Reporter as the disease spreads, nurses and doctors in hard hit areas say they dont have enough supplies to take care of their patients. They say they need more now. And the police provided the backdrop for a coronavirus message in london. And by police, we mean the musical group. Some hospital midwives used the song dont stand so close to me to spread the word about social distancing. Dont stand so close to me. Dont stand, dont stand, dont stand so, dont stand so close to me ive been using mc hammers cant touch this but they all held signs with the words stay safe and stay at home along with the disinfectant and hand sanitizing wipes. I love all the songs that people have been using to talk about social distancing during the pandemic. Music helps. It really does. Helps spread the message. Get back from the beatles. Leave me alone from michael jackson. How about im a survivor. I will survive. Thats another one too. You got them all. I have a playlist if you need it. But cant touch this thats the best. Is america doing enough to cushion the Economic Impact of the coronavirus . But first, dr. Jennifer ashton, what she says we need to focus on now. And later, how many of us are taking to social media to make quarantined life just a little more livable. Youre watching world news now. Youre watching world news now. Police in brussels use drones to remind visitors in a large park to keep distance from each other. Belgiums emergency order requires people to stay about five feet apart. Back here at home, some medical experts are admitting that the intense focus over the past two weeks on testing for the coronavirus may have been misplaced. Abcs dr. Jennifer ashton and tom bossert joined Martha Raddatz on this week. You heard Health Experts in the press conference yesterday saying not everyone should be tested for the virus, prioritizing those who are already hospitalized. So are we in a new phase of this disease . Does it even matter that people are not anymore tested . I think we absolutely are in a new phase, martha. If you go back just a few weeks ago, there was such a big push and focus on getting more tests out there. And i think now its almost looking like that was an unfortunate dirsio b yes, data does drive decisions. Its important to know the penetrants of this virus. But right now focus on testing everyone is drawing our attention and valuable resources a way from Critical Care not just patients with covid19, but with the patients who are already in our Health Care System at baseline, the heart attacks, the stroke, the accidents. So i think we are going to switch very rapidly, and we heard dr. Fauci mention it yesterday, to this message. If you have mild symptoms, do not try to get a test. And tom bossert, is where we are today with the number of cases, number of deaths where you expected us to be . Better . Worse . Many experts show we are tracking with italy, and thats obviously not good. So martha, one of the problems with this is to treat the United States as a monolithic thing. Were a really big country, as you know. So much bigger than italy. What dr. Jen said is right in terms of testing. We needed more case ascertainment in the beginning, because the plan going into this was to target these clampdowns into places that needed to be clamped down. Because we didnt have that testing capacity, and because it came on us quickly, we ended up shutting down the entire country, economically, but through social distancing, all at once. Now where we look like we are today is that seems to have worked if people stick to this plan. Im upset for those that dont stick to it, because were all paying a very heavy cost here economically. And if you dont follow these rules, then youre slapping us all in the face because we dont get the Public Benefits of that cost. I would say there is a dichotomy to answer your question between the 47 states that seem to have a problem, but one they can continue to control, and the three states led by new york unfortunately that seem to have a problem that is going to grow now in way, and i say this and hope im wrong, that is going to overwhelm the new york Health Care System in the coming days. Wow. Thanks, martha, tom and dr. Jen there. Its a little scary when you think about overwhelming the system, obviously. But also overwhelming peoples minds when it comes to fatigue over this and making sure they do what they need to do. And obviously one community in nebraska wants to do Something Different than what the community here in new york feels they should do. Essentially there is no one overall fix. There needs to be focus in certain areas, particularly new york, california, and washington state. Youre right. Coming up, bracing for the Economic Impact of america, the world as well in this lockdown. What one financial expert says the government needs to do to help hourly employees thrown out of work. Youre watching world news now. Surfaces that trap odors and release them back into the room. So try febreze fabric refresher. Febreze finds odors trapped in fabrics and cleans them away as it dries. Use febreze every time you tidy up, to keep your whole house smelling fresh air clean. Fabric refresher even works for clothes you want to wear another day. Make febreze part of your clean routine for full home freshness. La la la la la world new we are back with a desolate times square. A desolate times square, a rare sight to see. One of the most devastating impacts the coronavirus has had is on the economy. And in particular, hourly workers, who have now lost their jobs and are now forced to social distance at home with no paycheck. Earlier i spoke with cpa daniel geltrude. The negotiations are under way on capitol hill regarding this proposal to inject 1. 8 trillion into businesses and households. But as we see democrats and republicans going back and forth over the details, are these checks that are ranging from 600 to 1200 for the working middle class even enough to keep people on their feet . Its really not enough. And a lot more needs to be done. We have to look at what the core issue is. And the core issue is people are losing their jobs. So we really the problem here is to preserve the jobs, not necessarily send people checks. So i dont really think that this is going to solve the problem. It may help if they can get it passed, but they really need to redirect help towards the Small Business owners and the employers. And this crisis has pushed the stock market into turmoil. We saw stock futures hit limit down as soon as they opened. Can you tell us what this means for americans 401 k plans . Well, there is no question that its going to be a rough ride ahead. I think were going to see the market literally be all over the place. This stock market is very, very headline sensitive. And im not sure whether were going to be getting a lot of positive headlines, at least in the near future. So i think as far as people having their 401 k s, theyre going to have to relax a little bit and ride out the storm, because we are really in uncharted territory here. Definitely. And we heard President Trump say a recession is likely. Now given the abrupt halt of businesses and personal activity, and at this rate, do you see the situation possibly even turning into a depression down the road . Or can you see the economy turning around . I dont think there is any doubt that we are really going to have some trouble ahead. With the amount of people that are going to be potentially unemployed here, its i dont know if we want to say recession, depression. I would just say were in for extraordinarily challenging times. And im not so sure that we really bounce back from this so quickly. It really depends on what type of programs the government can put in place to try to keep this economic downturn as limited as possible. And is there a possibility to recover some of the loss of the Economic Activity . I think its going to take a long time to recover from this, if we are going to be down for a 10 or 12week period where people cant leave their house, i think its going to be a really, really long road if were in that situation. And lastly, can you touch on some of the realities that wage workers, for example, are facing, given the uncertainty of this situation . Hourly employees particularly are going to have a difficult time getting through this, because generally speaking, those are the people that are the first to go. So now no work, no pay. How do they survive . It really goes back to the point i made before. We need to figure out how to have these businesses not close. And my concept of that, especially if the federal government wants to support this, is to have Business Interruption insurance that is generally not covered by a virus, have the federal government guarantee that interruption insurance. That will keep businesses running. That will keep employees getting paid. I think thats our best route here. Kenneth, on that note he points out Industries Like the airline industry, they will bounce back because the government wont let them fail. But for restaurants, its going to be a lot harder. Theyre going to be devastated because they dont have a lot of excess capital. We just think about the american worker. The average one is going to have a tough time. Time. Its a different world than where you come from, yes it is now here is my chance to make it and if we focus on our goal go ahead, miss aretha. Its a very difficult world from just a week ago. That is for certain. But the struggle is only proving how resilient americans can be. Will ganss is here with more. Good morning, will. Hey, good morning, guys. It is absolutely critical that americans continue to follow the federal governments guidelines, so important about social distancing, nonessential travel, and hand washing. Defeating this unseen enemy requires the help and commitment of every single american. Reporter crowded beaches in california, boat parties in florida, and this video showing a crowded new york city park. I dont know what im saying that people dont get. Im normally accused of being overly blunt and direct. And i take that. It is true. I dont know what they are not understanding. This is not life as usual. Reporter Governor Andrew Cuomo he predicting 40 to 80 of the states population could become infected warning this virus is not a joke, giving mayor de blasio 24 hours to enforce the stay at home order in his city. It is insensitive, it is arrogant, it is selfdestructive, it is disrespectful to other people. And it has to stop and it has to stop now. Reporter de blasio saying that he is looking at taking stricter measures. When we say you can go out for some exercise, were not saying that you can linger, not saying that you can make a day of it. Reporter officials across the country stressing to their communities to heed the warnings. My view is we die trying. I think the flattening of the curve, the social distancing, telling everybody just stay home gives us a real shot to keep the numbers down. Reporter and a reminder to americas youth. Time to grow up. Reporter the president declaring the states where the outbreak is most severe here in the u. S. Disaster areas, new york, washington and soon california. But some governors even the republicans say that they are struggling to get the equipment they need. It is not nearly enough. It is not fast enough. We are way behind the curve. Reporter new york citys mayor and Police Commissioner say they are cracking down on large gatherings in city parks. And the nypd will drive around telling groups of people not to linger in city parks, officers will go into Grocery Stores and other public spaces encouraging social distancing. The mayor emphasizing this could all change, they will try this for a week and then reassess the procedures. Stephanie ramos, abc news, new york. And senators are returning to the negotiating table this morning on the new trillion dollar economic package. Mitch mcconnell accused the democrats of playing with the emotions of the American People. If we arent able to act tomorrow, it will be because of our colleagues on the other side continuing to dicker when the country expects us to come together and address this problem. Mcconnell placed blame squarely on nancy pelosi. Democrats call it a slush fund for corporations. And hospitals in hard hit areas are feeling the strain with shortage of supplies. This morning growing concern inside americas hospitals. As doctors on the frontlines plead for help. It is a scary time to be a doctor. And mayor de blasio says some of the hospitals will run out of protective gear in the next 10 days and is asking President Trump for the militarys help. We have to get these supplies here rapidly. The Denver Broncos home was filled with personal protective equipment this weekend. Hundreds of people dropped off unused medical supplies as part of a statewide drive in colorado. Hand sanitizer, bleach, and other items will be distributed to hospitals and other medical professionals. Good to see that organization stepping up there. All right. Coming up, dr. Mike on the coronavirus. The internet celebrity doctor whose followers number in the millions checks in with us this morning about his immediate concerns and what he thinks so many of us are doing right. Thats next on world news now. World news now. And there has been so much new information about this Novel Coronavirus that has been coming at us from all different directions, but so much of that information is conflicting. Earlier, i spoke with dr. Mike who is using his enormous social media following in the fight against covid19. Dr. Mike, thank you for joining us. The big headline this morning the white house and federal officials telling labs across this country to prioritize inpatient testing. That means those who are the sickest or have this coronavirus potentially getting tested first before the masses. Your thoughts . I think thats a really good first step because those who are admitted into hospitals really deserve more acute care. Theyre usually the ones who are having worst symptoms and are potentially going to be admitted to the icu if their symptoms worsen. So i think putting them as a priority is not a bad idea. I think what we need to avoid as a society is rushing to get tested when were having very mild symptoms or are asymptomatic. A lot of times all that does is yield false reassurance, encouraging us to go outside and spend time with friends or family when thats the last thing we should be doing and instead socially distancing ourselves. Going into another week of dealing with this pandemic, whats your biggest concern . My biggest concern is the capacity of hospitals. I know the hospitals are nearing capacity very quickly. Now we are building excess hospitals, but unless we have the ventilators provided to us, doctors cant magically make patients better. Coming off another weekend of people being told to social distance, to take this pandemic seriously, how did the American People do . I think this weekend showed a lot of solidarity, at least here in new york city from what ive seen. The streets have been near empty. Im near times square. I dont see a single soul at 9 00 p. M. On a saturday night in times square. I think thats something to celebrate. I think the amount of people that stayed home has been really impressive. Thats not to say its been perfect. In a pandemic rarely do you get a perfect result. The Vice President says sunday the cdc will announce new guidance to allow those who have been exposed but asymtomatic to return to work sooner than the recommended 14 days. Is that still a risk . Research gets published to the cdc faster than it does into my hands. If theyre seeing some sort of reassuring signs that you can bring people to the workforce earlier rather than later, im happy to hear that. I hope theyre doing that safely. So dr. Mike, i want to read this headline from mens health. It says youtubes dr. Mike is using internet fame and hot doctorness to battle covid19. Youve got nearly 10 million followers on your social media platform. So how are you using all of this celebrity and medical knowledge to help people during this pandemic . Well, i think medical information for so long has been slightly corrupted in media. In order to get attention, when youre talking about health, its not necessarily an exciting subject. I really came into this and said no, were going to take the information and hold it to the highest evidencebased standard. However, were going to do it while having some fun, making it relatable. Watches some medical dramas and talking what medicine they get right, what medicine they get wrong. And now i think its the ultimate proving point that during such a crisis in our country, my videos are getting two million to five million views which is similar to some of the biggest shows on television. I think it shows if youre a trustworthy individual, you know what youre talking about, people will come. And i urge other medical professionals to get outside that bubble. Dont be afraid. Publish content, but do so responsibly. He makes some great points there. I am going to say what i got to say next, while you drink your water. Thirsty. Listen, he said that beautifully. No pun intended. Drink your water. Youre parched. People are desperate for information, mona. Its why were interviewing medical professionals, doctors every single morning here on world news now, on gma, on world news tonight, on nightline. People want to hear raw unfiltered information on this pandemic. Something he said that is very interesting is pat yourselves on the back. If you stayed home this weekend and you listened to the cdc guidelines, you listened to what Governor Cuomo and all the other governors were saying, then congratulations. Because you are helping bend the curve or flatten the curve. And even though you see those images of people still out and about, at least you can say that you listened. Yeah, definitely. Here to telu about the Colonial Penn program. If youre age 50 to 85, and looking to buy Life Insurance on a fixed budget, remember the three ps. What are the three ps .
