. For more information on how you can take the course, go to tamronhallshow. Com. Thank you, again. And well be right back. Coming up. Youve been wasting my time. You need to walk away. Hes an army vet. Thats amazing. John quinones and what would you do . Next. Time to open up and reveal our little secret. Hi, there. I am John Quinones. Oh, my gosh. That was the Legendary John quinones, host of abcs what would you do . And hes asking the world, what would you do if you witnessed or overheard an uncomfortable or hurtful conversation in public . Maybe in a store or overhearing an employee discriminating against cuom gender, or bodtype r owjo is gointo u but were lucky to have him pop up with us today. He joins us from outside of dallas, texas. John, this series remains to me one of the best and most important ones on tv. Im not just saying thats cause we are fellow texans. I am telling you, because even now when we wonder who we are and we look at the times that we are living in, this show has always been thati think just important. Important in this dialogue. Thank you. Yes, im so glad were doing it. I never thought 12 years ago when we started doing this that wed still be going as strong as it is now. But i think its more relevant today, because of whats going on in this country, than ever before. And im glad that people are put on notice and that they worry, is this a what would you do . scenario . Because thats the truest test of a persons character in the end. Right . I know you brought some clips with you. The first story involves a coach who cant accept his players sexuality. Take a look. I wanted to tell you that imim gay. Youre going to throw away your career. Are you out of your i knowi know you feel this way. But im ready to come out to my team members, and thats that. I lost my appetite. And when coach storms out. Look atall of them are stunned. They step in. He thinks im ruining my career. No, no youre not. Im proud of you for having the courage to speak up for who you are and what matters to you. Thank you. Okay, i know that thats staged, and i want to cry. Like, whatwhen you see that kind of moment, john, and the reaction from those two women. How does thatwhat you think . Alwaysit never gets old. Often times i look around and were all in tears. Even these veteran cameramen, who have been, you know, shooting stuff for 30 years, are in tears. Its inspiring to see people stand up, sound the alarm for a stranger. Do you think people dont act out ofnot a lack of empathy, but may be fear . Yeah. Often times, theres that concern, you know. There might be repercussions. We never advise that everyone jump in when they witness Something Like this. But that makes those heroes who do stand up all the more stronger. Right . Women, by the way, do a better job of doing this. I dont know if its the maternal instinct, or because youre braver than us guys. Wow. I think its because guys think it might become physical. Right . And they worry about that added element. Women, you guys do a much better job. Well, well have more with the Legendary John quinones when we come back with more of what would you do . So briefly, though, explain the karen phenomenon, and then well play the clip, for people who dont know what that is. Um, you know, people presume the worst of someone based on their appearances. The way to stop that is if we just, for a few seconds, stop ourselves and ask ourselves, why am i thinking the worst of this person . And if we do that, were less likely to be so judgmental. But were seeing it all over the place. People with their own cell phones taking these videos of people doing outrageous things. Lets take a look. Youre babysitting for these two children . Yes. And their parents are aware of this . These first customers clearly hear jennifers line of questioning. Can she take a picture with her cell phone . They turn the tables on our actress and start throwing questions her way. What so. Whats wrong . Is it because its a black guy with two white kids . Is that it . It just doesnt look right to me. Why is it not right . Ill tell you, john. Those actors are incredible. Have you ever been in a scenario where you look around and think, is this happening to me . Is my team testing what would i do . You know, because of where i come from, because im latino, ive encountered real life situations like this. The other day i was at the airport, and i was getting on the flight to new york, and this woman thought i was jumping ahead of myself. And i was ahead of my class, if you will. So she started yelling at me. I didnt say a word, but she didnt recognize me from television. She just started saying, sir, the line starts over here. Why are you getting on the plane . The announcement, she says, and this was the clincher, she said, the announcement was madethe announcement was made in english. We speak english in america. I swear to god. And everyone else in line had the same reaction. They said, oh, my god, john, is this a what would you do . scenario . People who recognized me from the show. And i said, no, unfortunately, its real life. And im sittingshe sent me to the back of the line. I didnt want to cause a scene. I mean, the list goes on, and on, and on from everything from not being able to hug our loved ones, the kids cant go to school, or even worse, facing the fear of unemployment. The fact is, many Small Businesses, im sure a lot of them in your community, have not been able to survive. On h a recent new york beentimeesses. Ki in ap they often lacked access to loans and did not have enough cash on hand to pay for the more than two weeks worth of bills. But these three black owned restaurants have found a way to push through the pandemic and help their communities at the same time. Take a look. My name is chef mayacamille broussard, and i am the founder of justice of the pies, a bakery that specializes in sweet and savory pies, quiches, and tarts. We dont have a storefront. So we rely on farmers markets, and fairs, and corporate catering to make our money. So when the pandemic hit, it was scary. Whenever im faced with a challenge, i push through that fear and i and innovate. And one of the ways in which ive been able to innovate is by providing meals for frontline workers. My names jack from tripple jays pizza down here in atlanta. Say hello to the people, jerimiah. Hey, how you doing . Justin on the oven. I started making pizza with my sons, who were about seven and ten at the time. And my stay at home wife decides she wants to become an entrepreneur by selling our pizza. So we buy a food truck and were building it up. And then life throws us a curve ball. Our oldest boy, brandon, gets diagnosed with brain cancer. He ultimately lost his battle. But we decided we were going to build the truck out as a memento to him. Things went along so well that in 2001 we decided we were going to build our first brick and mortar in atlanta. We opened up february 1st. And march 1st, the pandemic hit. Our dreams started to look like a nightmare. But were people of faith and we were just not going to give up. My name is elliot mosby and im the managing owner of the montclair diner. In less than a year, we were able to take this 1923 institution and grow it by over 50 in sales. Then, covid hit. As you can see, a once bustling and thriving restaurant is now empty. We are only doing curbside takeout and delivery. We also knew it was our mission to get back to black and Brown Community frontline workers and struggling families. Every day continues to be a fight. But we are survivors. Okay, im tearing up and were just starting the segment. Elliott and gus join us from montclair diner in new jersey. Mayacamille joins us from her home in chicago. And terrence family joins us from triple jays pizza in atlanta. Thank you all, a, for joining us and b, for being so resilient. Jay, the loss that you experienced with brandon to cancer fueled your familys mission. To see you there altogetheri know you, you know, make some of the best pizza out there in atlanta. But i think about that movie soul food and that scene where the grandmom talks about the mighty fist, and how individually the fingers are fragile, but when you inform together thats the family, thats the fist. You know, youve just been doing great. And youve persevered through all of this. What is the secret . The secret for us is all based around family. You know, alreadywe started making pizza as a family when my boys were little guys. And it was just to hang out. And then my son brandon passedthat fueled our energy to build the food truck. And we used that same energy to get through the pandemic. Its tough, but we already made it through tough things in life already. So if we can make it through that, i guess we could make it through this as well. Well, i ask you what was the secret. I have a secret, too. So i am not here to talk about food, despite the fact that i could talk about food all day. Llisose, mayaenme aie. I didnt get anything from montclair diner. And im still waiting on my pizza, triple jay. So ill put that to the side, because im actually here to spread some restaurant love with the help of my friends at bobs red mill. Now, bobs red mill is an employeeowned Natural Foods company which specializes in honest to goodness, stone ground, whole grain flours, other organic, nongmo, and glutenfree foods. I have to tell you, i have their products and my home. Its something that i use to feed my own son. They want to show that they have an unwavering support for black owned restaurants hit disproportionately hard by the numbers, as you see. So yall might want to sit down. Well, youre already sitting down. So heres the deal. Bs re igingeach o 15,000 as an appreciation for filling bellies, feeding our soul, and fostering the spirit of community. To just knock off the edge of this trying time, i want you all to win. I see the smiles on yourhow do you feel . Youre justare you frozen . Thats crazy thats amazing you see the look on my face, tamron. Okay, this is not a fake look, real look. Maya, what does this mean for you at this time, especially . This helps so much because often times we dont get that extra lift and thats all we need sometimes. Its just a little extra lift. That was beautifully said. So i will see all of you, hopefully, when we can travel safely and see what youve done with this generous money from our friends at bobs red mill. Thank you for the restaurant love. And continue all of the wonderful things you are doing in your communities. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thanks for tuning in, everybody. Tears and all today. Well see you tomorrow.
