Now from abc7, live breaking news. Wildfires rage on in the bay area, ballooning in size overnight. Right now more than 1 million acres have burned in california. That is the most in state history. And more people are being told they need to evacuate. Good evening and thanks for joining us. Im dion lim. And im eric thomas. This is a quick look at three big fires burning in the bay area. The lnu complex, which is in the north bay, has charred more than 341,000 acres. Its the second largest wildfire in state history. The scu complex which covers parts of alameda, contra costa and santa clara is behind at 339,000 acres. And the s tzu complex is burning in san mateo and santa cruz counties. We have Team Coverage for you. Theyre getting ready for more fires. Cornell barnard is in the north bay where the lnu complex keeps growing. We begin with meteorologist drew tuma with a look at the chance of us seeing more lightning strikes tonight. Drew. We were watching live doppler 7 as we see moisture begin to stream in from the south. The immediate vicinity showing you we have cells offshore. Those will remain offshore. That is not a threat to us. What we are watching, though, from the south, this is what were watching very closely. These cells around monterey and off the coast of monterey. They are slowly moving in from the south. The good news right now, you look at live doppler 7, there are no lightning strikes on the screen. So no lightning within these cells currently. Moisture from what was hurricane genevieve continues to stream into california. That red flag warning is still in effect. So future weather later on evening by 8 00, 9 00 well continue to watch moisture move south to north. Its not only lightning, its poor to unhealthy air quality. Areas like pleasanton in the hazardous category when it comes to air quality. Well see if we can find improvements in the air quality and take a closer, detailed time line of the moisture m thn the full accuweather forecast in a few minutes. We need that improvement, drew. Thanks. We start in the north bay and whats being called the lnu lightning complex. The second largest wildfire in state history. Its burning primarily in napa and sonoma counties, scorching 341,000 acres. Containment is only at 17 . Its wiping out hundreds of buildings and Cornell Barnard saw some of it firsthand today and joins us live from healdsburg. Cornell . Another tough day for firefighters here and the fight continued in western sonoma county. Take a look. Smoke rising from that ridge here in the dry creek valley. The walbridge fire made some progress overnight, but now a new threat of lightning could be a huge setback. This driving tour shows the path of destruction from the walbridge fire in western healdsburg. The fire still smoldering on Wallace Creek road. By morning there was thick, heavy smoke across the region. By sunday afternoon cal fire back in the air with choppers making water drops after flames were spotted in canyons above the dry creek valley. These firefighters from Washington State watching the progress. This home destroyed by the fire. Nothing left but the metal roof. But down the hill, a grove of olive trees still standing, spared by the flames. A new Weather Threat from winds and lightning could be a huge setback for fire crews. The winds will generally be light, however, erratic, gusty winds of up to 65 miles an hour by occur. This dry lightning will likely half an hour efforts to contain the current fires and may spark new fires. Were going to be watching the potential Lightning Storm tonight. The mayor of windsor is confident that fire crews will gain the upper hand. Still residents should be prepared to go if necessary. Weve gone through this before, even residents who are not in the warning zones, people are packed up ready to go. Some have actually already left. He went right now is stressful. Katie from guerneville, one of you thousands forced to leave home is hoping to get assistance to pay for the hotel where she and her family could be staying for a while. Thats why were at the fairgrounds today in hopes of getting assistance or help because right now were spending about 4,000 on a hotel just for two weeks. The county says its working with the red cross to make Hotel Vouchers available. Back live with a shot of the smoke rising from this ridge here in the western part of healdsburg. There is good news today. Several mandatory evacuation zones have been downgraded in the past two hours, downgraded to warnings. That includes areas of forestville and parts of the southern dry creek valley. Those folks are allowed to return home. Were live in healdsburg, Cornell Barnard, abc7 news. Cornell, thank you very much. The other big fire in the bay area is the scu complex, the Third Largest in state history. It grew 339 acres and containment is at 10 . There is concern, however, the incoming weather could create new fires and tax alreadyexhausted firefighters. I cannot reiterate the magnitude of how long this incident can go and our troops are exhausted. If you look at the map and you look at over 300,000 acres spread out and now with seven counties with two additional counties starting to look at this incident as it gets closer, the life safety component is our number one priority for this incident. Abc7 News Reporter an sar hassan joins us in livermore with more on how firefighters are preparing. An sar . Good evening, eric. Firefighters say this fire is burning everywhere. If the winds pick up later on tonight, they say it doesnt matter what direction the wind blows. It will move this fire. So one of the Top Priorities is to stop the fire along mines road to protect livermore. The strategy is to fight fire with fire. They want to burn out the fuel along the hills in mines canyon. That way they can create a barrier to stop the fire from advancing. The fires that make up the scu lightning complex is burning on both sides of the canyon. Fire officials are careful to point out that right now the fires are about 17 miles away from the livermore city limits. But with Lightning Storms and strong winds expected tonight, that situation could quickly change, especially if the fires come together. So as the fires come together further south, were not sending fire down this canyon down mines road through this. We have a lot of residents, a lot of ranchers and a lot of homes and property down here that we want to protect. Thats our mission today. Evacuation warnings have been issued and firefighters will be out here all night to hold the line. Abc7 news. Thanks. Evacuations are under way on the east side of morgan hill. This is video from an hour ago where you see a stream of cars leaving the evacuation zone in the santa clara foothills. Police have set up a check point to check i. D. S for folks driving in the opposite direction. An Evacuation Center has been set up at a high school in morgan hill. Firefighters on the front lines of the s tzu complex in southern san mateo and santa cruz counties say fires are burning above the marine layer. That cluster of fires has burned so far 71,000 acres and is only 8 contained. Damage inspection teams are starting to enter parts of the fire zone thouo assess what has burned. Like many firefighters during this time, those working the czu complex have been working 12hour shifters to protect the community. Now one became the victim of a heinous crime himself and Law Enforcement has a for criminals, stay away. Its saddening and sickening. As the czu fire grows in santa cruz and san mateo counties, and hundreds of families evacuate their scorched homes, a crime adding insult to injury. A firefighter fighting on the front lines becoming a victim himself. I cant imagine a bigger lowlife than breaking into somebody whos helping protect this community, breaking into his car and taking his wallet and then charging up a bunch of credit card charges and taking money out of his bank account. The heinous act of stealing a wallet from a First Responder compounded by at least eight arrests for looting of fenl scotts creek. If you come to these communities and you try to take caught, we are going to prosecute you to the full extent of the law. As victims seek shelter, the d. A. Also reporting instances of price gouging at businesses such as hotels, stressing prosecution to the fullest extent of the law, which includes a 10,000 fine. For now, as empathy for the fire victims grows, theres no empathy or patience for criminals. But a vow to keep them out and a promise of justice. It takes a special person to wake up in the morning and say im going to go victimize and traumatize people who have already been through everything that this communitys been through. We should point out cal fire wants the victim aware there is no official gofundme for the firefighter who had his wallet stolen. We have more wildfire coverage ahead. Flames still going in parts of marin county. A close call today in the east bay. What we now know about ive been involved in. Communications in the media for 45 years. Ive been taking prevagen on a regular basis for at least eight years. For me, the greatest benefit over the years has been that prevagen seems to help me recall things and also think more clearly. And i enthusiastically recommend prevagen. It has helped me an awful lot. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. Additional fire crews are helping battle the fire in marin county at the Point Reyes National seashore. The fire threatens more than 1,600 buildings and has scorched 27 hu 2,700 acres. One crew from out of town has specific experience fighting fires like woodward. We are helping manage the fire with lots of experience managing large fires all over the country. Firefighters rescued the victim from the balcony of the unit where the fire began. That victim has been taken to a burn center and the complex is located on north civic near parkside drive. Heavy smoke damaged other units in that complex. A fire investigator is on the scene trying to determine the cause. If you are looking to take and head to the im meteorologist drew tuma. Were not only tracking the potential for liepgt overnigght overnight, but unhealthy air across the whole bay area. Beaches are still closed in pacifica and half moon bay. Theyre expected to reopen tomorrow however, judging by what we saw yesterday, people were still going to them. Public safety officials are asking people to stay away so the roads are clear for firefighters and wildfire evacuees. Really watching the weather closely as we head into the workweek. Drew, what can we expect on top of the lightning that could pop up . A lot of us a dealing with unhealthy air quality no matter where you look right now in the bay area. You can barely see over the horizon, just some smoke that just settled in in much of the region. Live doppler 7 right now, the threat were tracking is a possibility of lightning overnight. Right now with the active sweep you see some storms off the coastline right here. These storms, these will stay away from us. That is not a problem for us. What we are watching are storms developing to our south. You can see that around monterey right now and off the coastline. The storms are moving from a southtonorth fashion, so that is the threat we face over the next several hours. The good news right now, you look on live doppler 7 and you do not see any lightning bolts within these cells that we are tracking moving into the bay area. If you did see lightning, you would see a bolt like this. You see these in the sierra . These storms are producing lightning. This is a good trend we like to see right up. Theres no lightning currently in the bay area, and that is a trend we hope continues Going Forward into the evening. But this string of moisture goes pretty far south from monterey all the way down to santa barbara. This moisture stream is moving into the bay area, thats why the threat for lightning does continue overnight into early monday morning. The threat for air quality in unhealthy zones continues right now. Look at these pm levels. Right now the bay area air Quality Management district does have pleasanton not hazardous range with the smoke thats settled into the inland east bay. No matter what your age or health condition, when you have numbers this high, it can really affect your health. So you do want to stay indoors. Look at the picture right now. Live look. This is san jose. This is the skyline of san jose. You can see all the smoke that is in our atmosphere. So the air quality unfortunately the next two days is just going to fluctuate between poor and unhealthy. We have spare the air days in Effect Tomorrow and tuesday. Numbers right now, cool along the coast. It is warm inland. But were concerned with those lightning strikes overnight tonight. Lets go hour by hour for you and show you what were looking at in the next few hours. At 7 30 you can see the moisture, very isolated in spots. But that threat for any of these cells to produce lightning does continue late tonight. Into early tomorrow morning. This is 4 00 a. M. I think by about 8 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning that threat really diminishes. Were looking at about a 21hour wind 21ho 12hour window. Air quality issues through wednesday and we do expect hazy skies thursday into friday, guys.
