"gma" has everything you need to know from grilling the perfect burger to cashing in on holiday discounts. and up ahead, how doctors are treating children who have an inflammatory syndrome linked to covid-19. what to know in our "gma" cover story. all that ahead. but first our trevor ault has the latest on the pandemic this morning. trevor, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning, you know, this is anything but a typical memorial day weekend, but still millions of americans are going to be out and about. and state officials know that. they are expecting crowds everywhere. they're just hoping people can manage to stay apart as they get together. this memorial day weekend, americans eager to get outside are being given extensive opportunities to do so. anticipating a crush of people, states rolling back restrictions on beaches, golf courses, mountain trails and more. >> i'm so happy. i love it. i just am so happy i'm out of the house. >> reporter: in indiana officials urging people to go to the state's larger beaches where they'd have the best chance to spread out. while right now in florida, all youth sports and camps have the go-ahead to return. >> this is a parent's decision. no parent is required to have their kid. if you don't feel comfortable doing it, then don't do it. >> reporter: the cdc has updated its covid-19 guidelines saying the virus mainly spreads directly from person-to-person and doesn't spread easily from contaminated surfaces. the agency also now estimates at least a third of people who contract covid-19 don't show any symptoms. still, major areas are eswi adaof ening caution. new york city is closing 41 miles of streets to give people more space, and while walking on beaches there is allowed, swimming, sports and cooking are banned. in california, most beaches are open with restrictions like no sun bathing. >> there's also another reality that is stubborn, and that is the virulence of this disease remains, and lives are continuing to be lost. >> reporter: now here in belmar, new jersey, the boardwalk is lined with signs telling people to social distance, and the same is true on the highways leading to beaches and parks. health officials continue to insist no matter where you go this weekend, it is imperative you keep up the social distancing so we can prevent a second spike. guys? >> no, you can eat it. you already touched it. you have to eat it. you can't put it back. don't put it back. >> i'm not putting it back in the pile. >> i'll eat it. >> i didn't want to say good-bye then start eating the cookie. anyway, we love you, maggie. >> we love you, maggie. >> you have to eat it, whit. now to our "gma" cover story. the latenst co dr. todd ellerin, an abc news medical contributor and infectious disease physician. thanks so much for being with us. let's start with this study published friday in "the lancet." it looked at patients and then treated them with hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine. talk to us about what the study found. >> sure. good morning, eva. so basically large study published by "the lancet," 96,000 patients with covid-19 either received hydroxychloroquine alone or that along with the zit what they showed there was a significant increase in death in both groups. in the hydroxychloroquine group, 34% increase in death. in that when you added in zithromyacin, a 45% increase in death. okay, and even a higher risk of cardiac arrhythmias so we weren't sure before whether this didn't have benefit but now this combination or individual medication may be harmful in patients with covid-19. now, two points. one is patients that are already on this like hydroxychloroquine for other reasons, we really have to prevent them from getting this illness and then there are randomized controlled trials going on with hydroxychloroquine. so the data safety monitoring boards really have to look closely to make sure there's no increase in harm. >> still a lot we have to learn there. we've seen kids get really sick with covid and this multisystem inflammatory syndrome, but there seems to be some success with the way doctors are treating it. what's the latest there? >> yeah, the cdc just published some encouraging data looking at 33 kids with this mysterious syndrome giving all of them ivig, which is basically antibodies from healthy donors and there was zero mortality. no deaths in the study. now, 30% of them got an additional dose of this ivig and 70% got steroids. so it looks like when we're quieting the immune system, these kids are doing really well. >> that's some positive news to hear this morning. and some dentist offices are re-opening across the country. what changes will we be seeing to keep dentists, hygienists and patients safe? >> so, eva, we don't need another reason to not go to the dentist, but we want to be able to do this safely, so i think a few things are important. number one, we have to keep those waiting rooms not populated with patients. so wait in your car first. it would be nice to be screened to make sure you don't have a flu-like illness. once you're in the room, you want to make sure the patients are wearing masks. of course, the dentists and their team should be wearing masks and shields, and then the question is, remember, with dentists and their equipment, they use aerosol generating equipment like these scalers, these ultrasonic scalers that can give a pressurized mist. you really want to try to avoid those if possible, and maybe use the old-fashioned picks to get the tartar off. >> yeah, some changes happening everywhere we go these days. dr. todd ellerin, thank you so much for being with us this morning. now, let's switch gears and send it out to rob in the backyard with a check of the weather. >> a lot of people in the backyards today, the front wards and paying tribute to those who have fallen in honor of our country. today it's not so great across the northeast, but things will be improving. so we got three days to work with here across the country so you'll get a good day in one of those. today let's talk about it. rough surf, that low that created the havoc across the eastern third of the country the past week. rough surf. if you're going to the beaches, really the safest thing is going to be south of delmarva. above that temperatures, 40s, 50s. as a matter of fact, there's the threat for hypothermia if you go swimming off the coast of new hampshire. so let's keep it to the carolinas, and if you're going anywhere else, maybe wear a wet suit. the weather will be nicer across the southeast so good beach weather there and nice beach weather as well across parts of the west coast. of course, make sure your beaches are open. what the rules are as you head out that way. that's a check on what's happen good saturday morning from . looks like we'll get our sea breeze back this afternoon. so it will be comfortable to cool at the shoreline. otherwise, we're warming up today. the heat intensifies for the holiday on monday and looking at triple digit heat for several days. maybe four days next week. mid-70s today at oakland. look for 78 in fremont. 84 in livermore. >> reporter: like many americans during this extended time at home, i've put it to use by staining the deck, cleaning the grill. we're going to do a cooking segment outside with michael symon. it's raining a little bit here, so i've taken this opportunity to finally go inside. michael will be outside by his grill and we'll cook up some amazing burgers here in just a few minutes, guys. i am looking forward to that. >> i love it. >> we haven't seen rob inside since the basement days, remember? >> yeah. >> a little weird with the cat. >> yeah. got a little dark in the asement. erwas a howling cat. something about kitty litter. >> sweaters. >> yes, he wore a horrible sweater. >> the cat used the bathroom. >> hopefully none of those things will happen when you're cooking burgers. rob, see you back here in just a minute. we'll switch gears and talk about something a lot of us are dealing with. so many of us are more isolated than ever. getting them to use video chat technology seems like a great idea, but it's not always an easy to accomplish feat and becky worley has some solutions. take a look. >> reporter: we met great grandmother ruthie newman last fall. she's an artistic, social, 80-year-old senior who loves painting lessons and visits from her son keith. >> hello. >> reporter: but nursing homes so worried about the spread of the coronavirus have stopped all visits, and ruthie, who isn't very techie, hasn't been able to set up video chatting. >> every day is precious. i don't want to miss out on every opportunity to be there for my mom. >> reporter: this dilemma of how to connect with older relatives online is playing out across the world. we want to video conference with my mother-in-law in england. so, what's the easiest option? >> you're going to want to find something that is very straightforward, very easy and you want to meet them on their level. >> reporter: she says if they have a smartphone, the easiest thing is to use facetime if it's an iphone or google duo for android phones. another easy option if they have facebook installed -- >> there is an app that's called facebook messenger lite. it just kind of eliminates the fluffy extra effects and gets down to business by making it easy. >> reporter: if they have a webcam on their laptop or desktop, both zoom and skype have meet now options where you email a link and user doesn't need an account or pre-installed software to join. >> hi, granny. >> reporter: that's what we did with my mother-in-law. she had no problems whatsoever. >> that's crazy. >> reporter: for ruthie her son keith and i got creative. there are many devices. some targeted just at seniors but we bought an amazon echo show, which does video ch through the video chat through alexa on the phone or through another echo device with a screen. the key is setting up account and wi-fi info in advance then sending it to the nursing home. keith delivered it and started a video chat with ruthie. >> hi, mother. how nice to see you today in person rather than on a phone call. >> reporter: they talked about the future. >> so you are asking about plans for christmas. >> that would be nice. >> reporter: just seeing her giving him peace of mind. for "good morning america," becky worley, abc news, sunnyvale, california. >> our big thanks to becky worley for that. now over to whit. >> all right, dan, thank you. now to memorial day discounts. the holiday weekend brings big savings, but will you get more bang for your buck if you buy now or if you wait until later? "people now's" jeremy parsons is breaking down the buzziest entertainment to binge. jeremy, you get the airhorn welcome as always. >> i'm ready. i'm watching michael and what he does with his towel and all these sort of things that the pros do. michael, that setup you've got out there looks amazing. >> you got to swing a towel. >> thank you for braving the elements. is this what's going to happen memorial day? is that your spot? >> this is my spot. you can't be afraid. rain or shine, born and raised in cleveland, i would shovel through four feet of snow to get to the grill. so a little sprinkle is not going to bother me today. who is mentioning earlier talking about, boy, that doesn't look like a healthy memorial day snack? who eats healthy memorial day snacks? >> reporter: right. totally. i lov that'me and.p burgers. >> you cn out, it doesn't matter. you could cook on either side so basically what you're doing is taking about five ounces of ground beef and seasoned it with salt and pepper and put it into a measuring cup to kind of form it and then pack a piece of cheese in. i'm using cheddar. just push it right into your burger and then seal it up like that. are you following me so far? >> the cheddar is already in there? >> yeah. you put some cheddar in the middle. then you top it with a little bit more cheddar. >> okay, all right. >> and then you take your chopped bacon, and you top it again. >> raw bacon no less. raw bacon. >> raw bacon because we'll cook it on the grill, and then when you pop it out, you have this beautiful concoction like that. this is all seasoned. it goes bacon side down on the grill. i acavli right here and two that i flipped, and then we're going to make a little sauce. so favorite barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, mustard, you whisk these together. >> mine is going on. >> this could then become a little glaze you put on the back side of your burger and then you could also put it on the bun. so it comes off. >> so that's mustard, barbecue sauce and mayonnaise. >> barbecue, mayonnaise. >> the fire department may come. i got to put the fan on. >> you brush the burger with it. so then when you flip, you get some extra caramelization. so i know -- come here real quick. when you flip this, look, see that, you get that beautiful caramelization and sear and then the mayo gives you another kind of sear. so that's what you're looking for. we're going to take this guy off. i put it right -- >> i did one of these for practice, and it sizzled and crusted like nothing else i've ever seen. how long should you cook it for? >> smash it, and then the cheese s right into the middle and through the burger, so when you cut it in half, you're going to get this kind of -- oh, yeah, see the cheese is in there. >> oh! >> pickles, raw onion, bacon crust. uh-huh. oh, yeah. >> i'm a little worried mine is not done. i'm a little worried -- do you have faith in me? >> i have complete faith in you. i can't see your burger, but as long as you use good ground beef, you could eat it anywhere from rare to well done. as long as your ground beef is good, if you trust where you got the beef from, then the temperature is your choice. but if not, you know, just let it sit for a little bit longer and that's okay. i'm going to enjoy mine for breakfast, and my puppy norman is ready to have one too. >> you deserve it, my friend. i bet. my crew is ready to have a couple of burgers. this is incredible. i love that you can do it both on the grill or in the frying pan. did you lose a lot of bacon when you put it on the grill? how does the bacon stay on if you're trying to sear it like that? >> when i go out from the grill and do things like this, i just place my pan right on the grill whether it's a cast iron, cast enamel, stainless steel, whatever kind of pan you have, you can work it right onto the grill. then when you close the lid, you still get all that beautiful charcoal, wood, smoke that kind of envelopes the burger, which gives you just one more dimension of flavor. so you could do this on a gas grill, you can do it on a charcoal grill, you can do it on a wood grill or your oven. i'm a charcoal guy myself but to each their own whether you're inside or outside enjoying friends and family this weekend, what else more could you ask?
