Thats 23 universities, including san jose state, cal state east bay, sonoma state and San Francisco state university. So joining me to talk about these changes is the president of sf state, lynn mahoney. Plynn, thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. Pleasure to be here. Absolutely. Csu is a Large University system. Actually the largest in the country. Right . The way you guys go, a lot of other universities are follow. A lot of universities are Still Deciding if they want to do hybrid or they want to just hold off a little longer to see if theres a glimmer of hope. Your system has pulled the trigger. Tell me about the timing and why announce this now . It is important that people have time to plan. Its two the first are our students. Th theyre planning for housing in the fall. In the San Francisco bay area, people cant find housing at the last minute. It behooves us to give them. And also provides the faculty time to prepare online experiences for the students, we did it fast this spring to meet the Public Health needs. We need to plan thoughtful, educational and intellectual experiences. If most classes are virtual this fall. Taking a look at how theyre going now, mistakes made, lessons learned, what do you think has gone well, what hasnt, will it be much of the same or more of the same this fall . I think whats gone well is a lot of innovation and a lot of people doing things to he keep everyone safe and well. Wonderful innovations like a dance professor teaching dance in our living rooms, there was a professor of firstyear seminar who invited them to bring moms to class. Weve learned this students need greater access to technology, wifi. Thats those are the kinds of things were going to improve. Were going to provide faculty access to professional Development Office where they can learn to do remote teaching more effectively or what technologies are the best to yoochlt i think the spring has gone better than most of us imagined. The summer to become much more consistent about it. So going remotely, does that mean youll be able to offer more classes or fewer classes you think in sections . You know, actually, in some ways, it gives us more flexibility to offer more. We dont have the temporal or physical boundaries that we had on campus. It certainly allows us to create educational experience thars are more fluid for students needs. One of the things ive heard repeatedly this spring, some students have had to pick up extra hours at the grocery store, amazon, wherever theyre employed to help their families. This can help accommodate the schedules. Its certainly, all of us would prefer face to face, we love being on campus together. But the opportunities at Virtual Learning does do you think this means you can enroll more students . Sometimes its hard to get a popular professors class. Will that problem not exist as much since its virtual and you can allow 300 people in . Certainly. Well accommodate as many students as enrolled. One professor can only teach so much. We can have greater flexibility with the amount of courses that we offer. Could this mean reduced fees for students . I mean, some students feel its online learning, i simply dont want to pay as much. Would you consider a reduction in fees . Tuition for the California State University system is done centrally by the board of trustees, not individually. Were awaiting their conversation that theyll have later this summer. But i think its worth noting to the California State University system that the tuition students pay only cover half of their experience. It doesnt cover the whole experience. What about room and board . Obviously, youre not offering that in the fall as kids are not staying in the dorms. What does that mean for you budgetwise . I know its a big hit. We refunded over 12 million this spring alone to students for housing and dining. Youre absolutely right. Were taking a close look at the Housing Program and its an enormous financial hit for us. Of course, Governor Newsom is supposed to give out his budget revise tomorrow. Were expecting huge cuts to education. I dont see how csu could be spared. Can you confidently tell student that is their education will be just as good even with whatever cuts come their way and your way . Well, we will prioritize the student learning. So yes, i can tell them that our faculty will be among the best in the world and that their educational experience will be sound. There will be other things they lose. Support services and some other things. But our First Priority is to their learning. Support service, mental health, things like that or what about tutoring . Academic advising. Well do everything we can to cut anything that doesnt touch a student first. Just as we did back in the recession. But if the cuts go deep enough, theres a consequence. But, again, were going to prioritize their learning and their success. Rbts you worried if you lose some of those services a lot of students may fall through the cracks and not make it to graduate . Absolutely. Which is why were going to do our absolute best to prioritize their success and whats needed for their success. But if the cuts go deep, then well have to have serious conversations. Lrpt. Obviously, a lot has changed for this years seniors or i should even say juniors in high school. Are you changing your requirements for admissions or are you changing anything for incoming students to make it easier for them to still meet the requirements and get accepted and enrolled . Yes. The entire California State University amended requirements for graduating seniors to be kind about their grades this spring and along with the university of california, weve eliminated the standardized test scores for the following fall. I think youll see continued innovation to ensure that students continue to be eligible to come to the csu. All right. Lynn mahoney, San Francisco states president. Thank you so much for spending a few minutes with us to talk about how you are going to move forward given all the changes and next school year will look a lot different. We appreciate your prior or priorities so the students get the best education they can. Were going to take a short break on air. Welcome back. Dr. Patel, im going to give you an overview and tell you what you need to know. Doctors are calling this illness, pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome. Its a leading cause of Heart Disease in children. Kids have a disease that they have swell offing of hands and feet and redness in eyes and. Toxic shock syndrome, low blood pressure, high heart rate, can cause one from a bacterial infection. This condition pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome, is in its own category. But it has features of other two diseases. Now, there are now about 100 documented cases across the United States with the majority in new york, including a few recent deaths. Most of the hospitalized kids either tested positive for coronavirus or ran a positive antibody test. Doctors are unsure why kids are affected like this. Some suspect its a post infectious immune response. Still, by and kids are doing well against covid19. But we cant assume that every case is going to be a mild one. Were learning more and more as the days go on. Parents, dont panic. This sounds scary because it is. But remember, its rare. Just be on the lookout. If your kids seem really sick or if they have symptoms like really high fever, abdominal pain, a racing heart rate or changes in skin color, call your doctor or get them seen by a medical professional. Good advice from dr. Alok patel. Were going to take a short break on air. The conversation continues on our live streams including Facebook Live and abc 7 news hi there. Welcome back. San Francisco Mayor london breed says 95 of San Franciscos Retail Businesses will be able to reopen for Curbside Pickup and delivery come monday, may 18th. Shopping malls will remain closed. We have confirmed that San Mateo County will be on board with this plan. Weve reached out to the other four counties, alameda, contra costa, marin and santa clara to see if theyre part of this. We havent heard back yet. But in the past, these six counties have moved in unison. Joining me to discuss what this means from a business and Health Perspective are our special correspondent, dr. Alok patel and two San Mateo County Business Owners, jim bernardini, owner of leftys sports and john owner of nuts for candy, both located in burlingame. Thanks for joining me, gentlemen. Thank you. Jim and john, youve been closed for two months. Are you so eager to open . Are you ready to reopen monday . We are so excited that the county of san mateo will be allowing us to open on monday. We were open last wednesday. We received a call i called 211 San Mateo County hotline, they gave us permission to open because we have essential products, puzzles and educational products. And i guess i was misunderstanding. I received a text message from a burlingame councilwoman saying im knot abiding by the law that i have to close. So there was a conflict. A lot of people were confused with the governors mandate and the county of san mateo. We closed on monday, a couple of days ago. Were excited to open this coming monday. Thats great. The confusion you just spoke of, i think others have experienced that. So you do have to meet certain conditions and Health Safety plans in order to reopen. If you can talk about how youre going to observe social distancing and protect the health of both your customers and employees. What do you think, jim in sn whats your plan there at leftys . Weve been watching a lot of whats going on, on the news. Over the country and what locations are trying to do. I want my customers to feel 100 safe even if theyre at my front door. We have plexiglas covering there. We have the correct cleaning supplies. When product comes into the store, we sanitize it first and if anybody does make a purchase, well sanitize it right then and there before they take it before we hand it over to them. Same thing with the use of their credit card and so on. Rubber gloves, masks, the whole nine yards. I want to feel as comfortable walking into my front door as i would going into somebody elses store or johns store. I want to feel that i would assume he would do Everything Possible for my safety just like i would for his. Dr. Patel, what do you think . That sounds like a sound plan. What are the points of transmission, if you will, in a Shopping Experience . Well, i think jim and john are doing the right thing in kind of addressing how theyre going to be able to keep not only their staff, making customers feel comfortable. There are so many points of transmission. Not only with customers with each other, customers to employees and employees with one another and the products going back and forth. Make sure we not only have gentlemen, if we could just talk one at a time that would be great. I think our mics pick up all of you at the same time. Can you guys not hear me . I think our zoom guests actually cannot hear you. Thats okay. Ill be the translator. Jhn, i want to know, you sell ive been looking for them on amazon, hard to find them. Im glad ill be able to get them from your store curbside. How will people shop for things like that if they cant look. Lets say i want a disneyuzeor . How does that work . What were doing with the puzzle inventory, were taking pictures of every single puzzle we have and posting it on our nuts for candy Facebook Page and people make a comment in the comments section if theyre interested and we will reserve it. And then they pick it up. When they come in, they pay by credit card. We have puzzles coming this week. Were getting ready for monday. Hundreds and hundreds of puzzles that are arriving this week for us. What about candy and nuts, especially the ones in bulk. Are you not doing bulk right now . What were doing is, we wear gloves and we wear our masks and we bag the products ourselves. If a customer comes in and says, i want one pound of chocolate nonpennsylvania real estate, we nonpa real estate. We bag it ourselves. You have sports merchandising, youve got hoodies and shorts. I dont know if you can turn that around. How will people try on clothes. They cannot. How will people shop for clothes or hats . I think theyll shop for clothes the same way they would on amazon. Theyll ask for sizes. If we have the sizes that they want, well ship them out to them or bring it out to them. Obviously, we cant have anybody in the store to try on clothing or anything. But for the most part, our product is pretty much trading cards. Thats most of what it is now. We can put a couple white boards out in front of the store and say heres the new product we have that came in this week or today. Customers can make orders based on what they see there. We have a large online presence. We do a lot of Facebook Live where we sell singles. Were going to email all our customers every couple of days. I dont want to over do with emails. If they are interestd in something, they can reserve it, they can come get it or ship it out in a second for them. I want to bring in viewer questions that theyre posting for jim and john on facebook. Sampson wants to know, what about ow dandle toys . Toys are easy to handle. So we have the inventory. If a customer doesnt know what they want. We ask for the age group theyre looking for. We have a table, we display the products. There are about six to eight feet away. Then they can tell us which one they want when they come to the store. Its a Curbside Pickup. No one is allowed in the store. So we will do like a catalog showroom where they can point at the product or let us know what theyre looking for. Craig wants to know, these expenses for operating under these conditions and requirements, how will you deal with these expenses and thats similar to marks question, too, which is do you expect enough people will be out shopping to offset the expenses of reopening and basically do you gentlemen think it will be worth it . Jim . Well, thats the Million Dollar question. You know, i think people want to get out of the house. People are also worried as well. They can continue to buy online from us and trust that thats a safe way for them to get what they want. Its just going to be an interesting thing to see what happens. We do get people knocking on the door. Im here all day doing ebay and shipping and things like that. We get people knocking on the door and we keep telling them, send us an email and well deal with you that way. I cant let customers in the store. Thats been working so far. I hope that the numbers come back the way they were. Its going to be difficult. It will be. Theres not going to be cost passed on to the customer and my collectors because what were having to do for safety is really not that expensive. I dont think anything has to be passed over to them. Right. Look, it sounds like youre both trying to minimize the risk. I want to bring in dr. Patel. No matter how careful you are, when you start to reopen, there is a degree of risk. Its all about mitigation. But fthere is a greater degree f risk. What are the Public Health officers looking at to say hey, the bay area, we can move into phase 2 this come monday . Tell me about the numbers. Kristen, those numbers are based, theyre county specific. Is there a downward trajectory of cases over the last two weeks, are there no deaths over the last two weeks, is there sufficient protection for essential workers, hospital capacity, Testing Capacity all these metrics. The bay area is in a good place for a certain county to start looking into this. One other question i wanted to ask the Business Owners. Theres talk of a lot of businesses doing some form of a customer registry. Just in the event they need to do Contact Tracing. Im curious if either Business Owner with these two shops are thinking about doing that to keep the potential name and phone number on file for a certain amount of time if they have to refer back if there was an exposure. Adequate Contact Tracing is an important of reopening businesses and schools. Thats a great point and question which ill pose to jim and john. Dr. Patel pointed out Contact Tracing is a critical part of ensuring that we can open up safely. Are you considering a customer registry perhaps so that you know who your customers are should there be an outbreak or somebody who gets sick you can contact that person or find out who theyve associated with or dealt with or maybe even take note of who, which employee handled the packing of this particular item, who handled this sale so that there is that data and information should you need it for Contact Tracing. Guys. With my wife and i being the only employees at the business, so its easy for us to handle. Also with our customers charging on credit card, its easy to trace who the customers are. Were very careful and the only contact we have is the credit card. Jim, have you thought about that point. Were pretty much the same with john. Theres only a few of us that are here in the store. Well know who helps what collector. And, again, everything is either on paypal or credit card. So were not going to be handling cash at the moment. We should be able to figure out pretty much whom our customers and collectors are at the time they come in. Im not too sure about asking everybody their information for keeping it for records like that. You might get a little backlash for t i think we keep it the other way, well be fine. I was going to say, right now, are you gentlemen taking returns . I assume you cannot, right . No returns. We are not accepting any returns on any products right now. Jim . We havent had that come up yet. But most of our product, once its open, it cannot be returned anyway. We have a fairly extensive policy on returns. Obviously, someone, before if they had the wrong size jacket, come and exchange it for another one. We might have to change that when something leaves the store. We make sure they know that before they walk out of the store with the product. All right. Jim bernardini of leftys sports and john ka brannian, owner of nuts for candy, thank you both very much and dr. Patel, thank you. We appreciate it. Thank you very much. Conversatio welcome back. Thanks so much for joining us today on this interactive show. Getting answers. A quick recap. The big story today, of course, San Francisco mayor london breed saying 95 of the citys Retail Businesses will be able to reopen for Curbside Pickup and delivery on monday. Shopping malls will remain closed. Weve confirmed that San Mateo County will also be on board with this plan moving into phase 2. Weve reached out to the other four counties in the bay area to see if theyre part of this. Well let you know when they confirm. Usually they move in unison. Well be back on air at 3 00 tomorr tonight, President Trump late today taking on dr. Anthony fauci, who urged the country to be cautious when reopening the country. Adding that fauci wants to play all sides of the equation. This all comes tonight as the cdc now prepares to issue a National Alert to doctors about that dangerous condition affecting children.
