The heat and holiday sent many people off to beaches and parks across the bay area despite recommendations to stay at home. Leeann melendez spoke to people who said they just needed to get out. I am really tired of hearing about covid19. Does this make them a bad person . Absolutely not. It makes them human. Today, humans had the heat, the holiday, and the will. Here at stern grove in San Francisco, peop gathered as early as 6 30. By late this morning, it was clear people were gathering elsewhere like at ocean beach. This is before noon, and already the beach was getting somewhat crowded. The painted circles were still there, and so were volunteers with the San FranciscoPolice Department. Handing out masks and reminding people to keep their distance. Be safe. Reporter we picked a much calmer mothers meadow in Golden Gate Park to talk to people about what get them out of their homes. Just trying to find some little sense of normalcy, even in a very different way with a sixfoot pole and distance and mask. Reporter this couple came up from woodside, where it was much hotter. We thought this would be a nice place to be, and theyre pretty much social distancing here, so it seems like a safe place to be. Reporter people here remember other memorial day holidays before covid19. When they were only reminded to never leave pets inside a parked car, and to drink plenty of water on a hot day. Now, add social distancing and cover your face. I think it gives everybody an indication of whats really important and what things they can enjoy and appreciate. Reporter nancy and wallace have found it hard to be away from family. They say people are social beings, and that is really true. Its hard not being social. Particularly with family. Reporter like many of us, people are just trying to make the best of their world, which has been turned upside down. Gosh, i wish i could still do that. Over the weekend, the supervisor, which covers that area for that district said that he saw the pictures over the weekend and said it looked pretty serious, the situation. Today, of course, the volunteers were out there, volunteers with the San FranciscoPolice Department. They remind people, send gentle reminders, saying, you know, be careful, mind your distance. They were trying to hand out masks. We did see some San FranciscoPolice Department officers, some regular police officers, they were not handing out any citations while we were there. The heat really rising in the east bay, where people are trying to get out while still abiding by the rules designed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Reporter for the most part, beachgoers respected the rules. We have a lot of families out here and for the most part people are abiding by the social distancing guidelines. Reporter with so many people, police decided against strict enforcement of one rule, the one that requires people to keep moving, not sitting or sunbathing. At walnut creek, this guy chose to work on his fly fishing technique. We started early, we had like 25, Something Like that. Because its going to get hot. Its already starting to be hot. Reporter no matter how People Choose to spend the holiday, people said this is one theyll never forget. I think well definitely remember, and also remember some of the things that were grateful for too, that were not able to enjoy currently. But we look forward to enjoying in the future. I should mention that this heat is going to be with us for a few more days and even hotter tomorrow as a result, a heat advisory is in effect from now until 7 00 p. M. Thursday for virtually all of the bay area. And an excessive heat warning for solano county. So not a bad idea to spend a lot of time out in this heat. But some changes are starting to happen, at least at the state level. California took a big step toward reopening instore Retail Shopping. The guidelines include physical distancing and face coverings and will apply to both malls and department stores. Each store will have to provide a written plan and train employees and investigate cases of covid19. Reopening is subject to approval by county Public Health departments. It does not include personal services such as hair and nail salons and barbershops. The governor posted the announcement on twitter writi writing california also released guidelines for reopening churches. Under the recommendations, houses of worship can resume inperson services, limited to 100 people. Or 25 of the buildings capacity, which ever is smaller. Also, worshippers should wear masks, avoid sharing prayer books and skip the collection plate. The guidelines ask faith leaders to discontinue singing since it could spread the virus. This afternoon at city hall, a group of Bay Area Black ministers called for churches to stay closed. Were still preaching and teaching, still trying to help our community. We will continue to do that until it is safe. Church people, it is not safe yet hundreds of other california churches have vowed to defy the current stay at home order for may 31st, which is pent cost, a major holiday for many christians. A fire erupted this afternoon at a land fill right off of i880. It started just before 1 00 p. M. At the Republic Services island landfill on lickson landidixon. The smoke could be seen for miles. Large piles of trash containing mostly Paper Products went up in flames. Firefighters from fremont and san jose came in to assist and it was contain ed a about an hor ago. No reports of injuries. That fire at pier 45 on saturday still under investigation. Extensive damage inside the warehouse is threatening to disrupt the crab season. Dozens of crash fishermen lost millions in gear in that fire. Cornell bernard spoke to fishermen today about how they plan to recover. You wake up and realize that everything you did your whole life is gone. Reporter bob has been a crab fishermen for 46 years in San Francisco, but now hes not sure what to do. I lost every piece of equipment, Fishing Equipment that i own, not just crab gear, in the fire. Reporter his expensive crab traps, mostly hand made, were stacked to the ceiling inside the warehouse, along with hundreds of others. Heres what it looks like now. A total loss.
