Packed cooling centers, brush fires and dozens of ocean rescues. And now a red flag warning about to go into effect. Good evening and thanks so much for joining us. Im dion lim. And im eric thomas. Lets get right to meteorologist drew tuma with more on that red flag warning. Drew . Yeah, its been another day of intense record breaking heat across the entire bay area. Look at the numbers that have fallen today. Anywhere shaden that is numerous cities eithe tied or set new records today. 108 in livermore, 100 the high in redwood city earlier today, 103 in santa rosa. And it is still a very warm evening out there as we approach midnight. Look at these numbers. Little in the way of cool air moving in. Were in the 70s if not widespread 80s along the coast. Were in for another uncomfortable for lot of us tonight. With all this heat across california it has started thunderstorms. Were seeing on live doppler 7 you can see thunderstorms off the Central Coast, they do have lightening so there is the risk of dry lightening moving into Northern California overnight tonight. It is for that fact a red flag warning is now in effect for the threat of that dry lightening until 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning. The risk is there. If lightening does strike a new fire could potentially strike. Were going to take a closer look at this red flag warning, how hot we get tomorrow and how long this heat wave will last in a few minutes. For the second night in a row pg e was ordered by the States Agency that operates the border grid to start rolling outages about 2 30 this evening. Pg e says power was restored about three hours later. The state agency cal iso said earlier today there wouldnt be outages but change of plans was made due to electricity increased demand and loss to a power plant and some wind power. Heres a look at the current outages in the bay area. These counties were not impacted by todays rotating outages but a pg e spokesperson tells us there were still several heat related outages. Those outages in yellow affected more than 50 people. The orange affected more than 500 people. Some people affected today had been without electricity since last night. Luce pena talked to some families who had had enough of this heat wave. Reporter tonight is the second day in a row that are in t dark. Ss the bay are thinking like regular people, well, you know what, itll be on in a little while and well be good, right . Well, this morning still no power. And, okay, now you really start to worry because then i start worrying about all the food i have in the fridge. This teacher is one of over 4,000 pg e customers affected by rotating Power Outages. Unlike many who got their power back this morning its been over 24 hours for her without electricity. And the biggest concern for her now is not having a lesson plan ready for her students. Usually over the weekend you plan your lessons and make sure everything works and start posting it to google classroom and all those good Things Technology allows us to do. Well, im not able to do that. Im crossing my fingers that monday morning im going to be able to actually go into my school site but to at least obviously prepare my lessons. Reporter the outages were expected to affect approximately 220,000 pg e customers. In the east bay thousands were in the dark with temperatures reaching over 105 degrees, driving was the saving grace for many. The only air conditioner we got is my car. Luckily my tank is full and weve been cruising around livermore. Just having the air conditioner because with my health issssurvive. Reporter the heat is also increasing the amount of emergency calls. In Contra Costa County the Fire Protection district is gearing up to respond to potential fires. Theyre expecting thunderstorms with lightening strikes. So if we have lightening with this very hot weather we are concerned about the number of vegetation fires that well have. A red flag warning wept into effect at 11 00 p. M. Tonight in Contra Costa County. We have an additional engine already staffed, called back our crew 12, our hand crew that assists with vegetation fires, an additional chief officer working tonight and also our dozer on standby. There are ways to help conserve energy and maybe avoid outages while still trying to bat the heat. First of all set your thermostat at 78 degrees fahrenheit or even higher and then keep the house cooler with fans instead of the ac and be sure to draw your curtains to block the sun. Turn off unnecessary appliances and use major appliances in the morning or late in the evening. Higher rates are usually charged between noon and 8 00 p. M. In the summer. A warning to swimmers and surfers from fire crews to stay close to the shore while trying to beat the heat. Abc 7 was out at ocean beach s were rescued at about 5 00 tonight. One had to be given cpr and is in critical condition. The others were able to walk to the ambulance. San Francisco Fire Department tweeted today they have made eight surf related rescues and one cliff rescue. They have responded to about 700 safety related calls. A fire damaged a building and delayed drivers along San Francisco freeways this afternoon. People saw smoke rising miles away from the scene after the fire started along the southbound u. S. 101 along paul avenue. Heres how it looked for drivers headed in the opposite direction. The fire have started binuilding that houses a construction company, and firefighters think somebody may have set it. Part of what makes it so vicious is that our companies have been here several times in the past couple of months for similar outside fires. Well, the chp closed three lanes along southbound 101 reop5 this afternoon. Dozens of people relied on a cooling center to avoid the heat in san jose today. Visitors had to get their temperature checked before they could enter the Camden Community center. City workers setup seating and tables in a way that visitors could socially distance from one another. But one woman claims shes not worried about being indoors with strangers during a pandemic. To be completely honest were both over 70. If we die, we die. You know, nobody lives forever. One woman turned to the cooling center when their power went out at home and work had to get done. I mean ac wise we can live without it, but power you cant, right . You cant use your phone as a hot spot or anything. Sane lln cooling centers every day from today to wednesday. Park rangers are giving away face masks to people at deloris park today. And they say theyre also making sure people are following the health order. In vallejo people struggled to cool down today after losing their electricity and then having a water pump fail. That Pump Supplies several homes. It finally came back on but when its 107 something degrees outside that thing aint no joke. No joke indeed. Other people flocked to the vallejo waterfront hoping to catch a breeze there. One man heat interrupt his weekly routine of smoking and grilling meat. I like to dip into the shade and usually no matter how hot it gets theres usually a breeze off the water. And the big tip from others enjoying the heat outside is stay hydrated. As part of abc 7s commitment to cover five major areas to help build a better bay area we now focus on health and the latest on the coronavirus pandemic. State Health Officials say there were more than 12,600 newly recorded confirmed cases on friday. While that total is more than 4,000 cases higher than the previous days number the total may include delayed test results. Yesterday the governor said the state is caught up with its reporting of cases that were backlogged due to a data glitch. California reports 151 deaths, down 37 from the previous day. Los angeles and riverside counties have the highest case counts in the state. The abc 7 news iteam has learned about arrests linked to a scheme by San Mateo County jail inmates to obtain Unemployment Benefits intended for people affected b at least 11 inmates used county owned computers to apply for benefits. Some of those inmates face murder charges. The scam netted about 250,000. San mateo county sheriffs deputies and officers from other agencies arrested 21 people in three counties stretching from San Francisco to the san valley. 57 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the Oakland Alameda estuary last night because of a power outage. Thats according to east bay utility district. Its a dilution issue really and we have to wait for a couple of days most likely, and well be testing the water. Well be doing sampling along the estuary. And when the water is safe we will let the public know that they can go back in. East bay says itatheer was going to be cut. Pg e has not commented. East bay mud says its going to have to pay a fine for that spill. All right, turning to the weather now. The sweltering heat not going anywhere, drew, at least for the next couple days. Yeah, the heat wave will continue for the next several days so little in the way of relief from these war daytime temperatures, and now tonight our concern is with the red flag warning that is now in effect for the entire bay area. So live doppler 7 right now the active sweep showing you no storms in the immediate vicinity, but well widen out the view. And what we are watching and what is of concern are thunderstorms that have developed off the Central Coast right now. Live doppler 7 estimating the number of lightening strikes in just the past 15 minutes with that cluster of storms is 106. And those storms are moving into Northern California over the next couple of hours. So the threat is there that we could see storms thatl havoe br lightening to the bay area. So it is for that fact that a red flag warning is now in effect for the entire region until 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning. Typically when we talk about red flag warnings its for gusty winds but tonight its for that threat of dry lightening that could potentially start new vegetation wildfires. Thats something well be watching closely over the next couple of hours and overnight and the Morning Hours tomorrow with meteorologist lisa argen. The other story its an uncomfortable way to sleep if you dont have a way to cool off. The windows are open, theres little in the way of a breeze right now. 80 that current temperature in san jose, and 73 in santa rosa. So were in store for a another day tomorrow of dangerous heat. So heat advisories and excessive heat warnings are in still for the second half of the weekend. And with the high temperatures theres a high risk of heat related illness, so heat exhaustion or heatstroke. If you have to be outside take frequent breaks in the shade. This heat is sticking around for several days. Overnight today again little in relief with these temperatures. Many cities will hold in the 70s overnighthe upper 60s. Future tracker temperatures if you want to get out and maybe exercise early in the morning do it before 10 00 a. M. Because you can see by that hour were already warming up pretty quickly. Already in the 70s and into the 80s. And numbers will just continue to soar tomorrow afternoon. So here we go again. Its another hot day no matter where you live. 104 the forecast high in concord tomorrow, 95 in san jose, 103 in cloverdale, back into the 80s in San Francisco tomorrow, 90 the high in oakland, and 91 the forecasted red high for palo alto. If youre thinking about going to the coast tomorrow to get a bit of relief it will be a warm day at our beaches tomorrow. It is sunny, the uv index will be very high. Santa cruz a forecasted high of 91 degrees, so it is hot in spots. Even ocean beach 78 degrees. Itll be very mild in a lot of spots along the coastline. Our heat wave it does continue tomorrow. It stays hot and hazy monday and into tuesday. Tuesday, in fact, looks to be a hot day across the region. Wednesday were still in the thick of it. But by thursday, eric and dion, well begin to see some relief before friday and saturday numbers get closer to average. About four days still of intense heat so take it easy out there. We have consecutive days of this intense heat it can really take a toll on our bodies, guys. Thursday and friday cant come soon enough. Drew, thank you.
