With the coronavirus here at home, right now it is officially a pandemic. We are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity and by the alarming levels of inax. We have made the assessment that covid 19 can be characterized as a pandemic. I can say we will see more cases and things will get worse than they are right now. How much worse well get will depend on our ability to do two things, to contain the influx of people who are infected coming from the outside and the ability to contain and mitigate within our own country. In order to curb spread of the virus, San Francisco is banning Public Events with more than a thousand people. That means the warriors will play tomorrow nights game at the chase center against the Brooklyn Nets without any fans inside the chase center. Unser hassan joins us live from the chase center. Reporter good evening. The recommendation to ban large gatherings of more than a thousand people was first voluntary. Its now mandatory. That includes events at the chase center like concerts and also all warriors home games. Its bigger than the warriors. Its a serious situation. Theres a lot of different opinions on what should be done, what could be done, but i think we would all agree and were also always taught its better to be safe than sorry. Reporter the Golden State Warriors making it official, no fans at their home games for at least the next two weeks. Its a sobering moment to enter into this kind of unknown. Reporter the city of San Francisco issued a state of emergency in light of the coronavirus. That includes banning all large gatherings of more than a thousand people. This morning mayor london breed and City Health Officials met with the warriors president , making that ban mandatory. I was in touch with the nba immediately after the meeting with the mayor. The nba agreed the best way forward for us was to play tomorrow nights game without fans. Reporter City Health Officials say the ban is an effort to curb the spread of covid 19. The warriors expect other nba cities to follow suit. We have to take those steps now. Obviously theyre extraordinary steps, but i think we are all of one mind that if we do not make that investment now, the impacts over time will be much greater. We engaged our players. Do you want music, do you want it before. Were not going to pretend like there arent any fans there. Reporter there may not be any fans but there will be a stats crew and the game will be aired on tv and radio. Were going to play the game. We may not be in a position where were competing for a playoff spot, but brooklyn is. Theres many teams that are. Theres a competitive component that you have to respect. San franciscos decision to ban all events of more than a thousand people forced drastic action today by theaters and large venues. The orpheum quickly cancelled all performances of hamilto through march 25th. They initially cancelled todays matinee but allowed the show to go on just ten minutes before the opening curtain. I actually won the hamilton lottery yesterday. No one wins the lottery. I know, im so excited. So if they cancel it, ill be really sad. The matinee performance of harry potter went on as planned. Future performances will actually go on as well after the theater announced that it would reduce its capacity to exactly 1,000 people. Other venues, including the bill graham Civic Auditorium and the warfield cancelled or postponed shows as well. The centers for Disease Control is urging Santa Clara County to ban all Community Gatherings of 250 people or more. That includes religious services. This recommendation is part of a 30day strategy to try to slow the virus. The county Just Announced three new cases of covid 19 in Santa Clara County for a total now of 48. One person in the county has died of coronavirus. The task force is also recommending that all businesses screen employees and visitors daily. The county currently bans gatherings of more than 1,000 people. Heres a rundown of the actions from bay area counties. San francisco, banning all gatherings of 1,000 people or more. Santa clara county is also banning events of 1,000 people, although the white house says that number should be 250. That may change, well keep you posted. Alameda recommends cancelling or postponing gatherings of a thousand or more there. Contra costa county is recommending adults 50 and older and those with Chronic Health problems to avoid large gatherings. Marin county recommends cancelling indoor gatherings of 100 or more. And San Mateo County recommends cancelling or postponing all nonessential gatherings. Unfortunately has impacted our economy. When we first heard of this virus back in january, we immediately launched our Emergency Operations center. What we noticed during that time and supervisor peskin can attest to this, we didnt get a lot of support and people who visited our community here in chinatown and other places. As we can see as this develops, this virus is not discriminating based on race. This virus is impacting people all over the world and has impacted a number of people right here in San Francisco. As of today, we are up to 14 cases. But im really proud of the work that has been done with the department of Public Health to really be proactive in making sure that we are prepared, in making sure that we keep people healthy and keep people safe, in looking at our vulnerable communities, our seniors and people who have illnesses and other respiratory challenges and providing resources and support for them, but also being aware that we have a vulnerable Homeless Population and making sure that we have places for people to be quarantined, people who live in sros right here in chinatown n case there is a situation that we as a city is prepared to handle it. Mayor london breed in San Franciscos chinatown announcing aid and special help for businesses who have been impacted but especially the Chinatown Community which has been suffering the longest. It got hit first. That is where people stopped going to the restaurants or small shops that depend on tourists are desperately in need of some assistance. In Santa Clara County were learning more about the three tsa agents who tested positive for covid 19 and where they worked at Mineta International airport. Chris nguyen is live in san jose with more. Chris . Reporter dan, a union rep says all three of those agents work here at terminal b. And now dozens of their colleagues are being told to stay home after coming in close contact. At Mineta San Jose International airport, it would be tough to find anyone not talking about the novel coronavirus. The airport is a little nerve racking because im a nervous travelers. Reporter now many are more nervous after learning about the three tsa officers that recently tested positive for covid 19. All three work at the security checkpoint in terminal b on the night shift. It keeps me wondering if im going to get it potentially just walking through and if im going to pick it up and take it with me wherever i go. Reporter a group of Santa Clara County elected officials, including the mayor, has called on the tsa to release more details about the affected officers, such as their shift times and posting locations. Deep cleaning with wiping multiple times a shift all surfaces and bathrooms to ensure that were protecting all the travelers who are coming through the airport. Reporter james mudrock, president of the Union RepresentingAirport Security screeners in Northern California says that at least 42 employees have been told to selfquarantine for differing amounts of days based on their last known contact with one of the affected officers. I would hope that we would continue to be able to keep everything open and maintain a passenger flow, but if it gets worse, theres no telling. Reporter the travel industry has a whole has already taken a big hit financially because of coronavirus concerns. Passenger traffic at sjc this afternoon was noticeably lighter than usual. How do you keep yourself safe, not knowing where the other passengers have been. Not to blame them, they may not know they have been exposed and are carrying something. Ridership dropped 30 yesterday, which followed a 25 drop on monday. A b. A. R. T. Official says the agency is actively pursuing emergency aid from local, state and federal sources to help handle the fare revenue losses estimated between 450,000 to 600,000 each weekday. The impact on b. A. R. T. Has been dramatic. Certain people even here in the bay area can now get tested for coronavirus at a drivethrough. That story next. More than 1,400 people have now been taken off the ship with many taken to Travis Air Force base near fairfield and a marine air corps station miramar in san diego for 14day quarantines. Today weve learned that some passengers are now being housed at a motel in san carlos. We dont know which motel it is or how many people are there. San mateo county Officials Say they have been assured by state and federal authorities that the passengers pose no health or safety risks to local residents or visitors. Meantime, drivethrough coronavirus testing is coming to some kaiser hospitals in the bay area. Drivethrough tents will be set up at three locations, including this one at the French Hospital campus in San Francisco. You need a doctors order to get the test, by the way. Kaiser will also have drivethrough testing in redwood city and san jose as well. Union nurses at hospitals up and down the state rallied today to demand more and better protective gear as they care for rising numbers of coronavirus patients. Eric thomas reports from oakland. Keep us safe keep us safe reporter dozens of nurses showed up today to spread a message about the spread of covid 19. We are protesting the ineffective employer and government response to covid 19, and we demand protection now. Reporter members of the california nurses association, thats the Union Representing nurses at major hospitals, are angry that the centers for Disease Control is loosens some protective standards for Health Care Workers in hospitals. Primarily theyre upset about the rule allowing workers to wear regular surgical masks to block the spread of the virus instead of the more effective n95 masks. We do not need these. These are completely ineffective. They wont work and what will happen is that more and more people will contract the virus. Reporter nurse Charlene Allen brought her own n95 from home today. So when youre told a regular surgical mask will do the job instead of that, what do you think . I dont believe it but i use what they give me. Reporter they cdc and hospitals are trying to work around a shortage of proper masks and the science supports them. Their demands run counter to everything that the centers for Disease Control and other scientists are telling us about this virus and its spread. Reporter the union also charges that some hospitals are urging nurses who may have been exposed to the virus but dont show any symptoms to continue to work. The California Hospital Association says that is allowed as long as the proper hygiene and proper protective protocols are in place. In oakland, eric thomas, abc 7 news. Breaking news now out of oakland. The city has just ordered the cancellation of all large Public Events of 1,000 people or more to decrease the spread of the coronavirus, to slow it. The ban will be in effect until at least march 31st. The city is also expanding Sanitation Services to the Homeless Population and has declared a local state of emergency. There are currently no confirmed cases of covid 19 in oakland. So what this means is this probably means the whole bay bridge series between the giants and the as is now cancelled. The giants home game scheduled for march 24th at oracle park in San Francisco was already cancelled earlier today. The giants said, quote, we are in the process of working with Major League Baseball and the as to finalize alternative arrangements. Now, earlier the as said nothing is more important than the health and safety of our community. We will adhere to any government directives and work with Major League Baseball. All alternative arrangements to ensure the health of our fans and our Community Remains a top priority, but again they issued that statement before the oakland ban of events of 1,000 people so that means both the march 23rd and 24th games should be canceled.
