Reporter but with 22 years of service to his country, he is no stranger to crisis. This reminds me of my time spent in new orleans, 2005, responding to Hurricane Katrina. This is different, because its nationwide and something were not used to, but were ready for this. Reporter 1,000 miles away in new orleans, dr. Jim akin knows all too well the damage Hurricane Katrina wrought. All across the country, its places like these that are struggling to stave off the virus attack. Louisiana, texas, florida, new york, georgia and michigan. Tonight we take you inside some of these emerging hotspots and their fight to slow the outbreak. Amazing. Two days ago, this was floor. After the 9th of april, we should have 1,000 beds in here, with staff working it. Reporter cases in michigan have been steadily climbing, dus doubling every three days, the number is 10,000 infected with 400 deaths. We can build patient rooms into that. Reporter as the city braces for a surge of new covid19 cases, Lieutenant Colonel turner and his team also anticipating theyll build additional sites. We are looking across the state, doing assessments, mostly in the southeast michigan area, mccomb, oakland counties but to the west. Reporter not just hospital beds worry dr. Nick gilpin, but staffing. We certainly have the ability to do field hospitals in our community, but whos going to staff them . I barely have enough physicians taking care of the patient lendy of my staff to another alternative care site for care. Reporter at beaumont health, he and his team have been monitoring the spread and preparing for the worst. We were watching the response in china but i dont know that any level of preparedness would be enough for this. Detroit is getting skrushed rig right now. We are running out of ventilators, and i feel like were playing Musical Chairs with the ventilators we have now. I was talking with the bereavement office. Theyre flooded, trying to make sure they have enough body bags. The whole city of detroit is an underserved area. A lot of these patients are going to continue to require care, and we just dont have that infrastructure in place now. Reporter in louisiana, cases have soared to nearly 10,000, a 42 jump overnight, with more than 30 of those patients hospitalized. Trying to make sure everybodys signing this. The majority of patients we are caring for now are all covid19 patients who require ice laying a isolation and are extremely health. Reporter just outside of new orleans, she encountering a storm of patients. We are seeing patients decompensate extremely quickly and placed on ventilators. Reporter already the west Bank Location has no open icu beds, but there was some good news. My colleague, marcus moore spoke to doctors there. They said theyd gotten the fiveminute test, the only Hospital System in the state, they hope these new tests will ease some of the burden of front line teams. I never thought as an oddologist id be on the icu floor, its scary. Reporter dr. Jim akins special is wide scale catastrophe. In katrina, you knew backup would show up eventually, it may have gotten there lately, but it got there. With covid19 there may not be backup for you. No. In fact, with katrina, we had plans, and we felt if we could just work this plan that we would get through this, and for this pandemic, though, at the end of the day, you think i can only hope that weve done enough. Reporter its a rare sort of bravery he and his team possess. Cautious optimism, even in the face of a pandemic like this. Its a nightmare in progress. You have the combination of a rapidlyspreading pathogen, virus, and a highly virulent virus. Reporter about an hour away in baton rouge, the Regional Medical center has also begun seeing a growing wave of covid19 patients. Im pretty anxious to see how today is. Reporter nurse morgan began recording video diaries earlier this week. Not 100 sure how things can get worse from here. Reporter by this morning. I didnt sleep too well. Reporter growing realization of the very real peril of her work on the front lines. I think i just started reflecting back on my shift from yesterday. Several of us started to kind of smell an odor, which is natural, not speaking ill about the patient, and we kind of looked at each other like do you smell that, because if youre n95, when you get fitted, they do a smell test, and you shouldnt be able to smell things. It made me realize what a big sacrifice myself and my coworkers are making. Reporter in new york, the ep center of americas crisis, the numbers are staggering. The death toll more than 1500. More than 650 people dying in 24 hours. The javits Convention Center now accepting covid19 patients to handle the overflow. All the rooms are filled. Reporter in this video provided by mt. Its been a week since he last saw his son. Last night he asked me, he said when from you going to come get me . And i toad hld him when everybo stops getting sick and going to heaven. Reporter but it isnt just big cities and suburbs. Outside of atlanta theres another simmering hot spot in georgia where the governor just issued a statewide shelter in place order. Youre not safe in Rural America. It isnt just for big cities but for all of the United States. Reporter the Phoebe Putnam system has reported at least 750 cases and at least 35 deaths. Currently, rice is a nurse here. Yesterday i had to face time a Family Member so they can say goodbye to their mom, their aunt, their grandma. And its so hard, you start thinking about your family, if this was you and all that. Reporter for terrica parks, this was her reality. She was diagnosed in march and came close to deaths door. Whoever thought that talkin, something as simple as talkin would be this difficult . Reporter she went to the er twice. Doctors telling her that her organs were on the vefrge verge of shutdown. I started looking at old pictures. I didnt feel anymore fight in me. Reporter but she pushed through, making it home to a twoweek isolation. So this is where i have been since march 14. Im gettin ready to hug my kids ah reporter from Rural America to our urban centers, this spread of covid19 is growing. Men and women putting their lives and for some their experiences with disasters past to use with this real and current danger. Your courage reminds me of the words of booker t. Washington, 1895. Plant your bucket where you stand. So you decided to plant your bucket in new orleans. It will always be in new orleans. And it will always be with my colleagues, my residents and the wonderful hospital i work in. Up next, oneonone with michigan governor gretchen whitmer, fighting for federal support and fighting back criticism by the president. And later, a good book and a good night with dolly. I can do it, so can you, woo, woo, woo, i believe in you. Surfaces . Ing t then they get released back into the air so you smell them later. Ew. Right . Thats why febreze created small spaces. Press firmly and watch it get to work. Unlike the leading cone, small spaces continuously eliminates odors in the air and on surfaces so they dont come back for 45 days. At the drivethru, on the mobile app, and with delivery. Despite the cries for unity, states, desperate for resources, are forced to bid against each other for valuable ventilators and ppe, and governors, both republican and democrats, forced to juggle this new pandemic, and old and poisonous politics. One of those governors is michigans gretchen whitmer. She and the president have bickered publicly in her bid for more resources for her state, which is now planning for the worst of this outbreak. Earlier tonight, i spoke to her about the Crisis Brewing in michigan, and how she plans to cut through the politics to get the help needed. Reporter michigan is the tenth largest state in the country where youre number four in the number of covid19 cases. What does that mean to you . What does that say . I think it says that we all have to take this very seriously. You know, covid19 does not discriminate based on state border or party affiliation. And thats precisely why ive been consistentry saying we need to have a national strategy. I am concerned about our allotment from the National Stockpile not meeting our needs. Reporter today as im sure ayoure aware, the president tweeted that massive amounts of medical supplies are being delivered. Some have insatiable appetites and are never satisfied. Politics . We are not one anothers enemy. We have got a battle on our hands. This virus has no cure. It has no vaccine. It doesnt discriminate. And frankly, every one of us needs to be spending all our energy to combat covid19. Reporter what have been some of the stories youve heard and your citizens that have moved you most in these days . There are terrible stories. A friend of mine in the michigan legislature, 44 years old, died of suspected covid19. Wasnt tested but had all of the hallmarks of it. I think this is something thats going to touch every one of our lives. Thats precisely why no one should have time for anything other than trying to fight covid19 and save lives. The people that are still working in our grocery stores, keeping the food on the shelves. Janitorial service that comes in and keeps places clean and sanitized, and teachers making sure that our kids are getting food, school is out but half of the child population relies on free lunch at school. So there are super heroes among us. Reporter i know michigan needs many things, but could you give us a priority list, what you need most of, whats second, whats third, whats fourth . I would say its tied for first, n95 masks and test kits. We need to do robust testing and we need n95 masks for doctors and nurses and people on the front line in our hospitals. Every ounce of energy i have is trying to procure more test kits. We do not have enough test kits. Every decision were making is based on the best science and information at hand. Reporter interpretefrom the white house and their briefings were hearing that supplies are going out the door and getting to states. But from doctors and governors like yourself were hearing a discrepancy, how do you explain that between what youre saying and people on the front line are saying . I have talked personally with Vice President peps on a numbncr of occasions, and i believe he understands how dire the situation is. Weve talked about it. I know my fellow governors have had similar conversations and have found him to be a sympathetic ear and lending a helpful hand. Im not sure what is said at press conferences. But i do think think appreciate the seriousness of the situation. Weve gotten some help and we need more. Reporter point blank, its clear you and President Trump are having issues. Hes made it clear on a number of occasions hes not impressed by you. Dont call the woman in michigan it doesnt matter what happens. Michigan all that happens is, she has no idea whats going on, and all she says is its the federal governments fault and weve taken such great care of michigan. Reporter how hard does that make your job as a major state that the president of the United States has taken the opportunity to criticize you. I dont take anything personally. My job is to deliver to the state of michigan. We have too many people who are sick, too many who are dying. Im doing my job. I ive never taken potshots at other politicians. Im not going to start now. All i can say is this. We are in a dire situation. We need assistance. We need it from the federal government. Every state in the nation is going to confront this at one point or another. Weve got to get this right for every american. Reporter governor, we wish you and your citizens godspeed. Thank you. Next, saying good night with dolly. This book is so special its celebrating its 90th anniversary. There will be parads and sporting events and concerts.
