Joining me is a very special guest im excited and honored and kind of nervous to have on. Executive producer of united shades of america cammal. Thank you for coming on the show. Im a little nervous. Nothing to be nervous about with me. Im a college dropout. It was an ivy league school, the university of pennsylvania, that you dropped out of it. I dropped out of the best. You usually make us laugh and showing up for it. All right, cool, were going back air. While making us think about what and we are black with it means to be black in america. Executive producer and host of cnns united shades of america, serious issues. Really, today, there is not much and oakland resident e w kamau bell. Here is a question, what are you doing to take care of your to talk about. Yeah, if you go on twitter, you go to find black people who Mental Health during this time. Are posting and finding ways to you make jokes. Laugh. It releases tension. And avoiding the idea. Im turtling up. Nows the time where artists, i sent it out on twitter earlier comedians, writers are today. I was responding to a friend of challenged to do our work while mine. My wife has to remind me to go all this is still going on. And so much is going on. Otside. My wife has to remind to eat. America is really a powder keg right now. Orly stay in my office like we see military vehicles outside this. Of the white house right now. And before i did this, i took a right now there is a possibility that President Trump will speak nature walk with my 5yearold. Shortly. He was telling governors they that to me was a like, whoo, we have been weak. Just went and looked at animals they need to dom that it. And we ran across a couple deer we have seen protestors and journalists pepper sprayed, and took flower pictures for her arrested. We have curfews. Its just your take. Home work. You have a wellinformed take. Also its a great time to watch what do you think is an dumb youtube videos and a great expression of . We cant separate this from time too watch clueless reality the pandemic, i know you said that is what you normally talk shows. About on this show. Thank you, disney but i feel like that is why its happening right now. People are feeling for scared. For the last dance. On behalf of our parent in the covid19 era, they are feeling afraid, hopeless, they cant get access to health care. Company, your welcome. I have to be honest. The black and Brown Community are e seeing people die at a and answering that question, for me, i have been eating a lot higher rate and there is no sense that the government is of sour dough that my husband is coming to help us in any substantial way. Baking and that is helpful toll if the government said, we are me, and going on walks and going to say we will make it diving into to work. I feel like we are making a whole until you get through difference talking about these this, you can pay your rent you things, right . Are not on the front lines, i i tell you im going to say a lot of wrong thing hads and you think it looks different. Go, yeah, there might be protests but i dont know if they are e ruptdirupts you im glad i got to around the world. You mention economics, if people had money, means a support their family. Is that adding to it . I mistook her for another its not just the Police American who worksed if abc news, and im owning it. This is how it works and i have brutality or the death of george goose pimples are going yeah, this is how it works. Floyd, oscar grant, trayvon own your mistakes, step in the martin, all that adding up. Mistake, step through the is it fear that im going to go mistake. That is because we know each out as a black person, and i others intentions are totally cant make a living here in pure and innocent. America. I think that every time a video comes out that shows a we dont harbor hate or look at black person being abused, people in a certain lens. Killed by the police, it feels you have to look at the whole. Like, okay, this has to stop. That is an important lesson to so i think that happens. Us all. I feel its really easy for but again, people, as i wrote on people to grab on with twitter, its hard to start a riot when everyone has a good job, has access to health care, education, and it feels like look at everything. I think a lot are of it is they are well protected by the social media. People will take one post and police force. Its hard to get them to be with you will post one thing and you while they throw a brick in someone will respond with 20 and its like, no, i was just saying a target window. And black feels feel completely one thing. And i think also, i think we use social media as a way to abandoned by the government on a vent anger we couldnt feel free good day. But this is an especially bad to vent in real lives and its day. People have more time and pentup frustrations to get out in the almost pretend target practice. Streets. Given that, what do you think the solution is . What do you think our leaders and when we do make mistakes, need to start doing . Like i just did, you have to say you know, i mean, i heard oops. About trump calling the the quicker you own up to your governors weak, i thought, what is your response as the governor mistake, the quicker you get to your healing. The Police Departments and if the president calls you weak, its bigger than oops, let me be and you had very little support clear. They dont own up to the from trump and the government. Mistake, sometimes ever, and i feel like the politicians at the top, what is a senators certainly when they do it takes days. That is why i think maybe we are seeing something change for real this time. Response, they have to do a better job of confronting him and working hard to get around you saw several Police Chiefs him so they can actually promote come right out, not just the justice and equity. Now it feels like there is a minneapolis one but other agencies who are usually stalemate up there. Hesitant to take a step to as much as i like to hear nancy criticize someone else in blue, but to say that is fwhonot what pelosi make fun of him, what is it going . Do, that is wrong, and we have and ultimately, those of us who seen that and that could be real change. Yeah, i think what does it live in the city, we have to look like in six months, a year . Trust the organizers to do what we can. A lot of times, you see a lot of we have to put pressure on them. Dr. Martin luther king said talk around these times. But what is the instructional riot is the language of the change that comes out of it, unheard. Is that the missage that is that is the question. Unheard, that black america has do you been trying to send forever . That would have helped in the that we need to not worry about 90s. But were not the in the 09 s our safety when were throughout anymore. We are not, but in and we need a way to make sure we are enjoying the economic pie like from 1968, the year like everyone else . Before i was born. I think again, if you have a so i didnt bear witness to place to live that you feel is good and safe and affordable, if them. But now, a lot has changed and a lot has not changed. You feel like your neighborhood yeah, and Martin Luther luthr is looking out for you and the community the political leaders in your community jr. Would be 91, 92. Support you and hear you, its way harder to think about going he could be still alive. As much out in the streets. Okay, all right. And right now, clearly the fact so many are out in the streets, we get the message. Now, he could think not enough has changed. And i think we like to freeze youre a kmoo comedian, and you Martin Luther king jr. And remember, he was assassinated dont offend. And if you have to ask, sit for what he believed. He was thought celebrated to the down. But i disagree with that, if you same extent. Have to ask, you know how things bernese king, his niece, talks about that on twitter a lot. Different limpbt. You joked about having to you know, so reverend amos explain the impact of racism to white people. Brown talked to me earlier so explain why everybody else today. And he urged everyone to vote in should care what is happen november. Manage black america . Is that . Pass kor Michael Mcbribe in or is there more to berkeley california says white people have to university that racism that affects black people we have just over s150 days and brown people and people of until voting. You can do something every day brown color ultimately affects and then you can vote on them too. Election day. Dont wait until november. Because a society that is not got you. All right, kamau bell, thank you just and equity for everybody so much for joining us today. Means you are not getting the most out of the members of your really enjoyed the conversation. You did make me laugh a little. Society, and its not as good as i mean, its a little is a you want it to be. Lot now if you grade it on a if your society is not educating curve. All the kis and all the kids there you go, take care. Dont have a chance to engage in see you later. The future and make the future a thank you. Were going to take a break better day. So for me, the white folks have on the ca to stop saying, i have to go help the black streets. They should go out in the streets selfishly. This is truly the rising tide that lifts all boats. What do you hope is the take away, not just for white america, but also, you know, whether youre latino, asian, you know, here in the bay area i tend to think, maybe im polly anna, but think we dont think that way. But i dont look at people so much through race in my life, and people will call that naive. Individual and who they are. But is that also not the best approach if we want to solve the problems . I have a thick skin. So you can tell me im wrong. Good, youre wrong. No, im being flippant a little bit. But i believe you judge people by the color of their skin or their gender or their preferred pronoun. I believe you with that. But i believe we have to go, no matter if that is true or not, covid19 is still hitting black folks in east oakland harder than its itting white folks in san francisco. You know what im saying . Absolutely. The numbers support that. Absolutely. The similar isnt working for everyone and as a person of privilee, with you and privileg to use the responsibility especially in a historical moment. We will go, these are the people only the right side of history and these are people clearly on the wrong side of history. They dont right about the people in the middle of history. You are in one group or another. Its up to those of us with privilege to use our voice to heighten the voice of the people who are not heard. A riot is the language of the unheard because enough people are not listening to the unheard. If we listen to them, and took their concerns seriously, there would not be an opportunity for a riot. For get the need. The opportunity. We would only have riots when sports teams won. We dont like seeing that up. Thank you so much. See you later. Thank you. Either. No, but that is a different type of riot. And were back, thanks so if the warriors win another much for joining us today. Championship that riot does gets answers today with kamau cant spread around the world. Bell. Were here every day at 3 00 on youre right. Lets carry it over to take a air and short break on the air. On live streams, i want to talk about a question e people are tonight, breaking news as we posting now about looting and come on the air. Active duty army troops are now preparing to come to washington, d. C. , tonight. Military style vehicles have already been seen on pennsylvania avenue, near the white house. It comes after a weekend of pain and anger, in some cases spiraling into violence across this country. The president moved to the white house bunker at one point. The president today on the phone blasting the nations governors during a conference call. Accusing some of them of being weak, and demanding they, quote, dominate the protesters. The president calling on governors to Deploy National Guard troops in large numbers to impose order. The secretary of defense describing American Cities as a battlespace. Some governors pushing back, telling the president directly that his rhetoric is not helping. As the National Guard now takes all right, we are back on air with executive producer and host of cnns united shades of america, w kamau bell. Folks are asking about looting in particular. This is done by not just blacks, i mean, everyone. You see people from the sky 7 shots, all races. They aint rioting to be heard. They want freebies, all of that, and how is that an opportunity for justice. What do you think about that . I think i have answered this question over and over again. I feel like i answered it in the last block but people dont want to hear the answer. There are different segments of people out there protesting. The initial protesters go throughout with peace. And you have to remember that the polices who show up show up in gear that looks like theyre ready for war, which becomes agitating on its own. Some property destruction, some people start to break things and the people that you see in walnut creek, they like, oh, people are rioting. Me go to macys. We like to paint black people with a broad brush and we like to paint protestors with a broad brush. You resnd t ot out there foron opeyou be out in the streets and riots and looters dont show up on a wednesday. They show up when they have a cover of a protest. Youre right. Its something for each and every one of us this think about. Including journalists. People have different agendas. You cant look at one snapshot and assume that everyone is the same. I would say that too in berkeley, when there are black lives mat procedure tests a few years ago after st. Louis, white people stood in front of the white people trying to break into the trader joes and the other stores. Like that is not the what waer here there. This is the bay area, and again, maybe this is the polly anna part of me coming out bus i feel like most of us want to work for justice for all people. Im asian, your is white. We want the same things in the end, right . The ability to take care of our families and lead a good life. I want to ask you, you know, we have to go there, she has to be a part of the conversation. She walked in a second ago. She can say hello. The last time we had you on the abc 7 news, you talked about ans dent that you and your wife encountered in a berkeley cafe. It wasnt what george floyd encountered but a microaggression rooted in the same kind of racism that you experienced. Tell us that story again. Yeah, it was my birthday. I think of 2014. 2015. I will always remember it was my birthday. We went to the elmwood cafe, called baker and commons. The same place. We want there for breakfast. I left, my wife left. My wife returned back for she was sitting outside there friends. And i started to talk to my wife and her friends and one of the ploys said get to out of here, scram. And it was like, stap bothering the white ladies. And i stood there for a second, and she knows how to recognize my face, thats racism. And another employee came out and started giving me the bums rush, like, leave these white women alone. This is my husband. That is our child. We ate there earlier today. And said, we thought he was selling something. As if that was going make everything okay. The reason we turned it into a bigger incident, is that we realize, that if its happening to me, its happening to other people who dont have the platform i have. The nation was still reeling from ferguson and the michael the brown murder. It shouldnt be about death and how black people are killed. s levels of microaggressions and bias that black people deal with every day. And they have too many other things to do. Luckily for me, that is my job. That is an example where you feel you were immediately labelled a threat. Yeah, they looked at me as you know, i was a black guy in a hoodie and a beanie, at the time, i said that is how Mark Zuckerberg dressed all the time. I have to say, that is threatening. Yeah that is 40 of the adult men in the adult area. Its a nice hoodie. Because it was oaklandish. Yeah, and what was the Lesson Learned there . You had a little baby there. She was there with her mommy friends. What are you teaching your daughters . Just last night, we have an 8yearold, an almost 2yearold and a 5 1 2yearold. My 9yearold came in my office to ask me about her social studies home work, and i had cnn on, and it was showing the minneapolis burning down, and she asked, what was that . And i explained to her what happened. A man named george floyd was killed by police and people upset about it and police are not always your friend. Shes 9 and we had that conversation before. And as soon as that ended, okay, lets do your social studies home work and it was about the chinese exclusion act. We have all the conversations. You know, were having them at the same time. Is so shes learning about angel island and the chinese exclusion act and shes seeing racism on television. And my 5yearold asked, after seeing cnn footage, what is going on . We sat her down and had to break it down to low level, what if white kids at your school were allowed to go to the playground and have ice cream and black kids were not allowed to go and have ice cream. Obviously, that is a 5yearold level but its a way to talk about inequity. That is interesting. I talk to educators who say, maybe dont bring it up to children. But what you skrjust said, it ms total i feel that is negatiligence and the white people are going up there, and your kids are going to meet your kids and i want your kids to be sensitive. They might even get married and if your doesnt understand racism, they want me for a fatherinlaw. We are going
