This is an important time for an important conversation. And i think the first thing i would suggest to parents is, one is, be open about it. We need to keep our goals in mind. That this is not just about explaining events to youngsters, to our children and teens. But rather, creating the lack of a better term, a narrative. A way of understanding it. It is an opportunity for character development. For everyone. An opportunity to instill hope, a sems of efficacy, what i would call realisticment on mix. And history need not be destiny. So a lot of issues really at play here. What are some important things for parents to do when having a conversation with their children . Specifically about the protests . First i would say, your deper child, your ethnic dierro a very young child. The second is to validate their experience. Talk to them about their thoughts and feelings. When we talk about young children, ive heard some parents talk so adoringly about how their child is color blind. They have friends of all different races. They dont realize race. Then ive heard those parents not wanting to talk about race with their child because they dont want to burst that sweet innocence their child has. Would you suggest being proactive . How do you put it . It is a conversation. For sure, youngsters have a certain color blindsness, if they havent acquired it early on, toddlers, preschoolers. It is worth noting. Theyll be perceptive of the world around they will. As they meet people who are different from them, theyll begin making these discriminations. How does this individual different from me . It could be in the color of skin, type of hair, variables looking for commonality and difference. And you can talk about that in an honest way. There are lots of differences in the world in the w
