Im liz kreutz. Lets get a quick look at the weather. Here is meteorologist lisa argen. Good morning, lisa. Good morning. Were looking at low clouds and fog here. Santa cruz with a high of mid to upper 60s today. Onshore flow bringing the numbers down all over the bay area, well into the 90s on the peninsula, mid and upper 70s in San Francisco. So, overall, 15 to 20 degrees cooler in parts of our inland valleys and we started that cooldown yesterday along the coast. Theres a look at san jose, 54 in napa, as well as concord, and with the visibility, the fog, it has been reduced threequarters of a mile, santa rosa, peta two miles at the shoreline. Looking at the numbers in the 60s at 9 00 around the bay. Will feel cooler 80s inland but only upper 50s at our beaches. Liz . Sounds good, thank you, lisa. Well be closely watching for crowds in the bay area, especially out at dolores park in San Francisco. Mothers day Holiday Weekend means more people could want to get out of the house. Yesterday police started patroling after the it became too crowded. Reports say that few people listened to them. Mayor london breed said if things dont improve, she would consider closing the park. Similar concerns for weekend crowds at oaklands lake merritt, but in what could be a good sign of things to come, sky 7 was overhead yesterday. While there were people out enjoying the sunshine, it wasnt all that crowded. Hopefully, people are listening to the mayors message to give the lake a break. There was a huge crowd a couple of weekends ago that caught the citys attention. She is joining San Francisco mayor breed to say she will close lake merritt if social distancing doesnt improve. We really need to give the lake a break, yall. We are really concerned about the traffic there at the lake. We dont want to move into an enforcement situation. We really want people to be socially compliant. So far, police have not issued any citations to people at the lake. Happening today, officials in San Francisco also will be on the lookout for crowds at beaches. Sky 7 was overhead ocean beach and baker beach yesterday where a lot of people took time to cool off. It appears they are following social distancing guidelines but officials remind residents that parking lots and beaches in the city do remain closed. Different guidelines for different counties when it comes to reopening. First weekend for stage two of governors reopening plan. Curbside pickup for lowrisk businesses. But most bay area counties are not allowing that just yet and thats leaving shops confused over which rules to follow. The owner of mendels in sfan was disappointed that her shop, which sells fabric and crafts was closed. Windows repaired anticipating they would be reopening soon. There was confusion. My employees, my customers were all kind of confused about it, but i knew it was local jurisdiction was going to take precedent. When theres a difference between local and state guidelines, you have to follow the more restrictive measures. Local businesses will be trusted to follow along, rather than being enforced by police. San francisco leaders say they hope to move to stage two on may 18th. In the north bay, three counties are moving forward with stage two reopening, napa, solano were allowing curbside deliveries for lowrisk businesses, but the move come toos late for one Small Business owner. Her business survived fires and outages but not this pandemic. Last day. Reporter the last pie has been sold at the whole pie in santa rosa, where owner trish davis is saying goodbye at a dance to loyal customers. We faced every disaster that one could come up with, short of locusts. Reporter last thanksgiving we were there when a planned pg e shutdown nearly put davis out of business. Hundreds of pies needed baking. Years before that, wildfire evacuations closed her shop indefinitely. Now the deadly pandemic has delivered the final blow. We need to take a moment and regroup. And in that regrouping we came to waving the white flag. Reporter this bake shop was considered an essential business. Davis tried doing takeout for a while but she says it didnt feel right. It wasnt worth it to sell people pies which are really essential, lets be honest, and sacrifice the potential health of ourselves, our staff, their family members. Reporter other retailers across Sonoma County reopened for curbside pickup, from vape shops to Jewelry Stores to the village art supply where kristen kiriakis was delivering paint supplies to a customers car. Its not business as usual. Its going to take a while to get ramped back up to where we were. Reporter shes laid off 13 employees, but hopes to bring them back to work soon. Back at the pie shop, trish davis and her crew are hanging the closed shop for the last time and locking the door. Were sad to let it go. We hope others can survive this. Reporter in santa rosa, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. Happening today, park amenities reopen in san jose with some guidelines. Tennis courts, bocce ball, pickle ball, disk golf, skate parks and horseshoes. Equipment must not be shared or you will face fines of at least 100. Just north of the bay area, mendocino is planning to enter stage two of the governors reopening plan. It issued new guidelines, allowing all Retail Businesses to reopen with curbside pick ups. Stage two only allows for lowrisk businesses. The county is okaying groups of 12 children or less to play at athletic fields as long as the group stays the same for each outing. Happening today, two Norwegian Cruise Line ships will be arriving at the port of oakland to dock for at least two months. The ships will have only skeleton crews on board. No reports of coronavirus associated with the ships. Port officials tell us nearly 100 cruise ships worldwide are seeking safe harbor as most cruises have stopped during the covid19 pandemic. There are about 80,000 crew members on passenger ships, waiting to get to a berth. They wont get off the ships in oakland but at least theyll be tied up next to dry land. Of course, the last cruise shim that left the port, the grand princess, had a widespread and deadly coronavirus outbreak among passengers and crew. Cdc and Health Officials in other countries put out guidelines for cruises to disembark but theyve been deadly so cruises have been asked to remain on board. Protection from covid19 at san quentin, outside the prison this morning. Organizers are calling for the release of inmates over 60 and with health conditions. The most Vulnerable People are in overcrowded conditions without protections and unable to be physically distanced from each other. Major cause and effect is happening, with looking for ways to build a better bay area. Bringing in new customers while allowing for social distancing when current restrictions ease. They say theyll be going al fresco. Amanda del castillo takes a look at what that means. Reporter san jose al fresco could be the answer to getting the bay area back on track postpandemic, allowing restaurants, gyms and row tailers to do business outdoors, using parking lots, sidewalks, streets and other areas if allowed. Its somewhat unchartered territory but i think we all have to begin putting a creative approach together in the postpandemic world. Reporter an effort to get ahead of any rule that might limit how many people can be indoors at a time. San jose Downtown Association executive director scott meese says of the more than 1,600 businesses in the downtown core, only 6 are open and essential. 9 are partially open for togo or delivery service, and 80 are closed because of covid19. West of downtown, porthouse bistro is open and on board with the citys proposal, already considering how business might change and anticipating any challenges. We have a parking lot in the back that would also give us an opportunity to see more people, just depending on the restrictions that the governor puts out. Eporter for san jose businesses, the move outdoors will take some time. The city will begin discussing the ordinance wednesday. We want to ensure theres a Clear Pathway for businesses. We know they dont have a lot of money to be spending on fees. They dont have time to be spending with lobbyists, consultants. They just want to know what are the rules and how can they do it. Reporter the most obvious barriers are the need for Health Orders that will allow this outdoor activity, orders at both the state and county level. Im amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. Lots of creativity right now. Lisa, it was so nice yesterday, in my opinion. I love that warm weather. You say its going to cool down a little bit. Oh, yeah. Well not see any 90s today, liz. It was in the 90s inland. Mt. Diablo, you see the haze, looking at ridge of High Pressure still in control, but sliding to the east. What does that mean . Onshore flow and cooler temps today. Details, coming up next. Thank you, lisa. Also next flames burning really, really high. Its pretty crazy to hear the explosion and get bigger. Where we saw this crazy scene sparked by a car crash into a condominium. Plus, abc 7 news iteam report, bay area man is in the middle of a multimillion dollar controversy of ventilators. And we follow along to see new this morning, san jose firefighters are clean iing up after a car crashed into a condominium and then caught fire. A witness tells abc 7 news a driver ran a stop sign and slammed into a condo, causing a gas line to explode. The flames jumped from one condo to another. Looking at the fire. Looking at the smoke, it looks leak it was going down and all of a sudden just a big boom is what you heard, and more flames coming up again. Some more trees caught on fire. Theres the creek right next door. We were kind of scared it might jump over to the apartments across the street. Its unclear if anyone was hurt. We have calls into the fire and Police Department for information about the driver. I guess the most striking thing was the chaos at the time within all levels of government, at the state and federal level. How did that chaos lead to a Silicon Valley engineer scoring an 86 Million Contract for ventilators when he had no experience in the medical field . It was a deal that seemed too good to be true and now its gone terribly wrong. Abc 7 news iteam reporter dan noyes has the story. Reporter tonights headline in the New York Times, he had never sold a ventilator. New york gave him an 86 million deal. The he is oren pines of san jose. His linkedin shows a background as an engineer for firms such as google. Dao tran works with him at a Networking Company they cofounded and confirms oren pines has no experience in the medical field. Did he ever have any experience with ventilators, did you ever talk about Something Like this . No. We didnt. We havent talked about that. I need 30,000 ventilators. Reporter the month of march was tense and chaotic. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo scrambled to find ventilators for the coming surge of coronavirus patients. How can we be in a situation where you can have new yorkers possibly dying because they cant get a ventilator . Reporter three days later, President Trump tweeted General Motors must start making ventilators now, ford get going on ventilators fast. Oren pines tweeted we can supply icu ventilators, invasive and noninvasive. Have someone call me urgent. Within days state of new york had wired oren pines 69 million out of an 89 Million Contract. New york officials jumped on it and said that federal officials had been vetted. Reporter sharing tonights by line in the times, a team of volunteers chosen by Jared Kushner vetted oren pines and officials went to new york to close the deal even after oren pines made unusual demands. Anyone wishing to do business with him had to sign a contract within four hours of getting a quote, that the payment had to be paid up front and that was nonnegotiable. Reporter but no ventilators materialized and wells fargo froze oren pines account. New york canceled the order and demanded its money back. Theyre arguing over the last 10 million from the state that oren pines still has. He has not returned my calls to his cell or his home. But quoting an email that was sent to the New York Times last weekend, what has happened to me personally over the last few days is worse than death itself. I have done nothing wrong. All i wanted was to help new york state and the process got thrown under a bus. I reached out to three members of congress, Jackie Spiers and Eric Swalwell but they declined to comment. Dan and the iteam have done a lot of great work during this pandemic. You can read all those stories on our website abc7news. Com iteam. If you have a question or concern, thats where you can also contact them. We are wrapping up National Nurses week. Cs candy has donated literally hundreds of thousands of boxes of candy all across the west. An organization that usually supports families of Fallen Police officers and firefighters helped coordinate this donation. Why do you want the 100 club to help in this effort . Thats what we do.
