When the peaceful protests honoring george floyd ended. Well, three of the four Minneapolis Police officers charged in connection with the death of george floyd are due court today. They will have their Court Appearance today. Charged with aiding and abetting Second Degree murder. The Minnesota Attorney general also announced an upgraded charge for the officer scene with his knee pressed into floyds neck. Derek chauvin faces Second Degree murder. Spoke with a former prosecutor on his take on these new charges. A prosecutor in the bay area for several years and also a Police Commissioner and he says people rallying for justice should feel good about a Second Degree murder charge for derek chauvin. For anyone who thinks that is not. It is 20 years in prison. It screams out to me as a murder case, not first degree murder. Its not premeditated from what i can see. Not one of these specified felonies, but a solid Second Degree murder case just as if somebody said im going to go kill him. Keep in mind that 40 years in prison for this officer could be a life sentence because of his age. Hammer says going for a first degree murder charge could ruin the case if you dont have enough evidence to convict. He also says its challenging to convict Police Officers but he thinks there is a strong chance with the Second Degree charge. Happening today, the first Memorial Service to honor george floyd. It is set to get under way later this morning in minneapolis held at North Central university. Hundreds of people are expected to attend even though the memorial is being called a private event for family and friends and people invited by the floyd family. U. S. Civil rights Attorney Benjamin Crump is expected to speak and todays memorial is the first of several events taking place in three states over the next six days. The service is scheduled to begin at 11 00 this morning and that means our program midday live will air an hour earlier at 10 00 a. M. Lawmakers are working on a sweeping packaresn response to George Floyds death and it could become the most ambitious effort that weve seen in years. Jobina is at the live desk with more. Jobina . Kumasi, Congressional Democrats are leading the reform and are petitioning lawmakers in the house and senate to support the changes. Were learning this morning one proposal in congress is expected to include an overhaul of Police Accountability laws and lawmakers are also helping to create a database of police use of force incidents and also circling back to a bill first proposed in 2015 that would ban the use of choke holds. Former Vice President joe biden has endorsed that idea. The Congressional Black Caucus is pushing for revamped training requirements at Police Departments nationwide. We could see some of the proposed changes push through very quickly. The House Majority leader has told reporters he could call lawmakers back to washington to vote before their scheduled. Some of our officers actually participated in some of the protests and joined the protesters and taking a knee in honor of mr. George floyd and it was a very moving, moving moment for a lot of people. There were thousands of people at this march and the police chief said its just a testament of the spirit of the city of San Francisco that people were able to show up like this and not have any major problems. Federal investigators are looking for 29 firearms that were stolen from a hayward gun store during a looting incident over the weekend. The atf and the National Shooting Sports Foundation is offering a 10,000 reward in this case. It happened at richardson tactical which is on national avenue. Investigators say a pretty large group between 30 and 40 people broke into the shop late tuesday night and stole the guns. We have black family members. We have black friends. I have black coworkers. This matters to me. This is important to me and i dont want to in 20 years i dont want to look back and not be able to say that i was here standing up for people. Stand up, fight back. Only 14 and 15. They didnt grow up knowing that its either black or white. They grew up knowing that were all equal. So, when these things are happening, it messes them up. What do we want . Justice. Personally feel the have been leading the protest with the brutality that were protesting. Fire crews in south san jose trying to get a handle on this brush fire. The fire is burning near heartland way and san felipe road in the california oak creek neighborhood. The San Jose Fire Department says it received several calls about the fire around 3 00 this morning. It is now at five acres and slowly spreading. 60 firefighters on the scene right now and the good news no homes are threatened. Crews say it took them an hour to get access to the fire because the terrain there is so difficult. We do have a crew on the way to the scene and, of course, give you updates throughout the morning. Moving forward into the actions of their officers firing five shots through the windshield of that Police Cruiser hitting killing 22yearold sean moid it appeared he would get into a get away car and instead kneeled and placed his hands above his waist and thats when an officer said he thought he saw a gun in monterrosas sweatshirt but it was just a hammer. Fired five shots through his windshield hitting and killing the 22yearold. Ill say this, maam, when they responded to that area to the walgreens, the intent was to stop the looting and to arrest any perpetrators, if necessary. The officers reacted to a perceived threat. Vallejo pd said there were two get away cars tuesday night. One rammed a responding Police Vehicle and they eventually caught one of the cars full of suspect in orxcontra c they have45ays to le bodyro the of this incident and police chief shawny willem is says he plans on doing it sooner. All the officers involved in this incident are on paid administrative leave as this investigation continues. Reporting live this morning, julian glover, abc7 news. All right, thank you, julian. Well, this morning we are learning more about the young woman shot by Police Tuesday night after she allegedly ran over a protester in san jose. Police chief eddie garcia said orozco hit the protester between fourth and fifth street. Police say orozoco drove away avoiding police until the car was located near a parking garage on east mission street. The suspect did not follow the officer command and drove backwards towards the officer. The officer fired at least once at the suspect. Both orozco and the victim were transported to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries and no officers injured either. Charged with felony hit and run and assault with a Deadly Weapon on a police officer. San Francisco Police chief bill scott says 20 to 25 people were arrested in the Mission District at 20th and mission. Sky7 was overhead when they were being detained. They said the group dumped trash and acting beligerant. They did not want to take away from a peaceful protest earlier in the day where many thousands of people gathered. These killers and these murders, police when they kill innocent. A lot less likely that likell be hurt or killed. After dark, the protests snaked peacefully through the streets for miles after landing at city hall and the hall of justice. And a peaceful crowd gathered near Oakland City Hall last night. Sky7 above the rally to protest the killing of george floyd and curfew in effect for at least one more night. Thousands of people were at 14th and broadway where there were a number of speakers. Am eny ta many talked about how the narrative does not change going forward. We are out here speaking our own opinion about what is going on. It is not right. But the problem is that we have to do this in order for them to realize were not playing any more. I think that people are waking up. I think people are understanding more and more how unjust this system of policing we have now. But im not here for reform. Im here for abolishing the police. Many businesses have boarded up out of fear that there could be more looting. A large police presence, that included officers from other cities stayed on the outskirts of the rally and no problems were reported. Curfew orders have now expired in San Francisco, san jose, santa rosa and san mateo county. They all ended at 5 00 a. M. The order covering unincorporated parts of napa county have expired too. The curfew in Solano County expired at 5 00. Today marks the first Memorial Service to honor george floyd and all four officers are now facing charges. The other three officers who were at the scene are charged are charged with aiding and abetting. So, we believe that and we also can see what was not done. That even despite the pleas and the cries, there was no assistance rendered. Even after the arrest, tens of thousands of people took to the streets yesterday for peaceful protests in places like new york, denver and san diego. The Alarming Number of people that are continuing to file for unemployment because of the covid19 pandemic continues this morning. Just minutes ago the u. S. Labor Department Released the latest jobless claims so we can see those numbers right now. 1. 9 million americans have filed for unemployment that is of last week. But here is a number to focus on. There are now 21. 5 million continuing jobless claims worse than wall street expected. More than 42. 5 million claims have been filed in the last 11 weeks. However, it is the ninth straight weekly decline since peaking at the end of march. So, that is the positive there and tomorrow the Labor Department will release the may Unemployment Rate and the number of jobs lost. Orders counties to open polling places for inperson voting at least three days before election day which is november 3rd. Counties also must make drop boxes available for voters to submit completed ballots starting on october 6th. The governor ordered that every registered voter in california get a votebymail ballot.
