Why is it three or four times more so for the black community as opposed to other people . It doesnt make sense and i dont like it. Its very sad. Its nothing we can do about it right now except to try and give them the best possible care to avoid those complications. Thats President Trump and dr. Anthony fauci discussing the disproportionate number of deaths in africanamerican communities. Health officials expect it to continue as more states report their data. Officials are working with black communities to improve messaging on the risks of the virus. Before the nation can address the Racial Disparity in covid19 cases and deaths, we first have to answer the question at the center of it all, why . The reasons are often as diverse as the communities themselves. Heres abcs steve osunsami. Reporter there are few places in america that are keeping close track of how covid19 is impacting communities of color, and there are some familiar explanations for whats happening. Higher rates of diabetes, high Blood Pressure, and other conditions that make it more difficult for someone to fight off the new disease. But theres also the concern that more black and brown americans are people like detroit bus driver jason hargrove, an essential worker who posted this video seen by millions on facebook complaining about a sick passenger who he felt should never have walked out of her home. I feel violated. I feel violated for the folks that was on the bus when this happened. Reporter he was a married father of six, and he died of covid19 just 11 days later. I cant blame nobody else. I got a job to do. Im trying to be professional out here. I got a job to do. Reporter theres Something Else thats happening in the middle of whats becoming a nationwide economic pause. Were seeing reports of black and Latino Service providers who are taking calculated risks to keep working because the social distancing isnt paying their bills. Among American Families of color theres also a skepticism of Public Health authorities that dates back to the experiments that began in the 1930s in tuskegee, alabama, where black men who thought they were being treated for syphilis werent. There are new concerns about black men about wearing face masks in public, worried that even more people will assume that theyre criminals. This doctor at ar urgent care in new york city says when people of color do get sick, the medical facilities in black and brown neighborhoods are often unable to provide the type of care these patients need. So we know that in black and brown communities, that typically these hospitals that are called minorityserving hospitals there have been studies that have shown this, tend to offer poorer quality care. We also know they may not have the resources to deal with very sick covid19 patients. Reporter adding insult to injury, its harder for these families to weather the economic storm of covid19. Experts underline that black and latino workers are overrepresented in the restaurant and hotel industries, for example, which are nearly entirely shut down. What to do about this . Turns out some of the suggestions help everyone. Putting a hold on evictions, for example. In atlanta the mayor but out this notice announcing available rent reductions at all public housing. Shes prepared to keep those reductions going into june. Health Officials Say addressing the problem requires first seeing it. And there are calls for the federal government to start counting the impacts to people of color. Then theres the socioeconomic effects here. In chicago most bus drivers are black. And most Food Service Workers are latino. Those populations are struggling hard. Steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. Our thanks to steve. And i know steve, and that piece was well thought out. But he even knows that youre only touching the tip of this. Because it is an iceberg of issues that involve the black community when it comes to the health care system. And it takes a lot of yes, we got to talk about it, but it also needs some action. Definitely, yeah. I spoke with dr. Patel about this exact topic. I asked him, its no secret there are socioeconomic inequalities in this country so why are we surprised by these numbers or why werent we able o numbs . He said thns time in First Communities across the country. And so now youll be able to look at that and be able to pinpoint different disparities and compare different communities and how it affected them. Again, we can talk about it, but action definitely is needed. Coming up, keeping your home safe from the coronavirus after youve been out. Weve asked one virus researcher the best way to reenter your home without bringing the virus back in with you. He reenter your home without this is the world we live in oh and these are the hands were given oh theres so much confusion these days about what we need to do to avoid getting the coronavirus. And one of the biggest questions is how do you safely reenter your home after youve been out all day . Abcs becky worley checked in with an expert. Reporter coming from the outside world back home feels significantly more treacherous these days. So we asked dr. Angela rasmussen, a researcher from Columbia University who studies viruses, how sheis after a trip, say, to the grocery store. So heres what i do when i get in the car. Reporter it actually starts here when she leaves the store. Take my hand sanitizer. Sanitize away. Reporter when she gets home, her immediate routine has a focus. Before touching my face or touching any other surfaces in the house, im going to wash my hands for 20 seconds with soap and warm water. Reporter she says coats, purses, and fabrics dont need special treatment. There has not been any reports of coats or clothing being a significant transmission risk for covid. Reporter she does think about her phone. Phones are potentially a higher risk source of fomite transmission or transmission from surfaces because they are in such close proximity to both your hands and your mouth and nose. Reporter she recommends cleaning phones with disinfectant wipes or alcohol when you get home. What about changing clothes or washing your hair . The risk for transmission from your clothing, again, unless youve had direct contact with somebody who might be sick, is pretty low. Thanks to our becky worley. Im going to add, take your shoes off before you enter. And also, no outside clothes in the house. Dont put your bag on the bed. Please dont. Coming up, quarastreaming. Coming up, qrarastreaming. Sal garcia took pictures of signs children made for him and others, including medical workers and garbage collectors. Turning now to the growing concern among minority communities about the Racial Disparities in covid19 cases. Black americans have been making up the majority of deaths in places like louisiana and michigan when they dont even make up half of either states i spoke earlier with dr. Patel about this new data. What were seeing right now is when we first were making these Public Health recommendations about covid19, saying things like call your doctor if you have symptoms, or social distance six feet away, people werent necessarily taking every community into account. Some of the communities you mentioned, there is a disparity between the amount of africanamericans who are dying first as a total population. Were seeing it, you mentioned in michigan and louisiana, also in milwaukee and chicago. Now, its kind of multifocal here. According to the cdc, africanamericans have a higher prevalence of diseases like hypertension, diabetes, even having a stroke. That could potentially contribute to your risk of getting serious complications from covid19. These are also communities people may not be able to socially isolate. They may not have health insurance. They may not be able to get medical care until its too late. By understanding whats happening in these communities, well be better prepared to give them the help they need, or possibly maybe they need more intervention in this early stage. I think what were going to see is how the social determinants of help play out right now. Its an extremely important topic for anything related to Public Health. I want to ask you about this alarming article from the new york post. Its about new york city doctors claiming ventilators are being turned up too high in hospitals and its actually hurting the patients lungs. Is this something that you are seeing or hearing about . Some of these patients, theyre coming in and their oxygen levels, oxygen saturation, are really low. So its like they need the oxygen more so than the pressure. And thats something that a lot of my colleagues say they havent seen before. So again, were learning more and more day by day. Its really up to those frontline Health Care Workers to kind of feed back the data and tell us what to expect to keep patients safe. I want to ask you about certain cleaning products. In recent years natural and organic cleaning products have become increasingly popular. Can they actually kill covid19 or should we be using harsher products like clorox wipes and bleach, stuff that isnt so popular . People want to do the right thing and they want to make sure theyre using responsible, allnatural cleaning products, and i respect that. I respect mother nature. But right now the priority really needs to be in using products that can kill the virus. And theres a couple of products out there that will say, kills household germs, or can clean your home, protect you from getting sick. But they dont actually make the claim they can kill this virus. One example is there is an allnatural cleaning product i was looking into last week. You might see fancy ingredients and they sound promising. But if you actually look up the certified ingredients on the cdc or Environmental Protection agency, these ingredients arent all as qualified to kill the virus. I actually personally reached out to one of these companies and i brought this issue up. And i said, hey, these ingredients arent listed as ingredients known to kill sarscov2, can you elaborate . One of the Companies Said to me, this is a cleaner, its not a disinfectant. The takehome point for americans is, we really want to make sure were using products that actually have ingredients that can kill the sarscov2 virus. If youre unsure, check out the cdcs website or the epa where you can look out the ingredients. When in doubt, make your own with alcohol or diluted bleach, recipes are online. A lot of great information from dr. Patel. I asked him what products should we be buying . I need name brands. He said, look at the ingredients and you should be good. My whole house smells like pine sol so i was looking for him to name drop that. The mix is next. My whole house smells like pine sol so i was looking for him to name drop that. The mix is next. Earlier this week and throughout this whole process of the pandemic weve been talking about flattening the curve, we want to get to flattening the curve. We knew that getting there was also going to be tough because it was going to lead to so many people dying. That is what we begin with, the latest developments this hour in the coronavirus battle. A record 731 people have died of covid19 in new york state in 24 hours. The death toll in new york city alone now reaching 4,000. More than the number of people who died on 9 11. It was also the deadliest day for neighboring new jersey and the country as a whole. As doctors and nurses continue to scramble for lifesaving supplies and equipment, President Trump has announced that more than 100,000 ventilators will soon be on the way, and he acknowledged that the outbreak is hitting africanamericans the hardest, plagued by underlying conditions and other factors. Meanwhile, british Prime Minister Boris Johnson remains in intensive care as he battles the virus. Hes receiving oxygen but is breathing on his own. Abcs Megan Tevrizian is in new york with more. Reporter as the coronavirus death toll approaches 13,000 people nationwide, africanamericans are being hit especially hard. In chicago they comprise 30 of the population but account for 72 of deaths. Its not that theyre getting infected more often. Reporter but dr. Anthony fauci warning americans not to stigmatize any group, emphasizing that preexisting conditions are causing the worst outcomes for minorities. There are underlying medical conditions. The diabetes, the hypertension, the obesity, the asthma. Those are the kind of things that wind them up in the icu and ultimately give them a higher death rate. Reporter in new york, the state suffering its worst 24 hours yet, more than 700 deaths in a single day. Thats 731 people who we lost.
