We are back with images showing just one of several fastmoving wildfires burning in arizona right now. Thousands of people have been evacuated and several highways are either fully or partially closed. So far no structures have been damaged, but flames have scorched more than 300 square miles. As we officially head into summer tomorrow, several states are reporting soaring Coronavirus Infection rates. 20 states are seeing increasing numbers of new virus cases. 18 have growing rates of hospitalizations. California is among the states that just set a daily record for new cases. That forced governor gavin newsom to require everyone to wear a mask when in public. Those soaring infection rates in the south have some governors from former hot spots in the north considering travel restrictions, but are they effective . I spoke earlier with dr. David eisenman. Were seeing troubling coronavirus numbers across much of the south, including in texas and arizona. New yorks governor says he might issue a quarantine order for people coming from florida due to the rising number of cases there. Should states take this type of action to stop the spread of the coronavirus . There have already been ten states that have or have had travel restrictions. Im really not sure how much they really accomplished by doing so. Generally these travel restrictions have not been well enforced. Theyre very easy to skirt and to get around. And just as an example, florida restricted travel from new york and the tristate area back in march, and now look, theyre having a rising number of cases. So i think a lot of those kind of travel restrictions end of being more sort of covid theater and political than they really are public health. And probably more valuable in a community where covids already established itself, such as new york, to make sure that people are doing things like Wearing Masks and social distancing than to worry about the travelers from florida. California is now requiring masks in public. Other cities and states are considering rules. Do you think it will make a difference . And whats the latest research on the effectiveness of wearing a mask . Theres actually two studies in the last couple of weeks that have shown me even more evidence that maskwearing is really vital as a tool to fighting this pandemic. Especially indoors, but also outdoors if youre in a crowd or if youre in a group setting. Wearing a mask reduces the risk of spreading it from yourself, and we know that people can spread it way before they feel sick. It also may have some blockage of the virus into you. Not as much as it does out of you, but it may also prevent you from inhaling it. On this juneteenth, what medical advice would you give to black people as minority communities still struggle with the coronavirus . I would say that we have to stand up for the fact that racism is fundamentally behind the coronavirus pandemic, just as it is with so many other Health Disparities in this country, and that fighting against the systemic racism is a fight against pandemic coronavirus. And our thanks to dr. David eisenman on that last point. The point is that when it comes to bias and systemic racism, when it comes to treating people in these minority communities, it could really have an impact, and thats why advocating for yourself is so important. Because we know the stats, and we know that you can do whatever possible to make sure that your health is priority number one. Exactly. Coming up, the Peanut Butter life hack we never knew we needed.
