administrative leave. this comes amid an investigation into a private face group -- facebook group, where current and retired law enforcement officers, allegedly, shared bigoted and racist comments. good evening, thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. civil rights groups are now demanding, not only a fast investigation but, changes from the department. abc 7 news reporter joins us live from the newsroom with more on this story. >> the president of the san jose police union says he plans to expel every retired and active member from the union who participated in the private facebook group which was used to, allegedly make racist and anti-muslim comments. >> the san jose police officers' association will provide you no shelter, no protection. >> that's the message from the san jose police union, after learning about a private facebook group, made up of active and retired san jose police officers. allegedly, used to make racist and anti-muslim comments. san jose police chief writes any current employee involved with bigoted activity online will promptly be investigated and held accountable, to the fullest extent in my power. we have no place for this. four san jose police officers are now on administrative leave after the blog post exposed the secret facebook group. san jose mayor believes the group dates back to at least 2010. >> the union said we're not going to defend him. and i think that's important that the union leadership and police chief are clear this is not the kind of conduct we are going to tolerate, in any way. and i expect these officers are going to be fired. >> how many officers actually participated in department trainings conducted by these officers? how many leaders like knew and said nothing? i'm having a hard time believing this secret facebook group was just discovered. >> civil rights attorney is with care, the counsel on american islamic relations. what makes this case of alleged police misconduct so troublesome is that one of the officers accused conducted antibias training for the san jose police department. >> oh, wait, they are racist against my people and they have joked online about hurting my people. why would i call them if i face a hate crime? >> now, calling for an sexpeditd investigation and to fire those found guilty. they, also, want the police union to be involved in crafting legislation around reforming police. and for review in all cases and investigations these officers are connected to, to make sure there was no bias in the arrests. >> who might be sitting in jail because, what looked like an objective stop, what looked like a clean interaction, may have actually been driven by bigotry. so whose cases need to be look the a at is very important. >> that investigation should be conducted by independent authorities. he says it will be up to the city attorney to determine if former or retired office face any charges. in the newsroom, abc 7 news. >> we app store. >> we are continuing to track the covid-19 outbreak at san quentin state prison. state data shows 89 staff members have tested positive. now, officials have halted plans to transfer inmates monday after two of those inmates were positive. abc 7 reporter laura martinez has more. >> covid-19 is rapidly spreading within san quentin walls. reported over 600 inmates and 89 staff members have tested positive. >> social distancing is -- is not really a reality, here. >> on saturday, the cdcr announced plans to halt the transfer of some inmates to north kern state prison, after two inmates scheduled to transfer tested positive. formerly incarcerated people and current inmates said the outbreak stems from transfers made over to san quentin in the first place. >> as of march 30th, 122 people were transferred to san quentin, from the california institute for men. >> according to the cdcr, california institute for men in chino has the highest death rate at 16. >> i can't believe they are actually considering transferring. considering the waco vid spread into san quentin was through transferring inmates. >> public defender brandon woods sent two letters to governor gavin newsom urging him to take action. >> talking close to 30,000 people could be released right now as opposed to waiting until they get infected with covid and die. >> cdc expedited the release of roughly 3,500 inmates who were due to be released within 60 days or less. one inmate says there is a high level of anxiety, and he is pleading for people of murin to speak up. >> across california, the department of public health reports another covid-19 jump. 206,433 cases yesterday. that's up more than 5,900 cases from the day before. san francisco's mayor paused the planned openings monday of several businesses, including hair salons, nail salons, and outdoor bars. moran county put reopening on hold for hotel, gyms, personal services, including tattoo shops and nail salons, indoor dining, hair me. >> he says the man took off on a bike. joe hawkins was the first to carry the pink torch for this year's pride weekend relay, culminating in san francisco, and escorted by mayor libby schaff. >> i am furious that anyone would find it appropriate to commit that kind of act, on any building. but, particularly, this sanctuary. >> many say the castro district has lost its party spirit this year. >> it's supposed to be pink saturday today. and it's nothing near to a pink saturday. >> but many bars and restaurants say they don't want big crowds coming here. >> if people aren't distancing, we'll stop serving and close it down. we want everybody to be safe. >> back in oakland, joe says these shattered windows won't break his pride. >> we are going to be okay. and this is going to make us 12-acre brush fire brought traffic to a near standstill in solano county today. the fire was reported around 3:00 this afternoon. smoke and flames traveled across interstate 680, causing traffic to slow for nearly an hour. a drone flying in the area forced aircraft to be grounded temporarily. wind gusts and humidity made fighting the fire a challenge. >> a shooting at a walmart distribution center. the hospital says one victim has died, four are in fair condition. the shooting happened around 3:30 this afternoon in the tahama county town of red bluff. the sacramento bee says the shooter ran his suv into the building, before opening fire with what appeared to be an ar-type rifle. police then shot the suspected gunman. he has also died. >> a trader joe's shopper in north hollywood had an angry outburst, after being asked to put on a face covering. >> i have a breathing problem! anyone harassing me to wear a mask, you guys are violating federal law. get that on camera! >> a shopper recorded the incident inside the store on friday. the woman was angry after being questioned about why she wasn't wearing a mask. los angeles residents are required to wear face coverings in public, and inside stores, to help the spread of covid-19, help stop it. trader joe's has not commented. >> ucsf school of medicine is learning more about a security system breach that happened earlier this month. the breach happened on june 1st. investigators believe it was opportunist opportunistic malware with no specific target. the attackers did demand for a ransom payment of $1.14 million. the encrypted data is important enough that the university made the decision to pay the ransom for a tool to unlock the data. patient information, covid-19 work, and campus network information, were not exposed. >> all right. getting to our weather situation, here, in san francisco. little bit of that june gloom. but feeling like summer elsewhere, drew. >> yeah, and you know what, dion and eric, what we are going to find tomorrow, area-wide, is cooler air moving in. so going to wipe away any chance of 90 degree heat tomorrowment little more comfortable for a lot of us. live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you right now we have partly to mostly cloudy skies right now. pretty thick fog along the coast. we'll find some coastal drizzle in the early morning hours on our sand. right now, winds are still an issue in some spots. you can see concord gusting close to 30 miles per hour. but it's even stronger through the delta. fairfield has a current wind gust of 46 miles per hour. so the winds are active through the delta and the strait. and that will continue over the next several hours. so it is for that fact, we continue to have a wind advisory in effect for parts of solano county. this will last until 5:00 a.m., early toimorrow morning. after 5:00 a.m., we will likely see those winds subside a little bit below wind-advisory criteria. but, nonetheless, it is breezy in parts of the bay area right now. temperature wise, we are mainly in the 50s and the 60s. thanks to that onshore breeze we had. currently, 58 in fremont. and santa rosa is a cool 54 degrees. so tonight will mainly hold in the 50s. not falling too far from where we are right now in a lot of spots. we will have fog along the coast again. some patchy fog along the base shoreline. and we will find that fog kind of clinging to the coast in the morning tomorrow. tomorrow's a pretty sunny day. equal amounts of sunshine, like we had today. but it is cooler tomorrow. you can see temperatures limited to the 60s and 70s, for the most part. our warmest spots are only going into the 80s. high of only 81 in concord tomorrow, which is below normal for this time of year. 64 in the city. about 70 in oakland. 76 in san jose. and a high of 81 in napa. but we will have issues again with winds tomorrow in certain areas. first thing on our sunday, the winds will be most apparent along the coast. and that does continue into the evening hours. future tracker wind gusts by 5:00 tomorrow evening, it is breezy on the coasts with winds frequently over 30 miles per hour. as we advance the clock late into sunday and into early monday, it looks like the fastest winds will transition into the north bay. and parts of the central valley where we'll likely find winds over 20, if not 30, miles per hour. so combine those winds with our dry jejtation. vegetation. we do have a red-flag warning that will go into effect tomorrow afternoon for northern solano county. it will be dry and it will be windy so we will be on watch for any fires that do spark. they could spread pretty quickly. accu-weather seven-day forecast. it is windy in the north bay for the morning. but then, the winds subside everywhere. not too hot anywhere. we kind of fluctuate into the 80s and lower 90s, eric and dion. we will keep our eye on that but nonetheless, no intense heat which is good news. >> especially for eric. drew, thanks. >> brandon belt enters his tenth season and is feeling great entering this shortened sprint of a regular season. >> for me, going into spring training earlier this year, this is probably the best i've felt in two or three, maybe four, years. so physically, i feel great. you know, for some people that may be feeling it a little bit more, the 60-game season should help but i guess we will have to see. >> while we wait for major league baseball season to begin, we caught up with former a's pitcher and he knows what it's like to play during this pandemic. now playing for the giants in the korean baseball league. while, there's no fans in the stands, he said there's no lack of motivation when he takes the mound. >> when i'm on the mound and there's someone in the box, yes, i want fans there. yes, i want noise. i want that adrenaline rush. but, like, when you're trying to get a hit and i'm trying to get you out because the more outs i get, then, like the better life i get to provide for my calls for continued to grow. protestors taking to the streets, once again, following the death of rayshard brooks, in a wendy's parking lot, at the hands of police. and, in boston, hundreds of mothers of black children taking part in the inaugural march like a mother for black lives event. on friday, police in richmond, virginia, declaring an unlawful assembly at the robert e. lee monument for the second time in three nights. after paintballs were fired at officers and several were hit with hard objects. protestors have been calling for removal of the confederate statue. >> darius says he was victim of racial profiling while at a chipot chipotle restaurant. after a white customer allegedly felt threatened. >> you know, once he said anything, about the police, the first thing that came to my mind was, you know, like my wife. and -- and my little girl. my first thought that came to my mind was i'm not making it back home to them. >> chipotle has suspended the manager involved. releasing a statement, we have a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination of any kind. i hve personally reached out to darius. >> he basically said all the things he was supposed to say. you know, everything he was saying, politically correct, you know, we have zero tolerance of discrimination. this and that. >> said darius's experience demonstrations the struggle so many black americans and people of color face every day. andrew dembert, washington. >> the state of mississippi considering a bill to remove the confederate emblem from the state flag. today, the mississippi state house voted to suspend house rules to allow for the introduction of the bill. tomorrow, the house will take up the bill, itself. and will likely vote to remove the flag. after that, senathe senate need vote before it arrives on the governor's desk. the flag has been the last flag to feature the emblem. >> removing president wilson's name from its school of public policy. the board of trustees also f residential building. he was president of princeton before he became president of the united states. questions over wilson's segregationist policies were made more urgent at the recent deaths of black people at the hands of police. >> democratic party leaders want to remove john wayne's name from orange county airport in santa a ana. recently, condemned remarks wayne made in a 1971 interview with playboy magazine. wayne apparently said he believed in white supremacy, and used a slur that is demeaning to the lgbtq community. wayne lived in orange county for a long time. ad orange county named its airport for wayne, after he died in 1979. >> realtors in one texas city are doing away with the phrase master bedroom. the houston association of realtors is replacing master with primary on its online property database. they regularly review terms to make sure they are consistent with, quote, the current market environment. other groups have, also, dropped the word master, due to its association with slavery. earlier this week, the court of master sommeliers, says they will no longer use the title master before a recipient's last name. >> imperial county and state officials met today to develop plans to deal with the high number of covid-19 cases. and a surge in people being admitted to hospitals. the la times reports imperial county's healthcare system has been overwhelmed at times. and today's meeting came one day after governor gavin newsom urged imperial county to reimpose stricter stay-at-home orders. imperial county has averaged more than 1,100 new cases per 100,000 residents during the past two weeks. >> covid-19 cases are also spiking across america. today, we learned 45,000 more people tested positive for the disease. that's a new single-day record. florida reported 9,600 cases in just 24 hours. abc news reporter karina mitchell tells us more. >> in hard-hit texas, recording 5,700 new cases. governor abbott, admitting, in hindsight, reopening happened too quickly. >> if i could have done anything differently, it would have been to delay the opening of bars. >> in houston, the highest alert now in effect, calling for a return to stay-at-home orders for millions of residents. >> let's be real. we will not get through this, if we don't look at the reality of the situation. >> the sunshine state, florida, also in a state of crisis. thousands now rushing to get tested. miami-dade county beach was shutting for the upcoming fourth of july weekend to help prevent the spread. and florida bars, banned from serving alcohol. >> all of a sudden, we can't even have a cocktail outside. i'm not even near anybody. this is really getting out of hand. >> tonight, new york state investigating a potential cluster. a florida resident who was positive with covid trafficked to the state to attend a drive-thru graduation in westchester. four others testing positive. california's governor calling for a return to stay-at-home order. >> this disease does not take a summer vacation. >> despite rampant spread of the virus, tonight, this new video obtained by "the washington post" from president trump's comeback rally in tulsa, oklahoma, a week ago. workers allegedly moving stickers that say do not sit here, please, hours before his arrival. eight trump campaign staffers testing positive for covid-19, as a result of that rally. dozens quarantined. friday, vice president mike pence, defending the president's large-scale gatherings. >> and even in a health crisis, the american people don't forfeit our constitutional rights. >> the health officials now revealing the vp is postponing campaign events next week in arizona and florida out of an abundance of caution. >> the european union now says it will ban most americans traveling from eu companies because of the dramatic spike in cases here, in the u.s. carina mitchell, abc news, new york. >> dozens filled their cars with care packages. their cars carried food and protective gear, like gloves and masks. our media partner, the mercury news, reports farm workers are considered essential workers. but lots of fruit and vegetables are going unpicked because workers have been getting sick. farm workers make as little as $12,000 a year. so today's care packages will go a long way to help their families. >> in the east bay, a class of engineers in oakland have designed face shields, to be donated to hospitals across the country. madison park academy students created more than 700 face shields, on 3d printers as a way to give back during the pandemic. they did it with the help of a group called 3-d printing friends, which has already made 5,100 shields that madison park students cleaned and packaged. some of the hospitals receiving this batch booking flights at full capacity next week joining united. american says it will notify passengers when a flight is full, and allow them to rebook, at no cost. the change is getting a mixed reaction going to have to because, you know, the flights are picking up. >> united and spirit airlines are already booking flights to capacity. jet blue is blocking middle seats, and some aisle seats, through the end of july. delta and southwest say they are still blocking middle seats, through the end of september. >> you are looking at how a new restaurant in los angeles is trying to attract new customers by using greenhouses to provide diners with an easy way to socially distance. the two month old lady bird cafe has transformed its parking lot into distanced dining pods. each greenhouse can fit up to six diners. and so far, customers feel safe. >> i was a little nervous about eating out, with everything going on. but i actually love the way that they spaced everything out. it felt very secure. >> lady bird's owner says she was inspired by el fresco dining in europe and a restaurant in amsterdam that erected dining greenhouses last month. >> bay-area chefs are auctioning off their time and advice to raise money for immigrant restaurant workers. a little more than $10,000 of the $25,000 goal has been raised. and there's only two days left. the ask chefs anything campaign started two months ago in new york. the public bids on a 30-minute, one-on-one video conversation with top chefs. the money goes to help immigrant workers, who can't get unemployment, and can't qualify for the federal stimulus. as of may, more than 5 million restaurant and bar workers had lost their job because of covid-19. >> those people are instrumental, from farming to building restaurants, to these pretty active winds in parts of the region. from napa to fairfield to concord, you can see surface winds anywhere from 34 to 45 miles per hour. we still have that wind advisory for solano county in effect till tomorrow morning. some patchy fog along the bay shoreline. numbers in the low to mid-50s as your starting temperatures tomorrow morning. now, tomorrow is a pretty sunny day. even along the coast, we will see some peeks of sunshine. temperatures will be in the mid-60s to mid-70s along the bay shoreline. our hottest spots are only in the low 80s so not too warm of a day when we talk about late june. however, it is windy in parts of the bay area tomorrow. monday, it's windy in the morning. then, winds really subside everywhere and that leads to pretty nice week ahead. a lot of sunshine and temperatures in the 70s and 80s, eric and dion. so not too hot. and thankfully, those winds are going to die down pretty quickly. >> eric, you are going to be okay. i promise. see? drew just proved it. >> okay, i'm going to hold you to that. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11. the san francisco lgbtq bars hit hard by the coronavirus for generations, bars have offered the lgbtq community a safe place to gather. but the coronavirus is strangling many of them. >> abc 7 news anchor tells us why some of these bars are worried about their ability to survive the pandemic. >> the stud bar at the corner of 9th and harrison streets in san francisco has been welcoming the lgbtq community south of market since 1966. >> there aren't too many places like the stud, that give people permission to, not only be themselves but, to imagine who they could be. >> known for its drag shows, the stud has been a welcoming space for the community, for generations. it survived disco. but it couldn't outlive the novel coronavirus. the stud is just one of the many queer spaces that are wondering if the pandemic will kill their business. >> no one saw covid coming. no stuck here, months at a time, with absolutely zero income and no idea of when that would change. >> the stud closed its doors when shelter-in-place orders went into effect in march and when they weren't able to pay rent, they something i wasn't. >> she started working at the stud in the 1990s. she said the club would survive but would lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in income. >> we, luckily, got the payroll protection plan from the government. so we've been able to pay our employees. >> the payroll protection plan will help a big bar, but not a small one, like aunt charlie's lounge. it's the last lgbtq bar in the tenderloin neighborhood. >> in the '70s, it was you go in one bar. if you didn't see what you liked, you just go next door to another. >> the owner decided the bar would close on august 1st. dj myles cooper wasn't going to let that happen. he started a go fund me campaign to save the bar, hoping to raise $100,000. it did, and more. >> we need to save spaces like this, because they serve the community every single day. it's not just during pride month. it's not just an event. it, really, is an anchor for this community. >> bars have historically been a safe space for lgbtq people to meet and socialize. >> i met my husband here 30 years ago. >> bruce is an owner of the saloon. he isn't worried about the cllent closure of hisuss. the fulsome street fairs, cancelled as well. all, huge events that usually bring in big crowds to area bars. >> they're a really big part of our business. and really, what kind of keep us through the rest of the year. and those are gone now. >> 4,000, 5,000 people, coming into and out of the bar. >> the owner of fs eagle says the loss of those big events will add up to big losses but not just for his bar but for the many nonprofit organizations that use his bar to raise money for charity. >> i think that the most important thing that we lost is touch with our community and our mission of creating a safe space for everybody. >>
