Here in florida, cases have been climbing for about two weeks and officials are watching closely and the mayor of the city of miami telling gma over the weekend, he would not rule out issuing another stayathome order if cases continue to rise. This morning the spread of covid19 show nothing signs of slowing across nearly half the country. Over the weekend 22 states reporting alarming increases in their daily number of new cases. Florida experiencing a steady climb for nearly two weeks with the last two days topping 2,000 new cases each, seeing as high as a 35 rise between friday and saturday. Floridas governor explaining the rise is due to increased testing in nursing homes, agricultural communities and prisons. We cant just ascribe this to increase testing. This is a real increase in case numbers. Reporter university of south florida professor dr. Thomas unash says in reality as much as 60 of the new cases can be attributed to asymptomatic spreaders, and if things dont turn around, the state could see 10,000 new cases every day. If we continue at the rate that were moving right now and dont really do much else, well probably see around 12,000 to 13,000 cases in the first week in july. Reporter nearly every beach in the Sunshine State has officially reopened. Some experts hoped the virus would struggle in the summer heat, but as the temperature has risen in some areas, so have the numbers. Reporter the average age of patients is dropping but new york, once considered the epicenter of the virus, recorded its lowest number of deaths and hospitalizations since the beginning of the outbreak. But scenes like these from over the weekend of crowded bars and restaurants waving a red flag for the governor. Dont think, well, now were reopening, everything is fine. You stop doing what youre doing, youll see those numbers turn. Reporter and in an interview over the weekend dr. Turning now to washington and that stunning report that President Trumps niece is coming out with a tellall book about her family and revealing she has been a key anonymous source for reporters looking into the president s finances. Senior White House Correspondent cecilia vega has more on this story. Good morning, cecilia. Reporter hey, amy, good morning. This was one of the biggest mysteries involving the trump administration. Who leaked this trove of documents to the New York Times in 2018 that raised such serious questions about the president s finances. Well, the daily beast is claiming that source, as you said, was the president s own niece, mary trump. This is the daughter of his deceased brother fred jr. And she is now planning to publish a tellall book this summer. Mary trump, she is largely kept out of the public eye but she has been involved in a bitter family court battle over her grandfathers will. And as you said she was reportedly behind that trove of documents in the times that alleged fraud and the Family Finances and contradicted the president s claim that his father had only lent him a small loan to jump start his company, when it was actually the equivalent of hundreds of millions of dollars, but amy, this book is set to come out in august. That will be just weeks before the republican convention. All right, and, cecilia, President Trump announcing he is pushing back that Campaign Rally originally scheduled for juneteenth, this friday. Whats behind the turnaround here . Reporter well, this was the president s first rally it will be the president s first rally since the pandemic set to take place in tulsa. Initially planned for juneteenth, the day that commemorates the end of slavery. After much backlash, the campaign rescheduled for saturday, but now tulsas Health Director says he wishes the president would postpone altogether. Covid infections are on the rise in tulsa. While the Campaign Says there will be safety precautions in place, they havent said what those are and, amy, now attendees are being asked to not hold the campaign responsible if they contract covid at this rally. All right, cecilia vega, we appreciate it. Thank you. Of course states reopening could lead to a surge in cars on the road. Reporter hey, whit, good morning to you. Yeah, while traffic is light. Data shows its picking up and when people finally go back to work, one expert predicts a carmageddon. This morning, as more cities reopen, one major traffic expert predicts unprecedented road congestion is ahead. Youre really predicting what you call a carmageddon. So it could be 10 , 20 , 30 higher than what weve seen and traffic could come to a standstill. Reporter sam schwartz, the man who coined the term gridlock, says by labor day, expect those fearful of taking Public Transit to hit the roads in their own cars. He said the rush hour commute could triple in length. If your period is usually two hours long it may become a four to sixhour window. Ill tell you its from 8 00 a. M. To 10 00 a. M. And may now be from 6 00 to 11 00 a. M. Reporter take for example the long island expressway in new york. Right now traffic data shows cars are going faster than 50 Miles Per Hour, but after labor day, this is what schwartz thinks it might look like. Every inch packed with slowmoving traffic. In chicago, the kennedy expressway where before the pandemic, cars traveled at an average speed of 5 Miles Per Hour during rush hour may move even slower this fall, and its not just those commuting to work. A new survey shows dramatically more vacationers are planning road trips, 62 planning to travel by car. Thats up 72 from last summer. And we should tell you even though some people think Public Transit helps spread the virus, research has not shown that. Those studies continue. But no matter what, the most important prevention tool, a mask. Amy. Gio, thank you. Now to that breaking news this morning.
