No strings attached. As we mentioned, today is juneteenth. An outcry over the killing of africanamericans by police is adding a new layer of significance to this already bittersweet day, both the celebration of freedom and an acknowledgement of the grave injustices suffered by black people in this country. Reporter what is juneteenth . It is the oldest known celebration commemorating the endsing of slavery in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation freeing enslaved africanamericans in the United States in 1862. The 13 amendment passed Congress Officially abolishing the institution of slavery in 1863. It would take years for word to spread. On june 19, 1865, Union Soldiers led by Major General gordon granger, landed at galveston, texas, with news the civil war was over and the roughly 250,000 enslaved people there were now free. The orders read, the people of texas are informed that in accordance with the proclamation from the executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed they will not be allowed to check at military posts and they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere. You might be wondering why it took so long to spread the word. General robert e. Lee surrendered in april, 1865. But unit troops didnt arrive until june. The emancipation proclamation only freed end slaved africans in the Confederate States liberated by federal troops and that dm include texas. Those states were lawfully freed but far from free. Many were even punished for trying to take advantage of their new rights. One former slave recalled seeing people shot and hanged after trying to he is came to freedom. And another shared an account of being asked to work another six years and being whipped just lying she was before. Even though the newly freed in texas didnt receive the full benefits of freedom, they turned the day into a celebration. June 19th was coined june teenlth. A blending of the words june and 19th. Every year it became a chance for people on get together with family members, measure progress with freedom and the importance of selfill improvement. They would read the emancipation proclamation, share meals and played games. Many of those same events take place in celebrations across the country. Texas became the first state to make juneteenth an official holiday in 1980. Since then, 46 other states and the district of columbia have recognized juneteenth as a state holiday or holiday observance. Although not a federal holiday, many Global Companies like twitter, square, nike and lyft have made it a holiday in a protest to end racism sparked by the death of george floyd in minneapolis, minnesota. Today more than 150 years after celebrations began, june 19th is about remembering the past and moving toward a future that involves an absolute equal of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves. Juneteenth. A celebration of freedom and the fight for its fulfillment. That was a great explainer. If you want to he sue it again, you can find on it our website. Abc7 news doc. Dr. Jones heads usfs institute for nonviolence and social justice and served as a speefl writer and counsellor for Martin Luther king jr. He went a step further saying this as the participation of White America in the protests. It is the most profound change i have ever seen in any social movement in my lifetime. Theres some perspective. Dr. Jones added, he is awed in particular by the sincerity of young White Americans as they chant the phrase, black lives matter. As we continue on the theme of juneteenth and the National Conversation about race, were joined by the Cornell University professor. Professor, i know this is the second time youre joining us this week. Thanks for making some time for us. Thanks for inviting me. You wrote an op ed saying Police Brutality cannot be separated from our history which includes slave slavery. How do you see the two being connected . Well, some researchers have argued that policing protocols originated in slave patrols. So in that sense there is a very weighted and particularly problematic inheritance that we still need to grapple with. You see that continuing even though were generations removed from that . Its possible. When thinking of the unconscious biases in some cases, that create these gross disparities between how black citizens are treated, encounters with law enforcement, versus some others, especially whites, it becomes obvious in some ways. So that in some cases, the attempt is to deescalate. In others, the result is a very tragic outcome as weve seen recently in the case of in atlanta. You have a book coming out about the role women have played in playing stereo times and you go from rosa parks and Condoleezza Rice and beyonce in entertainment. In your view, how important have women been in this change in our society . Oh, my. I think women have very much been at the forefront of the struggles. And have done the everyday ground work to keep them going and to get the work done in some cases. Even as theyve been silenced and marginalized in the rhetoric. Like say her name is a movement all about throwing the victims of black women i mean, black women who have been victims at the hands of law enforcement, so that Breonna Taylors case or tatyana jeffersons case, or sandsra bland. Youve written about brands such as aunt jemima. Give me your reaction to that, that theyre going to change the names . I think it is an interesting and good step. I dont think that it should be the only thing. We can talk about symbols, but then also, i think it is equally important to address inequities in work cultures, to address climate issues, to make sure that theyre diverse, to increasingly ensure that the work places are safe. And welcoming for a range of people. And also that more efforts are made to Impact Communities that surround them, to engage those communities. There is a lot that can be done. It will definitely require more and more thinking outside the box. I want to get your take on it. I read a piece today from a publication in chicago that quoted the great grandson of a woman who portrayed aunt jemima and was employed for a time going around the country to represent the brand. And he was upset, feeling that she was being canceled, and marginalized and removed. I dont know if you saw the piece. Give me your take only. Thats the other side. I think i did come across that. If this is the grandson, one of the descendants of nancy green, who was the earliest ill personator of aunt jemima. I think it is important to be respectful to the legacies of various people who have given their all across time, embodying certain personas because they were making the most of the time in which they lived. I think of Patty Mcdaniel who portrayed the nanny character with so much iciness in gone with the wind. Definitely brought a lot of dignity to that caring. That doesnt necessarily mean that we have to remain in that place of stereotyping and otherness. So while i understand the personal concerns, we need to recognize these symbols are still very problematic. That they represent a time in which blacks were expected to be subordinate because they were perceived to be inferior. So what happens when we replace the symbols that have pre dominated with more empowering images . Professor, thank you for your time. Have a great weekend. You too. Thank you so managing type 2 diabetes . Youre on it. Exercising often and eating healthy . Yup, on it there too. You may think youre doing all you can to manage type 2 diabetes and heart disease. For over three months the fair monday mission inn and spa has been closed because of the coronavirus. Now that shelterinplace orders are living and businesses are able to reopen, the team is working hard to welcome visitors once again. We spoke with the general manager to learn about the changes going into if he can at the property. Hello. Welcome to wine country. Im the general manager here at the beautiful fair mondmont inn spa. Weve been closed nearly three months now. It was the saddest day of my career. The main thing is the protocols to make sure that everything is correctly sanitized and we keep our social distance. From the guests and the guests from us. We have a 48hour waiting period, just a resting period, when he we strip the room and let it rest for 48 hours before we check the next guest in. We have the glass screens at the front desk and the staff that will be wearing face masks. We have Hand Sanitizer stations, at the front drive, at the front desk, at the elevators, and also signage as well. Upon arrival, well be issuing face masks to our guests and encouraging them to wear them while indoors and around the property. We have these kits with Hand Sanitizer for every guest staying with us. We will send a pre arrival confirmation letter and it will outline the protocol. Well sanitize your luggage upon arrival and well make sure that we do a deep clean in that room. Then well go ahead and seal that room with a piece of tape on the door jam so you know no one else has been there. There is a whole check list that weve had to go through. It has to be signed off by my boss to say that it is okay to open on july 1st. It is everything from bringing back the colleagues, two hours of training, we go thank you Temperature Check protocols and our health check protocols for people coming into work, mandatory ppp for colleagues, masks, gloves in high touch areas, making sure theres social distancing in our cafeteria. All those things are part of the protocols to make sure, not only are our colleagues safe but also our guests are safe at the same time. Our room service is suspended at the moment until we finds out more about how covid19 is being passed from one person to another. Unformerly, the spa wont be opening on july 1st. Were still waiting for guidance. The main pool will be open. We have social distancing of six feet between every two lounge chairs out by the pool. We have cabbanas as well where you can have as a family, your own cab ana. You can also keep your social distance from other guests staying at the hotel. We know that it is impacting our business levels. When we have to rest a room for 48 hours. We have to limit the capacity at the pool. When we have to keep our social distance. When we are offering Shuttle Service into town or valet parking. Thats hurting our business financially short term but we are true believers that in the long term, it is the right thing to do so the guests have the confidence to know staying with us was a safe thing to do. All right. So the reopening is happening. City leaders up and down the bay area have been working on legislation and Community Efforts to give businesses a boost. Joining us now, the do you mean manage we are the city of san jose. Good to see you. Thank you. Great to be here. So you head up the Emergency Operations centers Small Business liaison branch. Clearly a new branch that the plight of business falls under the purrview of Emergency Operations. Is that right . It does. So are your businesses currently facing a dire emergency . How are you helping them . The good news is things are looking much better for businesses down now that our, more and more of the restrictions are beng lifted around the shelterinplace. We were able in down san jose and throughout san jose to start the down dining and instore shopping a couple weeks bag. The city has tried to support businesses by relaxing some of the restrictions previously in place so that businesses could take both their dining and their other Business Operations out to the outdoors. So whether that be the sidewalk or private property thats ajason end to their business, we want to do everything we can to important them. Got it. What are your businesses telling you in terms of the fact that Santa Clara County seems to be lagging behind, in terms of reopening, you dont have Indoor Dining yet. Are the businesses feeling like they are able to attract shoppers and customers in the way that theyre allowed to operate right now . Things in san jose are certainly looking much better than they did a couple weeks ago. Certainly, still not anywhere near 100 . Not anywhere near where businesses want to be operating, both with their indoor and their outdoor capacities. But having the restrictions lifted to do Outdoor Dining, and the beautiful weather that we have in san jose, all make for success in inviting mers back downtown, inviting customers back into our businesses in the city of san jose. Im just noticing your virtual background seems to be the tech museum area. You have that, the sap the convention central. None of those are open yet and those are big draws for people. Correct. We still cant bring people back to sap central for conventions and gatherings. Our businesses are open, our restaurants are open, our shops are open. Theyre anxious and eager to serve their customers. You can see, a lot of businesses have been very successful in pivoting their Business Model during the shelterinplace. Doing things very creative and resilient. We had a new business opening actually in down san jose during the shelterinplace. Skolts seafood relocated from their Current Location along the that a say over san antonio and that was really a celebrate spot in the saga. It is nice to see the adaptation happening. I did read about that. Scotts. And i want to visit down san jose. Best luck to yo time for the four at 4 00. Hello there, michael. And spencer joining us. Are you ready to get started . All right. According to a new survey, Many Americans believe were at a turning point in the struggle for racial equal. So Public Relations firm says nearly 65 of people surveyed believe the protests surrounding George Floyds death are really a turning appoinment but theyre divided on how long it will take to reach racial equality. 19. 5 say one to five years. 19. 2 say five to ten years. And 31 say well never have racial equality. Wait. There was another option i saw earlier. It was like 50 to 100 years. Thats what i voted for. I forget the percentage. What do you think . How many years, spencer in. You and i see so many things the same way. Again . I would have picked 50 to 100 years. Not because im not optimistic but because ive lived a lot of this history. In 1967, president johnson appointed the commission to look at cities exploding with violence. 1968, they returned the report. 52 years ago citing things like Police Brutality, inequities in housing, herrialth care, job opportunities, and here we are, 52 years later, talking about the same thing. But i am encouraged by the protests and mass illustrations. I think things will improve but not any time soon. What do you think, michael . How many years . Its kind of depressing to me. When do you the math, you look at the numbers. 42. 5 say 50 years until never. Thats a bummer. Im with you guys. I dont think that it is 50 to 100. I do think probably 50 to 75. And for all the reasons spencer just said. I agree with him. You look at all the studies, all the attention on it. In 1968 and then this is as far as we got . This is it . On the other hand, when you look out on the street and see who is there, including both my children, your children too, im sure, spencer, you see a lot better. Its taken us a long time to get to this spot, a few hundred yers. It will take a while to resolve it. Many californiians may find it difficult to skraf their lottery itch. The state lottery is facing a shortage of scratchoff tickets due to covid19. The report says social distancing guidelines and Distribution Centers near sacramento have caused a slowdown in production. To make matters worse, it will hurt retailers and could mean the loss of millions of dollars in revenue for the state. Does this mean it might be easier for those of houstus who to win . Im not sure. I have to tell you, could not cyr , consumer advocates are saying cry me a river. You look at the lottery itself. Across the board, every demographic plays it. When you look at scratchers, it is majorly low income people. So a lot of them abuse go people need to win 50 bucks. So yeah. You wont get a lot of sympathy from me. Im in that crowd. One thing we havent talked a lot about are the ramifications of lower taxation revenues coming in and all the social Service Programs that will be impacted by that. Thats the trickle do you effect. The trickle down effect. Im with michael. I do have a friend who likes to give scratcher tickets so ive played them order the course of the last three years and you definitely do a little less than break even will you lose money. Thats the way the lottery system is set up. Totally. All right. Lets talk about this. Sports and outdoor wear brand is doing an about face with facebook. Thats a lot of faces. The company is ending paid advertising on facebook saying that it is allowing racist conten and disinformation to propagate. The move comes after the naacp and the anl Defamation League called for advertisers to pull their money from facebook in july. North face issued a statement saying we stand with the naacp and the other organizations who are working to hash stop hate for profit. Kind of like the latest slap in the face for facebook, spencer. Facebook is getting slammed around a lot these days. Im beginning to feel sorry for it, sort of. I think ill stop it right there. Yeah. Especially, michael, if you compare them to twitter, right . Which has been a lot stronger in terms of coming out and putting labels on things that are not true and kind of taking the perspective of having to educate people. What do you think . Does that make facebook look even worse . You know what i think, is that we always tell consumers, vote with your dollars, vote with your feet. I think we need to hold businesses and corporations to the exact same standard. When theyre advertising, we should say they believe in the policy. Not necessarily the politics but the policy of the people that theyre advertising with. And we should hold them to the same standard. They need to hold the advertising medium. Ill surprise thered hasnt been a huge pushback against facebook from users who are frustrated with, despite the fact they have billions of dollars, they cant do this, they cant do that, they wont do this, they wont do that. They need a competitor. But i dont think nap chat is the competitor. Although theyre apologizing for their juneteenth filth per allowed users to smile and break the changes. Filters are design overlays that users can add to the top of their posts. According to it, the juneteenth filter came under fire shortly after its release. It was demonstrated on twitter this morning before the company took it down. Saying this juneteenth filter is interesting. Snap chat issued an apology saying the filler has not gone through its usual review protocols. Spencer, let me know if youre with me on this. I envision a Conference Room with everybody gathered around saying, this juneteenth thing will be big. How do we capitalize on this . He know youre huge on the snap. So give me your thoughts. Thanks for reminding me. Ive never, ever used nap chat. My bad. I have no idea what this is all about. I dont mind confessing that until i prepare for the segment. I looked at it and i thought, yeah, what is that supposed to do for juneteenth . I dont really get snap chat, right . You deal with so Many Companies and their line about how, we did not go through the usual protocols. It is like, a boilerplate statement. In other words, we screwed up. Sorry. Yeah. I think thats what it is saying. They were not looking at it probably from the perspective that maybe spencer and i can come from just by having a certain amount of age. Weve seen powerless people told to smile our entire lives. So i think the people doing it were probably young and thought someone smiling is wonderful.
